Whispy Woods, also known as Whispy, is one of the most iconic bosses appearing in the Kirby series. Starting with Kirby's Dream Land, the first game in said series, he appears in a majority of titles, as well as the anime, Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, in the form of an autonomous tree, which can perceive and produce human-like emotion with the anthropomorphic face situated on the front of its trunk. While this boss is usually the first one to be fought by Kirby, on its appearances alone, it has become quite the staple of the Kirby franchise, in the same vein as Kirby's home world, Pop Star.

Game Appearances

Kirby Super Star

In Kirby Super Star and its remake Kirby Super Star Ultra, Whispy Woods will be first encountered in the enhanced remake of Kirby's Dream Land, Spring Breeze, serving as the first boss in the game. He will fight in a similar way as in the other games, such as dropping apples, and blow puffs of air at Kirby. He will be fought again in Revenge of Meta Knight, where he will fight in exactly in the same manner as before. As soon as Kirby defeats him, Kirby will drop down under the ground to find a sub-species of Whispy Woods named Twin Woods. It, again, will use the same techniques described above.

Whispy Woods also makes an appearance in the game Dyna Blade, where Kirby will feed some of its apples to Dyna Blade's children.

Kirby's Adventure/Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land

In Kirby's Adventure and Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Whispy Woods appears as a main boss of the first world, Vegetable Valley. Here, he is anchored to one spot, and will occasionally drop apples to attack Kirby. He is also able blow violent puffs of breath.

Whispy Woods is the final obstacle Kirby will face at the end of the Pop Star realm, in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. While the boss itself is anchored to its spot, and rightly so, as it is a tree, the foe will take damage based on the bodily extensions it provides during the battle: in the beginning, three smaller versions of Whispy Woods, called Whispy Woods Jr., jump about the stage, oblivious to Kirby, while later on Whispy Woods attempts to injure Kirby by sending out stocky wood spikes, all of which are vulnerable to attack. During the battle, Whispy Woods will consistently shake itself, dropping apples that can be used as projectiles, however, it seems as if the falling fruits were originally intended to act as one of Whispy Woods' attacks, not a beneficiary on Kirby's part. Of all of Whispy Woods' attacks, of which can all be avoided, the least significant is the small puff of air it sporadically blows from its mouth cavity, doing a small amount of damage to Kirby in the event he is in its path.

As so with all types of enemies and bosses, if Kirby is in possession of a certain copy ability (i.e. Fire, Cutter, etc.) or a combination of two, he will be able to use such powers to injure the boss, instead of the fallen apples provided, as in this battle.

Kirby: Squeak Squad

Whispy is not fought as a boss in this game. However, he appears on the title screen.

Kirby's Epic Yarn

In Kirby's Epic Yarn, Whispy Woods is fought as a mid-boss in Whispy's Forest, the first stage of Dream Land. Kirby fights Whispy with his Tankbot form, using missiles to attack Whispy's body. Whispy's attacks pattern are the same from other Kirby games: he can create an air puff to damage Kirby and can throw apples, in a faster way the than his earlier appearances, though.

This forest king has lived
in Dream Land for ages.
He's always in Kirby's way.

Kirby Mass Attack

In Kirby Mass Attack, Whispy Woods appears as the boss of Green Grounds. Rather than his usual strategy of dropping apples, the massive tree drops huge spiky fruits which, depending on their Template:Colour, may either shatter or bounce. Whispy also rises up into several segments that sprout bouncy mushrooms or spikes. These segments must be pummeled until they break, so that the main tree can be hit and defeated.

Whispy Woods also appears as the first boss of the minigame Strato Patrol EOS. Flanked by three huge Beanbons, Whispy attacks by dropping three bouncy fruits or launching wooden missiles, as well as being defended by the Beanbons and their explosive seeds.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Whispy Woods once again appears as the boss of the first level of the game, Cookie Country, and has been given more attacks in said game than in any previous incarnation, especially in Extra Mode. Whispy Woods will once again use the initial strategy of dropping apples and puffing air in the beginning stages. Additionally, Whispy Woods will grow significantly larger once its health drops to about half, dropping enemies such as Waddle Dees and Gordos. Whispy Woods will also inhale Kirby and chew on him, causing damage, forcing the unknown reader to shake the Wii Remote to escape.

The following lists all of Whispy's attacks in the Main Game of Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Attacks in italics are used in the second phase of the fight only.

Attacks - Main Game
Attack Description
Apple Drop
Whispy drops three apples that bounce along the ground. These can be inhaled and spat back at Whispy. In the second phase, more apples of different sizes can be dropped.
Puff Attack
Whispy spits two to four puffs of air that travel a short distance then rise up or down. In the second phase, this attack can create up to six puffs that spread out in clusters of two.
Como Drop
Three Comos swing down from Whispy's canopy to do his bidding. They rise back up if not interacted with.
Inhale
Whispy preps itself and then starts inhaling for an extended period. If Kirby is captured, Whispy will chew until the unknown reader shakes the Wii Remote enough to escape.
Variety Drop
Several different enemies form within Whispy's canopy, then drop to attack Kirby. These can include Bronto Burt, Gordo, Waddle Dee and Como.

In Extra Mode, Whispy Woods (EX) has a more toxic-looking colTemplate:Our scheme: its bark is a duller Template:Grey and its leaves have changed from green to a deep purple. More and better attacks are available to it, as outlined below:

Attacks - Extra Mode
Attack Description
Apple Drop EX
Whispy drops up to four apples that bounce along the ground. One or more apples is poisonous, which will hurt Kirby if he attempts to swallow it. Whispy may also throw large Gordos or Comos in to the mix.
Gust Attack
Whispy spits out three small tornadoes that spin quickly across the ground before rising to the left.
Puff Attack EX
Whispy spits out up to four puffs of purple gas that move in erratic patterns. In the second phase, Whispy will release a cluster of three puffs, then follow with a Gust Attack.
Root Spike
Whispy shoots its roots out in sharp spikes near its trunk, to fend off would-be attackers.
Inhale EX
Whispy preps itself and then starts inhaling for an extended period. If Kirby is captured, Whispy will chew until the unknown reader shakes the Wii Remote enough to escape. Additionally, Whispy will drop apples to attempt to trip up anyone trying to run away.
Variety Drop EX
Several different enemies form within Whispy's canopy, then drop to attack Kirby. These can include Bronto Burt, Gordo, Waddle Dee, Scarfy and Como.

Defeating Whispy Woods will cause it to shrink to smaller than when the battle started (especially in the canopy area) and yield the Lor Starcutter's lost Oars, while producing its charismatic tear. Why a tree wanted a pair of oars in the first place is known only to itself.

Kirby's Dream Collection

In addition to his appearance in the games featured in the collection, Whispy makes an appearance in New Challenge Stages, serving as the final opponent in the Smash Combat Chamber EX. His appearance and fighting style is taken directly from Return to Dream Land, but notably, while he bears its normal colTemplate:Our scheme, he fights like its EX version. Unlike in any other appearance, Whispy's Vitality bar is not visible during the fight.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

Whispy Woods serves as a boss to be fought in the Sub-Game Team Kirby Clash. His ability to leap between the foreground and background takes cues from his Triple Deluxe relative, Flowery Woods. In the main game, Whispy has been mechanized and turned into Clanky Woods.

Whispy is encountered twice in this expanded spin-off title. The first fight is much the same as it was in the original Sub-Game, but the second throws Gordos into the mix, and makes his leaping attacks quicker and more unpredictable.

Whispy serves the role of Ordeal in his first encounter, with his defeat unlocking the Volcano region.

Kirby: Star Allies

Whispy Woods is set to return as a boss in this installment. He will be fought much like in previous titles, but has the ability to shower Kirby and his friends with countless apples. He also appears to have purple gas steaming from his eyes and mouth, suggesting he might be possessed by something.

Super Smash Bros. series

File:WhispyWoodsMeleeTrophy.png
Whispy Woods' trophy in Melee.

Whispy Woods has appeared in the first three of the Super Smash Bros. games as a stage hazard for Kirby-based stages. In SSB, he appears at part of the Dream Land stage, occasionally blowing gusts of wind that cause all the players on one side of the stage to slide sideways. Oddly, Whispy's name is misspelt as "Whisper Woods" in the North American instruction manual.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Whispy Woods is found in the background of the Green Greens stage. He will occasionally blow, which will move the fighters. He will also sometimes launch several apples onto the stage, which can be eaten as healing items or thrown at opponents (this is determined at random when the apple is picked up). As the stage Dream Land returns from SSB, Whispy Woods is found there as well.

Whispy Woods makes a reappearance along with the Green Greens stage in the Super Smash Bros. Brawl, having the same role that he had in the previous game. He is not part of any new stages, however.

Whispy appears, albeit only as a background element in the Dream Land stage in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. Apart from a trophy, he is completely absent from the Wii U version.

Melee Trophy Description

A boss enemy from Kirby's Dream Land. Whispy Woods is a big tree that shoots whirlwinds at Kirby. It isn't the toughest enemy: all Kirby has to do is avoid the occasional whirlwind, suck in apples that fall down, and then shoot them back at the tree. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Whispy Woods is quite the blowhard.

Wii U Trophy Description

Whispy Woods lives deep in the forest, waiting patiently for Kirby to stop by so he can share his delicious apples with the pink hero... That's not true at all, actually. Instead, he drops apples on Kirby, trying to cause him injury. He may look friendly, but remember what they say: don't judge a tree by its bark.

Battling Style

This table describes Whispy's recurring attacks in Kirby's 2D adventures:

Trivia

  • There could be a possibility that the Wicked Willows are based on Whispy Woods' appearance since both are large tree enemies, thus looking similar, and both appear at the end of a level.
  • According to Flowery Woods DX's pause-screen description, Flowery Woods' relation to Whispy Woods is unknown. It is interesting to note that while Whispy has lived in Dream Land for a long time, Flowery Woods is merely an ordinary flower in Floralia, the kingdom in Dream Land's sky, until Taranza uses his magic during the events of Kirby: Triple Deluxe to turn it into the monster that Kirby faces.
