Sword is a Copy Ability which grants Kirby a blade to wield against his foes. First appearing in Kirby's Adventure, this is one of Kirby's oldest and most essential abilities, and has since become one of the most ubiquitous and recognizable Copy Abilities in the series - often being among the first (if not the very first) seen. When utilizing it, Kirby adopts a green hat with a yellow brim and a pompom at its tip, which grants him a look similar to that of Link from the The Legend of Zelda series. The most common way to obtain the Sword ability is by inhaling Sword Knight, Blade Knight, or the Mid-Boss Gigant Edge. Sword is also notable for being one of the abilities that can be used underwater, making it very versatile. In Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, there is a super version of this ability called Ultra Sword.

A recurring character, the sword-wielding Meta Knight, is prone to challenge Kirby to duels throughout the series. Prior to these battles, Meta Knight commonly throws Kirby a sword, which he can use to get the Sword ability as well. In most cases, Meta Knight refuses to battle Kirby if he is not equipped with this ability.

The Sword ability was first introduced in Kirby's Adventure, where Kirby could copy the abilities of his foes for the first time. When sporting this ability, Kirby's sprite doesn't change, but he can be seen holding a sword. The sword can be swung by pressing the B Button, allowing Kirby to use two different attacks. If Kirby uses the sword while standing on the ground, he swings the blade in front of him, while he performs a cutting somersault when in midair or underwater. The Sword ability is also essential for the boss battle against Meta Knight in Orange Ocean.

Game Appearances
Sword reappears in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, where it retains the same functions as in the original game. Due to the graphical updates, Kirby also adopts his green cap when getting this ability.

Sword reappears as one of Kirby's regular copy abilities in Kirby Super Star and its remake Kirby Super Star Ultra. Since this game introduced the concept of Kirby wearing different hats after copying an opponent, this game is the first to show him with the signature green cap. Aside from the updated sprite, Kirby also has access to a whole pool of new sword techniques, which can be used to defeat foes more efficiently. When carrying a Sword, Kirby can also summon a Blade Knight and use him as a Helper in battle.

Sword appears as an ability in this spin-off racing title. When acquired from Sword Knight, Kirby gains his familiar green hat and a sword with which he uses to swipe automatically at any enemies or opponents in his path. The ability lasts for only a short time before disappearing. Kirby uses the Sword ability in the opening cut-scene to defeat two Sword Knights in cinematic fashion before facing off against Meta Knight.

The Sword ability returns in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror in its usual function. Its move-set in this game is similar to Kirby's Adventure and Kirby's Nightmare in Dream Land. Additionally, Kirby can now chain his sword slashes together, which makes him able to attack very rapidly. Kirby is now also able to use Final Cutter against enemies, a technique which is usually exclusive to the Cutter ability. A more powerful version of the Sword ability is also featured in this game, called Master. Kirby obtains this special ability in the final boss battle, after picking up Meta Knight's sword.

Sword makes another appearance in the game Kirby: Squeak Squad, using the same move-set as Kirby & The Amazing Mirror. After obtaining the appropriate Ability Scroll, Kirby can infuse his sword with ice, fire, or lightning by combining its bubble with the appropriate elemental ability. While this does not change the move-set, it adds additional power to Kirby's sword swipes, and allows him to affect enemies and the environment in a similar manner to the element it is infused with. Notably, none of these elements can be used underwater, causing Kirby's sword to revert to normal while submerged.

Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition
Sword is one of the abilities that can be used in the sub-game New Challenge Stages. It has the exact same function and look as it does in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Sword makes a reappearance in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Like most of the returning copy abilities, it is mostly unchanged since its appearance in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, though it has a few new tricks. Starting here, Kirby gains the "Sky Energy Sword" attack, which allows him to fire a Sword Beam at any level of health after raising his sword in the air for a short time. This is a direct reference to the Skyward Strike from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

In addition, Sword gains "Twister Slash", which allows Kirby to rise while using Spin Slash, and "Hat Thrust", which causes Kirby to thrust his sword downward as he gently falls to the ground. This move is very similar to the old version of Down Thrust seen in Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra.

Sword is also available as one of the abilities in Kirby Fighters.

Sword is one of the abilities that can be used in the sub-game New Challenge Stages. It has the exact same function and look as it does in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.
Sword is one of the selectable abilities in Kirby Fighters Deluxe, functioning exactly the same as it did in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, though its underwater abilities are removed due to there being no water in this game. Its unlockable Rare Outfit is based on Blade Knight's appearance.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Sword makes a reappearance in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Like most of the returning copy abilities, it is mostly unchanged since its appearance in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

Starting here, Kirby gains an attack called 'Sky Energy Strike', which causes his sword to gain a projectile when raised in the air. This is a direct reference to the Skyward Strike from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

Sword returns in this installment, and can be combined with the Robobot Armor for new functionality. In addition, Kirby can obtain this ability if the player scans various amiibo of swordfighters (most notably Link). There is also a special Meta Knight variant of the ability that Kirby can use if the series Meta Knight amiibo is scanned in.

In addition, Sword regains a move called 'Hat Thrust' which causes Kirby to thrust his sword downward as he gently falls to the ground. This was last seen in Kirby Super Star Ultra.

Sword is one of the abilities available in this title, and is the one most prominently featured. With the Sword ability, Kirby can move smoothly through the battlefield and hit opponent Kirbys all around him with his Spin Slash. The Drill Stab move can also be performed both on the ground and in the air, though it doesn't travel as far in the air.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land
The Sword ability makes a return in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and can once again be obtained from Blade Knight. Multisword Attack and Spin Slash are available as attacks. Notably, Overhead Slash and the final swing of Multisword Strike have been replaced with more lateral swings instead. During his adventures, Kirby can find blueprints, which can then be taken to Waddle Dee's Weapons Shop to evolve the Copy Ability into new forms. There are three evolved forms in the game, those being Gigant Sword, Meta Knight Sword, and Morpho Knight Sword. Gigant Sword is slightly slower, but has much greater range and power. Meta Knight Sword allows Kirby to fire sword beams when he attacks and use Upper Calibur. Morpho Knight Sword allows Kirby to teleport when dodge rolling, make his sword giant for a limited amount of time, recover health when making combo strikes, and use two attacks while guarding (Sukhavati Psychic Beast on the ground, and Sukhavati Scale Wave in midair).
This ability is one of four accessible in the game's demo. It automatically becomes Gigant Sword once the three available stages are complete, but this can be reverted back to the original ability if the player so desires.

Sword Kirby does not appear directly in Kirby's Dream Buffet. However, he does appear on four Character Treats: one using a sprite from Kirby's Adventure, another pairing artwork of him with Beam Kirby from Kirby Fighters Deluxe, a third pairing artwork of him with Wrestler Kirby from Kirby Fighters 2, and one more depicting him with Wrestler Kirby riding the Buddy Star Blaster. Notably, this marks the first time Sword Kirby was referenced in a Kirby game that Sword Kirby does not actually appear in.
Sword Kirby makes an appearance as a collectible trophy.

|-
|Kirby: Meta Knight and the Puppet Princess
|In this volume, during a battle with Baron Gallic, when Kirby realizes he learned to dodge his air bullets, he turns to Sword Knight and Blade Knight to inhale one of them. Sword Knight ends up being the unlucky one, and Kirby gets the Sword ability from him. Using attacks such as Spin Slash, Kirby almost finishes off Gallic, but before he can do so, Gallic manages to control Blade Knight with his Malice Stone. Kirby tries to stop Blade Knight from following Gallic, but has no luck doing so. A bit after that, with the battle finished, Kirby drops the ability and frees Sword Knight.
|
|-
|Kirby's Decisive Battle! Battle Royale!!
|In this volume, Sword makes a major appearance, as Kirby's main ability throughout the Cake Royale, as well as a minor appearance as one of the many abilities held by the Kirby clones. Before the tournament begins, Kirby obtains the ability from Sword Knight, who had originally come to gather intel of the tournament for Meta Knight, to use the ability in said tournament. Kirby uses Sword for the tutorial round of Apple Scramble, and for the rounds of Battle Arena, Crazy Theater, Ore Express and Flagball. During the fifth and final round, a battle with King Dedede, his Dedede Hammer Throw hits Kirby hard enough for him to lose Sword, freeing Sword Knight in the process. Kirby does try to inhale him to get the ability back, but Sword Knight flees panicking.
|
|-
|Kirby Star Allies: The Great Friend Adventure!
|In this volume, Kirby obtains Sword due to Meta Knight's insistence: he throws a sword in front of Kirby and doesn't battle properly until he gets the ability. After he gives in and does so, the two start to battle, Kirby having the assistance of his Friends. As the battle gets more intense, Waddle Dee suggests Driblee to attack Kirby to give him a Friend Ability, which ends up granting Kirby Splash Sword. With its strength, Kirby and the others finish off Meta Knight. After talking with Meta Knight as he comes back to his senses, Kirby and the others head to Jambastion, Kirby still having the Sword ability. There they meet Jammerjab, which ends up attacking Kirby with his long staff, making him drop the ability. Kirby tries to inhale the sword back, but Jammerjab knocks it away before he can do so.
|
|-
|Kirby: Meta Knight and the Knight of Yomi
|In this volume, after Beryl successfully manages to free Galacta Knight once again, Kirby, King Dedede and the Meta-Knights have no choice but to battle him. The Meta-Knights quickly realize Kirby lacks a Copy Ability, and all offer to be inhaled by Kirby. Blade Knight tries to make one go at a time, but just as Kirby starts inhaling: he ends up inhaling Blade Knight and gets the Sword ability. While Sword Knight and the others chase after Beryl, Sword Kirby and King Dedede battle Galacta Knight. As soon as they manage to beat the knight, a red butterfly appears, takes over Galacta Knight, making him disappear in a light. The butterfly then transforms into Morpho Knight, who promptly after starts attacking Kirby and King Dedede. The two struggle to keep up, as Morpho Knight feels even stronger than Galacta Knight. Morpho Knight makes his sword grow giant and aims for Kirby, who ends up not being able to dodge, gets hit and drops the Sword ability, freeing Blade Knight. Almost knocked out, Kirby doesn't even try to inhale Blade Knight again, and instead tells him to run away, much to his surprise.

|-
|Kirby Fighters: The Destined Rivals!!
|In this volume, Sword first appears under the possession of Shadow Kirby, who appears with the ability to attack Meta Knight in the second floor of the tower, disappearing shortly after. Later on, Shadow Kirby reappears once again with the Sword ability, but this time to battle Kirby and Waddle Dee. After battling with Kirby and even giving him an ability to have a fair battle, he waves goodbye and disappears once again. At the end of the volume, when Kirby loses the Wrestler ability during the battle with King Dedede and Meta Knight, Shadow Kirby quickly appears to throw a Sword hat, giving Kirby the ability. Kirby prominently battles Meta Knight with the ability, until he beats him and Bandana Waddle Dee beats King Dedede. Later on the two also manage to beat Waning Crescent Masked Dedede and Waxing Crescent Masked Meta Knight with a Buddy Star Blaster. It is unclear when exactly Kirby dropped the Sword ability after that battle, but an illustration at the end of the volume shows Kirby without it.

|-
|Kirby and the Forgotten Land: Start Running to the New World!
|In this volume, Kirby gains the Sword ability in the new world, after finding a hat of the ability and inhaling it. Intrigued by its existence, Wise Waddle Dee wonders if this means this isn't the first time Popstar and the new world came into contact. Regardless, with the ability equipped, Kirby and the others move forward. Kirby uses Sword to battle both Gorimondo in Natural Plains and Clawroline in Wondaria Remains, alongside Bandana Waddle Dee, with the assistance of Elfilin. After coming back to Waddle Dee Town from Wondaria, Kirby is offered a new ability hat by Weapons-Shop Waddle Dee, who figured out the blueprints they had found before with the assistance of Meta Knight and Wise Waddle Dee, and crafted a new ability hat. Kirby drops Sword to inhale the hat, and try out the new ability.
|
|-
|Kirby and the Forgotten Land: Break Out of the Dreams of the Isolated Isles!
|In this volume, the base Sword ability doesn't make an appearance, but one of its Evolved Copy Abilities does: Gigant Sword. It is given to Kirby by Weapons-Shop Waddle Dee just before Kirby, Bandana Waddle Dee and Elfilin are sucked by the mysterious vortex that leads them to Forgo Dreams. Kirby uses Gigant Sword to battle Phantom Gorimondo, and later drops it in Waddle Dee Town to obtain a different Evolved Copy Ability.

Trivia
*Starting in Kirby Super Star, the Sword ability is a clear reference to Link from the The Legend of Zelda series. The booklet that comes with Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition states that it was done in response to Kirby's cameo appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
**The cap Kirby wears looks similar to the one Link wears. In the Super Smash Bros. series, Kirby can inhale Link to get his cap, but he only uses Link's Bow starting with Melee and Boomerang in the original Super Smash Bros.
**Similar attacks between Link and Kirby include the Spin Slash (Spin Attack), Down Thrust, Sky Energy Sword (Skyward Strike), and Sword Beam. In the last case, both the Kirby and Zelda forms of the attack can only be used when the user is at full health.
*The Sword ability's appearances in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad show very rare instances of an ability acquiring another's moves without the latter having been removed from the game. In this case, although Sword obtained the Final Cutter move from the Cutter ability, Cutter still exists in both of these games, only without said move.

This article is about the ability. For the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! character, see Sword Knight.

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

KA Sword icon.png
Among Sword's most iconic roles is its use to battle Meta Knight in many of the games he appears as a boss in.

Sword reappears in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, where it retains the same functions as in the original game. Due to the graphical updates, Kirby also adopts his green cap when getting this ability.

Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

KSS Sword Icon.png

Sword reappears as one of Kirby's regular copy abilities in Kirby Super Star and its remake Kirby Super Star Ultra. Since this game introduced the concept of Kirby wearing different hats after copying an opponent, this game is the first to show him with the signature green cap. Aside from the updated sprite, Kirby also has access to a whole pool of new sword techniques, which can be used to defeat foes more efficiently. When carrying a Sword, Kirby can also summon a Blade Knight and use him as a Helper in battle.

Additionally, in Meta Knightmare Ultra, Meta Knight can summon a Blade Knight (and sometimes, a Sword Knight) as his Helper.

Kirby Air Ride[edit]

This ability allows you to automatically swing the sword whenever rivals or enemies approach!
— Kirby Air Ride North American instruction booklet, page 39

Sword appears as an ability in this spin-off racing title. When acquired from Sword Knight, Kirby gains his familiar green hat and a sword with which he uses to swipe automatically at any enemies or opponents in his path. The ability lasts for only a short time before disappearing. Kirby uses the Sword ability in the opening cutscene to defeat two Sword Knights in cinematic fashion before facing off against Meta Knight.

Meta Knight essentially has permanent access to the Sword Ability in this game.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]

KNiDL Sword icon.png

The Sword ability returns in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror in its usual function. Its moveset in this game is similar to Kirby's Adventure and Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Additionally, Kirby can now chain his sword slashes together, which makes him able to attack very rapidly. Kirby is now also able to use Final Cutter (instead called Final Sword) against enemies, a technique which is usually exclusive to the Cutter ability. A more powerful version of the Sword ability is also featured in this game, called Master. Kirby obtains this special ability in the final boss battle, after picking up Meta Knight's sword.

Curiously, Kirby is depicted with the Sword ability on the American box art of Kirby & The Amazing Mirror.

Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]

Sword makes another appearance in the game Kirby: Squeak Squad, using the same moveset as Kirby & The Amazing Mirror. After obtaining the appropriate Ability Scroll, Kirby can infuse his sword with ice, fire, or lightning by combining its Copy Ability bubble with the Ice, Fire and Spark Copy Abilities respectively. While this does not change its moveset, it adds additional power to Kirby's sword swipes, and allows him to affect enemies and the environment in a similar manner to the element it is infused with. Notably, none of these elements can be used underwater, as noted in the abilities' pause screen description, causing Kirby's sword to revert to normal while submerged.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

KRTDL Sword.png

Sword makes another appearance in Kirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake, Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, here sporting an expanded set of moves which would carry on to subsequent main-series games. In addition, a super form of this ability has appeared, called the Ultra Sword, found in some stages, obtained when Kirby swallows a Super Blade Knight.

Meta Knight's moveset as a playable character has several similarities to the Sword ability.

Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition[edit]

Sword is one of the abilities that can be used in the sub-game New Challenge Stages. It has the exact same function and look as it does in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

Sword Kirby cutting some grass in Kirby: Triple Deluxe.

Kirby Fighters Deluxe[edit]

Sword is one of the selectable abilities in Kirby Fighters Deluxe, functioning exactly the same as it did in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, though its underwater abilities are removed due to there being no water in this game. Its unlockable Rare Outfit is based on Blade Knight's appearance.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

Sword returns in this installment, and can be combined with the Robobot Armor for new functionality. In addition, Kirby can obtain this ability if the player scans various amiibo of swordfighters (most notably Link). There is also a special Meta Knight variant of the ability that Kirby can use if the series Meta Knight amiibo is scanned in.

Kirby Battle Royale[edit]

Cool sword you've got there. Hope you're putting it to good use. Spin Slash is fairly unbeatable. Be sure to train every day!
— Knuckle Joe's comment in Kirby Battle Royale

Sword is one of the abilities available in this title, and is the one most prominently featured. With the Sword ability, Kirby can move smoothly through the battlefield and hit opponent Kirbys all around him with his Spin Slash. The Drill Stab move can also be performed both on the ground and in the air, though it doesn't travel as far in the air.

There are a number of different costumes for the Sword ability as well. Scanning the Kirby series Kirby amiibo grants a costume that represents the Ultra Sword ability.

Sword returns in this title, functioning much as it did in previous main series games. It notably loses Sky Energy Sword, however, as its input is now the universal input for using Friend Abilities. Here, like with the other abilities, Kirby can combine Sword with Power Effects to enchant it, which can include Sizzle, Blizzard and Zap fusions.

Super Kirby Clash[edit]

Sword does not appear in its normal form in Super Kirby Clash (Sword Hero is used instead). However, Regular Sword Kirby does appear as a sticker, purchasable from Magolor's Shoppe for 20 Gem Apples.

Kirby Fighters 2[edit]

Sword returns in Kirby Fighters 2 as an ability for Kirby. Along with Bomb and Staff, it is one of the starter abilities, meaning it does not need to be unlocked. Its moveset is the same as in Kirby Fighters Deluxe.

For more precise competitive-oriented information on the Sword ability in Kirby Fighters 2, see Mizuumi Wiki's page.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land[edit]

Sword Kirby battling a Sssnacker in Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

Sword Kirby does not appear directly in Kirby's Dream Buffet. However, he does appear on four Character Treats: one using a sprite from Kirby's Adventure, another pairing artwork of him with Beam Kirby from Kirby Fighters Deluxe, a third pairing artwork of him with Wrestler Kirby from Kirby Fighters 2, and one more depicting him with Wrestler Kirby riding the Buddy Star Blaster. Notably, this marks the first time Sword Kirby was referenced in a Kirby game that Sword Kirby does not actually appear in.

Other abilities which resemble Sword[edit]

In addition to Sword proper, there are a number of other abilities and items in the series which resemble the Sword ability, but are not exactly the same. These are as follows:

Sword makes an appearance in the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, being one of the first abilities to appear. When Kirby has this ability, he is able to fight like a master swordsman, using lightning-quick attacks to chop up monsters that oppose him. His signature technique when using the Sword ability is the powerful Sword Beam, which is capable of cutting clean through solid objects. Although not quite the same ability, Kirby can also wield Galaxia, and wear the same cap when doing so.

In the Kirby novel series, Sword is a recurring Copy Ability. It first appears in Kirby: Meta Knight and the Puppet Princess, and it also makes appearances in various other novels. Moreover, Sword Hero makes appearances in Kirby Clash Team Unite! and Kirby: Super Team Kirby's Big Battle!. It is obtained from Blade Knight and Sword Knight, regular swords, and Sword ability hats.

Volume appearances[edit]

The following is a complete list of every appearance the Sword ability has made in the Kirby novel series, along with the role it plays and its details in the plot of each volume:

Sword's appearances in the Kirby novel series
Volume Role Notes
Kirby: Meta Knight and the Puppet Princess In this volume, during a battle with Baron Gallic, when Kirby realizes he learned to dodge his air bullets, he turns to Sword Knight and Blade Knight to inhale one of them.
Kirby: Meta Knight and the Knight of Yomi In this volume, after Beryl successfully manages to free Galacta Knight once again, Kirby, King Dedede and the Meta-Knights have no choice but to battle him.

He's even able to pull off these moves in the air, on the ground, or underwater!"
(British English) "Kirby looks like a pretty courageous hero in that green cap, doesn't he? Indeed, this Kirby is a master of sword-swishing, fending off enemies with the powerful Spin Slash, the rapid Multisword Attack and the stylish Sword Dive. If that wasn't impressive enough, he can also use these moves on land, in mid-air AND underwater. Beautiful!"

Kirby Super Star manual[edit]

  • "There is nothing a sharp sword can't cut."

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror manual[edit]

  • "Kirby attacks by slashing at high speeds or by swinging his sword at enemies while in the air or when he lands."

Kirby: Squeak Squad manual[edit]

  • "Sword Kirby's a blur as he swings his sword at incredible speeds. He can also cut ropes and grass."

Trivia[edit]

  • Starting in Kirby Super Star, the Sword ability is a clear reference to Link from the The Legend of Zelda series. The booklet that comes with Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition states that it was done in response to Kirby's cameo appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
    • The cap Kirby wears looks similar to the one Link wears. In the Super Smash Bros. series, Kirby can inhale Link to get his cap, but he only uses Link's Bow starting with Melee and Boomerang in the original Super Smash Bros.
    • Similar attacks between Link and Kirby include the Spin Slash (Spin Attack), Down Thrust, Sky Energy Sword (Skyward Strike), and Sword Beam. In the last case, both the Kirby and Zelda forms of the attack can only be used when the user is at full health.
  • The Sword ability's appearances in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad show very rare instances of an ability acquiring another's moves without the latter having been removed from the game. In this case, although Sword obtained the Final Cutter move from the Cutter ability, Cutter still exists in both of these games, only without said move.
