This article is about the select theme from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, and should not be confused with the similarly-named select theme from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.

"Select"[Japanese title] is the File Select theme from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. It was composed by Jun Ishikawa.[1]

Composition[edit]

Viewing the File Select.

"Select" is a short and generally high-pitched theme in G-flat (F-sharp) major and 4/4. It lasts only four bars. The first two follow the same melodic pattern and do not venture outside the tonic, whereas the following two bars, lead by a rising motif not unlike the one heard in "Vegetable Valley" and other tracks of the game, have a minor tone due to the use of a lowered leading tone. These two bars start high and gradually descend until reaching the initial pitch, at which point the track loops.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

In Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, "Select" plays during the newly added File Select of the game.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]

In Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, the original version of this theme reprises its function, playing during the File Select.

Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]

In Kirby: Canvas Curse, the original version of "Select" plays in the main menu when the Old School option is on.

Kirby Fighters 2[edit]

In Kirby Fighters 2, a remix of the "Select" theme plays in the options menu. Incidentally, after playing for exactly 86 seconds, it slows down and transitions to "Start Stage", followed by "Forest/Nature Area". After this ends, the track returns to "Select".

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, an arrangement of the theme can be heard as "Bomb Rally - Title", which plays prior to the Sub-Game with the same name. The original "Select" is used as "Bomb Rally - Title (Secret Song)" under the same conditions.
