The Ultimate Choice is a Boss Endurance Sub-Game present in Kirby Star Allies, where selected characters defeat a series of bosses, similar to The Arena. It is unlocked after completing Story Mode for the first time, along with Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! and Heroes in Another Dimension. It has two major differences compared to The Arena: it records the player's score, and it has nine different levels of difficulty. As such, it can be seen as effectively nine different Arenas rolled into a single game. Completing this mode on the Soul Melter difficulty setting is required for 100% completion. Completing the bonus Soul Melter EX difficulty is not required for 100%, but it is required for Crown%.

Much like its counterparts in previous titles, The Ultimate Choice is a boss endurance mode with rest areas in-between each fight. Bosses and enemy ambushes are encountered in a set order depending on the difficulty chosen. The Ultimate Choice also features a character select screen much like Helper to Hero in Kirby Super Star Ultra, and keeps separate scores for each one. The player can choose between Kirby and most of his Copy Abilities, any of the recruitable allies, or any of the currently available Dream Friends to play as. CPU or human-controlled allies can also join the player for a team of up to four, with their individual damage output reduced to prevent bosses from going down too quickly.

A high score is kept for this mode, with generally higher scores being awarded for higher difficulties.
The Ultimate Choice is split up into nine difficulty levels. The way it works is very similar to the Intensity Meter concept present in Kid Icarus: Uprising, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate; the player can pick any difficulty from the available selection, with greater rewards given out for higher difficulties. Only the first five are available at first, with the other four unlocked after meeting certain criteria. A high score is kept for this mode; harder difficulties give more points than the lower ones.

Then, 1P chooses a Copy Ability for Kirby (or press X or the up circle bottom when the Joy-Con is held sideways to choose the Friend Helper of that ability), and (if desired) chooses up to 3 Friend Helpers to accompany 1P's character through the whole run. After completing The Ultimate Choice once, Dream Friends are available for any player to choose from, along with regular helpers and Kirby for 1P only.
Then, player 1 chooses a Copy Ability for Kirby or the friend that corresponds with said ability, and (if desired) chooses up to three additional friends to accompany player 1's character through the whole run. If more than one person is playing, additional players select their own characters independently, though only player 1 can play as Kirby. After completing The Ultimate Choice once, new character options open up: Dream Friends for every player and Normal Kirby for player 1 only.

After character select, 1P chooses the difficulty level. Most bosses have a fixed health regardless of difficulty.

During boss battles, 2P, 3P 4P, and  CPUs (if any) cannot be permanently defeated, Unfriended, or swallowed for their ability (if any). Fainted allies who are still in the stage will revive with minimal health if left unconscious at the end of a battle (or if thrown off the stage while the boss is shifting phases). If fainted allies are not revived in time and disappear midbattle, they will revive with half health in the rest area. In a multiplayer run, if 1P is KO'd, other players can revive 1P before the given time runs out; otherwise, the game is over when 1P is done in.

In-between battles, characters can use a limited supply of food for healing if needed, and can also pick up Picture Pieces from chests. On higher difficulties, more pieces can be collected, but there will be less food for healing. Before the final round, an additional food item can be found inside the last chest.

Difficulty
Difficulty
The base game has 8 difficulty levels: the first five available at start and the last three unlockable. Difficulty levels are represented visually using a plate of Superspicy Curry at varying levels of spiciness.
As of Version 4.0.0, the game has nine difficulty levels, with the first five being available at start and the last four being unlockable. Difficulty levels are represented visually with Kirby adding hot sauce to a plate of Superspicy Curry; the higher the difficulty, the more hot sauce is added. Kirby's expression also changes, from happy to tense to shocked. When Infernal Crisis is selected, he takes on the same shocked expression as when selecting Super Hard difficulty in both versions of Kirby's Star Stacker; when Soul Melter is selected, he takes on the appearance of Devil Kirby from the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! episode Frog Wild.

Version 4.0.0 adds Soul Melter EX, which is unlocked by clearing both Soul Melter and Heroes in Another Dimension. To select Soul Melter EX, the player should select Soul Melter and press ↑, A, and - together (the same command for Kirby's Dream Land - Extra Game). Soul Melter EX incorporates the bosses from Heroes in Another Dimension. Completing Soul Melter EX unlocks the Dream Button which the player can switch Kirby's look between the starting current modern look or the classic look in the game Kirby first appeared in.

To select Soul Melter EX, the player should select Soul Melter and press ↑, A, and - together (the same command for Kirby's Dream Lands Extra Game). When Soul Melter EX is selected, Kirby gains a "blank" face that stares directly at the player, similar to Void Termina's final core. He also adds four bottles of hot sauce to the curry instead of one.

The Ultimate Choice's icon from the main menu turns red when Fiery Showdown and Infernal Crisis are unlocked, and then turns dark red when Soul Melter is unlocked.
The title screen logo changes in color as higher difficulties are cleared. It initially appears orange, then red once Fiery Showdown and Infernal Crisis are unlocked, then black once Soul Melter is unlocked. This also affects its logo on the Select Mode menu.

In each difficulty mode, a score is kept. This score is based on the defeated boss phases (score varies in difficulty) and time bonuses (how quickly Kirby and his allies defeat bosses). The score decreases by 1000 every time 1P is KO'd in the multiplayer mode, however.

In Soul Melter and Soul Melter EX, Morpho Knight's theme will be replaced by new music arrangements when player 1 is a Dream Friend that has completed Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! at least once. The background of The Divine Terminus will always change depending on which Dream Friend is used in Soul Melter.
In Soul Melter EX, the rest area music changes between boss fights, starting with Francisca and continuing up to Void Termina. The songs are taken from previous Kirby games, most of which were used in climactic situations or boss fights. While this confused the game's composers, director Shinya Kumazaki stated that the music is supposed to keep the player "in a trance-like state" where they can't rest between battles.

The following are small changes made to the game in newer versions:
4.0.0
4.0.0
*The timer has slightly changed. Now it doesn't run when the boss hasn't entered the battle, e.g. when King Dedede is eating, and when Meta Knight is on the cliff.
*For each battle, the timer doesn't start ticking until the given boss can start being attacked in battle. In prior versions, the timer doesn't stop until the given boss is defeated.
*Void Soul's attack order has changed.

Trivia
Trivia
*On the title screen, red chilli peppers are falling down in the background. On occasion, a green chilli pepper may fall down as well.
*Red chili peppers fall down in the background of the title screen. On occasion, a green (or gold on very rare occasions) chili pepper may fall down as well.
*The difficulty scale used in this game is similar to the Intensity meters present in Kid Icarus: Uprising and Classic Mode in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
*The idea of making the mode curry-themed came to Shinya Kumazaki when he saw a curry store where one could choose the level of spiciness they'd like.
*The face Kirby makes when Soul Melter is selected is a reference to Devil Kirby from Kirby: Right Back at Ya! Episode 95: "Devil Kirby" (JP) / "Frog Wild" (EN), which he becomes after being possessed by a monster called the Devil Frog.
*Nintendo Switch Kirby Star Allies Channel Article #22 mentions that the score can reach 700,000 points if Soul Melter EX is cleared fast enough. To reach a score of 700,000, Soul Melter EX has to be cleared under 20:55.40 and when playing in multiplayer, P1 must not be KO'd and revived. Meanwhile, it's impossible to reach 710,000 because that requires Soul Melter EX to be cleared under 04:15.40, which is not known to be currently possible. The highest theoretical score, if every boss was defeated in under one second, would be 712,554.
*The face Kirby makes when Soul Melter EX is selected is similar to that of Void Termina's Final Core / Void Soul. He also adds four bottles of hot sauce instead of one.
*An unused file of the "Helper's Rest" theme from Kirby Super Star Ultra is included among the files for Soul Melter EX's rest area themes, suggesting it was a potential candidate before the final line-up was decided.
**It also resembles a numb expression, meaning Kirby is stunned by the difficulty.
*Several aspects of Soul Melter EX reference previous titles in the Kirby series:
*Nintendo Switch Kirby Star Allies Channel Article #22 mentions that the score can reach 700,000 if Soul Melter EX is cleared fast enough. To reach 700,000, Soul Melter EX has to be cleared under 20:55.40. Meanwhile, it's impossible to reach 710,000 because that requires Soul Melter EX to be cleared under 04:15.40.
**The screen displayed when unlocking Soul Melter EX references the screen displayed when unlocking Extra Game in Kirby's Dream Land; in addition to using the same command, the screen shows King Dedede's shocked expression and points out the buttons used to input the command on the controller, just like said screen. The title of the dialogue box is "♥Good Job!" (or, in Japanese,「♥クリア おめでとう!」"You cleared it, congratulations!"), which is the same title on that screen in Kirby's Dream Land (though without the heart in the English version's case).
**In the Japanese version, when starting Soul Melter EX, the dialogue box displays:「… 後悔しますよ。」("orange you'll regret this.") This is a reference to the recurring dialogue prompt that displays when attempting to delete a save file in many Kirby and Super Smash Bros. games,「red」("red", or more literally "red"). It is somewhat missed in the English localization, which translates「後悔しますよ。」as "No regrets!" and「red」as "Are you red sure?"
**In the Japanese version, the button to press when starting Soul Melter EX reads「…がんばる!!」("Good luck!" in the English version of the game, with a more direct translation being "try your hardest!") instead of the usual「スタート」("Start"). This is an apparent reference to the 0² battle in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards changing the「でなおす」("Try Again") button in the pause screen to read「がんばる」("Tough It Out!" in the English version of Kirby 64).

A new festival of battle is about to begin! Test your limits with…The Ultimate Choice! Kirby and friends will face off against a gaggle of super-spicy bosses in their unending quest to gobble up everything in sight!
— Kirby Star Allies pause screen description

Gameplay[edit]

The Ultimate Choice is split up into nine difficulty levels. The way it works is very similar to the Intensity Meter concept present in Kid Icarus: Uprising, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate; the player can pick any difficulty from the available selection, with greater rewards given out for higher difficulties. Only the first five are available at first, with the other four unlocked after meeting certain criteria. A high score is kept for this mode; harder difficulties give more points than the lower ones.

Before starting the game, the player must choose how many human players will play:

  • 1 human player is in the Solo Rank category;
  • 2-4 human players are in the With Friends Rank category.

The more players in play (including CPU), the less damage they will deal to mid-bosses and bosses. The Ultimate Choice has a different set of multiplayer modifiers from main modes (Story Mode, Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!, and Heroes in Another Dimension).

Attack Modifiers
Number of Players The Ultimate Choice Main Modes
1 ×1.0 ×1.0
2 ×0.875 ×0.75
3 ×0.8 ×0.6
4 ×0.75 ×0.5

Then, player 1 chooses a Copy Ability for Kirby or the friend that corresponds with said ability, and (if desired) chooses up to three additional friends to accompany player 1's character through the whole run. If more than one person is playing, additional players select their own characters independently, though only player 1 can play as Kirby. After completing The Ultimate Choice once, new character options open up: Dream Friends for every player and Normal Kirby for player 1 only.

After character select, player 1 chooses the difficulty level. Most bosses have fixed health regardless of difficulty. Once the difficulty is confirmed, the battles begin.

During boss battles, any players or CPUs besides player 1 cannot be permanently defeated, unfriended, or swallowed for their ability (if any). Fainted allies who are still in the stage will revive with minimal health if left unconscious at the end of a battle (or if thrown off the stage during certain phase transitions in certain battles). If fainted allies are not revived in time and disappear mid-battle, they will revive with half health in the rest area. In a multiplayer run, if player 1 is KO'd, other players must revive player 1 before the given time runs out; otherwise, the game is over when player 1 is done in.

In-between battles, characters can use a limited supply of food for healing if needed, and can also pick up Picture Pieces from chests. On higher difficulties, more pieces can be collected, but there will be less food for healing. Before the final round, an additional food item can be found inside the last chest.

amiibo can be used to obtain extra food in this mode (up to 7 times in a single playthrough), but doing so will mark the score as having been achieved using amiibo. Characters who have completed the sub-game are crowned on the character select menu (yellow crown for Difficulty 1-7; red crown for Soul Melter; green crown for Soul Melter EX). If every character has completed the sub-game (regardless of difficulty), a special message will pop up to congratulate the achievement.

Difficulty[edit]

To select Soul Melter EX, the player should select Soul Melter and press ↑, A, and - together (the same command for Kirby's Dream Land's Extra Game). When Soul Melter EX is selected, Kirby gains a "blank" face that stares directly at the player, similar to Void Termina's final core. He also adds four bottles of hot sauce to the curry instead of one.

Soul Melter EX incorporates the bosses from Heroes in Another Dimension. Completing Soul Melter EX unlocks the Dream Button, which can switch Kirby's look between the current modern look or the classic look from Kirby's Dream Land.

The following lists every difficulty in The Ultimate Choice, with information on the boss battles, how many healing items are given, and other factors:

The title screen logo changes in color as higher difficulties are cleared. It initially appears orange, then red once Fiery Showdown and Infernal Crisis are unlocked, then black once Soul Melter is unlocked. This also affects its logo on the Select Mode menu.

Player Health[edit]

The maximum health of all players varies between difficulty levels:

  • 1-4 (Sweet Breeze - Spicy Adventure): 100%
  • 5-7 (Sizzling Threat - Infernal Crisis): 80%
  • Secret (Soul Melter): 70%
  • Secret (Soul Melter EX): 100%

Friends have the same power as Kirby's respective Copy Abilities. In addition, they usually have better jumping/hovering ability than Kirby's hover. However, most of them have lower health than Kirby.

4 40 (1-4 & EX), 32 (5-7), 28 (Secret)
5 30 (1-4 & EX), 24 (5-7), 21 (Secret)
* indicates Dream Friends.

Chef Kawasaki is the only playable mid-boss who has lower health than Kirby. Interestingly, enemy Chef Kawasaki and Mr. Frosty have lower health than the remaining mid-bosses, too.

Scoring[edit]

In each difficulty mode, a score is kept. This score is based on the defeated boss phases (score varies in difficulty) and time bonuses (how quickly Kirby and his allies defeat bosses). The score decreases by 1000 every time player 1 is KO'd in the multiplayer mode, however.

The lowest attainable score is 11,500 points on Sweet Breeze difficulty in multiplayer mode: 1,500 from defeating Meta Knight's second phase and 10,000 from the Sweet Breeze Clear Bonus; player 1 has to be KO'd multiple times until the score is depleted to zero before defeating Meta Knight's first phase; at least 5 minutes must be spent before finishing off Meta Knight so that the time bonus runs out.

Time Bonus[edit]

Time bonus = base value1 - (defeat time2 × 10)

1 The base value is 3000, except for the following bosses:

  • Void Termina (Infernal Crisis) - 5000
  • Void Termina & Void Soul (Soul Melter) - 7000
  • Void Termina, True Destroyer of Worlds & Void (Soul Melter EX) - 70000

2 Unit: second; rounded down to one decimal place.

For most bosses, the boss defeated points are awarded before the time bonus points are. However, whenever King Dedede and Parallel Dedede are defeated, the time bonus points are awarded first before the boss defeated points are.

Differences from Main Modes[edit]

  • If a specific copy ability is selected for Kirby to use at the start of the game, he will be locked into that ability, and be unable to lose it for the duration of the game. This does not apply if Normal Kirby is chosen.
    • Because of this, Hammer Kirby can use Hammer Throw infinitely without losing the ability, and Artist Kirby cannot use Painbrush, unless Normal Kirby gains either ability by inhaling the respective Bonkers or Vividria mid-bosses.
    • The Cook, Crash, Festival, Mike and Sleep abilities are unavailable for Kirby to choose on the menu, and subsequently Chef Kawasaki is the only playable character of the Cook ability. Normal Kirby can still obtain the Festival ability from Yggy Woods' golden cherries, and the Cook ability from the Chef Kawasaki mid-boss.
  • Normal Kirby's Blaster Bullet (a Star Bullet formed by inhaling at least 2 objects) does increased damage in Soul Melter EX (and Heroes in Another Dimension) compared to regular modes and the other difficulties in The Ultimate Choice.
  • To prevent overuse, in the rest area, Chef Kawasaki's Cook Pot / Souper Supper, Artist's Still Life / Adeleine & Ribbon's Al Fresco, and The Three Mage-Sisters' Sister Circle do nothing, and their cooldown timer freezes.
    • Chef Kawasaki's cooldown time is increased from 60 seconds in main modes to 150 seconds in The Ultimate Choice.
    • The Three Mage-Sisters' Sister Circle does more damage with more allies (in other modes, it does fixed damage regardless of the number of allies).
  • Bosses in The Ultimate Choice have roughly 75% health compared to their appearances in Story Mode, Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! and Heroes in Another Dimension.
  • Grand Mam is not fought in any difficulty. This is due to the fact that Grand Mam must be defeated with at least two Copy Abilities: Fire and a slash-property ability (e.g. Cutter, Ninja, Sword).
  • The Star Allies Sparkler can be piloted by any number of players.
  • Soul Melter's variation of Void Termina is a more difficult version than the main game, and has a unique final form. Soul Melter EX includes a still more difficult version of Void Termina with its own final form, and unique fights against harder versions of the individual Mage-Sisters and Goldon & Silvox, each with new pause screen descriptions. Soul Melter EX is also the only place Morpho Knight EX can be fought besides Guest Star The Three-Mage Sisters: From Prayers to Hope.

Music[edit]

Title track[edit]

The title track of The Ultimate Choice is composed by Yuuta Ogasawara and titled お好み究極チョイス味[1] (Choosing the Ultimate Choice Flavor). It can be found and listened to as Track 198 in the Jukebox.

This track is a remix of "Green Greens" in a heavy metal and oriental fashion, to express the theme of spiciness (the difficulty levels).

Legacy tracks[edit]

Several classic tunes from previous Kirby games appear in The Ultimate Choice. Many of them only appear in Soul Melter and Soul Melter EX, and some are exclusive to Soul Melter EX.

Mid-Boss Ambush Type A 199 VS Waddle Tank Kirby's Return to Dream Land Scope Shot: Stage 1
Kirby's Return to Dream Land remix of Kirby Super Star's regular boss battle theme.
This could be a reference to how the other games with legacy tracks for the ambushes follow Kirby Super Star's style, and how "VS Waddle Tank" is a remix of Kirby Super Star's boss theme.
Mid-Boss Ambush Type B 200 Blazing! Boss Battle Kirby's Return to Dream Land Regular boss battle theme.

Decisive Battle With a Mighty Boss
Kirby's Blowout Blast VS. Giant King Dedede. This could be a reference to how Goldon & Silvox fight similarly to Lololo & Lalala, and how the track is a remix of the Castle Lololo theme.
Kracko 206 すくえキングダム!しれんクエスト[1]
Save the Kingdom! Ordeal
Team Kirby Clash Deluxe Ordeal theme, orchestral version for the Kracko, Whispy Woods and Pyribbit Ordeals.
This could be a reference to how Kracko is the first ordeal boss in Team Kirby Clash Deluxe.
This is the only Soul Melter track to not reappear in Soul Melter EX, as Kracko to Twin Kracko is replaced by Parallel Twin Kracko to Parallel Big Kracko.
Twin Kracko
Parallel Twin Kracko
207 このせかいをすくえ!しれんクエスト[1]
Save this World! Ordeal
Team Kirby Clash Deluxe Ordeal theme, electronic version for the Tougher Whispy Woods, Pyribbit and Kracko quests.
The Ordeal theme "upgrades" from the orchestral version of the song to the rock version when Kracko turns into Twin Kracko.
This could also be a reference to Kracko being one of the last bosses to be fought in the Empyrean before the Decisive Battlefield is unlocked, and how Twin Kracko, in every difficulty except for Sizzling Threat, ends the first phase of bosses in that difficulty level before transitioning to the next phase.

Main article: Morpho Knight#Dream Friend music change

In Soul Melter and Soul Melter EX, Morpho Knight's theme will be replaced by new music arrangements when player 1 is a Dream Friend that has completed Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! at least once. The background of The Divine Terminus will always change depending on which Dream Friend is used in Soul Melter.

In Soul Melter EX, the rest area music changes between boss fights, starting with Francisca and continuing up to Void Termina. The songs are taken from previous Kirby games, most of which were used in climactic situations or boss fights. While this confused the game's composers, director Shinya Kumazaki stated that the music is supposed to keep the player "in a trance-like state" where they can't rest between battles.[2]

Version changelog[edit]

The following are small changes made to the game in newer versions:

4.0.0[edit]

  • For each battle, the timer doesn't start ticking until the given boss can start being attacked in battle. In prior versions, the timer doesn't stop until the given boss is defeated.
  • Void Soul's attack order has changed.

Trivia[edit]

  • Red chili peppers fall down in the background of the title screen. On occasion, a green (or gold on very rare occasions) chili pepper may fall down as well.
  • The idea of making the mode curry-themed came to Shinya Kumazaki when he saw a curry store where one could choose the level of spiciness they'd like.[3]
  • Nintendo Switch Kirby Star Allies Channel Article #22 mentions that the score can reach 700,000 points if Soul Melter EX is cleared fast enough.
  • An unused file of the "Helper's Rest" theme from Kirby Super Star Ultra is included among the files for Soul Melter EX's rest area themes, suggesting it was a potential candidate before the final line-up was decided.
  • Several aspects of Soul Melter EX reference previous titles in the Kirby series:
    • The screen displayed when unlocking Soul Melter EX references the screen displayed when unlocking Extra Game in Kirby's Dream Land; in addition to using the same command, the screen shows King Dedede's shocked expression and points out the buttons used to input the command on the controller, just like said screen. The title of the dialogue box is "♥Good Job!" (or, in Japanese,「♥クリア おめでとう!」"You cleared it, congratulations!"), which is the same title on that screen in Kirby's Dream Land (though without the heart in the English version's case).
    • In the Japanese version, when starting Soul Melter EX, the dialogue box displays:「たましいからさ EX後悔こうかいしますよ。」("Soul Melter EX... you'll regret this.") This is a reference to the recurring dialogue prompt that displays when attempting to delete a save file in many Kirby and Super Smash Bros. games,「こうかいしませんね?」("You're sure you won't regret this?", or more literally "No regrets, right?"). It is somewhat missed in the English localization, which translates「後悔こうかいしますよ。」as "No regrets!" and「こうかいしませんね?」as "Are you REALLY sure?"
    • In the Japanese version, the button to press when starting Soul Melter EX reads「…がんばる!!」("Good luck!" in the English version of the game, with a more direct translation being "try your hardest!") instead of the usual「スタート」("Start"). This is an apparent reference to the battle in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards changing the「でなおす」("Try Again") button in the pause screen to read「がんばる」("Tough It Out!" in the English version of Kirby 64).
