— Pause Menu description

Ultra Sword is a Super Ability that debuted in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, obtained by defeating a Super Blade Knight. Like the regular Sword ability, Kirby gains a floppy green cap with the ability, though with extra designs on the brim and star emblems on the forehead and tip.

Ultra Sword is the most common Super Ability in the game by a fair margin, and is featured on the front box art of Kirby's Return to Dream Land in North America. Ultra Sword is also Kirby's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Ultimate.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land

Kirby obtains this ability in specific areas of the game, by swallowing or otherwise defeating a Super Blade Knight which appears for that specific purpose.

The sword changes each time you swing!

Upon use, Kirby produces a rather large sword or similar cutting implement, which he proceeds to swing in a very large arc across the screen. Like other Super Abilities, the attack defeats any common enemy or mid-boss in one hit, while it also destroys any terrain or obstacle marked with large stars.

The first swing with the ability will produce a more involved cutscene, while swinging with nothing in the target zone will produce no cutscene at all.

Variants of Ultra Sword

Similar to the Stone ability, Kirby's choice of weapon is randomly picked on each swing. Possibilities include:

  • Sword (default)
  • Meat cleaver
  • Cutlass
  • Wooden training sword
  • Fan
  • Galaxia (rare)
  • Fish (very rare)

Usage in Boss Battle

Spoilers! Notice: Stop right there, stubby little pink thing!
Spoilers abound! If you do not wish to read them, skip ahead to the next heading or find a different article.

Ultra Sword is used by Kirby during two boss battles in Main/Extra Mode: Grand Doomer and Magolor. In both cases, the boss in question shields itself when its health gets very low; the shield must be broken with Super Abilities.

Ultra Sword is guaranteed to be the last Super Ability to appear, and is then used to finish off the boss once the shield has broken. If the boss is not defeated with the Ultra Sword once the shield is broken, it will regenerate slightly. When used for the final blow the choice of weapon is not random (the regular sword always appears) and it grows to an even larger size.

However, Magolor isn't totally defeated by Kirby's Ultra Sword during the Main/Extra Mode battle. He revives with the power of Master Crown and becomes Magolor Soul.

When Magolor Soul's stamina is lowered to half and enters his second phase, he also uses the Super Abilities obtained from Master Crown. Notably, he conjures dual giant dark-colored Galaxia as his Ultra Sword attack which cannot be guarded by Kirby.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U

Kirby using the Ultra Sword Final Smash on Falco in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Kirby uses the Ultra Sword as his Final Smash, replacing Cook Kirby from Brawl.

To execute the move, Kirby must first shatter the Smash Ball, then strike an opponent with the sword. If no opponent is in range, the sword strike will miss and the move will fail. The opponent who gets struck will be trapped, as Kirby then slashes several times with the sword from varying directions, finishing off with one last big strike that will send the opponent flying.

Functionally, it is similar to Link's Triforce Slash, but it can catch multiple targets in its wake, and its slashes will hit other opponents much more easily if they venture too close in.

Wii U trophy description

"For Kirby's Final Smash, he swings a sword that's waaay bigger than he is. If the first swing hits, he'll keep going with a combo of lightning-fast slices, dealing tons of damage. For the last swing, the sword grows even larger and launches any victims. Make sure that first swing hits, though, or nothing else will happen!"

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Ultra Sword remains as Kirby's Final Smash.
