Sword is a Copy Ability which grants Kirby a blade to wield against his foes. First appearing in Kirby's Adventure, this is one of Kirby's oldest and most essential abilities, and has since become one of the most ubiquitous and recognizable Copy Abilities in the series - often being among the first (if not the very first) seen. When utilizing it, Kirby adopts a green hat with a yellow brim and a pompon at its tip, which grants him a look similar to that of Link from the Legend of Zelda series. The most common way to obtain the Sword ability is by inhaling Sword Knight, Blade Knight, or, in some games, Heavy Knight. Sword is also notable for being one of the abilities that can be used underwater, making it very versatile. In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, there is a super version of this ability called Ultra Sword.

A recurring character, the sword-wielding Meta Knight, is prone to challenge Kirby to duels throughout the series. Prior to these battles, Meta Knight commonly throws Kirby a sword, which he can use to get the Sword ability as well. In most cases, Meta Knight refuses to battle Kirby if he is not equipped with this ability.

Game Appearances

Kirby's Adventure/Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land

The Sword ability was first introduced in Kirby's Adventure, where Kirby could copy the abilities of his foes for the first time. When sporting this ability, Kirby's sprite doesn't change, but he can be seen holding a sword. The sword can be swung by pressing the B Button, allowing the unknown reader to use two different attacks. If the unknown reader uses the sword while standing on the ground, Kirby swings the blade in front of him, while he performs a cutting somersault when in mid-air or underwater. The Sword ability is also essential for the boss battle against Meta Knight in Orange Ocean.

Sword reappears in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, where it retains the same functions as in the original game. Due to the graphic update, Kirby also adopts his green cap when getting this ability.

Kirby's Dream Land 2

A special weapon called the Rainbow Sword appears in Kirby's Dream Land 2 and plays an important role. Being composed of all the Rainbow Drops in the game, Kirby wields this weapon in the final battle against Dark Matter. When swung, it can be used to harm the final boss and to deflect his energy beams.

Kirby Super Star/Kirby Super Star Ultra

Sword reappears as one of Kirby's regular copy abilities in Kirby Super Star and its remake Kirby Super Star Ultra. Since this game introduced the concept of Kirby wearing different hats after copying an opponent, this game is the first to show him with the signature green cap. Aside from the updated sprite, Kirby also has access to a whole pool of new sword techniques, which can be used to defeat foes more efficiently. When carrying a Sword, Kirby can also summon a Blade Knight and use him as a Helper in battle.

Additionally, in Meta Knightmare Ultra, Meta Knight can summon a Blade Knight (and sometimes, a Sword Knight) as his Helper.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

The flame sword.

While the regular Sword ability is absent from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Kirby can create a similar ability by combining the two Special Powers Burn and Cutter. The result of this is the ability Fire-Cutter which provides a flame sword and can be swung at the enemies, albeit this technique is significantly slower than the Sword ability in other games. Another way to create a Sword substitute is to combine Spark and Cutter, which gives Kirby a laser sword.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror

The Sword ability returns in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror in its usual function. Its moveset in this game is similar to Kirby's Adventure and Kirby's Nightmare in Dream Land. Additionally, Kirby can now chain his sword slashes together, which makes him able to attack very rapidly. Kirby is now also able to use Final Cutter against enemies, a technique which is usually exclusive to the Cutter ability. A more powerful version of the Sword ability is also featured in this game, called Master. Kirby obtains this special ability in the final boss battle, after picking up Meta Knight's sword.

Curiously, Kirby is depicted with the Sword ability on the boxart of Kirby & The Amazing Mirror.

Kirby Squeak Squad

Sword makes another appearance in the game Kirby Squeak Squad, using the same move-set as Kirby & The Amazing Mirror. After obtaining the appropriate Ability Scroll, Kirby can infuse his sword with ice, fire, or lightning by combining its bubble with the appropriate elemental ability. While this does not change the move-set, it adds additional power to Kirby's sword swipes, and allows him to affect enemies and the environment in a similar manner to the element it is infused with. Notably, none of these elements can be used underwater, causing Kirby's sword to revert to normal while submerged.

Sword makes another appearance in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, with its usual functions and abilities. In addition, an super form of this ability has appeared, called the Ultra Sword, found in some stages, obtained when Kirby swallows a Super Blade Knight.

Meta Knight's moveset as a playable have several similarities to the Sword ability.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

Sword makes a reappearance in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Like most of the returning copy abilities, it is mostly unchanged since its appearance in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

Starting here, Kirby gains an attack called 'Sky Energy Strike', which causes his sword to gain a projectile when raised in the air. This is a direct reference to the Skyward Strike from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

Sword returns in this installment, and can be combined with the Robobot Armor for new functionality. In addition, Kirby can obtain this ability if the unknown reader scans various amiibo of swordfighters (most notably Link). There is also a special Meta Knight variant of the ability that Kirby can use if the series Meta Knight amiibo is scanned in.

In addition, Sword regains a move called 'Hat Thrust' which causes Kirby to thrust his sword downward as he gently falls to the ground. This was last seen in Kirby Super Star Ultra.

Kirby: Battle Royale

Sword is one of the abilities available in this title, and is the one most prominently featured. With the Sword ability, Kirby can move smoothly through the battlefield and hit opponent Kirbys all around him with his Spin Slash. The Drill Stab move can also be performed both on the ground and in the air, though it doesn't travel as far in the air.

There are a number of different costumes for the Sword ability as well. Scanning the Kirby series Kirby amiibo grants a costume that represents the Ultra Sword ability.

Super Smash Bros. series

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Sword Kirby makes an appearance as a collectible trophy.

Wii U trophy description

"That green cap sure does make Kirby look heroic, doesn't it? Maybe wearing it just inspires Kirby, but while he's wearing it, he gets all kinds of neat moves, like Spin Slash, Multisword Attack, and Sword Dive. He's even able to pull off these moves in the air, on the ground, or underwater!"

Appearance in Kirby: Right Back at Ya!

It has been requested that this article or section be rewritten for the following reason(s):
too long and convoluted

The Sword ability is one of the Copy Abilities to make an appearance in the anime Kirby: Right Back at Ya!. The protagonist Kirby transforms into Sword Kirby whenever he inhales a sword, or something shaped like a sword. It is a frequently recurring ability, appearing in six of the 100 episodes. With the transformation comes a small sword with a golden blade and a blue handle, and the signature green hat with yellow brim and pompon. Sword Kirby is able to wield his blade with ease, as opposed to his regular form which seems to struggle more when holding a sword. Sword Kirby can perform basic sword play, as well as use advanced techniques like Sword Spin. He can also vary the length of the sword's blade at will. Kirby's most powerful sword technique seems to be the Sword Beam, a technique which launches a blast of concentrated energy from the sword which can slice most things even from a distance. It is explained by Meta Knight that the Sword Beam can only be used by those who have achieved the state of no mind, a condition in which a warrior only acts on instinct.

A very special variant of the Sword ability is shown whenever Kirby inhales Meta Knight's sword, Galaxia. While Sword Kirby is usually shown wielding his personal golden sword regardless what kind of sword he actually inhaled, Galaxia replaces his sword when he obtains the Sword ability from it. When wielding Galaxia, Sword Kirby appears much stronger than usual, and his Sword Beam changes its colors from pure white to golden-greenish.

Role in the series

Sword Kirby appears for the first time in the third episode, Kirby's Duel Role, which revolves around a duel between Kirby and Meta Knight. During the fight, Kirby is shown wielding a sword in his regular form, which takes him some effort. After King Dedede summons a sword-carrying Monster called Bugzzy, Kirby transforms into Sword Kirby for the first time by inhaling Bugzzy's sword. As Sword Kirby, he is finally able to achieve the state of no mind and thereby unlock the Sword Beam technique by falling asleep. Before Bugzzy can crush him, Kirby awakes and unleashes the Sword Beam at Bugzzy, which slices him in half.

The sword ability reappears in the next episode, Dark and Stormy Knight. During a fierce battle with Kracko, Kirby manages to inhale a sword-shaped lightning bolt which triggers the transformation into Sword Kirby. By mastering the Sword Beam he learned in the prior episode, Kirby can defeat Kracko as well.

The next appearance of Sword Kirby takes place in A Princess in Dis-Dress. Kirby transforms by inhaling a sword, which was prior brought and used by King Dedede, in order to help his new friend Vee with battling the Monster Susshi. Together they can cut off the demon's tail and defeat it.

The next appearance of Sword Kirby in Sword and Blade, Loyal and True is also the first instance to show Kirby wielding Meta Knight's Sword Galaxia. He takes it from the unconscious Meta Knight in order to aid Sword Knight and Blade Knight in their fight with WolfWrath, at first without transforming. He eventually does inhale Galaxia during the heated battle, thus allowing him to transform. Then, after WolfWrath was weakened by Sword Knight and Blade Knight, Kirby uses his Sword Beam to defeat the creature.

The next episode to feature Sword Kirby, Crusade for the Blade, shows Kirby with both his regular sword and Galaxia. He first transforms by inhaling Sword Knight's sword after he and Blade Knight are defeated by Kirisakin. The Monster puts up a fight with Sword Kirby, in which it manages to break Kirby's sword. After that Sirica, who has been an enemy up to that point, throws Galaxia to him to enable him to defeat Kirisakin. Kirby then uses an enhanced Sword Beam to slice the creature in half.

Sword Kirby finally makes his last appearance in the episode Teacher's Threat during the fight against the Deamon Beast Nekketsu. He obtains the ability by inhaling the creature's Shinai. After a short fight Kirby unleashes a Sword Beam at Nekketsu, which he blocks with his own weapon. This marks the first instance in the show where a Monster is able to successfully block one of Kirby's Sword Beams. However, Kirby quickly uses a second Sword Beam, this time being upside-down, which finally cuts Nekketsu in half.
