This article is about the wearable costumes explicitly called "Masks". For costumes in a general context, see Costumes.
This article is about wearable masks that can be worn by any playable character, and should not be confused with masks worn by certain characters as part of their design, including Meta Knight.

Masks (referred to as Dress-Up Masks in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe) are wearable items that are worn as a costume on the character's face, typically appearing as unlockable items in the games they appear in. They usually depict characters from throughout the Kirby series, and also come with voice clips associated with the character being depicted. These masks are purely aesthetic and do not affect gameplay in any way (barring some exceptions).

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

A selection of Dress-Up Masks which can be worn by characters in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe introduces Dress-Up Masks, which are almost identical in function to the masks in Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe. Dress-Up Masks depict several characters featured throughout the Kirby series, this time with the selection being much broader in scope. They can be changed by going to their respective menu from Souvenir Shop Waddle Dee or via the pause menu, and they can also be toggled on the fly by pressing the right stick button.

Some Dress-Up Masks also depict alternate versions of characters (usually unlocked by reaching certain completed mission thresholds in Merry Magoland). Additionally, some masks can replace the wearer's voice with the voice clips and sounds associated with the depicted character. Although the masks are mostly cosmetic, the Kine and Mine masks give their wearer the Enhanced Water Gun move from the Water copy ability.

Dress-Up Masks can be worn by any character in most of the game's modes, except for Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler. There are a total of 86 Dress-Up Masks in the game, and they are mainly unlocked via the Stamp Rally, though others have special unlock criteria.

The following are all of the Dress-Up Masks in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, along with info on each:

Vocalizations when using Dress-Up Masks[edit]

As mentioned earlier, some Dress-Up Masks replace the wearer's voice with that of the voice clips corresponding to the depicted character. In the main game and in Merry Magoland, these masks usually override some vocalizations that characters (especially Kirby) make during the following situations:

List of situations that can trigger a Dress-Up Mask voice clip
Situation Notes
Main Mode:
Entering a Goal Door This applies to both regular stages and Challenge Stages.
Finishing a complete dance Regardless of the dance's length, it is qualified in both Goal Game (unless if the player reaches a very low place) and after boss battles.
Doing a victory pose after completing a stage This applies to the level hubs and Challenge Stages.
Collecting Energy Spheres and Part Spheres
Talking with Magolor after restoring one of the ship parts of the Lor Starcutter
Some moves of certain Copy Abilities and Super Abilities These are listed in the following table below.
Using a Souvenir Item
Performing an emote This is also applicable to Merry Magoland.
Merry Magoland:
Entering any of the sub-games
Cheering at the start of some sub-games or while unlocking new Dress-Up Masks and filling out the Stamp Rally
Getting a victory on a sub-game This also applies to completing a Magoland Tour.
Performing an Overhead Shot in Booming Blasters
Performing a Smash Attack in Smash Ride The player has to successfully ram into another opponent when performing a Smash Attack.
Performing a Smash Hit in Bomb Rally
Landing the final blow in Samurai Kirby 100 Other opponents' masks may also play their corresponding voice clips as they are defeated by the player.
Punching through the ground in Crackity Hack This is done regardless if the player has filled in the bars and aligned the reticle at the end or not.
Unleashing a shock wave in Checkerboard Chase
Selecting a correct tome in Magolor's Tome Trackers
Shooting either the King Dedede, Meta Knight, or Magolor targets in Kirby on the Draw

A character will still use their original voice clips if they take damage from any source or yell while being kicked out of a dimensional rift or being caught in certain boss attacks like Black Hole. Merry Magoland's entrance animation also still causes Kirby to use his default voice when he gazes at the park's features.

All Copy Abilities, with the exception of Crash, Mike and Sleep, have at least one move that causes any of the unique voices associated with said mask to play. The following is a list of Copy Abilities and their corresponding moves that trigger these voice clips:

List of Copy Ability moves that can trigger a Dress-Up Mask voice clip
Ability Moves Notes
Beam Wave Beam
Bomb Bomb Drop
Festival Dance Solo, Festival Dance This is the only limited-use ability to make use of a mask's voice clips in one or more moves in its moveset.
Fighter Mega Force Blast, Giga Force Blast, Instant Mega Force Blast This is the only ability with three moves that trigger a mask's voice clips.
Fire Fireball Inferno
Hammer Hammer Flip, Hammer Throw The voice clip will quickly fade out once Kirby's hammer disappears during a Hammer Throw.
Hi-Jump Mega Hi-Jump
Ice Ice Ball
Leaf Leaf Scatter
Needle Needle Burst
Ninja Blossom Storm, Air Drop
Parasol Circus Throw
Spark Spark Wave
Spear Finishing Multispear Attack
Stone Mighty Uppercut
Sword Spin Slash, Twister Slash
Tornado Hyper Tornado
Water Rainbow Rain
Wing Shuttle Loop
Whip Whip Tornado

These conditions also apply to some of King Dedede, Meta Knight, and Bandana Waddle Dee's moves, which are based on pre-existing abilities. For Super Abilities, Kirby's shouts when obtaining and using these abilities are replaced with the mask's voice clips, excluding the vocalizations he performs when unleashing the final Ultra Sword attack on Magolor during his boss battle.
