Metal General is a boss in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. It is the boss of Egg Engines and its defeat is required in order to complete the level.

When Kirby and his friends first enter Metal General's arena, the robot is stationary, but when they get close to it, it will activate and let out a burst of steam, signifying that the battle has begun.

Appearance

Metal General EX

Metal General is a short, robotic character with a dark blue and light blue paint job and has yellow eyes. It has a shoulder pauldron above its short left arm, boot-like legs similar to Kirby's, and a right arm with a multi-purpose weapon launcher. Overall, it looks very similar to a shark.

When knocked to half health, Metal General does not change appearance. Instead, it simply starts sparking and stuttering.

Metal General EX looks the same, but with a pink and red paint job.

Attacks

The following lists all of Metal General's attacks in the Main Game of Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Attacks in italics are used in the second phase of the fight only.
*Attack names are conjectural.

Attacks - Main Game
Attack Description
Rapid Slash
Metal General takes out a laser sword and starts slashing rapidly. The finishing strike leaves a star on the ground behind it.
Lightning Shield
Metal General flies into the air and turns on a protective shield. Spark bolts zig-zag out of the shield in various directions. During the second phase, more bolts are fired.
Fan Dash
Metal General takes out its laser sword and spins it rapidly, then dashes forward, leaving a star behind.
Missile Launch
Metal General fires a few wandering missiles from its cannon. These can be swallowed for the Bomb Copy Ability. More missiles are launched in the second phase.
Rocket Ride
Metal General summons a rocket, and rides it into the background. It will then attempt to ram Kirby with it several times, before finally crashing it down, creating a lingering field of fire on the ground and some stars. Swallowing the rocket before it explodes will yield the Crash ability.
Spin Dive
Metal General activates a small shield, then flies into a dive toward Kirby, creating stars where it lands.
Deploy Drones
Metal General deploys three small flying drones that pursue Kirby. Swallowing them yields the Beam ability.
Deploy Mines
Metal General tosses three mines on the ground, which explode on contact or after a set time. Can be swallowed for the Bomb ability.

Defeating Metal General in the Main Game causes it to crumble and explode, finishing the level.

In Extra Mode and The True Arena, the General has many more weapons in its arsenal, and uses them more frequently to litter the stage with hazards. Additionally, many of its moves that it only used in the second phase in the Main Game are used in the first phase here. Once defeated in Extra Mode, it flies off and pilots HR-D3 to attack Kirby once again.

Trivia

  • Unlike any other enemy in the game, whenever Metal General is hit, a green number indicating the amount of damage dealt flashes near it. How damage is displayed works as such: the game takes the actual damage of the attack, multiplies it by 10 and then adds a random number in this range (-3, 3) before displaying the damage value on-screen.
    • Metal General and Computer Virus are the only bosses in the main series that display the amount of damage dealt.
    • In the Kirby Clash games, the amount of damage dealt is always shown on every boss.
  • Metal General can be seen as a successor to Meta Knight's battle style in previous games, in particular with its rapid slashing attacks and how its "Spin Dive" resembles Shuttle Loop.
  • A very similar enemy to Metal General appears in Kirby: Planet Robobot as a Mid-Boss, called Security Force and mass produced by Haltmann Works Company. This replica has an abridged version of Metal General's moveset and also shows the amount of damage dealt, but it will try to self-destruct when defeated, unlike the original robot.
