Kirby Star Allies is a main-series Kirby game for the Nintendo Switch. It was released on March 16, 2018 in Japan, North America, Europe, Australia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan; on April 26, 2018 in South Korea, making it the first main-series release on a home console since [[Kirby's Return to Dream Land|Template:KRDL KAW]] in 2011. It is a side-scrolling platformer game with three-dimensional visuals that succeeds the Nintendo 3DS titles of Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Kirby: Planet Robobot in general style, though it takes on its own set of features and attributes. In place of a special power-up or vehicle specifically for Kirby, Kirby Star Allies features extensive multiplayer co-op, allowing Kirby to recruit allies from various on-stage enemies or summon special partners from the Dream Palaces. With the aid of these partners, Kirby can then perform combination moves, including some special transformations that can only be done with a full party of four.

A downloadable demo of Kirby Star Allies was released in the Nintendo eShop on March 1, 2018 in Europe and March 4, 2018 in North America, which features small portions from the first level in the game, and ends after defeating King Dedede.

Story

Far away, on a distant terminus in outer space, a strange robed figure approaches a giant black crystal heart encased in a glass ball. The wizard-like being then raises an incantation, which causes the heart to shatter, shooting pieces of it all over the galaxy. Many of these pieces fly all the way to Popstar, where they begin raining down on the normally peaceful planet. Meta Knight and King Dedede separately encounter the hearts as they land, and Dedede in particular becomes entranced by them. Meanwhile, Kirby is sleeping beside a hollow hillside, when a separate heart-shaped ray hits his head. This causes him to stir, only to discover that Dedede's Waddle Dees are running toward Castle Dedede with as much food as they can carry, leaving Kirby to presume that Dedede is stealing all the food from Dream Land again. Kirby rushes off toward the castle to put a stop to this. Along the way, Kirby discovers a strange new power within himself that allows him to charm enemies and make them into his friends. With the help of his new allies, Kirby battles his way through Whispy Woods and Dedede's castle, then confronts the king, who up to that point was busy gorging himself on rotten fruit. Dedede immediately attacks, transforming into an overly muscular version of himself in the process. Despite this, Kirby manages to beat him, causing one of the dark hearts to pop out of the King as he reverts to normal. The heart then flies away on its own, prompting Kirby to give chase.

Kirby runs all over Popstar in pursuit of the heart, ultimately bumping into Meta Knight - who is also possessed - who forces a fight. After defeating the masked swordsman and freeing him of his possession, a giant alien fortress embeds itself into Popstar. Kirby and his allies board the hostile base, battling the gatekeepers Pon & Con and making their way to the top. Along the way, they encounter three mage generals; the sisters Francisca, Flamberge, and the head general Zan Partizanne. As Kirby fights them, they make it known that they are in pursuit of the hearts which fell onto Popstar, intent on using them to revive their dark god. When Kirby defeats them, they initiate the fortress's self destruct sequence, in hopes that Kirby will be trapped in the rubble. Instead, Kirby and his allies escape and fly off into outer space. They visit several alien worlds in pursuit of the hearts. In the process, they are forced to fight the Mage-Sisters again, along with other formidable opponents. Eventually, Kirby and his allies make it to the home base of the generals, a space station called Jambandra. They eventually reach the terminus where the same wizard from the intro is attempting to repair the crystal heart by recombining the pieces. Zan Partizanne tries to stop Kirby from interfering, but is defeated.

Upon the defeat of his finest general, the wizard (whose name is revealed as Hyness) turns and faces Kirby himself. After kicking his own general out of the way, Hyness proceeds to deliver a crazed rant at Kirby, blaming his kind for the woes that fell upon him, and reasserting his desire to awaken his dark god. He battles Kirby, but shortly into the fight, his hood gets knocked off, revealing his true face. From there, he uses the inanimate bodies of the Three Mage-Sisters as projectiles to fight Kirby with, his mad power proving difficult to overcome. Kirby ultimately beats Hyness, but this only forces the cornered officiant to resort to drastic measures. He sacrifices the Mage-Sisters, and then himself by plunging all of them into the heart, mending it completely and causing it to awaken. The dark god forms into a terrible masked giant (named Void Termina), but Kirby uses a special power with his allies in the form of the Star Allies Sparkler to battle it with. The fight is long and hard, but in the process, Kirby and his allies make their way into Void Termina's body and free Hyness and the Mage-Sisters from its grasp. After sustaining massive damage, Void Termina assumes its true form, and the allies battle it one more time. Kirby finishes it off by engaging in a prolonged laser tug-o-war with the dark god, and finishes by summoning all of his allies to attack the beast at once, destroying it utterly. Kirby and his allies escape as Void Termina's death causes the world they were fighting on to shatter. Kirby is knocked out by the debris but wakes up in outer space along with the allies he had just fought with. Together, they ride a Warp Star back to Popstar, having vanquished yet another great evil from the universe.

Gameplay

Kirby Star Allies is an action platformer, styled after previous games in the main series, greatly resembling [[Kirby's Return to Dream Land|Template:KRDL KAW]] in its art style, but in HD. The central premise of the game revolves around Kirby's ability to toss hearts at enemies to befriend them and turn into allies in the vain of the Helpers from Kirby Super Star (Ultra). Collecting certain friends will allow Kirby to solve various puzzles, and perform combo attacks called Friend Abilities. These attacks include combining Copy Abilities, as well as performing special moves with the friends. Once Friends are acquired, they can either be controlled by the CPU, or controlled by additional players. In the stages, Kirby and his friends can collect Picture Pieces. These serve as optional collectable items which are used to complete Celebration Pictures.

The main Story Mode has Kirby and his friends traversing four main areas (with a fifth being a final boss level) and visiting stages in each area, unlocking them by clearing them in succession. Optional extra stages can also be unlocked by finding and pressing Big Switches in certain stages. These switches also unlock the Dream Palaces in each level, where Kirby can recruit the special Dream Friends if he so wishes.

Control

There are two control types to choose in the Control Options. Type A is the default one, and Type B resembles the control in Kirby Super Star.

If using a single Joy-Con, it must be placed horizontally: only the stick does the move control, the four round buttons (→/↓/↑/←) become A/B/X/Y respectively, and SL and SR function as L/R/ZL/ZR (L/R does nothing if using a single Joy-Con).

World Map

The Story Mode features a 3-dimensional world map similar to Super Mario 3D World, with Kirby controlled using the Control Stick or the directional buttons in World of Peace - Dream Land and Fortress of Shadows - Jambastion. In World of Miracles - Planet Popstar and Far-Flung Starlight Heroes, Kirby and friends are on a Warp Star instead, but are still controlled with the Control Stick or directional buttons. Both World of Peace - Dream Land and Far-Flung Starlight Heroes have collectible Point Stars on the map. Far-Flung Starlight Heroes is the only area in this game in which the player can control the camera themselves using the right Control Stick.

Modes

  • Story Mode - The main game, where the player plays as Kirby.
  • Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! - An Extra Game unlocked after Story Mode is completed, which consists of a time attack run through the main game levels as a Friend or Dream Friend other than Kirby himself. However, this mode could have been played with Kirby using a glitch prior to Ver.3.0.0.
  • The Ultimate Choice - A Boss Endurance mode, unlocked after Story Mode is completed, similar to The Arena with nine difficulty levels and a scoring mechanic.
  • Heroes in Another Dimension - A challenge mode added in Ver.4.0.0 unlocked after Story Mode is completed. Kirby and the allies set off for a new adventure in Another Dimension.
  • Chop Champs - A Sub-Game where Kirbys compete to log down trees as quickly as possible while avoiding caterpillars and Gordos at the same time.
  • Star Slam Heroes - A Sub-Game where Kirbys have to hit an asteroid with a baseball bat as far as they can.
  • Theater Room - Where the player can watch the movies from the cutscenes. Unlocked after watching the opening movie in Story Mode.
  • Jukebox - (サウンドルーム Sound Room in the Japanese version) Where the player can listen to the game music. Unlocked after Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! is completed. When a soundtrack is playing, the musical notes will change the color to indicate its composer, which was first used in Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Kirby: Planet Robobot:
    • Blue soundtracks are composed by Hirokazu Ando.
    • Red soundtracks are composed by Jun Ishikawa.
    • Yellow soundtracks are composed by Yuta Ogasawara, a new composer who joined HAL Laboratory in August 2017. Star Allies is the first Kirby video game that he has composed soundtracks for.

Levels & Stages

Kirby Star Allies features a total of 40 stages in the Story Mode, not counting the Ability Planet or the final boss level. Additionally, the Heroes in Another Dimension mode contains another 5 stages of extended length.

Levels in Story Mode
Level Nr. Name Stages Boss(es) Notes

Level 3 Fortress of Shadows - Jambastion 9
Level 4 Far-Flung Starlight Heroes 18 The first six planets can be played in any order. The Ability Planet and Extra Planet δ are unlocked after the game is completed.
Level 5 Kirby Star Allies 0 Void Termina Accessed by completing The Divine Terminus stage in Level 4.
Each level (except Level 5) also has an unlockable Dream Palace.

Heroes in Another Dimension - Dimension III Parallel Meta Knight 30
Heroes in Another Dimension - Dimension IV Parallel Dedede 30
Heroes in Another Dimension - Final Dimension Corrupt Hyness and The Three Mage-Sisters 0 (result of all Hearts that the player has collected)
Total Hearts:120

Unlike in previous Kirby games, the first letters of this game's five levels won't spell out something, however the first letters of every stage in World of Miracles: Planet Popstar does form a word. When the stages are followed in clockwise order and the Dream Palace is excluded, the first letters spell out the word "FRIENDS".

  • In the Spanish version, it spells out "AMISTAD" (friendship).
  • In the French version, it spells out "COPAINS" (friends).
  • In the Dutch version, it spells out "STERREN" (stars).
  • In the German version, it spells out "FSIENDR". It doesn't mean anything, but note that it would spell "FRIENDS" if the S and R were swapped around.
  • In the Italian version, it spells out "AMICONI" (buddies).
  • In the Chinese version, it spells out "卡比与新星同盟 (simplified) / 卡比與新星同盟 (traditional)" (Kirby and Star Allies).

On occasion, these cameo characters/objects/places appear on the world map's background. (Requires clearing Story Mode.)

Friend Abilities

In addition to standard Copy Abilities, Kirby and his Friends can combine their powers together to create combinations. This can be done in a number of different ways, as illustrated in the sections below.

Power Effects

Main article: Power Effect

Elemental enhancements can be applied to neutral-type Copy Abilities (typically those that resemble weapons). To do this, the weapon holder must raise their weapon, then the element wielder must use an elemental attack on the ally's weapon to imbue it. There are five power effects in total, as follows:

  • Blizzard - provided by ice-based attacks
  • Bluster - provided by wind-based attacks
  • Sizzle - provided by fire-based attacks
  • Splash - provided by water-based attacks
  • Zap - provided by electric-based attacks

Friend Combo Attacks

In addition to the above, there are special one-time moves which the Star Allies can perform by combining specific abilities together, or by simply having the allies involved. These abilities are as follows:

Friend Actions

Finally, there are five special formations which can only be used by finding a Friend Platform at various points in stages. These require four allies of any type to activate, and are as follows:

None This obscure enemy appears only twice in the game, and even then, only outside of Story Mode. It resembles the giant Bouncy from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards in how it operates, not posing a direct threat to Kirby and his friends, bouncing in place and requiring many hits to defeat, while smaller Bouncies spawn while the big one is still alive.

Suplex The original Beetle-like wrestler appears for the first time in 3-D. His moves are largely the same as before, though he also gains the ability to dive at Kirby from the sky, as well as use the Pinpoint Kick. He can become an ally once defeated.
Chef Kawasaki
File:Kawasaki Allies.png
Cook This infamous chef returns for the first time in 3-D. His attacks include throwing dishes, spinning through the air, and grabbing Kirby with his ladle to cook him up. He can be recruited as an ally once defeated.
Mr. Frosty

Ice The walrus in overalls strikes again, this time focusing more heavily on his charging attacks and acrobatics. Unlike the others, he cannot be made into an ally, being replaced by Chilly if he is hit by a Friend Heart once downed.

Artist The only newcomer of the bunch, this paintbrush-haired lass can float around the battlefield, and attacks by swiping with her hair, spraying paint around, and painting things to attack Kirby with. She can be made into an ally once defeated.
