Far away, on a distant terminus in outer space, a strange robed figure approaches a giant black crystal heart encased in a glass ball. The wizard-like being then raises an incantation, which causes the heart to shatter, shooting pieces of it all over the galaxy. Many of these pieces fly all the way to Popstar, where they begin raining down on the normally peaceful planet. Meta Knight and King Dedede separately encounter the hearts as they land, and Dedede in particular becomes entranced by them. Meanwhile, Kirby is sleeping beside a hollow hillside, when a separate heart-shaped ray hits his head. This causes him to stir, only to discover that Dedede's Waddle Dees are running toward Mt. Dedede with as much food as they can carry, leaving Kirby to presume that Dedede is stealing all the food from Dream Land again. Kirby rushes off toward the castle to put a stop to this. Along the way, Kirby discovers a strange new power within himself that allows him to charm enemies and make them into his friends. With the help of his new allies, Kirby battles his way to Dedede's castle and confronts the king, who up to that point was busy gorging himself on rotten fruit. Dedede immediately attacks, transforming into an overly muscular version of himself in the process. Despite this, Kirby manages to beat him, causing one of the dark hearts to pop out of the King as he reverts to normal. The heart then flies away on its own, prompting Kirby to give chase.

Kirby runs all over Popstar in pursuit of the heart, ultimately bumping into Meta Knight - also possessed - who forces a fight. After defeating (and freeing) the masked swordsman, a giant alien fortress embeds itself into Popstar. Kirby and his allies board the hostile base, battling their way to the top. Along the way, they encounter three mage generals; the sisters Francisca, Flamberge, and the head general Zan Partizanne. As Kirby fights them, they make it known that they are in pursuit of the hearts which fell onto Popstar, intent on using them to revive their dark god. When Kirby defeats them, they initiate the fortress's self destruct sequence, in hopes that Kirby will be trapped in the rubble. Instead, Kirby and his allies escape and fly off into outer space. They visit several alien worlds in pursuit of the hearts. In the process, they are forced to fight the generals again, along with other formidable opponents. Eventually, Kirby and his allies make it to the home base of the generals, a space station called Jambandra. They eventually reach the terminus where the same wizard from the intro is attempting to repair the crystal heart by recombining the pieces. Zan Partizanne tries to stop Kirby from interfering, but is defeated.

Upon the defeat of his finest general, the wizard (called Hyness) turns and faces Kirby himself. After kicking his own general out of the way, Hyness proceeds to deliver a crazed rant at Kirby, blaming his kind for the woes that fell upon him, and reasserting his desire to awaken his dark god. He battles Kirby, but shortly into the fight, his cloak gets knocked off, revealing his true face. From there, he uses the inanimate bodies of the three generals as projectiles to fight Kirby with, his mad power proving difficult to overcome. Kirby ultimately beats Hyness, but this only forces the cornered officiant to resort to drastic measures. He sacrifices the three generals, and then himself by plunging all of them into the heart, mending it completely and causing it to awaken. The dark god forms into a terrible masked giant named Void Termina, but Kirby uses a special power with his allies in the form of the Star Allies Sparkler to battle it with. The fight is long and hard, but in the process, Kirby and his allies make their way into Void Termina's body and free Hyness and the generals from its grasp. After sustaining heavy damage, Void Termina assumes its true form, and the allies battle it one more time. Kirby finishes it off by engaging in a prolonged laser tug-o-war with the dark god, and finishes by summoning all of his allies to attack the beast at once, destroying it utterly. Kirby and his allies escape as Void Termina's death causes the world they were fighting on to shatter. Kirby is knocked out by the debris, but wakes up in outer space along with the allies he had just fought with. Together, they ride a Warp Star back to Popstar, having vanquished yet another great evil from the universe.

Gameplay

Kirby Star Allies is an action platformer, styled after previous games in the main series, greatly resembling Kirby's Return to Dream Land in its art style, but in HD. The central premise of the game revolves around Kirby's ability to toss hearts at enemies to befriend them and turn into allies in the vain of the Helpers from Kirby Super Star (Ultra). Collecting certain friends will allow Kirby to solve various puzzles, and perform combo attacks called Friend Abilities. These attacks include combining Copy Abilities, as well as performing special moves with the friends. Once Friends are acquired, they can either be controlled by the CPU, or controlled by additional players. In the stages, Kirby and his friends can collect Picture Pieces. These serve as optional collectable items which are used to complete Celebration Pictures.

The main Story Mode has Kirby and his friends traversing four main areas (with a fifth being a final boss level) and visiting stages in each area, unlocking them by clearing them in succession. Optional extra stages can also be unlocked by finding and pressing Big Switches in certain stages. These switches also unlock the Dream Palaces in each level, where Kirby can recruit the special Dream Friends if he so wishes.

Copy Abilities

New Abilities

Returning Abilities

Friend Abilities

In addition to standard Copy Abilities, Kirby and his Friends can combine their powers together to create combinations. This can be done in a number of different ways, as illustrated in the sections below.

Elemental Augments

Main article: Elemental Augment

Elemental enhancements can be applied to neutral-type Copy Abilities (typically those that resemble weapons). To do this, the weapon holder must raise their weapon, then the element wielder must use an elemental attack on the former ally to imbue it. There are five elemental augments in total, as follows:

  • Blizzard - provided by ice-based attacks
  • Bluster - provided by wind-based attacks
  • Sizzle - provided by fire-based attacks
  • Splash - provided by water-based attacks
  • Zap - provided by electric-based attacks

Friend Combo Attacks

In addition to the above, there are special one-time moves which the Star Allies can perform by combining specific abilities together, or by simply having the allies involved. These abilities are as follows:

Friend Actions

Finally, there are five special formations which can only be used by finding a Friend Platform at various points in stages. These require four allies of any type to activate, and are as follows:

Friends

Standard friends can be recruited by tossing Friend Hearts at them in the stages where they appear. There are also special friends (referred to as Dream Friends) who can be obtained by visiting a Dream Palace. Dream Friends are special characters with their own unique move-sets.

amiibo

Kirby Star Allies is compatible with amiibo. Scanning in a Kirby series amiibo (or a Qbby amiibo) during main gameplay will grant Kirby with a number of items, including Food and some Picture Pieces. Scanning in any other amiibo figurine will also grant items, but not as many.

Trivia

  • Friends appear to be able to bear different [[Color Changes|colTemplate:Our schemes]] depending on their player number, like Sir Kibble in green armor. In addition, the Friends wear Kirby-style hats appropriate to their ability once they've been recruited.
  • The Cleaning ability returns in this title, after a 21 year long absence.
  • This game marked the return of Two Face as a common enemy, who hadn't been seen since Kirby's Dream Land.
  • This is the first game in the Kirby series to have an official release with Chinese text.
  • With the inclusion of Dream Friends, this will mark the first time that Marx is playable in the series.
  • Unlike in previous Kirby games, the first letters of this game's five levels won't spell out something, however the first letters of every stage in World of Miracles: Planet Popstar does form a word. When the stages are followed in clockwise order and the Dream Palace is excluded, the first letters spell out the word "FRIENDS".
    • In the Spanish version, it spells out "AMISTAD" (friendship).
    • In the French version, it spells out "COPAINS" (friends).
    • In the Dutch version, it spells out "STERREN" (stars).
    • In the German version, it spells out "FSIENDR". It doesn't mean anything, but note that it would spell "FRIENDS" if the S and R were swapped around.
    • In the Italian version, it spell out "AMICONI" (buddies).
    • In the Chinese version, it spells out "卡比与新星同盟"(simplified)/"卡比與新星同盟"(traditional) (Kirby & Star Allies).
  • In Version 2.0.0 of the game, enemies which can be made into Friends were tweaked to take longer to vanish after being defeated, thus giving Kirby more time to recruit them if he wants.[1]
