— Menu description for Single Race in Kirby's Dream Buffet

Race is one of the three main game modes in Kirby's Dream Buffet. In this mode, the Kirbys race each other on a long and linear race track while gobbling up strawberries on the course and avoiding hazards. At the end of the course are three Strawberry Mountains awarded to whoever can get them first, though only one can be claimed by each racer.

Overview[edit]

Races form a portion of the Gourmet Grand Prix mode, serving as the first and third events. Alternatively, races can be played individually in the Single Race mode. There are a few differences between Single Race games and races in Gourmet Grand Prix, mainly that Single Race features no blueberries, cherries, or raspberries, and the Strawberry Mountains at the end are smaller. When completing a Single Race, the player is always guaranteed a Character Treat, though it may not be a new one. There are also no results bonuses if playing Single Race.

Stages[edit]

Race courses are chosen automatically by the game when playing Gourmet Grand Prix or Single Race, though the player has a good chance of seeing every course and variant if they play continuously without too many repeats. Each race course has four variants, which can be distinguished by the color of the background sky if nothing else. The race courses are as follows:

Stage Unlock criteria Description
Available at start A race course based on the eponymous pastry. Notable features include narrow wavy trackways and a large segmented cylinder that rotates near the end.
Available at start A race course built from circular cake roll pastries. The course features many very narrow split pathways connecting large circular platforms.
Unlocked at Rank 47 A race course built from various bowls of molten chocolate connected by bridges. Falling into the chocolate slows the Kirbys down, so they need to traverse it using the various confections as platforms.
Available at start A race course built out of donuts and other pastries. The course features many open-center platforms connected by narrow bridges of churros.
Available at start A race course built out of American-style hamburgers, sandwiches, French fries, and various toppings and condiments. The course features a blend of circular platforms and straight paths lined with sunny-side up fried eggs to use as springs.
Unlocked at Rank 17 A race course built out of ice cream in various forms. The course features many long stretches of slippery paths broken up by interludes on sticky surfaces.
Available at start A race course built of pancakes and waffles topped with many sweet confections. This course features some long winding bridges as well as sections where walls of syrup need to be scaled.
Available at start A race course built of various cakes covered in frosting along with candles and other toppings. The course features largely straight trackways, though with a lot of confounding terrain.
