"VS. Star Dream" is the name of a musical piece which first plays during the first phase of the battle with Star Dream in Kirby: Planet Robobot. It was composed by Hirokazu Ando.

Composition[edit]

The battle begins.

"VS. Star Dream" is an energetic minor theme consisting of the themes that symbole the opposition between Star Dream and the now deceased President Haltmann, and Halberd Mode Kirby and Meta Knight. It starts with a slow arpeggiated piano intro with gradually fading beeping noises, based on "Vagrant Counting Song of Retrospection". Following the intro and opening of the battle, an original takes off in C minor, consisting of rapid rising scale fragments and descending seconds and thirds in quaver-two semiquavers phrases. The motif modulates through F, F-sharp and B minor, with a rising counterpart, until this peaks at a C major chord. "The Noble Haltmann" comes in F-sharp minor. After it plays out, the unique motif repeats its original structure from D minor, and is once again followed up by "The Noble Haltmann", now in G-sharp minor, nonetheless with hopeful yet dramatic major harmonies. On the other hand, "Havoc Aboard the Halberd" plays in C-sharp minor from Halberd Mode's side, followed by an E minor "Kirby's Triumphant Return", a recurring motif in final boss themes in an unprecedented key. It does not reach its "Green Greens" resolution yet, as "VS. Star Dream"'s main motif interrupts it to remind of the foe at hand. "Green Greens" does, however, come: first as a chiptune counterpoint, then its middle section, both in E minor. After a brief transition, the piece returns to C minor and loops.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

This track utilizes elements from many of the previous themes in Kirby: Planet Robobot. Notably, it incorporates "The Noble Haltmann", "Havoc Aboard the Halberd", and "Green Greens". The track's original motif also makes appearances in the cutscene themes "First Contact" and "Caught Me Singing", as well as in "Fatal Error".

This music can be found as track 091 in the Kirby: Planet Robobot Jukebox.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

The original track accompanies the "Robobot Memories" Celebration Picture, which can be found as Track 149 in the Kirby Star Allies Jukebox as of Version 4.0.0.

A partial remix of both "Vagrant Counting Song of Retrospection" and "VS. Star Dream" plays when P1 fights Morpho Knight as Susie in Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! and Soul Melter (EX) of The Ultimate Choice. This medley is named 幼き日に視たデウス・エクス・マキナ (Deus Ex Machina at a Young Age) in Kirby Star Allies: The Original Soundtrack.

The remix is also arranged by Hirokazu Ando and can be found as Track 183 in the Kirby Star Allies Jukebox as of Version 4.0.0.

Super Kirby Clash[edit]

A remix of "Deus Ex Machina at a Young Age" plays during the Super Party Quest against Pres. Parallel Susie.

Other appearances[edit]

A portion of this track is incorporated into the Kirby 25th Anniversary Orchestra Concert, as part of the Kirby Planet Robobot Medley. It was arranged by Shogo Sakai.

Trivia[edit]

  • This song shares its opening motif with the track Spinning Jungle from Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Composer Hirokazu Ando acknowledged the similarity, and admitted he only realized it after finishing the song, and that was simply a coincidence.[2]

  2. "I originally made "VS. Star Dream" based on information such as "the last boss this time will have the Halberd", and although it's a big song, I was able to finish it well...
However, right after I completed it, I felt that I had heard something like this song somewhere before, and when I went to investigate, I realized that the beginning of this song was similar to the song "Spinning Jungle" from the previous game (Kirby: Triple Deluxe).
Well, there is no problem since that song is also mine, but if anyone is reading too much into it, the answer is "it's just a coincidence that they are similar". (laughs)
