This article is about King Dedede wearing the mask first given to him in Kirby Super Star Ultra. For other instances of masked variants of King Dedede, see Waning Crescent Masked Dedede and Forgo Dedede.

Masked Dedede is a frequently-recurring "alter-ego" of King Dedede who first appeared as a boss in Kirby Super Star Ultra, in Revenge of the King. This version of King Dedede comes equipped with a power-amplifying mask with a design similar to Dark Mind's[1] and a mechanical hammer, variously referred to as the "New Dedede Hammer"[2] or the "Masked Dedede Hammer 2.0".[3] With this equipment, Masked Dedede has greater health than he does normally, and is capable of performing a variety of new attacks, including firing missiles, laser beams, and a flamethrower from his hammer, and initiating a super-speedy hammer spin attack, though becoming rather dizzy afterward. Masked Dedede also comes with his own special version of King Dedede's Theme, based off the one that plays in the SNES remake of Kirby's Star Stacker, which has a much faster tempo.

Kirby Super Star Ultra

Kirby battling against Masked Dedede in Revenge of the King.

In Kirby Super Star Ultra, Masked Dedede is the final boss in Revenge of the King, and the first of the Final Four in The True Arena. His battle is similar to King Dedede's in Spring Breeze, except that he has more health and new attacks. In addition, there is an electric field above the battle arena that can shock Kirby if he floats too high or destroy any Ability Star on contact. Notably, despite being a more powerful version of King Dedede, Masked Dedede still flinches when hit by Kirby, which means many of his attacks can be interrupted.

In Revenge of the King, Dedede offers Kirby a hammer before the battle, similar to Meta Knight's offering of a sword in most of his fights. In The True Arena, no weapon is offered beforehand. When Masked Dedede is defeated in battle and is sent flying in Revenge of the King, his voice is considerably lower than when he is launched in Spring Breeze. In The True Arena, his mask breaks and he simply slides back on the ground a bit.

Attacks

The following are all of Masked Dedede's attacks in Kirby Super Star Ultra. Note that attack names are conjectural:

Masked Dedede's attacks in Kirby Super Star Ultra
Attack Description
Head Slide Masked Dedede runs and then dives at Kirby. His mask becomes slightly offset when he lands on the ground.
Inhale Masked Dedede approaches Kirby and then tries to inhale him. He has to shift his mask aside to perform this move.
Hammer Masked Dedede approaches Kirby and then attempts to strike with his hammer in an overhead swing. This leaves a drop star on impact.
Jet Hammer Spin Masked Dedede activates a jet on his hammer and starts spinning around rapidly along the ground. After the attack stops, Dedede is left dazed for a moment as his mask is shifted aside.
Super Dedede Jump Masked Dedede leaps into the air and then comes back down three times, leaving drop stars on each side of him every time he lands.
Missile Launcher Masked Dedede opens a hatch on his hammer and launches three missiles out of it, which can be inhaled by Kirby.
Leaping Hammer Masked Dedede jumps high into the air and then comes down with his hammer out front. When he lands, his hammer sends out a shockwave that travels to the end of the arena, then leaves behind a drop star.
Belly Slide Masked Dedede puffs up as if to hover, but instead slides at Kirby.
Flamethrower Masked Dedede opens a hatch on his hammer and shoots a gout of flame at Kirby.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

Masked Dedede in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Strings are visible on his back and hammer, which are being pulled by Taranza.
The rare Keychain.

In the Story Mode of Kirby: Triple Deluxe, as Kirby enters the boss stage of Royal Road, Taranza will start controlling King Dedede using silk puppet strings and will use his magic to enhance his powers, giving him the form of Masked Dedede.

Masked Dedede's battle in Kirby: Triple Deluxe is very similar to the Kirby Super Star Ultra version during the first phase, as he uses the Masked Dedede Hammer 2.0 for many of his attacks, in addition to using his normal retinue of moves. However, when his first health bar is depleted, Masked Dedede will be knocked down and his hammer destroyed. Taranza then uses his magic to revive Dedede, turning his robes purple and leaving him with a heavily damaged mask, now referred to by the game as Masked Dedede's Revenge. Due to his hammer being broken, Masked Dedede's Revenge picks up a battle axe from one of the statues in the background and continues the fight with a new health bar. With the axe, Masked Dedede's Revenge has a much longer reach with his attacks, and Taranza helps out by tossing his magic orbs for the King to bat at Kirby. Dedede also gains the ability to use powerful spinning attacks, including his own version of Meta Knight's Mach Tornado, though this leaves him very dizzy afterward. When Masked Dedede's Revenge is finally defeated, the mask shatters completely and Dedede is left unconscious for a long while afterward. He does not awake until after Kirby defeats Queen Sectonia.

In The Arena, after defeating the previous seven battles (spawned in random order), Masked Dedede is fought again in the fixed 8th battle, later followed by the final two battles with Queen Sectonia. Masked Dedede also appears as a collectable unique keychain. It can be found in Stage 3 of Old Odyssey.

Attacks

The following lists Masked Dedede's attacks in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Attacks in italics are used by Masked Dedede's Revenge only. Note that attack names used are conjectural.

Masked Dedede's attacks in Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Attack Description
Head Slide Masked Dedede runs and then dives at Kirby.
Super Dedede Jump Masked Dedede leaps into the air and then lands suddenly in another location. He may do this up to three times in succession.
Hammer/Axe Swing Masked Dedede raises his hammer and slams the ground with it. If Kirby is airborne, then Masked Dedede will jump up and swing the hammer in mid-air. When he lands, a shockwave emanates from it. In the second phase, he does this attack with his axe instead, with each swing on ground level causing shockwaves.
Hypernova Inhale Masked Dedede inhales, creating a big vortex. If Kirby doesn't run fast enough from the suction, he will be sucked up and then spat out at the screen.
Hammer Cannon Masked Dedede preps his hammer, which opens up and shoots out three missiles. The cannon may also shoot out a large gout of flame.
Hover Masked Dedede takes in air and starts hovering toward Kirby.
Spinning Slash Masked Dedede spins his axe rapidly around in an attempt to catch Kirby in his dance. He gets dizzy afterwards.
Energy Strike Masked Dedede creates two orbs of energy, and swats them at Kirby with his axe.
Tornado Slash Masked Dedede spins rapidly around with his axe surrounded by dark energy and takes to the air, flying in and out of the arena. He gets dizzy afterwards.
Axe Flurry Masked Dedede wildly swings his poleaxe about, aiming for Kirby as he does so, and turning with his strikes as needed. He finishes with a long lunge attack.
Orb Blast Taranza produces some energy orbs in the background and then throws them at Masked Dedede in the foreground, who hits them back with his axe. This portion repeats several times. Once done, Taranza produces an even bigger energy orb and sends it to Dedede. After getting hit with his axe, the orb bounces along the arena for a bit before getting launched to Dedede in the background, who hits it with his axe one more time, sending it back to the foreground and causing it to explode. Each small orb that hits the side of the stage produces a Star from it while the final orb produces multiple when it explodes.
Exploding Leap Attack Masked Dedede jumps into the air with his poleaxe, and then comes crashing down, creating a large explosion where he lands.

Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe

In Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe, this specific mask is one of the unlockable outfits for King Dedede.

Masked Dedede appears as a unique sticker in Kirby: Planet Robobot. It can be found in Stage 5 of Rhythm Route.

Kirby's Blowout Blast

At the end of Secret Path in Kirby's Blowout Blast, Kirby faces off against King Dedede's Revenge, similarly to how he was in Stage 5-EX. However, when he's knocked away, and the Sparkling Stars come to grow him giant, this time he gets his mask and jet hammer, becoming Giant Masked Dedede. His attack patterns are similar to the regular Giant King Dedede fight, but the mask protects him from singular Star Bullets. He can also shoot a giant laser and missiles from his Jet Hammer. The mask breaks when he is defeated. His theme in this game was remixed in Super Kirby Clash.

Notably, when Masked Dedede uses his inhale here, the mouthpiece of the mask opens. In earlier games, Dedede would have to shift his mask aside for a moment if he wanted to use his inhale.

Trivia

  • Shinya Kumazaki stated on Miiverse that the design of Masked Dedede's mask is based on Dark Mind's.[1] This may have been what led to the creation of King D-Mind, a hybrid between the two characters.
  • Masked Dedede's two phases in Kirby: Triple Deluxe share one total health value despite having two health bars, similar to HR-D3 and Hyness.
    • Considered the DX version of the Triple Deluxe Masked Dedede, Shadow Dedede's two phases use the same health bar instead, similar to Corrupt Hyness.
  • The Kirby Super Star Ultra artwork of Masked Dedede depicts his hammer as having a long and sharp point at the end of the handle. While the in-game hammer does come to a point at the handle, it is not nearly as long or pronounced as it is in this artwork.
