Whispy Woods is a minor character in the anime series, ''[[Kirby: Right Back At Ya!]]''. He can be found residing in [[Dream Land]], in the aptly named [[Whispy Woods Forest]]. Here, he is capable of speech, and is not inherently hostile to Kirby or his friends, but he does run into a misunderstanding or two with them in some of the episodes. Whispy is primarily responsible for keeping the woods surrounding him healthy, and is often the target of [[King Dedede]], who wants him gone in order to clear the forest and build a country club in its place.

This article is about Whispy Woods as a character. For other uses, see Whispy Woods (disambiguation).

Whispy Woods (known in shorthand as Whispy or sometimes Wispy) is an anthropomorphic tree-like entity, having become one of the most iconic characters appearing in the Kirby series. Starting with Kirby's Dream Land, the first game in said series, he appears in a majority of titles, as well as the anime, Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, where Whispy is an allied character and is respected for his wisdom. In the games in which he appears, Whispy is usually faced as a Boss, often being the first one encountered. As such, he is easily recognizable as part of the Kirby series, even to those outside of the fandom. Whispy Woods is extremely ubiquitous throughout the Kirby series, appearing in nearly every title as a Boss or Mid-Boss. Even in games where he does not explicitly appear, another character which greatly resembles him (such as King Golem, Flowery Woods, or Clanky Woods) usually appears in his place.

Appearance

Whispy Woods is characterized as an anthropomorphized apple tree with a humanoid 'face', though his nose is just a branch and his eyes and mouth are holes in his trunk which can widen and contract as needed. Being a tree, Whispy cannot move very much, usually being rooted to a fixed location whenever he is encountered. Whispy is (for reasons known or unknown) usually hostile towards Kirby and his friends, and attacks mainly by dropping Apples from his canopy, or by blowing out Air Bullets from his mouth. His apples can be Inhaled and used against him, and he is particularly weak to Fire-based attacks as well. Whispy Woods seems to be able to move due to his being featured in different locations, a fact which was first confirmed in Kirby's Dream Land 3.

Artwork of Whispy Woods from Kirby Super Star.

Location

Whispy Woods makes his home in the lush greenery of Dream Land on Planet Popstar, usually within a thick forest area. It is unknown if he routinely migrates, or if he lives in the same spot while the scenery changes around him (as he can be found in many differently-named areas, it may be that the area he resides in simply gets renamed again and again). However, he can also be found in other more remote places, such as the Popopo Island of Green Grounds, or on other worlds entirely, like planet Floria (as Twin Woods) and on Falluna Moon, which would suggest that there is more than one Whispy.

Relatives and Similar

Being one of the most iconic characters, Whispy Woods has many relatives and off-shoots, as well as other characters, enemies and bosses which are similar to him. These include the following:

Game Appearances

Kirby's Dream Land

File:Whispy Woods KDL screenshot.png
Whispy Woods makes his first appearance in Kirby's Dream Land.

Whispy Woods is the first Boss of the game, fought at the end of Green Greens. His attack patterns are extremely simple, and will either shoot out a few Air Bullets at Kirby, or will drop Apples from his canopy. Kirby can inhale the apples and spit them back out as Star Bullets to deal Whispy damage. After six hits, he stops fighting, and yields one of the Sparkling Stars for Kirby to collect.

In the Extra Game, Whispy will also drop Gordos from his canopy.

Kirby's Adventure / Nightmare in Dream Land

File:Whispy Woods KA.png
Whispy Woods' appearance in Kirby's Adventure

Whispy is faced at the end of Vegetable Valley. His attack patterns are exactly the same as in Kirby's Dream Land. Once defeated, Whispy sheds a tear and yields the first piece of the Star Rod for Kirby to collect.

Whispy is also the first boss that Kirby will face as part of the Boss Endurance.

Kirby's Pinball Land

Whispy is the last obstacle of Wispy-Woods Land, faced in a separate board. Like in his main game incarnations, he will drop apples and shoot out air bullets, which act as bumpers. He may also drop Gordos from his canopy which are capable of disabling the flippers. Kirby has to crash into his face eight times to defeat him and clear the course.

Kirby's Dream Course

Whispy is not a boss in this game. Instead, he can be seen in several locations, either offstage, or as a stage hazard. He can be destroyed using offensive Copy Abilities like Burning or Spark.

Kirby's Dream Land 2

File:Whispy Woods KDL2.png
Whispy Woods plays at being a surgeon.

Whispy serves as the first boss, at the end of Grass Land. For unknown reasons, he is wearing a surgical mask and goggles at first, preventing him from shooting out air bullets. However, he can now attack with his roots. Once he is hit enough times, these come off, and the fight becomes as usual.

Whispy also participates in the Grass Land Bonus Chance, where he spits out Apples and Point Stars, the latter of which Kirby needs to collect.

Kirby's Avalanche

Please don't tread on my roots, it would not be a wise decision.
— Whispy Woods

Whispy is the second opponent fought in the main game. He is relatively easy, and will always start the match by trying to build four rows of puyo-puyo at the bottom.

Kirby's Block Ball

Whispy Woods appears both as a regular enemy and as a Boss in Stage 8 of this title. His enemy variant takes 4 hits to defeat and is worth 5000 points. His boss form has 12 HP and is worth 50000 points when defeated. Whispy attacks by dropping Gordos from his canopy and spitting air bullets.

Kirby Super Star (Ultra)

In Kirby Super Star and its remake Kirby Super Star Ultra, Whispy Woods is first encountered in Spring Breeze, serving as the first intended boss in the game. He fights in a similar way as in the other games with his Apples and Air Bullets. Whispy Woods is seen again during Revenge of Meta Knight, and defeating him here leads to a second encounter with a dual version of himself called Twin Woods. Twin Woods is then faced one more time in Milky Way Wishes, as the boss of planet Floria.

Whispy Woods also makes an appearance in the game Dyna Blade, where Kirby will feed some of his apples to Dyna Blade's chicks.

Whispy's Revenge

Whispy's Revenge is a powered-up form of Whispy Woods in the Revenge of the King level in Kirby Super Star Ultra. He has purple leaves and stronger attacks. Whispy, in addition to the standard abilities of Whispy Woods, can now blow tornadoes, make Poison Apples fall from his leaves, and drop many Gordos and Caterpillars. While his boss icon depicts him with the arm-like stumps on his side, he does not have them in the battle.

Kirby's Dream Land 3

Whispy serves as the boss of the first level - Grass Land. Unlike in previous incarnations, Whispy will drop and spit out vegetables that Kirby must use to retaliate with. This battle comes in two phases, with the second involving Whispy uprooting and chasing Kirby down. He can kick Kirby away if he's near him.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

Main article: Pop Star - Stage 4
Whispy Woods and his children face off against Kirby in a circular ring.

Whispy Woods is the final obstacle Kirby faces at the end of the Pop Star realm, in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. Here, Kirby does battle with the old tree (now sporting a checkerboard pattern on his bark) in a circular ring. As such, Kirby cannot attack Whispy's trunk directly as per usual. Instead, Kirby must first defeat all three of Whispy Woods' children (called Whispy Woods Jr.), and then provoke the tree into sending his roots out to attack. Kirby can then strike these roots to defeat the tree and move on with his adventure.

Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble

File:TNT Whispy.jpg
Whispy serves as a warp zone.

In this title, Whispy Woods is not a boss. Instead, he can be found in Level 3-1 and Level 6-1 by accessing out-of-the-way Warp Stars in the courses. Whispy can then send Kirby to a later level, similarly to how a Warp Zone acts in certain Super Mario titles.

Kirby Air Ride

Whispy Woods can be found in a small grove of trees in the City Trial map. He doesn't do anything to the Kirbys, but hitting into him enough times will 'defeat' him.

Kirby: Squeak Squad

Whispy is not fought as a boss in this game. However, he appears on the title screen.

Kirby's Epic Yarn

File:Whispy's Forest Tankbot.jpg

This forest king has lived in Dream Land for ages. He's always in Kirby's way.
— Patch Plaza description

In Kirby's Epic Yarn, Whispy Woods is fought as a mid-boss in Whispy's Forest, the first stage of Dream Land. Kirby fights Whispy with his Tankbot form, using missiles to attack Whispy's body. Whispy's attacks pattern are the same from other Kirby games: he can create an Air Bullet to damage Kirby and can throw Apples in a faster way than his earlier appearances, though both of these can be shot down using missiles.

Kirby Mass Attack

File:KirbyDSWhispyWoods.png
Screenshot of Whispy Woods, in Kirby Mass Attack.

In Kirby Mass Attack, Whispy Woods appears as the boss of Green Grounds. Rather than his usual strategy of dropping apples, the massive tree drops huge spiky fruits which, depending on their Template:Colour, may either shatter or bounce. Whispy also rises up into several segments that sprout bouncy mushrooms or spikes. These segments must be pummeled until they break, so that the main tree can be hit and defeated.

Whispy Woods also appears as the first boss of the Sub-Games Strato Patrol EOS and Kirby Brawlball. Flanked by three Colossal Beanbons, Whispy attacks by dropping three bouncy fruits or turning his nose into missiles, as well as being defended by the Beanbons and their explosive seeds. In Kirby Brawlball, he does not use apples for unknown reasons, instead relying only on his Air Bullets.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land

File:KRtDL Whispy Woods.png
Screenshot of normal boss (top) and EX boss (bottom) from Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Whispy Woods once again appears as the boss of the first level of the game, Cookie Country, and has been given more attacks in said game than in any previous incarnation, especially in Extra Mode. Whispy Woods will once again use the initial strategy of dropping apples and puffing air in the beginning stages. Additionally, Whispy Woods will grow significantly larger once his health drops to about half, dropping enemies such as Waddle Dees and Gordos. Whispy Woods will also inhale Kirby and chew on him, causing damage, forcing the player to shake the Wii Remote to allow Kirby to escape.

The following lists all of Whispy's attacks in the Main Mode of Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Attacks in italics are used in the second phase of the fight only.

Attacks - Main Mode
Attack Description
Apple Drop Whispy drops three apples that bounce along the ground. These can be inhaled and spat back at Whispy.
In the second phase, more apples of different sizes can be dropped.
Air Bullet Whispy spits two to four Air Bullets of air that travel a short distance then rise up or down.
In the second phase, this attack can create up to six Air Bullets that spread out in clusters of two.
Como Drop Three Comos swing down from Whispy's canopy to do his bidding. They rise back up if not interacted with.
Whispy Inhale Whispy preps himself and then starts inhaling for an extended period.
If Kirby is captured, Whispy will chew until the player shakes the Wii Remote enough to let him escape.
Variety Drop Several different enemies form within Whispy's canopy, then drop to attack Kirby.
These can include Bronto Burt, Gordo, Waddle Dee and Como.

In Extra Mode, Whispy Woods EX has a more toxic-looking colTemplate:Our scheme: his bark is a duller Template:Grey and his leaves have changed from green to a deep purple, similar to Whispy's Revenge. More and better attacks are available to him, as outlined below:

Attacks - Extra Mode
Attack Description
Apple Drop EX Whispy drops up to four apples that bounce along the ground. One or more apples is poisonous, which will hurt Kirby if he attempts to swallow it.
Whispy may also throw large Gordos or Comos in to the mix.
Gust Bullet Whispy spits out three small tornadoes that spin quickly across the ground before rising to the left.
Air Bullet EX Whispy spits out up to four Air Bullets of purple gas that move in erratic patterns.
In the second phase, Whispy will release a cluster of three Air Bullets, then follow with a Gust Bullet.
Root Attack Whispy shoots his roots out in sharp spikes near his trunk, to fend off would-be attackers.
Whispy Inhale EX Whispy preps himself and then starts inhaling for an extended period. If Kirby is captured, Whispy will chew until the player shakes the Wii Remote enough to let him escape.
Additionally, Whispy will drop apples or Gordos to attempt to trip up anyone trying to run away.
Variety Drop EX Several different enemies form within Whispy's canopy, then drop to attack Kirby.
These can include Bronto Burt, Gordo, Waddle Dee, Scarfy and Como.

Defeating Whispy Woods will cause him to shrink to smaller than when the battle started (especially in the canopy area) and yield the Lor Starcutter's lost Oars, while producing his charismatic tear.

Kirby's Dream Collection

In addition to his appearance in the games featured in the collection, Whispy makes an appearance in New Challenge Stages, serving as the final opponent in the Smash Combat Chamber EX. His appearance and fighting style is taken directly from Return to Dream Land, but notably, while he bears his normal colTemplate:Our scheme, he fights like his EX version except he does not attack with his roots. Unlike in any other appearance, Whispy's stamina bar is not visible during the fight.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse

File:Whispy RC 1.jpg
Whispy Woods in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse.
When most people think Whispy Woods, they think apples! But this Whispy Woods can't grow apples, so he simply drops bombs instead. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but I don't think the same thing can be said for bombs.
— Figurine quote regarding Whispy Woods.

Whispy is fought twice in this title, first at the end of Green Valley, and again at the end of Blue Sky Palace. Unlike most other incidents of this boss, Whispy does not use Apples to attack, and instead he must be damaged by crashing into his face with a charge attack. When he is fought the second time, he turns himself metal, meaning that only a Star Dash can hurt him. When half of his stamina is depleted, he will summon Bronto Knights to protect him. In his metal form, he will summon Barampas.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

Whispy Woods serves as a boss to be fought in the Sub-Game Team Kirby Clash. His ability to leap between the foreground and background takes cues from his Triple Deluxe relative, Flowery Woods.

Main article: Clanky Woods

In the main game, Whispy has been mechanized and turned into Clanky Woods. He can now move around due to the spindly "legs" on his base.

Whispy Woods is encountered twice in Team Kirby Clash Deluxe and thrice in its successor Super Kirby Clash. Both games treat Whispy Woods the exact same way, with the fights being almost indistinguishable. The first fight is much the same as it was in the original Sub-Game, but the second throws Gordos into the mix, and makes his leaping attacks quicker and more unpredictable.

In Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, Whispy serves the role of the second Ordeal in his first encounter, with his defeat unlocking the Volcano region. In Super Kirby Clash, Whispy is not faced as an ordeal at all.

Attack Description Variants Notes
Air Bullet Whispy Woods shoots out air bullets which travel in a slight arc. Sometimes, these can split into two which travel perpendicular to the original one's path. These can also be fired from the background.
Apple Drop Whispy Woods drops Apples from his canopy, which bounce along the ground and can be knocked away. Sometimes, these are dropped from the background as extra large apples.
Gordo Drop Whispy Woods drops Gordos from his canopy, which bounce along the ground and cannot be knocked away. Sometimes, these are dropped from the background as extra large Gordos.
Caterpillar Drop Whispy Woods drops Caterpillars from his canopy, which fall quickly to the ground and can be knocked away.
Propeller Apples Whispy Woods sends apples with propeller leaves in from the background to fly at Team Kirby.
Leap Whispy Woods is able to uproot and leap into the background, or to a different part of the arena. Kirbys caught underneath the tree are flattened, and put out of commission until Whispy leaps again. Sometimes, Whispy grows bigger during leaps.

Kirby Star Allies

Whispy Woods returns as a boss in this installment. His fight is similar to earlier bouts, though with his ability to jump like Flowery Woods now firmly established. Partway into the fight, Whispy grows much larger, and starts emitting purple gas from his eyes and mouth. From here, his attacks become much more potent, with a prominent example being his ability to shower the entire area with hundreds of Apples. This purple effect appears to be a result of the shower of magic that occurs in the opening cut-scene of the game. When Whispy Woods is defeated, a purple heart pops out of him before he ceases fighting.

File:Burning Whispy.jpg

In addition to his powered-up attacks, Whispy has a severe weakness to Fire-based attacks. If Kirby and all of his allies attack him at once using fiery attacks during the second phase, Whispy will catch fire, and continually take damage until defeated, being no longer able to fight. Whispy also has an older relative in this title, called Yggy Woods, and an even more powerful relative known as Parallel Woods. Whispy can be befriended upon defeat, though Yggy and Parallel Woods cannot.

The following table lists all of Whispy Woods' attacks in Kirby Star Allies. Attacks in italics are used in the second phase only:

Whispy Woods' Attacks in Kirby Star Allies
Attack Description
Air Bullet Whispy first shoots 2 Air Bullets and then 4 in a row. This leaves Recoil Star on impact.
Burst Fruits Whispy lets down much burning fruits on vines. These can be swallowed for the Fire ability. If cooled down using a water, ice or wind-based attack, they yield Food items.
Apple Drop Whispy drops one or more apples, which can be inhaled and spat back at him.
Enemy Drop Whispy shakes out a number of different enemies from his canopy. These include enemies that can be made into allies.
Whispy Inhale Whispy attempts to inhale Kirby and his allies. If successful, he will chew on them, then spit them back out.
Great Harvest Apple Festival Whispy uproots and jumps to the center. Then, he shakes violently, causing many apples to fall from its canopy. Chumbrella can protect any player beneath it.
Jump Whispy jumps, letting anyone go to the other side. Not considered as an attack, but can crush anyone below Whispy.
Attack names listed are taken from Japanese guide books.

Super Smash Bros. series

Whispy Woods has appeared in the first three of the Super Smash Bros. games as a stage hazard for Kirby-based stages. In SSB, he appears at part of the Dream Land stage, occasionally blowing gusts of wind that cause all the players on one side of the stage to slide sideways. Oddly, Whispy's name is misspelt as "Whisper Woods" in the instruction manual.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Whispy Woods is found in the background of the Green Greens stage. He will occasionally blow, which will move the fighters. He will also sometimes launch several apples onto the stage, which can be eaten as healing items or thrown at opponents (this is determined at random when the apple is picked up).

Likewise, whenever these two stages were featured in later installments, Whispy Woods would follow them. At least one of these stages appears in every subsequent game in the series.

In addition, in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he appears as a ★★★ shield-type primary spirit. His level 1 stats are 1,183 attack and 1,813 defense, and his level 99 stats are 3,565 attack and 5,461 defense.

American English: Whispy Woods lives deep in the forest, waiting patiently for Kirby to stop by so he can share his delicious apples with the pink hero... That's not true at all, actually. Instead, he drops apples on Kirby, trying to cause him injury. He may look friendly, but remember what they say: don't judge a tree by its bark.

British English: In the heart of a beautiful green forest, Whispy Woods is waiting to give Kirby some juicy red apples. Isn't that nice? Well...not really, since he drops them on Kirby's head like bombs. If that wasn't bad enough, he'll also suck up the pink puffball and blast him with air. Note to self: be more wary of trees with faces.

Whispy Woods is a minor character in the anime series, Kirby: Right Back At Ya!. He can be found residing in Dream Land, in the aptly named Whispy Woods Forest. Here, he is capable of speech, and is not inherently hostile to Kirby or his friends, but he does run into a misunderstanding or two with them in some of the episodes. Whispy is primarily responsible for keeping the woods surrounding him healthy, and is often the target of King Dedede, who wants him gone in order to clear the forest and build a country club in its place.

This lively tree is a protector of the forest, and somehow he always ends up in Kirby’s way.
His bark is usually worse than his bite, but he’ll fight back if you step on his roots. And, if you make him really mad, he’ll even toss his apples at you!

Trivia

  • In early games in the Kirby series, the actual entity of Whispy Woods was little more than his face. The tree was just a background element. Kirby also gets hurt when touching Whispy's face/nose in some of these games.
  • Whispy Woods (not counting his relatives) has appeared in a total of 23 Kirby games, 18 of which were as a Boss or Mid-Boss. This ranks Whispy Woods as the second most prevalent boss character after Kracko (not counting King Dedede, who makes appearances as a playable character just as often as a Boss).
    • Whispy has also made an appearance in every single Super Smash Bros. game as a stage hazard.
  • Whispy Woods is typically portrayed as being roughly 9 Kirbies tall, before any other transformations or changes in size are taken into account. Given Kirby's height of eight inches, this would make the tree roughly six feet (or 1.83 meters) tall.
  • Prior to Kirby Super Star, and past that up to Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble, Whispy Woods was depicted without any lower stubs or branches on his sides. From Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land onward, Whispy fairly consistently has two stubs on his sides which resemble arms to an extent, but are completely useless to the tree. They are occasionally missing in spin-offs such as Kirby Mass Attack and Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, however.
