Masher is an enemy that made its debut in the Game Boy game Kirby's Dream Land 2. It is a iron-clad warrior roughly the size of Kirby with round hands and feet, which is armed with a large spiked ball on a chain. Its entire body is encased in purple armor, which bears a Greek cross on the front of its cylindrical breastplate and an orange spike on top of the flat helmet part.

In Kirby's Dream Land 2, Masher is part of a trio of strong adversaries consisting of itself, Blade and Butch. Just like the latter two, it is very rare throughout most of the game, although quite frequently encountered in the final level, Dark Castle. Masher moves towards Kirby and uses its spiked ball to battle him, being able to execute two slightly different attacks with it. Both of these start with Masher swinging the weapon and tossing it straight into the direction it is facing, but the way it returns to the thrower differs; whereas it simply moves back on the same path most of the time, an alternative technique causes it to move upwards in a curving motion before falling straight down to be caught by the combatant.

Like Butch and Blade, Masher cannot be inhaled, but is vulnerable to all other attacks. However, its spiked ball is able to block projectiles while it is moving.

After an extraordinarily long absence, Masher returns in the Sub-Game Kirby 3D Rumble, this time as a Mid-Boss. Unlike in its previous incarnation, however, Masher's mace is not swung like a flail, but instead used like a club.

Masher has also received a major design change in its transition to 3D. It is now quite a bit larger than Kirby, sports a variety of colorations, and is considerably blockier in appearance. It still possesses disembodied hands and displays its cross on its chest, but the cross now looks more like a D-pad. Additionally, its armor has rivets on it, making it look like a robot. As a final touch, the orange spike it once bore on its helmet is smaller, and it has two similar spikes on its hands.

There are three different varieties of Masher in this Sub-Game. Each one appears at the end of a level, and has different attacks to use. Each Masher is larger than the previous one, and also varies in visual appearance, beyond just the color.

Level Image Appearance Notes
Level 1 - "Mini Masher"[1] File:Masher PR.jpg Blue in color. Head spike is rather petite. This Masher is rather slow. Its signature attack is charging up, then slamming its mace into the ground to create a shockwave.
Level 2 - "Masher" File:Masher PR 2.jpg Purple in color. Head spike is comparable to the original Masher. Rivets are also somewhat spiked. Mace is more ornate. This Masher uses a dash attack in addition to the normal swings.
Level 3 - "Mega Masher"[2] File:Masher PR 3.jpg This Masher is red, with gilded spikes and mace, a horned helmet, and a shield. It also roars. This Masher can create homing beams with its mace swings and attempt to guard with its shield. It will also create numerous shockwaves and use a dash. To top it off, its Stamina is significantly higher than the others.

In Kirby's Blowout Blast, Masher only appears in Level 5, Level 5-EX and Secret Path. All three variants appear throughout these levels, but none are faced as the last encounter.

Masher appears as a monster in the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! episode Monster Management. Here, it looks similar to its game counterpart, but is gigantic, as well as possessing arms, a singular shoulder plate on its left side and a long, green cape, all of which are absent from its in-game design. Its weapon is also more complex, having a long, heavy stick attached to the chain on the side opposite the spike ball.

Masher is ordered from NightMare Enterprises by Knuckle Joe as part of an apparent plot to eliminate Kirby. By tossing its weapon as well as performing a strong attack that involves spinning around very quickly, the monster badly harms the Star Warrior and knocks out Meta Knight. However, as it turns out that Knuckle Joe had only ordered it so he could fight it, he ends up assisting Kirby in his struggle with the colossus, disarming and eventually defeating it, causing it to explode.

Trivia

  • Masher is the first Mid-Boss to not provide a Copy Ability when swallowed.
