Orange Ocean - Stage 7 is the final stage of Orange Ocean in Kirby's Adventure and its remake, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. This stage pits Kirby against Meta Knight, whom Kirby must defeat to obtain the sixth piece of the Star Rod and advance to the next level; Rainbow Resort.

Overview

Main article: Meta Knight

The stage begins inside a palatial chamber where Kirby finds his foe poised on a balcony to the right, refusing to move. Kirby cannot interact directly with Meta Knight until he notices and picks up the Sword left for him in the middle of the room (with a helpful prompt of 'GET IT!' overhead). Touching the sword automatically conveys the Sword ability upon Kirby, overriding any previous ability he had in the process. From there, Meta Knight throws off his cloak, jumps down from the balcony, and begins battling Kirby.

Unlike other points in the game, Kirby cannot discard or otherwise lose his sword during this fight. Meta Knight - skillful swordsman that he is - is able to block Kirby's swipes while moving back and forth. Kirby must find an opening to strike in order to actually deal a blow to the masked swordsman. Most of the time, this will involve striking after Meta Knight throws out a big move such as his Down Thrust, or if Kirby manages to hit him from behind.

Once Meta Knight is defeated, his mask breaks, briefly revealing his face before he retreats wrapped in his cloak, leaving his sword behind. The sixth piece of the Star Rod then appears for Kirby to collect. From there, Kirby dances, then moves on to the hub of Rainbow Resort.

Legacy

Being the first battle against Meta Knight in the Kirby series, this stage has been homaged in many ways through subsequent games. The battle against Meta Knight in the Kirby Super Star and Template:KSSU game Revenge of Meta Knight takes after it directly. From there, the set-up would be used again much later in the Kirby Star Allies stage Sacred Square, though with a few key differences.

In addition to those examples, the notion that Meta Knight is defeated when his mask breaks would also be used in his boss fights in [[Kirby: Squeak Squad|Template:KSqS KMoA]] and his battle as Mecha Knight+ in Kirby: Planet Robobot. In Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, Dark Meta Knight's mask also breaks at the end of his fight in Radish Ruins.
