— Guest Star Poppy Bros. Jr. Bombs Away! Pause Screen description in Kirby Star Allies

Poppy Bros. Jr. is a commonly reoccurring enemy in the Kirby series, first appearing in Kirby's Dream Land. He is a small humanoid figure who wears a clown suit with a cap similar to that of Sword Kirby's, though Poppy Bros. Jr.'s outfit is usually a pale blue in color.

Poppy Bros. Jr.'s role has varied greatly throughout the Kirby series. In his oldest appearances, he provided no Copy Ability and was typically seen riding on Grizzos or balancing on apples and Maxim Tomatoes. Starting with Kirby Super Star (and perhaps following in the footsteps of his older relative, Poppy Bros. Sr.), Poppy Bros. Jr. could be seen tossing bombs, and providing the Bomb ability when swallowed. This game also had Poppy Bros. Jr. throw boomerangs, with this case resulting in Kirby gaining the Cutter ability from him instead. In Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and every subsequent 3D Kirby game, Poppy Bros. Jr. consistently provides the Bomb ability, having become the mascot for said ability ever since.

Kirby Super Star was the first game in the series to give Poppy Bros. Jr. weapons to use against Kirby. He can be seen with either a bomb or a boomerang, providing the Bomb ability in the former case and the Cutter ability in the latter. Despite these weapons, Poppy Bros. Jr. can also be found in more traditional roles, with no weapon or balancing on an apple. Poppy Bros. Jr. can also come in many different tunic colors. Poppy Bros. Jr. can be called as a helper, gaining the moveset of Bomb Kirby and an Infinity Jump. In the Kirby Super Star Ultra-exclusive mode Revenge of the King, Poppy Bros. Jr. is replaced by a similar enemy called Perot.

In Kirby Super Star Ultra, Poppy Bros. Jr. is known as Poppy Bro Jr. and appears as one of the selectable characters in Helper to Hero. He also appears on a card in Kirby Card Swipe.

Kirby 64: The Crystal ShardsEdit

Kirby Tilt 'n' TumbleEdit

Poppy Bros. Jr. appears in Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble, though not in his usual role. He rides along a bouncy ball in half-pipe areas moving back and forth, and will bounce Kirby if they collide, not able to harm Kirby directly. There are two varieties, with blue Poppys traveling in a smaller arc, and red ones covering the whole width of the half-pipe.

LocationsEdit

Poppy Bros. Jr. appears as an enemy only in Lvl 6-2. In addition, two Poppy Bros. Jr.s appear alongside Kirby in the end-game cutscene that informs the player that they can now play the Extra Stage.

Kirby: Canvas CurseEdit

Although not appearing as an enemy in Kirby: Canvas Curse, Poppy Bros. Jr. does cameo as one of the possible drawings in the sub-game Paint Panic.

Poppy Bros. Jr. gains his biggest role in Kirby Star Allies, as well as a redesign. He acts as the tutorial for befriending foes, appearing in the cutscene as the first enemy Kirby is forced to charm using the Friend Heart. As an ally, Poppy Bros. Jr. has all of the same moves as Bomb Kirby, an Infinity Jump, and the ability to receive a Power Effect. When taking advantage of glitches, Poppy Bros. Jr. is among the most formidable characters to use for speedruns of The Ultimate Choice.

Poppy Bros. Jr. also has a slot in Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!, with his adventure given the name 'Guest Star Poppy Bros. Jr. Bombs Away!'.

Poppy Bros. Jr. returns as an enemy in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Unlike past games, his bombs take on a different appearance, now black with red symbols (the symbols match the boss icon used in Super Kirby Clash and Kirby Fighters 2). The bombs can also roll down slopes. He once again provides the Bomb ability and has his own figure (though it lacks a description).

Kirby's Dream BuffetEdit

Poppy Bros. Jr. does not appear directly in Kirby's Dream Buffet, but his likeness can be seen on two Character Treats: the first has him depicted alongside Kirby and a Chick for the "Kirby's Pinball Land (1)" treat, and the other depicts his artwork as a friend with the Bluster Bomb ability from Kirby Star Allies.

Super Smash Bros. seriesEdit

Super Smash Bros. for Wii UEdit

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Poppy Bros. Jr. has his own trophy:

Name Image Appears In/Related Games Description
Poppy Bros. Jr.   Game Boy Kirby's Dream Land (08/1992)
NES Kirby's Adventure (05/1993)
"Sometimes riding on Grizzos, other times balancing on apples or Maxim Tomatoes, this little clown clearly has some skills. Unfortunately, his job isn't to make people laugh—it's to get in Kirby's way. As you might expect from the "Jr." in his name, there's also a Poppy Bros. Sr., and he's a slightly bigger nuisance."

Super Smash Bros. UltimateEdit

Poppy Bros. Jr. appears as a primary spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The spirit can be obtained by battling it through World of Light, the Spirit Board, or by purchasing it from the Shop. It has level 1 stats of 544 attack and 362 defense, with level 99 stats of 2,721 attack and 1,814 defense. It is ★, attack-type, and possesses one spirit slot. Poppy Bros. Jr.'s spirit battle pits the player against two Young Links on the Yoshi's Island stage who favor using their down special moves in the air and have increased power with that move. Bob-ombs are the only items that can appear during this battle.

In Kirby: Right Back at Ya!Edit

Poppy Bros. Jr. in Kirby: Right Back at Ya!.

Poppy Bros. Jr. makes a tiny cameo appearance as a monster in the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! episode Cowardly Creature. He is shown briefly training as part of the "Young Monsters of the Future" program run by monster clowns, using a pair of roller skates.

In the Kirby novel seriesEdit

Poppy Bros. Jr., as he appears in Kirby: Big Race in Pupupu Land!

In the Kirby novel series, Poppy Bros. Jr. appears in Kirby: Big Race in Pupupu Land! as one of the race's many contestants. He is always grouped with the other racers, and never stands out. The only time he is mentioned by the text is when the contestants encounter Peperon in the forest. Poppy Bros. Jr. turns pale and asks why such a monstrous creature is in Dream Land.

TriviaEdit

Poppy Bros. Jr. in Helper to Hero.
  • Poppy Bros. Jr.'s alternative coloration in Kirby Super Star Ultra's Helper to Hero game is a pink suit and hat; this may be a nod to his classic design as used in non-game artwork for Kirby's Dream Land, atop Grizzo.
  • Poppy Bros. Jr. initially had different eyes, which resembled black dots with wedges in the middle like a more classic cartoon. In newer titles, his eyes look more like Kirby's, though they are slightly wider.
  • While Poppy Bros. Jr. serves as the tutorial to use Friend Hearts and create Friends in Kirby Star Allies, he is not actually the first Friend Kirby can make in the game. If Kirby obtains the Sword Copy Ability by swallowing the Blade Knight present in the room before the tutorial, and an input is made on a second controller, Kirby will create a befriended Blade Knight before being given the option to throw Friend Hearts.
