WiKirby:Citing policy

When citing sources, it is important to use a standardized method of citation depending on the source being used. The following is WiKirby's citing policy.

Types of references

There are many different sources an editor can reference. Normally when using material from in games or other material, sources do not need to be directly cited as long as it is clear that the material is from the subject in question and can be easily verified as such.

For other cases, where sources are more obscure, it is useful and recommended to cite the source using a reference. Reference contents may be typed out directly if the editor is confident in their formatting skills, but below are a number of handy templates which can be used to more easily form citations:

In-game quotes

The {{cite}} template is useful for references that quote a character or other block of text from one of the games. See that page for specific instructions on usage.

Be sure that the quote is precise, and contains only the text that is needed (for instance, if only one sentence is needed in the reference, including the entire speech is redundant).

Web pages

The {{cite web}} template is useful for referencing particular web pages as the source of a piece of information. See that page for specific instructions on usage.

This is only necessary when information can be found only on that web page, such as information about certain web sites, or sourcing reviews of games.

Developer quotes

The {{cite person}} template is useful for quoting something a specific (real-life) person said. See that page for specific instructions on usage.

Manual quotes

the {{cite manual}} template is useful for referencing a section of text from a game's instruction manual. See that page for specific instructions on usage.

Book quotes

The {{cite book}} template is useful for referencing a section of text from a book that is not a game manual. See that page for specific instructions on usage.

Television episodes

The {{cite episode}} template is useful for pulling a quote from an episode of a television show. See that page for specific instructions on usage.

Archiving external links

Ideally when using a website, image from the Internet, or especially a post from the social media as a citation, a link to a Wayback Machine archive should also be provided. This is a future-proof measure, in case the site (or the account) gets deleted and the source is no longer accessible or verifiable. Finding an archive is simple: just paste the URL of the site you want to add into the Wayback Machine search bar and see if its here. If yes, then its simple, just use the URL provided. If no, then its still simple, as it can be requested for an archive to be done, which should only take few minutes.

Note that some sites block Internet Archive (such as Nintendo of Europe). In this case, the rule does not apply.

Improperly cited information

Any information that is not sourced according to the above policies should be marked with {{fact}}, signaling to other editors that a source for this information is required. Editors may check the category of articles lacking sources to see where this template has been placed.
