The main theme of Vegetable Valley, which plays in most stages (Nightmare in Dream Land version).

Vegetable Valley is the first level of Kirby's Adventure and subsequently its remake, Nightmare in Dream Land. In this level, there are four stages, the least of any level in the game. When the game is started, Kirby appears in the Vegetable Valley when he comes from a Warp Star. In this level's cutscene, Kirby is about to be pushed off a tree by a Blade Knight, when he swallows it and gains the Sword Copy Ability. The boss of this level is Whispy Woods and the museum Copy Ability is the Sword ability. The level 1 version of the sub-game Crane Fever can be played in this level in Kirby's Adventure, but is replaced by the sub-game Bomb Rally in Nightmare in Dream Land.

Full Synopsis

Stage 1

File:Vegetable Valley NinDL Stage 1.jpeg
Kirby finds himself at the beginning of Stage 1 (Nightmare in Dream Land).

Section 1: The stage begins in a plains area, with flat terrain leading off to the right. The very first enemy Kirby will encounter is a Waddle Doo, which can be swallowed for the Beam ability. From there, past minor variations in the terrain, Kirby will need to deal with various basic enemies such as Waddle Dees and Bronto Burts. A Sparky can also be found here, if the Spark ability is preferred. A small outcropping emerges along the path, past which, the door to the next section can be accessed once the Hot Head guard is dealt with.

Section 2: The door leads to a rocky area with sloped terrain and a few soft platforms hanging above the path. More enemies appear along the slopes to get in Kirby's way, and there are cavities in the ground where more enemies reside, though these are not a threat. Past a stair-shaped block formation lies a waterfall bridged with a few small blocks. The bottom of the fall serves as the first of many bottomless pits in the game, and as such, falling in will cost Kirby a stock. Past that, down a small slope lies the door to the next section.

Section 3: The door leads to more rocky slopes and soft platforms. Up the hill past more enemies, another waterfall can be found, though this time, it leads to a pool with a bottom, where Kirby can practice swimming. A Maxim Tomato is clearly visible at the bottom of the pool, and getting it will restore any and all damage Kirby had accrued up to this point. From there, it's a stroll downhill past more enemies until the stage exit can be found atop a soft platform.

Stage 2

Kirby rides the Warp Star up the cliffs in Stage 2 (Nightmare in Dream Land).

Section 1: The stage begins in another grassy plain. The path continues to the right past minor bumps and ledges. A Gordo can be seen bouncing back and forth between the ground and a Star Block. destroying the block will cause it to drift off-screen and out of the way. If not here, then soon, Kirby will come to realize that the Gordo cannot be harmed, and is better avoided in manners such as this. Further down the path, past a small number of enemies, Kirby will encounter a Shotzo aimed at him. This enemy is also one that cannot be destroyed, and as such, it is better to take the path below the Shotzo to avoid its fire. A Sir Kibble guards the crevice just past this path, and can provide the Cutter ability should Kirby desire it. After 'freeing' another Gordo, Kirby will find a Warp Star on standby at the right edge of the screen. Touching it will take him flying to the next section.

The Warp Star first bounds along the ground before taking off. Then it bounces along higher cliffs past the hapless enemies before finally landing in a rocky sloped area.

Section 2: After the landing, the path continues to the right up a slope past more enemies. Lying in wait just ahead is a trio of Bronto Burts who, upon spotting the pink puffball, will take off and fly forward in an attempt to get in the way. From there, the slope immediately cuts off into a pit where Kirby must fight a Poppy Bros. Sr., the first Mid-Boss. Defeating and swallowing him yields Kirby the Crash ability, though it may not find too significant a use in this stage. To get out of the pit, Kirby will need to deal with another band of Bronto Burts, acting much the same as the first, and from there, can find the door to the next section in an outlet of a large wall.

Section 3: The door leads to a small cave which continues to the right past a number of minor enemies. From there, it opens up to a pool, which, while not a significant hazard, can illustrate to Kirby the unfortunate fact that he appears to be the only land-dwelling being who can swim, or even survive underwater. This is made clear when a hapless Waddle Dee walks off the edge on the right side, falls into the pool, and sinks in total stillness for a second or two before popping like a balloon. From there, the cave continues to the right and down a slope into a larger passageway. A number of enemies inhabit this area, as well as a Gordo that, this time, cannot be made to go away. At the end of the tunnel, it branches into two separate paths. The lower path leads to a Maxim Tomato sealed away by Star Blocks. Even lacking an ability, Kirby can still get this tomato by inhaling the blocks. The upper path leads to the door to the next section.

Section 4: The door leads to another cave section, this time in the form of a shaft that leads upwards. The shaft itself is divided into separate rooms, the first of which contains a spike pit in the floor and a ladder leading upwards. From there, past another short climb, Kirby will encounter a Sword Knight, who can grant him the Sword ability when swallowed. This particular knight guards the stage exit.

(There is a hidden doorway in Section 4, which leads to a room with a waterfall, a Bronto Burt, and a 1Up.)

Kirby tackles a Bronto Burt using Burning in Stage 3 (Nightmare in Dream Land).

Section 1: The stage begins in another grassy plain, with a Cappy and Shotzo immediately to the right. Another Shotzo lies behind the first, though this one is suspended on a Star Block over a very thin bottomless pit. Removing the Star Block will cause the Shotzo to fall into the pit and out of the way. From there, Kirby can do this to a couple more Shotzos before reaching a steep slope downward with more enemies on it. The door to the next section can be found at the bottom of the hill, guarded by a Kabu.

Section 2: The door leads to a flat rocky area where two Flamers can be found in the air. One is stick inside a quartet of rock blocks, and the other is orbiting around a single block. Swallowing either one will grant Kirby the Burning ability. The path continues to the right, past some rudimentary enemies until several waterfalls can be found pouring into bottomless pits. A number of Bronto Burts wait in these pits to ambush Kirby. After passing the last one, the door to the next section can be found, guarded by a Sparky.

Section 3: The door leads to a stone cave which winds downward past more enemies, including some aquatic ones like the Coner and Glunk. There is a shallow pool at the bottom of the cave shaft which contains a couple more of these creatures. The door to the next section can be found just to the right from here.

Section 4: The door leads to an open flat plain with soft platform decks and many enemies immediately approaching from the right. The path continues past a small slope, leading a a more tight deck structure patrolled by more enemies. A Maxim Tomato can be found on the bottom deck, which Kirby will need to circle around a bit to get. From there, the stage exit can be found, guarded by a Hot Head.

Stage 4

Kirby plows through enemies using an Invincibility Candy in Stage 4 (Nightmare in Dream Land).

Section 1: The stage begins within a deep forest, as Kirby lands on a branch at the bottom of a canopy system. A Sparky patrols the bottom while a Sir Kibble occupies another branch. The path continues up a ladder into the canopy itself. This leads to an enclosed room where Kirby must fight Mr. Frosty. Defeating and swallowing him yields the Freeze ability and opens the door to the next section.

Section 2: The door leads to a section of forest floor with a number of logs and raised platforms sticking out of the ground as the path continues to the right. Many enemies will attempt to get in the way here, but they are no match for the Freeze ability. The door to the next section can be found on a couple of logs at the end of the path.

Section 3: The door leads to the inside of a tree trunk, as the path continues upward along soft platform ledges. Here, a Needlous can be found, and swallowed for the Needle ability. Past more enemies, the door to the next section can be found at the top of the trunk, behind some Star Blocks.

Section 4: The door leads to a bridge of branches spanning to the right. Atop one particular branch is the first Invincibility Candy. Picking it up will cause Kirby to run faster and be immune to all enemy attacks for a brief time. This allows him to plow through many enemies as he traverses the bridge continuing to the right. Along the path, a 1Up can be obtained between two Shotzos. This is not a problem if Kirby is still invincible. The stage exit can be found at the end of the path.

Boss: Whispy Woods

Kirby fights Whispy Woods (Nightmare in Dream Land).

Upon entering the door, Kirby finds himself in a series of branch platforms with holes in them. Dropping down these holes leads to a clearing where Whispy Woods is found. The battle begins immediately.

Whispy Woods can attack Kirby by dropping apples on him or shooting air puffs. He can be beaten if Kirby redirects any apple he throws at him or if Kirby has a Copy Ability and attacks him with that.

Once defeated, Whispy sheds a tear and stops fighting, yielding the Star Rod piece for Kirby to collect.
