"Masked Dedede's Theme",[1] also known as "The Masked King",[2] is a music track commonly associated with King Dedede's alter-ego, Masked Dedede, as its name implies. It is essentially a remix of "King Dedede's Theme" played at a faster tempo. This theme is also often associated with other forms of King Dedede who wear different masks, such as Waning Crescent Masked Dedede and Forgo Dedede, as well as many alternate counterparts such as Shadow Dedede, King D-Mind, and Phantom Forgo Dedede.

Game appearances

Kirby Super Star Ultra

In Kirby Super Star Ultra, "King Dedede's Theme" is remixed to create a specific new version associated with Masked Dedede in Revenge of the King. It is arranged in a much faster tempo than the original version and appears to take influence from the remix of the theme from the SNES version of Kirby's Star Stacker. The theme can be found as Track 087 in the Sound Test, Track 30 on the Kirby Ultra Super Deluxe Original Sound Track, and Track 29 on the Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition Compilation Soundtrack.

Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition

In Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition, the original version of the theme plays when viewing Kirby Super Star Ultra in Kirby's History.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

In Kirby: Triple Deluxe, "Masked Dedede's Theme" is remixed with orchestral and techno instrumentation, which is used for the fights against Masked Dedede's Revenge and Shadow Dedede. It is titled "Dedede's Royal Payback" on the Kirby: Triple Deluxe Soundtrack, where it can be found as Track 34. It can also be found as Track 97 in Kirby: Triple Deluxe's Jukebox. It has a slightly slower drumline, and a new second loop with different instrumentation.

Kirby Fighters Deluxe

Main article: History of Dedede

In Kirby Fighters Deluxe, a special retro-style medley version of "King Dedede's Theme" plays when battling Team DDD on the Very Hard difficulty setting. This theme includes an 8-bit version of the intro riff to "Masked Dedede's Theme" at the start. This medley is titled "History of Dedede" according to a Miiverse post and Kirby Star Allies: The Original Soundtrack.

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe

In Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, the second phase of King D-Mind's battle plays a new orchestral medley of Dark Mind's Theme and "Masked Dedede's Theme".

Kirby's Blowout Blast

A new remix of "Castle Lololo" and "Masked Dedede's Theme" in a heavy metal style is used in the final battle with Giant Masked Dedede on the Secret Path in Kirby's Blowout Blast.

Kirby Battle Royale

Another new remix of "Masked Dedede's Theme", alongside the Kirby Battle Royale main theme and "Kirby's Triumphant Return", appears as Dededestroyer Z's battle theme. This track appears in the Music Collection as Cake Royale 13.

Kirby Star Allies

In Kirby Star Allies, during the second phases of both Parallel Dedede and Parallel Meta Knight's battle, the music changes to a remix titled 異空をかけた剣王との戦い (Another Swordsman and King's World to Win). It's a heavy metal version of "A Battle of Friends and Bonds", the main boss theme of Kirby Star Allies, with segments of "Masked Dedede's Theme" and "My Friend and the Sunset". It can be found as Track 22 on disc 5 of the original soundtrack. In addition, when summoned by the Dream Rod or when he is selected on the title screen of Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!, a quick remix of "Masked Dedede's Theme" plays as his jingle. This version is arranged by Hirokazu Ando and can be found as Track 130 in the Jukebox as of version 4.0.0. On Kirby Star Allies: The Original Soundtrack, it is titled デデデ大王さまが、きてやったぜ! (King Dedede Has Arrived!).

Lastly, "History of Dedede" plays during the King Dedede fight in Soul Melter and Parallel Dedede's first phase in Soul Melter EX in Kirby Star Allies. It is Track 6 on disc 5 of Kirby Star Allies: The Original Soundtrack.

Super Kirby Clash

In Super Kirby Clash, King D-Mind's standard battle uses Giant Masked Dedede's theme from Kirby's Blowout Blast, while the battle against King D-Mind's Revenge uses both of his themes from Team Kirby Clash Deluxe. In both cases, the themes are lightly remixed with electronic instrumentation and additional effects.

Kirby Fighters 2

Hints of "Masked Dedede's Theme" play in Waning Crescent Masked Dedede & Waxing Crescent Masked Meta Knight's battle theme in Kirby Fighters 2, though only as accompaniment to the main tune, which more closely follows the main version of "King Dedede's Theme" along with "Boarding the Halberd" and "VS. Meta Knight".

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

In Kirby and the Forgotten Land, a new remix titled "Masked and Wild: D.D.D." plays during Forgo Dedede's and Phantom Forgo Dedede's second phases. It's arranged by Yuki Shimooka and can be found as Track 61 at the Waddle Live! Corner Stage. This version of the theme follows the original theme fairly closely, though it features a few different bridging interludes and includes King Dedede's "chanting" as an instrument.

Kirby's Dream Buffet

In Kirby's Dream Buffet, the original version from Kirby Super Star Ultra can be unlocked for potential use in races upon reaching Gourmet Rank 82, named Kirby Super Star Ultra: Memorial Song 2 in-game. The arrangement from Kirby and the Forgotten Land, named Kirby and the Forgotten Land: Bonus Song 2 in-game, can also be unlocked for potential use in races after the player's first Gourmet Grand Prix if the game detects save data for Kirby and the Forgotten Land on the user's Nintendo Switch.

Additionally, the Kirby 30th Anniversary Music Festival "King Dedede Medley", which has a section dedicated to "Masked Dedede's Theme", is unlocked by reaching Gourmet Rank 135, named Kirby 30th Music Fest: HAL Laboratory Dream Band Song in-game. Much like "Green Tree Memories from Kirby" and "Welcome to the New World!", the medley continues to play during the minigame portion of the Gourmet Grand Prix, only switching to a different music track for the battle royale.

Other appearances

"Masked Dedede's Theme" was performed live in the Kirby 25th Anniversary Orchestra Concert, as part of the track "King Dedede & Meta Knight Medley".

The theme was also performed live at the Kirby 30th Anniversary Music Festival as part of the King Dedede Medley, along with "Macho of Dedede" and "VS. Robo Dedede".
