This article is about the main series game for the Nintendo Switch. For the level, see Kirby Star Allies (level).

Kirby Star Allies is a main-series Kirby game for the Nintendo Switch, making it the first main-series release on a home console since Kirby's Return to Dream Land in 2011. It is a side-scrolling platformer game with three-dimensional visuals that succeeds the Nintendo 3DS titles of Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Kirby: Planet Robobot in general style, though it takes on its own set of features and attributes. In place of a special power-up or vehicle specifically for Kirby, Kirby Star Allies features extensive multiplayer co-op, allowing Kirby to recruit allies from various on-stage enemies or summon special partners from the Dream Palaces. With the aid of these partners, Kirby can then perform combination moves, including some special transformations that can only be done with a full party of four.

A downloadable demo of Kirby Star Allies was released in the Nintendo eShop on March 1, 2018 in Europe and March 4, 2018 in North America, which features small portions from the first few stages in the game. The Grasslands Stage combines rooms from Green Gardens, Honey Hill and Fruity Forest and ends after defeating Whispy Woods. The Cave & Castle Stage combines rooms from Donut Dome, Reef Resort, Friendly Field and Clash at Castle Dedede and ends after defeating King Dedede.

Story[edit]

A botched ritual on a far away space station rains trouble across the universe and calls Kirby to adventure once more.

Far away, on a distant terminus in outer space, a strange robed figure approaches a giant black crystal heart encased in a glass ball. The wizard-like being then raises an incantation, which causes the heart to shatter, shooting pieces of it all over the galaxy. Many of these pieces fly all the way to Popstar, where they begin raining down on the normally peaceful planet. Meta Knight and King Dedede separately encounter the hearts as they land, and Dedede, in particular, becomes entranced by them. Meanwhile, Kirby is sleeping beside a hollow hillside, when a separate heart-shaped ray hits his head. This causes him to stir, only to discover that Dedede's Waddle Dees are running toward Castle Dedede with as much food as they can carry, leaving Kirby to presume that Dedede is stealing all the food from Dream Land again. Kirby rushes off toward the castle to put a stop to this. Along the way, Kirby discovers a strange new power within himself that allows him to charm enemies and make them into his friends. With the help of his new allies, Kirby battles his way through Whispy Woods and Dedede's castle and confronts the king, who, up to that point, was busy gorging himself on rotten fruit. Dedede immediately attacks, transforming into an overly muscular version of himself in the process. Despite this, Kirby manages to beat him, causing one of the dark hearts to pop out of the King as he reverts to normal. The heart then flies away on its own, prompting Kirby to give chase.

Kirby and his allies run into the first of The Three Mage-Sisters in the Jambastion.

Kirby runs all over Popstar in pursuit of the hearts, ultimately bumping into Meta Knight - who is also possessed - who forces a fight. After defeating the masked swordsman and freeing him of his possession, a giant alien fortress embeds itself into Popstar. Kirby and his allies board the hostile base, battling the gatekeepers Pon & Con and making their way to the top. Along the way, they encounter the Three Mage-Sisters Francisca, Flamberge, and the head general Zan Partizanne. As Kirby fights them, they make it known that they are in pursuit of the hearts which fell onto Popstar, intent on using them to revive their dark god. When Kirby defeats them, Zan Partizanne initiates the fortress's self destruct sequence, in hopes that Kirby will be trapped in the rubble. Instead, Kirby and his allies escape and fly off into outer space. They visit several alien worlds in pursuit of the hearts. In the process, they are forced to fight the Mage-Sisters again, along with other formidable opponents. Eventually, Kirby and his allies make it to the home base of the Mage-Sisters, a space station called Jambandra. They eventually reach the terminus where the same wizard from the intro is attempting to repair the crystal heart by recombining the pieces. Zan Partizanne tries to stop Kirby from interfering but is defeated.

Kirby and his allies barge into The Divine Terminus at Jambandra to attempt to interrupt a sinister ritual.

Upon the defeat of his finest general, the wizard (whose name is revealed as Hyness) turns and faces Kirby himself. After kicking his own general out of the way, Hyness proceeds to deliver a crazed rant at Kirby, blaming his kind for the woes that fell upon him, and reasserting his desire to awaken his dark god. He battles Kirby, but shortly into the fight, his hood gets knocked off, revealing his true face. From there, he uses the inanimate bodies of the Three Mage-Sisters as projectiles to fight Kirby with, his mad power proving difficult to overcome. Kirby ultimately beats Hyness, but this only forces the cornered officiant to resort to drastic measures. He sacrifices the Mage-Sisters, and then himself by plunging all of them into the heart, mending it completely and causing it to awaken.

Kirby and his allies return home after vanquishing yet another threat to the universe.

The dark god forms into a terrible masked giant (named Void Termina), but Kirby uses a special power with his allies in the form of the Star Allies Sparkler to battle it with. The fight is long and hard, but in the process, Kirby and his allies make their way into Void Termina's body and free Hyness and the Mage-Sisters from its grasp. After sustaining massive damage, Void Termina assumes its true form, and the allies battle it one more time. Kirby finishes it off by engaging in a prolonged laser tug-o-war with the dark god, and finishes by summoning all of his allies to attack the beast at once, destroying it utterly. Kirby and his allies escape as Void Termina's death causes the world they were fighting on to shatter. Kirby is knocked out by the debris but wakes up in outer space along with the allies he had just fought with. Together, they ride a Warp Star back to Popstar, having vanquished yet another great evil from the universe.

Characters[edit]

Characters in Kirby Star Allies
Character Role
As usual, Kirby takes on the role of main protagonist and playable character in the Story Mode, in addition to other peripheral modes. He sets off on a journey after the Jamba Heart fragments rain down across the universe and disturb the peace to find their source and put a stop to the chaos. Along the way, Kirby utilizes a new power bestowed upon him that allows him to turn his enemies into allies.
When the Jamba Hearts rain down onto Popstar, King Dedede is among the first affected by their dark magic, which causes him to once again steal as much food from Dream Land as possible to gorge on it himself. Kirby and his allies have to barge into Castle Dedede and defeat the gluttonous king, who uses the power of the dark heart to turn beefy during his fight. Once defeated, King Dedede is freed from the heart's influence and joins Kirby on his quest.
Along with King Dedede, Meta Knight is affected by the falling hearts, giving in to his older tendencies as Kirby's opponent rather than his ally. He meets Kirby's team at the Sacred Square on Popstar and challenges them to a duel, using the power of the dark heart to split into four copies of himself during the battle. Like Dedede, Meta Knight is freed from the heart's influence and joins Kirby after his defeat.
In this title, Kirby gains the ability to turn what would normally be his enemies into his most stalwart allies using Friend Hearts. He can also call upon help from more prominent characters from his earlier adventures by visiting Dream Palaces. In addition to their role in the story mode, each of these additional characters gets their own chance to be the main star in Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!
These three generals of magic hail from Jambandra and scour the universe in search of the lost fragments of the Jamba Heart. They are devoutly loyal to Hyness and frequently clash with Kirby and his team after arriving with one of their Jambastions at Popstar.
A mad wizard who was banished along with the Jamba Heart to Jambandra, and who plotted a scheme to free the great evil sealed within the heart. His incantation broke the seal on the heart, but it also unintentionally caused the heart to shatter into fragments and scatter across the universe. As Kirby and his team make their way to The Divine Terminus, Hyness is unable to completely restore the heart, so after being bested by the Star Allies, he sacrifices himself and The Three Mage-Sisters to complete the heart and unleash Void Termina onto the universe.
A primordial entity of chaos and destruction and relative of Dark Matter that was sealed away long ago by the Ancients. Hyness and his subordinates revere Void Termina as their god and sacrifice themselves to bring him back. Kirby and his allies must then use the Star Allies Sparkler to fight and defeat him in a great and lengthy struggle.

Gameplay[edit]

Kirby Star Allies is centered around the mechanic of recruiting certain enemies from stages to become Kirby's friends, who then help him overcome obstacles.

Kirby Star Allies is an action platformer, styled after previous games in the main series, greatly resembling Kirby's Return to Dream Land in its art style, but in HD. The central premise of the game revolves around Kirby's ability to toss hearts at enemies to befriend them and turn into allies in the vain of the Helpers from Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra. Collecting certain friends will allow Kirby to solve various puzzles, and perform combo attacks called Friend Abilities. These attacks include combining Copy Abilities, as well as performing special moves with friends. Once Friends are acquired, they can either be controlled by the CPU or controlled by additional players. In the stages, Kirby and his friends can collect Picture Pieces. These serve as optional collectible items that are used to complete Celebration Pictures.

The main Story Mode has Kirby and his friends traversing four main areas (with a fifth being a final boss level) and visiting stages in each area, unlocking them by clearing them in succession. Optional extra stages can also be unlocked by finding and pressing Big Switches in certain stages. These switches also unlock the Dream Palaces at each level, where Kirby can recruit the special Dream Friends if he so wishes.

Control[edit]

There are two control types to choose from in the Control Options. Type A is the default one, and Type B resembles the control in Kirby Super Star.

If using a single Joy-Con, it must be placed horizontally: only the stick does the motion control, the four round buttons (→/↓/↑/←) become A/B/X/Y respectively, and SL and SR function as L/R/ZL/ZR (L/R does nothing if using a single Joy-Con).

Friend Abilities[edit]

In addition to standard Copy Abilities, Kirby and his Friends can combine their powers together to create distinct moves and abilities. This can be done in a number of different ways, as illustrated in the sections below.

There are several types of Friend Abilities on offer. They fall into one of the three following categories:

Power Effects[edit]

Sizzle Sword Art.png
Burning Leo giving Kirby the Sizzle Sword Power Effect
Main article: Power Effect

Elemental enhancements can be applied to neutral-type Copy Abilities (typically those that resemble weapons). To do this, the weapon holder must raise their weapon, then the element wielder must use an elemental attack on the former ally to imbue it. There are five power effects in total, as follows:

  • Blizzard - provided by ice-based attacks
  • Bluster - provided by wind-based attacks
  • Sizzle - provided by fire-based attacks
  • Splash - provided by water-based attacks
  • Zap - provided by electric-based attacks

In addition, weapons which have already been enchanted can be used in turn to enchant other weapons. Certain special attacks (like Gooey's tongue attacks) can also be used to add elemental effects.

Friend Combo Attacks[edit]

In addition to the above, there are special one-time moves which the Star Allies can perform by combining specific abilities together, or by simply having the allies involved. These abilities are as follows:

Combo Friend Abilities in Kirby Star Allies
Ability Components Description Notes
Adeleine & Ribbon Uses a painting canvas to produce food and Point Stars. This ability does not actually require partners to be used.
Based on the Bonus Game from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.
Parasol or Parasol Waddle Dee Expands the Parasol to cover a wide area above the user, which others can take shelter under. This ability does not actually require partners to be used.

Stone, Rocky, Rick, or Gooey
+
Any ally move involving Blizzard, Bluster, or Splash
Applying Blizzard, Bluster, or Splash attacks to the appropriate ally will cause them to turn into a curling stone and fly forward, dealing large damage to anything it hits and pounding in sideways stakes. The element used will add various properties to the curling stone. These moves are the only ones which do not follow standard Power Effect naming conventions for "Blizzard" (Ice) and "Bluster" (Clean), likely in reference to the real life term "ice curling".
Based on the Stone-Ice Power Combo from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.
Mike
+
Any ally
While using the final shout of Mike, any allies present will become involved, increasing the damage the move does per ally.
Festival
+
Any ally
While using the Festival ability, any allies present will become involved, increasing the damage the move does per ally.

This can be used to break stone and metal blocks or pound Electric Stakes.
Water or Driblee
+
Any Blizzard-based attack
Channeling any Blizzard-based attack through a Water-powered ally creates a stream of icicle projectiles that can quickly defeat enemies or clear away burning hazards.
Magolor
+
Any ally
Magolor summons a small version of the Lor Starcutter which allies jump into, then the ship gets thrown forward to defeat enemies and clear away heavy blocks.
The damage done and size of the ship increases per ally.

Mid-Bosses[edit]

Artwork of Vividria.

Unlike many previous games, Kirby Star Allies features relatively few distinct Mid-Bosses, at only five (six if Big Bouncy is included). Each of these five Mid-Bosses are encountered numerous times throughout the stages and in The Ultimate Choice, with each having a normal form and a more powerful variant with a different color palette, additional attacks, and greater HP. These Mid-Bosses can also be recruited as allies (excepting Mr. Frosty, who turns into Chilly instead), but only after they have been defeated.

The following table lists every Mid-Boss in Kirby Star Allies:

Mid-Bosses in Kirby Star Allies
Name Appearance Copy Ability Description
Big Bouncy
KSA Big Bouncy.jpg
None This obscure enemy appears only twice in the game, and even then, only outside of Story Mode. It resembles the giant Bouncy from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards in how it operates, not posing a direct threat to Kirby and his friends, bouncing in place and requiring many hits to defeat, while smaller Bouncies spawn while the big one is still alive. Big Bouncy cannot be made into an ally and does not provide any abilities when defeated.
Bonkers
KSA Bonkers.jpg
KSA Bonkers EX.jpg
Hammer This powerful mallet-wielding simian returns once more to do battle with Kirby. His moves are largely the same as before, though when defeated, he can be recruited as a Friend.
Bugzzy
KSA Bugzzy.jpg
KSA Bugzzy EX.jpg
Suplex The original Beetle-like wrestler appears for the first time in 3-D. His moves are largely the same as before, though he also gains the ability to dive at Kirby from the sky, as well as use the Pinpoint Kick. He can become an ally once defeated.
Chef Kawasaki
KSA Chef Kawasaki.jpg
KSA Chef Kawasaki EX.jpg
Cook This infamous chef returns for the first time in 3-D. His attacks include throwing dishes, spinning through the air, and grabbing Kirby with his ladle to cook him up. He can be recruited as an ally once defeated.
Mr. Frosty
KSA Mr Frosty.jpg
KSA Mr Frosty EX.jpg
Ice The walrus in overalls strikes again, this time focusing more heavily on his charging attacks and acrobatics. Unlike the others, he cannot be made into an ally, being replaced by Chilly if he is hit by a Friend Heart once downed.
Vividria
KSA Vividria.jpg
KSA Vividria EX.jpg
Artist The only newcomer of the bunch, this paintbrush-haired lass can float around the battlefield, and attacks by swiping with her hair, spraying paint around, and painting things to attack Kirby with. She can be made into an ally once defeated.

Bosses[edit]

Artwork of The Three Mage-Sisters.

Kirby Star Allies features 26 distinct bosses (distinct being defined as a boss which has a splash card, not counting Galacta Knight), more than any other Kirby game up to this point. These bosses can be faced in the middle of levels, as opposed to only at the end, which hearkens back to the structure of levels in Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra. Despite the official number of bosses being so high, most bosses are derived from each-other in some fashion, and can be considered to be tougher forms of previous bosses.

The following table lists every distinct boss in Kirby Star Allies in the intended order of encounter:

Bosses in Kirby Star Allies
Name Location(s) Description Notes
Fruity Forest
Falluna Moon
Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!
The Ultimate Choice (Sizzling Threat and lower)
This sentient arbor returns as the first boss encounter. Powered up by a Dark Heart fragment, he can grow larger and conjure waves and waves of Apples, along with other new tricks. Despite this, he is still not particularly formidable. Whispy Woods is weak to fire attacks, and may catch fire when hit by them enough.
Whispy Woods can be befriended after his defeat using a Friend Heart.
Clash at Castle Dedede
Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!
The Ultimate Choice (all except Soul Melter EX)
Kirby's eternal rival attacks when Kirby and his friends storm the castle. Engorging himself on rotten food and the power of a Dark Heart fragment, he becomes considerably beefier during his fight, and gains new attack patterns using his giant arms. King Dedede can be befriended after his defeat using a Friend Heart.
Sacred Square
Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!
The Ultimate Choice (all except Soul Melter EX)
The Masked Swordsman returns for another honorable duel (should Kirby accept it). Using the power of the Dark Heart fragment, he splits into many copies of himself and can throw giant boulders using magical force. Meta Knight can be befriended after his defeat using a Friend Heart.
Gatehouse Road
Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!
The Ultimate Choice (Mild Stroll through Sizzling Threat)
These two woodland guardians are dressed in armor and recruited by the Jambastion to defend the front gate. They attack by charging along with their children, some of whom drop elemental bombs. Pon & Con are befriended after their defeat using a Friend Heart.
Longview Corridor
Blizzno Moon

She is also faced as part of The Three Mage-Sisters boss battle.
Heavenly Hall
The Divine Terminus

The Ultimate Choice (Fiery Showdown through Soul Melter EX)
Two large mammals made of metal that serve as a more powerful analogue to Pon & Con. Goldon & Silvox have greater stamina when faced in Soul Melter EX.

Gabbel Moon
Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!
The Ultimate Choice (Mild Stroll through Soul Melter)
This familiar cloud-enshrouded eyeball returns to harass Kirby and his team as they hop from planet to planet. His attacks are largely the same as they've ever been. Transforms into Twin Kracko after being defeated.
Gabbel Moon

The Divine Terminus
Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!

Kirby Star Allies
The Ultimate Choice (Infernal Crisis, Soul Melter)

Void Termina's Soul Melter form is more powerful and has a different color palette.
The last phase of Void Termina's battle is only used in Story Mode.
Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! Often called "The Greatest Warrior in the Galaxy", this swordsman is brought from another dimension to battle the Guest Stars, but does not actually get to fight them this time, as he is immediately absorbed by the Butterfly who turns into Morpho Knight as a result.
Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!
The Ultimate Choice (Fiery Showdown through Soul Melter)
This enigmatic creature takes on the form of a swordsman after absorbing Galacta Knight and does battle with the Guest Stars. He wields incredibly powerful fiery magic. He serves as the final opponent of Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!
