Shiver Star is the fifth planet out of seven visited by Kirby and Ribbon in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. The planet's surface is covered with snow, with an underlayer of ice that can be seen through. Howevever, it is not frozen solid as there are patches of holes in the ice which Kirby can go into in order to get a Crystal Shard in stage 5-1. Stage 5-2 resides on the clouds, which is reached when Kirby is shot to the sky by a Zebon. In this stage, Kirby has to dodge flying enemies, electrical shocks, and the jaws of Maws. Once Kirby's sky adventure is over, he discovers stage 5-3, a twelve-story shopping mall filled the with enemies on every floor. Kirby must find a way to survive each floor and climb to the top to reach the end of the stage. It should be noted that each floor has different types of enemies; such as electrical or spike, and that they do not appear on other floors; except for Glom, which appears on two floors. The second to last stage is 5-4, an underground factory with many Wall Shotzos and vertically-moving walls which try to crush Kirby. He must carefully navigate through the factory and past the traps inside in order to move on to the planet boss, HR-H.

Like in all worlds of The Crystal Shards, the first four stages within the Shiver Star hide three Crystal Shards, while the final stage rewards only one after the defeat of the boss. Nevertheless, all shards within one level need not to be collected before Kirby is granted access to the next; Kirby must simply complete the level.

Synopsis

The following is a brief overview of each stage of Shiver Star and their contents. For a full guide on how to obtain the Crystal Shards, see the Crystal Shard page.

Stage 1

File:Shiver Star 1.jpg
Kirby blasts across the tundra in Stage 1.

Room 1 - The stage begins out on a snowy field. Kirby will have to progress to the right past a few ability-providing foes.

Room 2 - This area is a tall cliff that Kirby will have to climb. Lots of Pteran patrol this cliff.

Room 3 - This area consists of a long sled ride with Waddle Dee down the hillside. They'll both have to jump a number of obstacles along the way. At the end, they'll get knocked out of the sled, with Kirby tumbling into an igloo.

Room 4 - In this room, Kirby has to fight a giant Chilly. Defeating it opens the way forward.

Room 5 - Back out of the igloo, Kirby has to traverse a series of frozen pools. From here, the path leads off to the right.

Room 6 - In this last snowy walkway, Kirby will have to deal with a number of new enemies, like Maw and Putt. The stage exit lies just beyond.

Stage 2

Kirby flies up into the clouds in Stage 2.

Room 1 - The stage begins at the base of a small mountain. At the top is a Zebon waiting to blast Kirby way up into the clouds.

Room 2 - Kirby leaps out of a hole in the clouds, then continues along the cloud tops to the right. Being so high up, Kirby should try to avoid falling along the way.

Room 3 - This room contains a framework of Zebon that will fire Kirby even higher into the clouds.

Room 4 - This area is another cloudy path, though more substantial than the last one.

Room 5 - Along this cloud path, several enemies lie in ambush.

Room 6 - This area is a small room containing a giant Mopoo and some Propellers to act as guards. A crystal shard appears after the Mopoo is destroyed, though contained in a barrier. The stage exit also opens.

Stage 3

Kirby ascends the shopping mall escalators in Stage 3.

Room 1 - The stage begins out in the snow, outside a huge building. Kirby will walk directly inside.

Room 2 - Inside the building, the next area is a huge plaza, with escalators leading upward. Each one is guarded by different enemies.

Room 3 - The next area consists of several distinct rooms separated by elevators. Each one has its own theme, and its own set of enemies.

Room 4 - This room contains a giant Pupa. Defeating it yields a crystal shard.

Room 5 - In this room, Adeleine paints three different outlines of fruit from behind a glass panel.

Room 6 - This room has a bunch of switches on the floor, each a different colTemplate:Our. Pressing them is not necessary to move forward.

Room 7 - This next area is a sequence of separate rooms all directly linked to each-other. Like before, each room is different, with different enemies and hazards.

Room 8 - The last room is a circular one, with Shotzos in the middle. Kirby will have to weave and bob to get through here without getting hit.

Kirby studies the factory in Stage 4.

Room 1 - The stage begins in the snow, outside a large manhole with a factory in the background. Kirby can move on by entering the manhole.

Room 2 - This area is a winding hallway, which starts from the top with a ladder section, and leads downward, past lots of dangerous obstacles. A conveyer belt leads to the next area.

Room 3 - This long conveyer section is played by King Dedede. He'll have to bust the metal doors open while avoiding being smashed by much larger hammers.

Room 4 - With Kirby back on his own, he'll have to traverse another series of conveyers, in front of some very odd tubes containing various animal subjects.

Room 5 - This room is a magma chamber with a giant Burnis to fight. When it is defeated, a crystal shard appears inside a cage, but how will Kirby break it open?

Room 6 - This room consists of a long trot across crushing areas. Kirby will have to be nimble to not get flattened in this hall.

Room 7 - This room is a series of hallways stacked atop each-other. Kirby will have to ascend them whilst avoiding bulldozing robots. The stage exit at the top is guarded by two Zoos.

Stage 5 (Boss: HR-H/HR-E)

File:HR-H.jpg
HR-H appears on the scene to dispose of the pink threat.

Kirby finds himself on a thin platform out in a dark cityscape. Here, the giant robot HR-H appears and attacks. It will either attempt to strike at Kirby with both arms at once, creating inhalable rocks on impact, or it will shoot out missiles , then attempt to swipe with one of its arms. The missiles can also be inhaled, but they don't provide any abilities when swallowed.

After this form is defeated, HR-H falls back, then lands on the platform as HR-E. Here, it chases Kirby down, and attempts to snip at him with its pincer arms. It will also shoot missiles in this form, and attempt to land on Kirby. When it is defeated in this form, HR-E powers down and stops moving, releasing the crystal shard for Kirby to collect.

Ending Cut-scene

Out in the snow, the crystal opens up to reveal the last world - Ribbon's home of Ripple Star. Seeing the sorry state it is in causes Ribbon to despair, but she is reassured by the rest of the party. Kirby calls for everyone to go in, and runs forward, but trips and falls to the floor. Everyone else tramples him in the process. Ribbon then has to carry the battered Kirby through the portal.

Trivia

File:ShiverStarEarth.jpg
Earth's likeness seen on the Shiver Star.
  • The connection between the Shiver Star and Earth in terms of appearance has been quite the popular topic of conversation within the Kirby fandom, and rightly so, as one can see from the image apparent outlines of Earth's continents in white upon the face of the Shiver Star. However, it is unclear what the developers of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards had in mind when creating such a star in Earth's likeness.
