"Nature's Navel"[derived from Japanese] is the theme for the stage of the same name in Kirby Star Allies. It was composed by Jun Ishikawa.[1]

Composition[edit]

Kirby exploring nature's navel.

"Nature's Navel" is an energetic and intense track set primarily in the key of G minor. It is similar to Mountains in an Angry Sky, as well the other lava theme of Kirby Star Allies, Star Lavadom. While Jun Ishikawa was originally instructed to compose it in a dubstep/EDM style, as he worked on the song, the dubstep feel disappeared. He left it as is regardless, preferring to let the song take him in the direction it wanted to go, rather than following the specifications.[2]

Its intro establishes the song's main phrases and musical ideas, as well as its main instrumentation. Following, brass instruments play the main melody at first, accompanied by strong percussion; the melody in this section is fairly simple, but at the end it uses C flat notes to create unique harmonies, and ends on an ascending sequence of notes. The next section repeats said melody with some minor changes, played by a wind instrument at first; afterwards, a brass instrument plays again briefly as it modulates to A minor, immediately being taken over by a violin, which is then joined by the airy "ARR1" synth, and the two end this section. Next, it modulates to D minor as an electric guitar plays a dramatic melody, while a countermelody reminiscent of the melody of the previous section plays alongside it. Then a section similar to the second section of Green Greens plays, and resolves the melody; a chime tree transitions it to the intro, making the song loop, back to G minor.

Trivia[edit]

  • At the beginning of development, "Nature's Navel" and "Star Lavadom" were used in opposite stages. Composer Jun Ishikawa wished to switch the songs, but before he could ask if that could be done, director Shinya Kumazaki suggested the same to him, and so it was done.[2] This is reflected in the songs' file names: "Nature's Navel" is named ECL_LP_ECFIRESTEP2, while "Star Lavadom" is named ECL_LP_ECFIRESTEP1.
