This article is about the final level of Kirby's Adventure/Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. For the fountain in a more general context, see Fountain of Dreams. For other pages relating to the fountain, see this disambiguation page.

Level 8 - The Fountain of Dreams is the final level in Kirby's Adventure and its remake; Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Unlike the previous levels, this one features no hub, and no standard stages or other games, instead throwing Kirby directly into the last fight with Nightmare after the intro cut-scene. Completing this level completes the game and triggers the end credits.

Intro cut-scene

The level begins with a cut-scene with the level name hovering over the scene (and a pink frame in Kirby's Adventure). It begins with Kirby posed with the now-completed Star Rod. From there, he begins walking to the right away from the title and frame toward the fountain proper. As he walks, King Dedede jumps onto Kirby's heels and tries to drag him back, insisting that Kirby not return the Star Rod to the fountain. Kirby tries to ignore him and presses on, but Dedede continues to drag at his heels. Eventually, Kirby tires of this and knocks Dedede away using the rod. From there, he jumps onto the fountain and plants the rod in the fountain as Dedede looks on in fear.

Having planted the rod, Kirby jumps back. From there, they observe the Nightmare emerging from the fountain, knocking the Star Rod away and causing Kirby and Dedede to panic. Once the Nightmare orb flies off, Dedede takes some initiative by inhaling both Kirby and the Star Rod, then spitting him with the rod after Nightmare to deal with him.

Overview

Main article: Nightmare

Immediately following the cut-scene, Kirby is thrown into an airborne battle with Nightmare's Power Orb. In this first phase, Kirby must maneuver around the orb's volleys while he continually fires Star Bullets from the Star Rod at the orb to damage it. Unlike other boss fights, this one runs on a time limit, although instead of a visible countdown timer, Kirby must defeat the orb before he falls to the ground and gets crushed by the moving frame.

After defeating the orb, it flies off toward the giant moon in the background. Kirby hops on to a Warp Star and gives chase. On the moon proper, Kirby lands with the Star Rod still in hand. In the background, the orb can be seen transforming into Nightmare's final wizard form. From there, the fight begins anew as the wizard appears in Kirby's plane. In this form, Nightmare cannot be harmed by the Star Rod's projectiles unless he is hit in the vulnerable region underneath his cape. This region is only exposed during certain attacks. Unlike other bosses, Nightmare changes tactics and becomes more difficult to hit as his stamina decreases.

Once defeated, Nightmare lets out a horrifying scream as he disintegrates, leaving Kirby alone on the moon. From here, the ending cut-scene plays out as Kirby reconciles with King Dedede, then returns the Star Rod to the fountain, now free of any nightmares. From there, the credits roll and the game is complete.

Differences between versions

Much like with the battle against King Dedede, Nightmare is much larger in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, making him easier to hit, but also making him a larger threat on the screen.
