This isn't any yo-yo! Swing up and down, or break-spin! Try 'em all to look cool!
— Super Star Ultra quote

File:Yo-yo.png Yo-Yo (also called Yo-yo) is an ability that can be obtained by inhaling Gim. It debuted in Kirby Super Star and likewise, it was also a part of its remake Kirby Super Star Ultra. The ability allows Kirby to ultiliTemplate:Ze a bright red yo-yo to smack around enemies from a safe distance, comparable to the Beam or Whip ability. The yo-yo can also pass through walls and floors, making it useful for activating switches or solving puzzles.

Kirby can also obtain the Yo-Yo ability through Copy Essence Deluxes. With the yo-yo equipped, Kirby can create Gim as a Helper. In Super Star, Kirby is outfitted with a backwards ball cap when he acquires this ability. In Star Allies, this outfit also comes with a band-aid on Kirby's right cheek.

Trivia

  • Kirby's backwards cap is more than likely a reference to the Earthbound RPG (known as Mother 2 in Japan) on the SNES. In the game, the yo-yo is a weapon several characters can equip, and the main character, Ness, wears a similar backwards cap. HAL had also done some work on Earthbound as well. This reference would carry forward in proper fashion with the ESP ability.
  • Kirby's Yo-yo hat in Super Star is a recolTemplate:Our of the Wheel and Paint ability hats.
  • Oddly enough, this ability could be obtained by inhaling one of Combo Cannon's cannonballs. This was changed in Kirby Super Star Ultra, where instead Kirby received Bomb ability from them.
  • Break Spin is one of the attacks Kirby can use in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. 4. It replaces the Burning ability, which was used in Super Smash Bros. Melee as Kirby's dash attack. Kirby does not use the yo-yo for this move, however.
