This article is about Whispy Woods as a character. For other uses, see Whispy Woods (disambiguation).
Please don't tread on my roots, it would not be a wise decision.
— Whispy Woods, in Kirby's Avalanche

Whispy Woods (known in shorthand as Whispy or sometimes Wispy, and once referred to as the Larkspur Liar[1], and titled Guardian of the Forest in Kirby Star Allies), is an anthropomorphic tree who is most well known as being an early (if not the first) boss that Kirby faces in many of his adventures. In his simplest incarnations, he is incapable of moving, and can only attack by dropping apples and blowing Air Bullets at Kirby, but his sheer number of appearances and variants give him a vide variety of additional attacks, and in some cases, allow him to hop around or even run after his opponents.

Along with Kracko, Lololo & Lalala, and Kabula, Whispy Woods is one of the most iconic boss characters in the Kirby series, having made dozens of appearances since his debut in Kirby's Dream Land, and also appearing in the Super Smash Bros. series and in other media such as the anime and novel series. Additionally, there are many other entities throughout the series that are either related to Whispy Woods, inspired by him, or both. Whispy Woods is almost consistently an enemy to Kirby, for reasons known only to himself, though he does very occasionally appear as a neutral character or even an ally. The most notable examples of Whispy Woods being an ally are in Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble and the anime series, Kirby: Right Back at Ya!.

His name comes from the words "wispy" (meaning fine, feathery, or delicate), a term often used to describe plants and trees, and "whisper" (meaning to speak softly with one's breath), which reflects the wind-based attacks he utilizes. Because of this, his name is occasionally misspelled as either "Wispy Woods" (as in Kirby's Pinball Land) or "Whisper Woods" (as in Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64).

Physical appearance

Whispy Woods is characterized as an anthropomorphized apple tree with a humanoid 'face', though his nose is just a branch and his eyes and mouth are holes in his trunk which can widen and contract as needed. Being a tree, Whispy cannot move very much, usually being rooted to a fixed location whenever he is encountered. Whispy is (for reasons known or unknown) usually hostile towards Kirby and his friends, and attacks mainly by dropping Apples from his canopy, or by blowing out Air Bullets from his mouth. His apples can be Inhaled and used against him, and he is particularly weak to Fire-based attacks as well. Whispy Woods seems to be able to move due to him being featured in different locations, a fact which was first confirmed in Kirby's Dream Land 3.

Whispy Woods keeps his general look from game to game, though the particulars of his canopy size, trunk width, and other minor details tend to vary. Often, the front part of his canopy stretches out further than the back part, though this is less pronounced in games where he can jump to a new location.

Location

Whispy Woods makes his home in the lush greenery of Dream Land on Planet Popstar, usually within a thick forest area. It is unknown if he routinely migrates, or if he lives in the same spot while the scenery changes around him (as he can be found in many differently-named areas, it may be that the area he resides in simply gets renamed again and again). However, he can also be found in other more remote places, such as the Popopo Island of Green Grounds, or on other worlds entirely, like planet Floria (as Twin Woods) and on Falluna Moon, which would suggest that there is more than one Whispy. In Team Kirby Clash Deluxe and Super Kirby Clash, Whispy Woods has the ability to jump and move to relatively far areas, what could somewhat explain him being found in different places of Popstar.

Kirby's Dream Land

Whispy Woods makes his first appearance in Kirby's Dream Land

Whispy Woods is the first Boss of Kirby's Dream Land, fought at the end of Green Greens. His attack patterns are extremely simple, and will either shoot out a few Air Bullets at Kirby, or will drop Apples from his canopy. Kirby can inhale the apples and spit them back out as Star Bullets to deal Whispy damage. After six hits, he stops fighting, and yields one of the Sparkling Stars for Kirby to collect.

The Super Game Boy player's guide for the game suggests that "Wispy Woods" is the name of Green Greens' forest as a whole, and that the individual tree that Kirby faces is named Larkspur Liar, who spews oak chunks and chestnuts (rather than air bullets). It also states the apples dropped during the fight come from the other trees within the woods. This is likely not canon, and simply a misinterpretation based on a lack of information about the game.

In the Extra Game, Whispy will also drop Gordos from his canopy.

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land

Whispy Woods' appearance in Kirby's Adventure

In Kirby's Adventure and Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Whispy is faced at the end of Vegetable Valley. His attack patterns are exactly the same as in Kirby's Dream Land. Once defeated, Whispy sheds a tear and yields the first piece of the Star Rod for Kirby to collect.

Whispy is also the first boss that Kirby will face as part of the Boss Endurance.

Kirby's Pinball Land

Whispy is the last obstacle of Wispy-Woods Land in Kirby's Pinball Land, faced in a separate board. Like in his main game incarnations, he will drop apples and shoot out air bullets, which act as bumpers. He may also drop Gordos from his canopy which are capable of disabling the flippers. Kirby has to crash into his face eight times to defeat him and clear the course.

Kirby's Dream Course

Whispy Woods' sprite in Kirby's Dream Course.

Whispy is not a boss in Kirby's Dream Course. Instead, he can be seen in several locations, either offstage, or as a stage hazard. He can be destroyed using offensive Copy Abilities like Burning or Spark. He also appears on platform during end of the course. Unlike most other enemies, Whispy Woods does not need to be defeated to make the cup appear.

Whispy Woods also has his own stage in 2P Mode - Whispy Woods Course.

Kirby's Dream Land 2

In Kirby's Dream Land 2, Whispy Woods apparently has hay fever.

Whispy serves as the first boss in Kirby's Dream Land 2, at the end of Grass Land. In his first phase, he wears glasses and a surgical mask, preventing him from shooting out air bullets. However, he can now attack with his roots. Once he is hit enough times, his accessories fall off, and he continues the fight as usual.

The glasses and mask are likely an ironic joke, as these are commonly worn to prevent hay fever, especially in Japan; hay fever is itself caused by allergies to the pollen created by plants.

Whispy also participates in the Grass Land Bonus Chance, where he spits out Apples and Point Stars, the latter of which Kirby needs to collect.

Kirby's Avalanche

A contemplative, age-old enemy of Kirby, Whispy Woods will prove to be the mightiest oak you have ever encountered.
— Kirby's Avalanche Instruction Booklet (North American print), page 22

In Kirby's Avalanche, Whispy is the second opponent fought in the main game. He is relatively easy, and will always start the match by trying to build four rows of puyos at the bottom. His Puyo Puyo equivalent is Suketoudara.

Kirby's Block Ball

Whispy Woods appears both as a regular enemy and as a Boss in Stage 8 of Kirby's Block Ball. His enemy variant takes 4 hits to defeat and is worth 5000 points. His boss form has 12 HP and is worth 50000 points when defeated. Whispy attacks by dropping Gordos from his canopy and spitting air bullets.

Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra

Kirby defeating Whispy Woods in Kirby Super Star.

In Kirby Super Star and its remake Kirby Super Star Ultra, Whispy Woods is first encountered in Spring Breeze, serving as the first intended boss in the game. He fights in a similar way as in the other games with his Apples and Air Bullets. Whispy Woods is seen again during Revenge of Meta Knight, and defeating him here leads to a second encounter with a dual version of himself called Twin Woods. Twin Woods is then faced one more time in Milky Way Wishes, as the boss of planet Floria.

Whispy Woods also makes an appearance in the game Dyna Blade, where Kirby feeds some of his apples to Dyna Blade's chicks.

In Kirby Super Star Ultra, Whispy Woods also appears on a card in Kirby Card Swipe.

Whispy's Revenge

Whispy's Revenge is a powered-up form of Whispy Woods in the Revenge of the King level in Kirby Super Star Ultra. He has purple leaves and stronger attacks. Whispy, in addition to the standard abilities of his original incarnation, can now blow tornadoes, make poison apples fall from his leaves, and drop many Gordos and Caterpillars. While his boss icon depicts him with the arm-like stumps on his side, he does not have them in the battle.

Kirby's Dream Land 3

Whispy breaks convention and chases Kirby down while spitting out vegetables in Kirby's Dream Land 3.

In Kirby's Dream Land 3, Whispy serves as the boss of the first level - Grass Land. Unlike in previous incarnations, Whispy will drop and spit out vegetables that Kirby must use to retaliate with. This battle comes in two phases, with the second involving Whispy uprooting and chasing Kirby down. He can kick Kirby away if he's near him.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

Whispy Woods and his children face off against Kirby in a circular ring.
Main article: Pop Star - Stage 4

Whispy Woods is the final obstacle Kirby faces at the end of the Pop Star realm in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. Here, Kirby does battle with the old tree (now sporting a checkerboard pattern on his bark) in a circular ring. As such, Kirby cannot attack Whispy's trunk directly as per usual. Instead, Kirby must first defeat all three of Whispy Woods' children (called Whispy Woods Jr.), and then provoke the tree into sending his roots out to attack. Kirby can then strike these roots to defeat the tree and move on with his adventure.

Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble

Whispy serves as a warp zone.

In Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble, Whispy Woods is not a boss. Instead, he can be found in Lvl 3-1 and Lvl 6-1 off the beaten path. When Kirby talks to Whispy, the old tree will offer to send him to a later level. In 3-1, Kirby can skip to Level 6, and in 6-1, Kirby can skip to Level 8. Details on how to reach him can be found on the related stage pages where he appears.

Kirby Air Ride

Whispy Woods can be found in a small grove of trees in the City Trial map in Kirby Air Ride. He doesn't do anything to the Kirbys, but bumping into him will cause him to take damage and hitting him enough times will 'defeat' him, leaving him in his defeat pose for the rest of the match. In this state it is no longer possible to interact with him.

Kirby: Squeak Squad

Whispy is not fought as a boss in Kirby: Squeak Squad, but he does appear on the title screen, using his appearance as a boss from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.

Kirby's Epic Yarn / Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn

Tankbot Kirby battles Whispy Woods.
This forest king has lived in Dream Land for ages. He's always in Kirby's way.
— Whispy Woods' Patch Plaza description in Kirby's Epic Yarn

In Kirby's Epic Yarn and its 3DS version, Whispy Woods is fought as a mid-boss in Whispy's Forest—the first stage of Dream Land. Kirby fights Whispy with his Tankbot form, using missiles to attack Whispy's body. Whispy's attacks pattern are the same from other Kirby games: he can spit out Air Bullets to damage Kirby and can throw Apples in a faster way than his earlier appearances, though both of these can be shot down using missiles. Notably, Whispy Woods begins to sag more and more as he takes damage, eventually becoming scrunched down when he is defeated.

Kirby Mass Attack

Screenshot of Whispy Woods in Kirby Mass Attack.
I feel like I've seen the boss of this island somewhere before... If you're trying to cut him down to size, I'd say you should attack the hard parts of his body. Watch out for the spiked balls though. Keep your eyes peeled for attacks from above. After he drops those, I bet he'll get tired and stop moving for a little while. That's the time to strike!
— Daroach in Kirby Mass Attack

In Kirby Mass Attack, Whispy Woods appears as the boss of Green Grounds. Rather than his usual strategy of dropping apples, the massive tree drops huge spiked balls which, if colored red, will shatter once they hit the ground, and if colored green, they will bounce about. Whispy also rises up into several segments that sprout bouncy mushrooms or dangerous spikes. When not having neither mushrooms or spikes sprouted, these segments must be struck until they break, so that the main tree can be hit and defeated. Later in the game, the Kirbys have a rematch against Whispy Woods in Necro Nebula, where he features a purple color scheme, both on his leaves and his trunk.

Whispy Woods also appears as the first boss of the Sub-Games Strato Patrol EOS and Kirby Brawlball. Flanked by three Bigger Beanbons in Strato Patrol EOS, Whispy attacks by dropping three bouncy fruits or turning his nose into missiles, as well as being defended by the Beanbons and their explosive seeds.

In Kirby Brawlball, he does not use apples for unknown reasons, instead relying only on his Air Bullets.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Screenshot of normal boss (top) and EX boss (bottom) from Kirby's Return to Dream Land

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Whispy Woods once again appears as the boss of the first level of the game, Cookie Country, and has been given more attacks in said game than in any previous incarnation, especially in Extra Mode. Whispy Woods will once again use the initial strategy of dropping apples and puffing air in the beginning stages. Additionally, Whispy Woods will grow significantly larger once his health drops to about half, dropping enemies such as Waddle Dees and Gordos. Whispy Woods will also inhale Kirby and chew on him, causing damage, forcing the player to shake the Wii Remote to allow Kirby to escape.

The following lists all of Whispy's attacks in the Main Mode of Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Attacks in italics are used in the second phase of the fight only.

Attacks - Main Mode
Attack Description
Apple Drop Whispy drops three apples that bounce along the ground. These can be inhaled and spat back at Whispy.
In the second phase, more apples of different sizes can be dropped.
Air Bullet Whispy spits two to four Air Bullets that travel a short distance then rise up or down.
Can be dodged by going right next to Whispy.
In the second phase, this attack can create up to six Air Bullets that spread out in clusters of two.
Como Drop Three Comos swing down from Whispy's canopy to do his bidding. They rise back up if not interacted with.
Whispy Inhale Whispy preps himself and then starts inhaling for an extended period. He always begins the second phase with this attack.
If Kirby is captured, Whispy will chew until the player shakes the Wii Remote enough to let him escape.
Variety Drop Several different enemies form within Whispy's canopy, then drop to attack Kirby.
These can include Bronto Burt, Gordo, Waddle Dee and Como.
Attack names are conjectural.

In Extra Mode, Whispy Woods EX has a more toxic-looking color scheme: his bark is a duller gray and his leaves have changed from green to a deep purple, similar to Whispy's Revenge. His pre-existing attacks are now stronger and he has more attacks, as outlined below:

Attacks - Extra Mode
Attack Description
Apple Drop EX Whispy drops up to four apples that bounce along the ground. One or more apples is poisonous, which will hurt Kirby if he attempts to swallow it.
Whispy may also throw large Gordos or Comos in to the mix.
Gust Bullet Whispy spits out three small tornadoes that spin quickly across the ground before rising to the left.
Air Bullet EX Whispy spits out up to four Air Bullets of purple gas that move in erratic patterns.
In the second phase, Whispy will release a cluster of three Air Bullets, then follow with a Gust Bullet.
Root Attack Whispy shoots his roots out in sharp spikes near his trunk, to fend off would-be attackers.
Whispy Inhale EX Whispy preps himself and then starts inhaling for an extended period. If Kirby is captured, Whispy will chew until the player shakes the Wii Remote enough to let him escape.
Additionally, Whispy will drop apples or Gordos to attempt to trip up anyone trying to run away.
Variety Drop EX Several different enemies form within Whispy's canopy, then drop to attack Kirby.
These can include Bronto Burt, Gordo, Waddle Dee, Scarfy and Como.
Attack names are conjectural.

Defeating Whispy Woods will cause him to shrink to smaller than when the battle started (notably in the canopy area) and yield the Lor Starcutter's lost Oars, while producing his charismatic tear.

Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition

Whispy tries to eat Kirby in the Smash Combat Chamber EX.

In addition to his appearance in the games featured in the collection, Whispy makes an appearance in New Challenge Stages of Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition, serving as the final opponent in the Smash Combat Chamber EX. His appearance and fighting style is taken directly from Kirby's Return to Dream Land, but notably, while he bears his normal color scheme, he fights like his EX version except he does not attack with his roots. Like in the Team Kirby Clash games, Whispy's health bar is not visible during the fight.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

In Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Whispy Woods only appears as a rare collectible Keychain. It is based on his appearance in Kirby's Dream Land, and depicts the entire area around him because Whispy serves as both a background element and a boss in that game. In this game, Whispy's typical role as a first boss is replaced with a similar entity called Flowery Woods. Whispy Woods is mentioned in Flowery Woods DX's pause screen caption, where it says the relation between the two is unknown.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse

Whispy Woods in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
When most people think Whispy Woods, they think apples! But this Whispy Woods can't grow apples, so he simply drops bombs instead. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but I don't think the same thing can be said for bombs.
— Figurine quote regarding Whispy Woods.

Whispy is fought three times in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, first at the end of Green Valley, again at the end of Blue Sky Palace, and one last time in Challenge 48. Unlike most other incidents of this boss, Whispy does not use apples to attack, and instead he must be damaged by crashing into his face with a Touch Dash or a Star Dash. When he is fought in Blue Sky Palace, he turns himself metal, meaning that only a Star Dash can hurt him. When half of his health is depleted, he will summon Bronto Knights to protect him. In his metal form, he will summon Barampas.

Notably, in the initial reveal teaser for Kirby and the Rainbow Curse at E3 2014, Kirby was shown battling Whispy Woods using a cannon, which is not present in the final version of the fight.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

Whispy Woods in Team Kirby Clash
Fell the Ancient Tree who lives in the old ruins. But watch out for worms and falling apples!
— Quest description from Team Kirby Clash

In Kirby: Planet Robobot, Whispy Woods serves as a boss in the Sub-Game Team Kirby Clash. His ability to leap between the foreground and background and some of his attacks take cues from his Kirby: Triple Deluxe relative, Flowery Woods. For more information on these attacks, see the Team Kirby Clash Deluxe & Super Kirby Clash section below.

Main article: Clanky Woods

In the Story Mode, Whispy has been mechanized and turned into Clanky Woods. He can now move around due to the spindly "legs" on his base.

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe & Super Kirby Clash

— Ordeal flavor text from Team Kirby Clash Deluxe

Whispy Woods is encountered twice in Team Kirby Clash Deluxe and thrice in its successor Super Kirby Clash. Both games treat Whispy Woods the exact same way, with the fights being almost indistinguishable. The first fight is much the same as it was in the original Sub-Game, but later fights throw Gordos into the mix, and make his leaping attacks quicker and more unpredictable.

In Team Kirby Clash Deluxe specifically, Whispy serves the role of the second Ordeal in his first encounter, with his defeat unlocking the Volcano region.

Attack Description Variants
Apple Drop Whispy Woods drops Apples from his canopy, which bounce along the ground and can be knocked away. Sometimes, these are dropped from the background as extra large apples.
Air Bullet Whispy Woods shoots out air bullets which travel in a slight arc. Sometimes, these can split into two which travel perpendicular to the original one's path. These can also be fired from the background.
Caterpillar Drop Whispy Woods drops Caterpillars from his canopy, which fall quickly to the ground and can be knocked away.
Stomp Jump Whispy Woods is able to uproot and leap into the background, or to a different part of the arena. Kirbys caught underneath the tree are flattened, and put out of commission until Whispy leaps again. Sometimes, Whispy grows bigger during leaps.
Gordo Drop Whispy Woods drops Gordos from his canopy, which bounce along the ground and cannot be knocked away. Sometimes, these are dropped from the background as extra large Gordos.
Propeller Apples Whispy Woods sends apples with propeller leaves in from the background to fly at Team Kirby.
Attack names are conjectural unless otherwise stated.

Kirby Star Allies

Whispy Woods in Kirby Star Allies

Whispy Woods returns as a boss in Kirby Star Allies. His fight is similar to earlier bouts, though with his ability to jump like Flowery Woods now firmly established. Partway into the fight, Whispy grows much larger, and starts emitting purple gas from his eyes and mouth. From here, his attacks become much more potent, with a prominent example being his ability to shower the entire area with hundreds of Apples. This increased power is the result of Whispy Woods absorbing one of the Dark Hearts that fell onto Popstar. When Whispy Woods is defeated, the heart pops out of him before he ceases fighting.

Whispy Woods on fire

In addition to his powered-up attacks, Whispy has a severe weakness to Fire-based attacks. If Kirby and all of his allies attack him at once using fiery attacks during the second phase, Whispy will catch fire, and continually take damage until defeated, being no longer able to fight. Whispy also has an older relative in this title, called Yggy Woods, and an even more powerful relative from Another Dimension known as Parallel Woods. Whispy is the only one of these trees that can be befriended upon defeat, though only in Fruity Forest. When befriended, Whispy will drop a large amount of items, including fruit, some Point Stars, and a Picture Piece.

The following table lists all of Whispy Woods' attacks in Kirby Star Allies. Attacks in italics are used in the second phase only:

Whispy Woods' Attacks in Kirby Star Allies
Attack Description
Apple Drop Whispy drops three apples from his canopy, which can be inhaled and spat back at him.
Air Bullet Whispy first shoots 2 Air Bullets and then 4 in a row. This leaves Drop Stars on impact. In Phase 2, Whispy shoots three Air Bullets, then shoots 4 sets of 2 rapid-fire. These leaves Drop Stars on impact.
Whispy Inhale Whispy attempts to inhale Kirby and his allies. If successful, he will chew on them, then spit them back out. If Kirby and his allies avoid the suction for long enough, Whispy will tire out and be left vulnerable to attacks.
Burst Fruits Whispy lets down much burning fruits on vines. These can be swallowed for the Fire ability. If cooled down using a water, ice or wind-based attack, they yield Food items.
Enemy Drop Whispy shakes out a number of different enemies from his canopy, which include those that can be made into allies. In phase 1, Whispy will drop four enemies from his canopy. On Falluna Moon in phase 2, Whispy will drop six enemies from his canopy, three on each side. The enemies that fall in both phases will always consist of Waddle Dees, Burning Leos, Blade Knights and Chillys.
Great Harvest Apple Festival Whispy shakes violently, causing many apples to fall from his canopy. Chumbrella can protect any player beneath it.
Stomp Jump Whispy jumps, letting anyone go to the other side. Not considered as an attack, but can crush anyone below Whispy. When he lands, any enemies still present on-screen on Falluna Moon will instantly be destroyed.
Attack names listed are taken from Japanese guide books.

Whispy Woods' attacks for Phase 1 are in a fixed order on loop as follows:

  1. Apple Drop
  2. Air Bullet
  3. Whispy Inhale
  4. Burst Fruits

Kirby Fighters 2

While Whispy doesn't appear physically appear in this game, his dual version, Twin Woods, does. One of the Rare Hats for the Staff Copy Ability, the Whispy Headgear, is also based on him.

Kirby's Dream Buffet

Whispy Woods as he appears in Kirby's Dream Buffet.

Whispy Woods makes an appearance in cake form as a stage hazard in Kirby's Dream Buffet. He is primarily found on the Whispy Stage Cake Battle Royale stage, and routinely hops back and forth between three different positions on the board: left, center, and right. When Kirby bumps into him, he will drop strawberries from his canopy, dropping a greater amount if he had not been hit for a while. Much like in City Trial, if Whispy is hit too many times, he will be "defeated" and adopt his sad expression. He will drop a lot of strawberries when this happens, but afterward he will cease to drop any for a while. When the time is up in the game, Whispy Woods will smile and waves his stump arms along with the Kirbys.

Whispy Woods also makes an appearance in the Free Rolling Mode, where he can be found near the back of the stage on the right side, near some Food Boxes and Gordos. His behavior is largely the same as it is on his Battle Royale stage, but he always stays put. If Kirby knocks a Waddle Dee treat into him, he will celebrate and drop lots of Strawberries for Kirby.

Lastly, Whispy Woods' likeness appears on a Character Treat, depicting his art from Kirby's Dream Land.

Whispy Woods has appeared in every Super Smash Bros. game as a stage hazard for Kirby-based stages. In the original N64 game, he appears as part of the Dream Land stage, occasionally blowing gusts of wind that cause all the players on one side of the stage to slide sideways. Oddly, Whispy's name is misspelt as "Whisper Woods" in the instruction manual.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Whispy Woods is found in the background of the Green Greens stage. He will occasionally blow, which will move the fighters. He will also sometimes launch several apples onto the stage, which can be eaten as healing items or thrown at opponents (this is determined at random when the apple is picked up).

Likewise, whenever these two stages were featured in later installments, Whispy Woods would follow them. At least one of these stages appears in every subsequent game in the series.

In addition, in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he appears as a ★★★ shield-type primary spirit. His level 1 stats are 1,183 attack and 1,813 defense, and his level 99 stats are 3,565 attack and 5,461 defense.

Super Smash Bros. Melee Whispy Woods Melee Trophy.png Game Boy Kirby's Dream Land A boss enemy from Kirby's Dream Land. Whispy Woods is a big tree that shoots whirlwinds at Kirby. It isn't the toughest enemy: all Kirby has to do is avoid the occasional whirlwind, suck in apples that fall down, and then shoot them back at the tree. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Whispy Woods is quite the blowhard.

American English: Whispy Woods lives deep in the forest, waiting patiently for Kirby to stop by so he can share his delicious apples with the pink hero... That's not true at all, actually. Instead, he drops apples on Kirby, trying to cause him injury. He may look friendly, but remember what they say: don't judge a tree by its bark.

British English: In the heart of a beautiful green forest, Whispy Woods is waiting to give Kirby some juicy red apples. Isn't that nice? Well...not really, since he drops them on Kirby's head like bombs. If that wasn't bad enough, he'll also suck up the pink puffball and blast him with air. Note to self: be more wary of trees with faces.

Whispy Woods is a minor character in the anime series, Kirby: Right Back at Ya!. He can be found residing in Dream Land, in the aptly named Whispy Woods Forest. Here, he is capable of speech, and is not inherently hostile to Kirby or his friends, but he does run into a misunderstanding or two with them in some of the episodes. Whispy is primarily responsible for keeping the woods surrounding him healthy, and is often the target of King Dedede, who wants him gone in order to clear the forest and build a country club in its place.

Kirby's Dream Land Super Game Boy Nintendo Player's Guide

In the Wispy Woods
At the very end of this level, a new type of boss is waiting, the Larkspur Liar. From deep within his trunk, he'll spew oak chunks and chestnuts. On top of that, the other trees in the woods will try to crush Kirby with their fruit. But the Larkspur isn't a very tough boss. Kirby simply has to catch a few of the fallen apples and throw them at Larkspur Liar to defeat him.

This lively tree is a protector of the forest, and somehow he always ends up in Kirby’s way.
His bark is usually worse than his bite, but he’ll fight back if you step on his roots. And, if you make him really mad, he’ll even toss his apples at you!

Trivia

  • In early games in the Kirby series, the actual entity of Whispy Woods was little more than his face. The tree was just a background element. Kirby also gets hurt when touching Whispy's face/nose in some of these games.
  • Whispy Woods (not counting his relatives) has appeared in a total of 23 Kirby games, 18 of which were as a Boss or Mid-Boss. This ranks Whispy Woods as the second most prevalent boss character after Kracko (not counting King Dedede, who makes appearances as a playable character just as often as a Boss).
  • Whispy Woods is typically portrayed as being roughly 9 Kirbys tall, before any other transformations or changes in size are taken into account. Given Kirby's height of eight inches, this would make the tree roughly six feet (or 1.83 meters) tall.
  • Prior to Kirby Super Star, and past that up to Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble, Whispy Woods was depicted without any lower stubs or branches on his sides. From Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land onward, Whispy fairly consistently has two stubs on his sides which resemble arms to an extent, but are completely useless to the tree. In some newer games, such as Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, he is depicted with only one; in others, such as Kirby Mass Attack, he has none at all.
