— Kirby's Dream Land 3 Instruction booklet

Rick is one of Kirby's original three Animal Friends, first appearing in Kirby's Dream Land 2. He is a round, plump hamster with pink feet and big, orange spots on his white fur. Along with the other Animal Friends, Rick had a major role in Kirby's Dream Land 2 and in Kirby's Dream Land 3, though until Kirby Star Allies, he only appeared as a minor character in the anime, as well as making several smaller appearances and cameos in other games of the Kirby series.

Rick makes his debut appearance as an Animal Friend in Kirby's Dream Land 2. He is the first friend Kirby meets on his adventure, appearing in the 2nd stage of Grass Land as well as the level's intro.

When traveling together with Rick, Kirby rides on his back. Teaming up with the hamster enables him to walk a little bit faster and prevents him from slipping on ice, but makes him unable to fly, which can make certain locations impossible to escape from without leaving the friend behind. Additionally, Rick can inhale, swallow and spit out enemies like Kirby.

Like the other Animal Friends, teaming up with Rick while possessing a Copy Ability grants Kirby access to new skills, which combine Rick's powers with the attributes of Kirby's ability. When Rick is with Kirby, his theme music also plays.

In Kirby's Star Stacker, Rick, along with Kine and Coo, aids Kirby by eliminating any star blocks and devaluing hard blocks to star blocks between pairs of tiles.

Kirby's Dream Land 3

Artwork of Rick from Kirby's Dream Land 3

Rick returns as a friend for Kirby to team up with in Kirby's Dream Land 3, alongside the other Animal Friends from the game's predecessor. Although his design remains mostly the same, the spots of his fur have become brighter, particularly in his in-game sprites, where they are almost yellow. He appears together with Nago in the first stage of Grass Land, and can once again be seen in the intro of the level.

Although Rick still does not slip on ice like in the previous game, his other powers have changed greatly; the hamster is now able to wall-jump, allowing him to climb walls that would otherwise not be passable, but is considerably slower and has lost the ability to inhale. Instead, Rick opens his mouth while the Y button is held, and is able to eat enemies he walks into. Once an opponent is in his mouth, however, he can spit it out or swallow it as if he had inhaled it. The Propeller enemy moves faster in his presence if it possesses a yellow colTemplate:Oring.

Just like other Animal Friends, the hamster once again grants Kirby access to different skills if the pink hero possesses a Copy Ability, although a few of these combinations differ slightly from those of the previous game.

Ice

While the Y button is held, small snowballs appear above Kirby, which can freeze enemies. Rick cannot move while using this power, although he slides a bit if he is already in motion while activating it.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

K64Rick.png
The Rick statue from The Crystal Shards.

Although Rick does not appear in person in The Crystal Shards, he makes a cameo as one of the statues Kirby can turn into by using the Stone-Cutter Power Combo. As the Rick sculpture, Kirby can walk slowly and make small jumps, as well as being capable of wall-jumping like the hamster can in Kirby's Dream Land 3. As with the other results of Stone-Cutter, Kirby is invincible in this form and may end the transformation at any time by pushing the ability button again, causing the statue to crumble and harm nearby enemies with its debris.

Kirby: Canvas Curse

In Kirby: Canvas Curse, Rick makes a minor appearance as a painting created by Paint Roller in the sub-game Paint Panic.

Kirby Super Star Ultra

Rick makes another indirect cameo in Kirby Super Star Ultra, an enhanced remake of Kirby Super Star, where a statue of him is one of the objects Kirby can turn into by using the Stone ability. It should be noted that this statue does not appear in the original game, instead being exclusive to the remake.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Rick cameos once more as a random Stone transformation. Instead of being given his own, seperate statue, however, he is part of a sculpture consisting of all of Kirby's original Animal Friends (Rick, Coo and Kine). This result differs from other results of using the Stone ability only in appearance and not functionality.

Kirby Fighters Deluxe

As with the original Sub-Game, Rick cameos in this title, serving as a stage hazard in the forest stage.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse

Rick does not appear directly in this game. However, whenever Elline transforms Kirby into the Kirby Tank, she briefly sculpts him to resemble Rick before finishing the transformation. This is a reference to Rick's primary focus on ground-based maneuvering.

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe

Rick cameos in this title, appearing in the background of the main village area, sitting on a bench.

Kirby Battle Royale

Rick can be seen in the audience in the Slam Hockey battle mode.

Kirby Star Allies

Main article: Rick & Kine & Coo

Rick appears as a Dream Friend in this title, being tied with Kine and Coo into a single playable character. Rick is the one on-screen most of the time, performing all ground-based attacks and being in the forefront when using objects or participating in Friend Abilities. Rick can use his Stomp to bounce off of enemies while damaging them, can breathe fire (which provides the Sizzle element), and can roll up into a stone ball. While in stone form, Rick can participate in Curling, Geokinesis, and Rock Painter.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Within the Super Smash Bros. series, Rick only appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee, and only as a random trophy.

Trophy Information

Rick made his debut alongside Kirby's other friends, Coo and Kine. He looks like a meek hamster, but when he puffs himself up, he's bigger than Kirby. When he's carrying Kirby on his back, he can mimic Kirby's copy powers with some special moves of his own. Rick's claim to fame is his exceptional traction on icy surfaces.

Rick is a minor recurring character in the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!. He is an intelligent animal native to Dream Land who is capable of talking to the residents of Cappy Town. He often takes interests in the affairs of the children, and will sometimes try to defend them. He has no particular relationship with Kirby.

In the English 4Kids dub, Rick is portrayed with a strong Australian accent, and the sound of didgeridoos can sometimes be heard when he is in a scene. In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Makiko Ohmoto, the same actress who voices Kirby.
