Popon is an enemy in Kirby's Dream Land 3. It is a monster which resembles a green blob with two eyes, able to grow into a tall stack of blobs when Kirby approaches. A Popon attacks by separating individual segments from its body and tossing them at Kirby, causing itself to shrink again. These segments can be inhaled and spat back at it. Attacking a Popon that is more than one segment in height only causes it to shrink instead of defeating it immediately. Once only a single segment is left, however, it can be inhaled or destroyed by any attack.

Main article: The Big Taste Test

A Popon makes an appearance as a monster sent by NightMare Enterprises in the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! episode The Big Taste Test. Initially, he is disguised as a different character called Chef Shiitake, who was once Chef Kawasaki's instructor. In this disguise, he sends advance notice to his former apprentice that he is coming to Dream Land to see how Kawasaki's cooking skills have shaped up, wishing to eat prepared Zebon. As part of the plot, King Dedede sabotages Kawasaki's cookbook by placing a sticker of Kirby over Zebon's image, making Kawasaki believe that he must cook Kirby and present him to his mentor.

Ultimately, Kawasaki 'prepares' Kirby in a dish and presents it to the false Shiitake, but could not bring himself to slaughter Kirby for the meal, instead leaving Kirby asleep in the garnish. Just as the fake Shiitake is about to eat Kirby, however, Kawasaki pushes Kirby off the table, resulting in the false Shiitake losing his temper and blowing his disguise. From there, the Popon gives up the act and transforms into his massive true form.

This Popon is characterized in the anime as much more massive and dangerous than his in-game counterpart. When he tosses his bodily globs, they turn into pools of corrosive acid on the floor, thus making Popon unsuitable for Kirby to inhale directly. Additionally, the Popon is immune to standard attacks such as Meta Knight's sword slashes, able to regenerate quickly even if sliced clean into pieces. Additionally, the Popon has a habit of shouting his own name when throwing his bodily globs. The Popon is eventually defeated by Cook Kirby, who tosses him on a giant frying pan out into space to be fried by the sun (The Popon turns brown when his body is fried.). Dedede ends up enjoying this 'fried Popon', appointing Kirby as the new court chef (which Kawasaki finds to his dismay because he worked hard), though ultimately nothing comes of this.
