Kirby Quest is a Sub-Game in Kirby Mass Attack, available in the Extras menu once 50 Medals have been obtained.

Kirby Quest takes place in chapters. In each chapter, Kirby is pitted against enemies in stages. To defeat these enemies, the player will have to make use of a meter which continuously moves up and down. Stopping this meter on a lit tile will allow Kirby to attack, with brighter tiles leading to stronger attacks. the player has 10 seconds to stop the meter or else Kirby will not be able to make a move. Defeating an enemy will yield experience points, which will add another Kirby to the team each time Kirby 'levels up', with the maximum being 10. Defeating enemies in less turns will reward Kirby with greater EXP.

The enemy will attack if the player misses on the meter. If the enemy is given an opportunity to attack, they can hurt one or more of the Kirbys, turning them blue and rendering them unable to fight. If all Kirbys become blue, the game is over. Kirbys can be healed by defeating certain foes, or performing some of the most powerful moves.

Attacks

Kirby can either do a Good, Great, or Awesome attack. While the Good and Great attacks deal different amounts of damage, Awesome attacks deal 100 damage for every pink Kirby. There are different animations for each attack; Good is general fighting moves, Great has Kirby using a Copy Ability, and Awesome references another Kirby or HAL Laboratory game. When an Awesome attack is performed, each blue Kirby is restored.

Good

  • A Kirby runs behind the enemies and bangs a red squeaky hammer on them. (20 damage per Kirby)
  • The Kirbys runs across the screen, kicking up dust. (20 damage per Kirby)
  • Each Kirby runs up to an enemy and uses Smash Punch. (20 damage for each Kirby attacking the enemy)
  • Each Kirby slams the ground as in Megaton Punch, causing a fissure near the enemies. (25 damage per Kirby)
  • Each Kirby runs up to an enemy and uses Spin Kick, striking three times. (30 damage per Kirby)

Great

  • Each Kirby turns into a Wheel and runs over the enemies. (40 damage per Kirby)
  • Each Kirby turns into a Tornado and spins near the enemies. (45 damage per Kirby)
  • Each Kirby shoots a laser towards the enemies. (50 damage per Kirby)
  • Each Kirby runs up to an enemy and hits it with a Hammer. (80 damage for each Kirby attacking the enemy)

Awesome

  • A Tankbot goes across the screen. It can randomly appear with its headlights on and regular arms, or with its headlights off and boxing glove arms.
  • A Kirby eats a Superspicy Curry and breathes fire on the enemies.
  • A Kirby rides a horde of 66 Gators.
  • Dyna Blade swoops down.
  • Kabuki Kirby fires a laser beam at the enemies.
  • A Kirby rides on a Moto Shotzo while being chased by a mechanical dragon with boxing gloves.
  • A Kirby wields the Galaxia and unleashes a devastating sword beam. This attack is only unlocked after defeating the Galaxia in Chapter 4, and is unique in which it deals 9999 damage.

Chapters

Each chapter consists of the following encounters:

Chapter 1

Chapter 2

Chapter 3

Chapter 4

A special stage exists in this chapter, against a giant Galaxia sword on its own, replacing Stage 39. To reach it, the player must hit only max power 'Awesome' moves on stages 31-38. Galaxia has 2500 HP and when defeated, will fall into Kirby's hands. Missing any attack against Galaxia, however, will cause it to vanish and Kirby will lose this opportunity. Taken to the last boss stage, if the player hits an 'Awesome' attack, Kirby will use Galaxia to deal 9999 damage. The game usually sets it up so the entire bar is pink and missing an 'Awesome' attack is near impossible.

References to other media

Kirby Quest contains many references to both obscure elements from the Kirby series and other games made by HAL Laboratory. These include the following:

  • The title screen is a direct reference to the 1992 video game Arcana, also produced by HAL Laboratory. Kirby Quest's Japanese and Korean name, "Kirby Master", is a reference to Arcana's own Japanese name, Card Master.
    • The game over screen is a direct reference to a scene from the opening of Arcana, with Dark Matter in place of the wizard Galneon. This scene was the same one in which Kirby made a cameo appearance a month before his official debut.
    • Two song names in the Japanese version also refer to Arcana: "Strongest Sword" (さいきょうのけん) is the name of the strongest available weapon (最強の剣, translated as "Giant Sword" in the English version), and "Time to Shine" (ひかりのときへ, Toward the Time of Light) is taken from the Japanese title of the final chapter (光の時へ…, translated as "Salvation" in the English version).
  • Several of Kirby's attacks reference more obscure material in the Kirby series. This includes Superspicy Curry, the Tankbot, the Kabuki ability, and Megaton Punch.
  • Max Flexer and Chef Shiitake - who make appearances in this Sub-Game - are both characters from Kirby: Right Back at Ya!. Escargoon and Captain Waddle Doo may also appear during one of King Dedede's attacks.
    • "Action Heaven", the song that plays in Max Flexer's battle, is titled エアロビてんごく (Aerobics Heaven) in Japanese, a reference to the lyrics of the song that he sings in the Japanese version of Fitness Fiend.
  • Dedede Robo's appearance in this sub-game marks its only appearance in a completed Kirby title. This giant robot was originally designed for the canceled Kirby for Nintendo GameCube game, and a similar-looking robot, HR-D3, would eventually appear in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.
  • One of Kirby's "Excellent" attacks calls on a horde of 66 Gators to attack the enemies. This is a reference to the Revenge of the 'Gator game (Japanese title: ピンボール66ひきのワニ大行進だいこうしん Pinball: The Great 66-Alligator Parade), which is also produced by HAL Laboratory.
  • Another "Excellent" attack has Kirby ride a Moto Shotzo while being chased by a mechanical dragon with boxing gloves, which highly resembles a boss from the HAL Laboratory game Trax. Moto Shotzo itself greatly resembles Trax's main protagonist.

Trivia

  • Perfect scores for each Chapter are as follows:
    • Chapter 1: 10000 EXP
    • Chapter 2: 15000 EXP
    • Chapter 3: 20000 EXP
    • Chapter 4: 30000 EXP
  • The default high score for each Chapter is exactly half of its respective perfect score.
