Wapod is a type of enemy debuting in Kirby's Dream Land 3. It resembles a ghostly Waddle Dee, which is brighter than a regular one and possesses a tail-like extension at the bottom instead of feet. It resides in a tall, brown vase, painted with a pattern of red and white triangles near its base.

As soon as Kirby approaches a vase, the Wapod dwelling inside rises up from it, stopping in midair once it reaches a certain altitude, which differs for individual specimens. The Wapod does not move or attack after it has reached its highest point, but both the spirit and the vase it lives in may harm Kirby if he bumps into either. Defeating a Wapod by using any attack or inhaling it immediately causes a new one to materialize from its container. The only way to eliminate it permanently is to destroy the jar, which is likewise vulnerable to any attack and does not respawn until Kirby leaves and re-enters the room, alongside its inhabitant. Wapods yield no abilities.

Game appearances

Kirby's Dream Land 3

Wapod makes its first appearance in this title, first appearing in Stage 2 of Sand Canyon. Wapods in this game are largely a novelty enemy, though they can appear in somewhat large numbers.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Wapods return in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. They appear essentially identical to their Kirby's Dream Land 3 counterparts except for a lack of arms. Some Wapods rise up from their jar to a certain altitude, other Wapods continue to rise indefinitely, forming a slow, constant stream of enemies exiting the vase. Wapod only appears in stages 5 of White Wafers and 1 of Dangerous Dinner.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

While not appearing as a proper enemy in this game, Wapod makes a cameo appearance in Kirby: Triple Deluxe as a Keychain, represented by its sprites in Kirby's Dream Land 3.

Trivia

  • Wapods may be based on the concept of a Genie in a bottle.
  • It is unclear if Wapods are actually related to Waddle Dees (perhaps being ghosts of departed Waddle Dees), or if they are merely an unrelated species that looks similar.
