Kirby: Triple Deluxe is a game released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2014 and serves as the tenth main series Kirby game (not including remakes). It is a 2.5-D platformer with a special mechanic that allows Kirby and other characters to change to and interact with different planes, thus adding limited three-dimensional interactivity to the gameplay. In addition, the game makes use of the 3DS's built-in motion controls for certain gameplay elements, including tilt bowls, 3D Tilt Missiles, and Tilt Gondolas. Finally, the game marks the debut (and only) appearance of the Hypernova ability, which drastically enhances the power and reach of Kirby's signature inhale.

This title also heavily features King Dedede, giving him his own Sub-Game and Extra Mode, as well as involving him prominently in the main story.

The main story of Kirby: Triple Deluxe takes place in the sky-bound kingdom of Floralia. Kirby is brought up to this kingdom when a giant plant called the Dreamstalk lifts his house into the air. Castle Dedede is also lifted up, from which a strange arachnid mage named Taranza is seen kidnapping its king. Kirby gives chase after them through the six major islands of Floralia, dealing with many large enemies which Taranza summons or aggravates to slow Kirby down. As Kirby ascends, he collects Sun Stones to grow the Dreamstalk further, giving him a bridge to each island in turn. He also encounters a number of Miracle Fruits which grants him the powerful Hypernova ability when consumed. At the highest island - Royal Road - Kirby finds and frees a number of imprisoned flower sprites who are known as the People of the Sky.

After waking up on a Dream Land morning, Kirby lets out a hearty yawn as a butterfly lands on his face. Later in the day, he goes "fishing" for Blippers, flies with some birds, takes a nap under an apple tree, and rides on the Warp Star over the Orange Ocean. That night, as Kirby is sleeping in his house, a mysterious beanstalk, known as the Dreamstalk, lifts Kirby's house into the air. Kirby yawns once more after he wakes up, only to be interrupted by the sight of his house in the sky. In a panic, he rushes out of the house and falls onto Castle Dedede, which he finds has also been lifted up into the sky. He storms the castle after finding a mysterious arachnid-like creature called Taranza sneaking inside. King Dedede commands his Waddle Dees to stop Taranza, but they are all overpowered by him. He kidnaps the king and Kirby chases him up the Dreamstalk to the floating kingdom of Floralia.

Floralia consists of six floating islands, each at a higher elevation than the last. They are, in ascending order: Fine Fields, Lollipop Land, Old Odyssey, Wild World, Endless Explosions and Royal Road. Kirby must traverse each one so he may help the Dreamstalk grow to the next in pursuit of Taranza and King Dedede. At the end of each island, Kirby catches up with Taranza, so he uses his magic to make five seemingly inanimate or dormant creatures come to life to distract Kirby, one on each island before Royal Road: Flowery Woods is created from a flower, Paintra is awakened from a painting, Kracko is remade from a cloud, Coily Rattler is awakened from a snake statue, and Pyribbit is aggravated. Kirby battles through these monsters, then finally reaches Royal Road. There, he encounters and frees the People of the Sky, who assist him in reaching Taranza's castle.
Once Kirby finally catches up to Taranza at the palace atop Royal Road, the arachnid mage explains how it was his objective to capture the hero of Dream Land in order to stop him messing up his and his queen's plans for domination. He then uses his magic to take control of King Dedede and have him fight Kirby while wearing a familiar mask. Kirby defeats Dedede and breaks the spell, making it clear who the real hero of Dream Land actually is. At this realization, Taranza calls upon Queen Sectonia to save him, but the furious queen instead swats him away for his failures. From there, Kirby and the queen do battle.

Taranza scolds Kirby for following him, and then reveals that he is truly only the second-in-command to the true ruler of Floralia, Queen Sectonia, and that the People of the Sky (whom Kirby rescued during his adventure) planted the Dreamstalk to get the hero of Dream Land to stop Taranza and the Queen. He then turns King Dedede (whom he mistook for the hero of Dream Land) into Masked Dedede, and Kirby fights him. After Kirby overpowers them--twice, Taranza summons Queen Sectonia, a giant regal-looking wasp, in a last-ditch attempt to stop Kirby. The Queen angrily swats Taranza away for his failure to abduct the true hero of Dream Land and expresses the desire to rule both Dream Land along with Floralia. She fights Kirby for wanting to stand against her and save Dedede.
Queen Sectonia is overpowered by Kirby, and forced to retreat, using her magic to merge with the Dreamstalk, thus beginning the process of draining Floralia and the rest of planet Popstar of all its energy. King Dedede regains consciousness, and with the help of the freed People of the Sky, launches Kirby toward the main stalk of the now Flowered Sectonia. They fight until the sun comes up, but just as Kirby is about to seize victory, the queen ensnares him with a vine and begins to squeeze him. At this, King Dedede and Taranza (with a change of heart) come to Kirby's rescue, freeing him and giving him one more Miracle Fruit to use against the queen. Kirby finishes off Flowered Sectonia by inhaling her giant laser blast and spitting it back out at her, destroying her utterly. This done, Kirby is ferried back home by the People of the Sky, and the Dreamstalk is purified, going into full bloom and becoming a permanent fixture of Dream Land.

Kirby defeats her, but she flies away and combines her power with the Dreamstalk, covering all of Pop Star with vines. Dedede and the People of the Sky reappear and build a cannon for Kirby to follow her. Kirby then fights her, in her Dreamstalk form, but she still survives the battle and tries to choke Kirby with her vines. Suddenly, Dedede, hanging on to a reformed Taranza, work together to free Kirby and give him a Miracle Fruit, turning him into Hypernova Kirby. They clash once more, as Kirby sucks away the Queen's flowery arms, then absorbs a beam that she fires in a last ditch attempt to defeat him. Sapped of her remaining strength, the Queen looks on in despair as Kirby, puffed up and with a determined glare, finishes the job by firing the beam back at Sectonia, vaporizing her and liberating the Dreamstalk.

The Queen is finally destroyed, but Kirby is sent tumbling down Floralia. The People of the Sky catch Kirby, while Taranza barely catches Dedede. They all enjoy Dream Land's latest landmark, the Dreamstalk, as it enters full bloom.

In Dededetour!, King Dedede decides to explore Floralia himself. After defeating Queen Sectonia DX, Sectonia's Mirror World counterpart, at Royal Road, he fights his own Mirror World self, and then enters the Dimension Mirror to fight Dark Meta Knight. He then destroys the mirror to prevent them from coming back. It is unknown how the king himself returns.

However, in the finale of The True Arena, Sectonia managed to barely grasp onto life by eating some Miracle Fruits herself, becoming Soul of Sectonia. Kirby fights her once more, and finally kills her after she forcefully rips herself off of the Dreamstalk for a final stand.

This game plays very similarly to its predecessor, Kirby's Return to Dream Land. It even has several of the same items, such as the Key. It introduces a new move, the Dodge. This is activated by pressing left or right while using the Guard, or pressing L or R in midair to perform an Air Dodge. This move isn't usually necessary in the Main Game, and is only truly useful in Kirby Fighters. However, the main new gameplay element is the foreground and background.
This game plays very similarly to its predecessor, Kirby's Return to Dream Land. It even has several of the same Copy Abilities and items, such as the Key. However, the main new gameplay element is the divide between the foreground and the background.

In Kirby: Triple Deluxe Kirby is no longer limited to just one path. He is required to use special 3-D Warpstars to move from the foreground to the background, and vice versa. While in one plane realMe can see items and enemies in the other. Sometimes Kirby even gains weapons that let him directly attack the enemies in the other plane, such as the 3-D Laser Bar, and the 3-D Helmet Cannon. The enemies can do the same, with some enemies such as Sir Kibble and Spynum able to launch their projectiles into the other plane. Enemies such as Waddle Dee and Chip can jump from one plane to the other to ambush Kirby. There are also many obstacles that attack Kirby from the background or foreground, such as boulders, mineral pillars, trees, and springy hands. There are also several cases where Kirby may get launched forward and hit the screen, sliding downward afterwards. This doesn't necessarily cost Kirby a life, but it will always make him lose his Copy Ability, if he had one.

Enemies such as Waddle Dee and Chip can jump from one plane to the other to ambush Kirby.

The game contains many collectibles. A primary example are the Keychains. They are 256 of these scattered throughout the levels. Each one depicts a pixelated sprite of an enemy, item, or character from the previous main path Kirby games (except Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, as the game uses 3D models). When you pick up a Keychain in one of the levels, the item on it will be revealed after the Goal Game. The image you get is random, and it is possible to get the same Keychain on an image twice or more. There are also Rare Golden Keychains. These are found in a fixed location, one in each level. They are not random. The other collectibles are the Sun Stones, which serve a similar function to the Energy Spheres from Kirby's Return to Dream Land. There are a set amount of Sun Stones in each level and 100 available total. Most are hidden in secret rooms, some are in plain sight, others are hidden in chests. A certain amount of these are required to unlock the Boss Stage. If you collect all the Sun Stones in a level you will unlock a bonus EX level. These stages are slightly longer, but contain few Sun Stones, and end with a battle against a DX Mid-Boss. There are also Grand Sun Stones, that are obtained after defeating the boss of a level. These give access to the next level, and it is necessary to collect all five of them. If Kirby collects all 100 Sun Stones, he will be rewarded with a Rare Queen Sectonia Keychain.
There are also many obstacles that attack Kirby from the background or foreground, such as rolling boulders, falling pillars or trees, and extending Springy Hands. In some instances, Kirby may get launched forward and hit the "screen", sliding downward afterward. This doesn't necessarily cost Kirby a life (as long as he is not low on stamina), but it will always make him lose his Copy Ability if he had one.

This game is the first to feature Gyro-Controls. This has realMe tilting the 3DS system to accomplish tasks. These may involve tilting a bowl of water, setting the direction for a cannon to fire, or traveling over a pit in a gondola, and are usually required to get a Keychain. There is also a Game Mode that allows the player to play as King Dedede. His controls are also mostly the same as in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, but now he can create a shock-wave with his hammer at full health, and launch a cutting beam from his hammer when charged.
Aside from this, the game introduces a new standard move, the Dodge. This is activated by pressing any direction while using the Guard, or pressing L or R in midair to perform an Air Dodge. While dodging, Kirby is completely invincible against enemy attacks for a brief moment. This is an especially handy technique in boss fights to avoid taking damage that the standard Guard would not block. However, it is not usually necessary to use in the Main Game; the move is more useful in The Arena, The True Arena, and Kirby Fighters.

Modes
The game contains many collectibles. A primary example is Keychains. There are 256 of these scattered throughout the levels. Each one depicts a pixelated sprite of a character or object from previous Kirby games. The specific Keychains that the player collected are not revealed until after the Goal Game. Keychains are randomly determined, and it is possible to get the same Keychain more than once. There are also Rare Keychains, which are golden. These are found in fixed locations, one in each stage. They are not random; each stage has its own unique Rare Keychain that usually depicts a more significant character or object than the standard Keychains.
Story Mode: Play as Kirby in the main story.

Kirby Fighters: Fight using multiple Copy Abilities against other Kirbys on multiple stages. This is similar to Super Smash Bros., though it utilizes a more traditional health system for its combatants.
The other main collectibles are the Sun Stones, which serve a similar function to the Energy Spheres from Kirby's Return to Dream Land. There are a set amount of Sun Stones in each level and 100 available total. Most are hidden in secret rooms; some are in plain sight, others are hidden in chests. Kirby is required to collect a certain amount of them to access the boss of each level. If all of the Sun Stones in a level are collected, a bonus EX stage is unlocked. These stages are slightly longer and more difficult, contain few Sun Stones, and end with a battle against a DX Mid-Boss. There are also Grand Sun Stones, which are obtained after defeating the boss of a level. These give access to the next level, and it is necessary to collect all five of them. If Kirby collects all 100 Sun Stones, he will be rewarded with a Rare Queen Sectonia Keychain.

Dedede's Drum Dash: Play as King Dedede in a rhythm game in which the king bounces on drums.
This game makes moderate use of tilt-based motion controls, having the player tilt the Nintendo 3DS system to accomplish certain tasks. These may involve tilting a bowl of water, setting the direction for a Tilt Cannon to fire, or traveling over a pit in a Tilt Gondola. These tasks are usually optional, but may reward Kirby with a Keychain or Sun Stone.

The Arena: Play as Kirby and fight mid-bosses and bosses.
There is also an additional mode titled Dededetour! that allows the player to play as King Dedede. His controls are mostly the same as in Kirby's Return to Dream Land (and, consequently, the Hammer copy ability), but with some new upgrades. He can create a shockwave with his hammer at full health, akin to the Sword ability, and launch a cutting beam from his hammer when charged, akin to the new Archer ability. Dedede Hammer Flip and Hammer Twirl retain their previous ability to light things on fire, while Giant Dedede Swing now has wind properties that can put out flames; this allows Dedede to tackle most elemental puzzles that Kirby would require different abilities for.

The True Arena: This is the harder version of "The Arena," with old bosses in DX forms as well as new bosses.
Hypernova
Hypernova
Newly introduced in Kirby: Triple Deluxe is a special ability known as Hypernova. This ability is not obtained from any enemies and is instead acquired when Kirby touches a Miracle Fruit. Hypernova causes Kirby to shimmer in all colors of the rainbow and causes his mouth to glow white. He gains an extremely powerful inhale which can uproot and absorb things much more massive than Kirby himself. Kirby can use this ability to tear apart obstacles and move large objects, as well as inhale giant enemies. He can also move backward and forward while inhaling, but not when he has his mouth full. The Hypernova ability overrides any standard Copy Ability Kirby may have and will wear off once the stage is completed, returning Kirby's original ability to him. It cannot be discarded before this point unless the player quits the stage early.

Dededetour!: Play through all six Story Mode levels as King Dedede in one long time attack run, defeating harder bosses in the process.

|Kirby, pink and puffy as ever, takes on the world of Floralia with his usual set of skills and determination. After having his home uprooted by the Dreamstalk and seeing King Dedede kidnapped by a strange villain, Kirby gives chase, encountering many obstacles along the way but also making use of the new Hypernova power to suck up the more stubborn roadblocks. He eventually catches up with Dedede's kidnapper and proceeds to free him along with the imprisoned People of the Sky, and with their help, he defeats the vain and power-mad Queen Sectonia to free the kingdom of Floralia and save Dream Land as well.

*Against Flowered Sectonia, Dark Meta Knight's Revenge and Soul of Sectonia, Crash and Mike's actual damage = Base Power × 0.33
*Most bosses have 75% maximum HP when fought in The Arena and The True Arena (rounded down to zero decimal places).
*Soul of Sectonia has 1,332 base HP for Phase 1 and 600 for Phase 2, but because she is only fought in The True Arena, her actual HP for both phases is effectively 999 and 450, respectively.

Trivia
*The title of Kirby: Triple Deluxe has multiple meanings. Initially, the developers wished to have a title that would convey the idea of an adventure on floating islands, but instead decided on the final title due to it being short and catchy, easily understood worldwide, and emphasizing the game's use of the Nintendo 3DS's features. It can be compressed to "3D", which emphasizes the 3D elements of the game, as well as King Dedede's prominence ("Dedede" is three "D"s). It can also be read as "3DX", which incorporates "X" — 10 in Roman numbers — since this game is the tenth traditional Kirby platformer. Lastly, it references the Japanese title of Kirby Super Star, Kirby Super Deluxe.
*The "FLOWERED" spelling used for the first letters of each level and in the ending cutscene is referenced in the Kirby 30th Anniversary artwork for tagline #12, where Kirby is wearing a flower reminiscent of the one on the Dreamstalk.
*The Japanese and European box arts have one of the cutter blades thrown by Sir Kibble and the thin floor at the bottom-right corner breaking out of the frame, while they are contained within the frame in the North American and Korean box arts. The North American box arts also do not have the cannonball fired by the Shotzo, or even the Shotzo itself.
*This game was the first to have an on-screen HUD break the fourth wall under specific circumstances: when Hypernova Kirby inhales a boss, its health bar "peels" off the screen before being inhaled alongside it.
*The Latin script logo for this game features the Kirby series logo in yellow with a blue outline, with the yellow part referencing the Hypernova ability, and said colors were used for Latin script logos of later mainline Kirby games. These two colors are the same used for the Japanese logos of the mainline games since Kirby Super Star (with the exception of Kirby: Squeak Squad; Kirby & The Amazing Mirror uses the same colors, but fittingly reversed).

Story[edit]

Gameplay[edit]

One of the core features of Kirby: Triple Deluxe is Kirby's brand-new Hypernova ability, which significantly powers up his inhale, allowing him to swallow just about anything.

This game plays very similarly to its predecessor, Kirby's Return to Dream Land. It even has several of the same Copy Abilities and items, such as the Key. However, the main new gameplay element is the divide between the foreground and the background.

In Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Kirby is no longer limited to just one path. He is now able, and often required, to use special 3D Warp Stars to move from the foreground to the background, and vice versa. While in one plane, the player can see items and enemies in the other. Sometimes, Kirby even gains weapons that let him directly attack the enemies in the other plane, such as the 3D Laser Bar, and the 3D Helmet Cannon. The enemies can do the same, with some enemies such as Sir Kibble and Spynum able to launch their projectiles into the other plane. Enemies such as Waddle Dee and Chip can jump from one plane to the other to ambush Kirby.

Hypernova[edit]

Artwork of Hypernova Kirby.
Main article: Hypernova

Characters[edit]

Characters in Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Character Role
Protagonists
Although he spends most of the story unconscious after being kidnapped by Taranza, King Dedede plays a pivotal role helping Kirby defeat Queen Sectonia after he is freed from Taranza's puppetry: both manning the cannon that fires Kirby into the final confrontation and using his hammer to free Kirby from Flowered Sectonia's snare. In Dededetour!, King Dedede takes the leading role, and defeats all of the villains himself, including a surprise enemy at the very end.
Residents of Floralia who resemble flowers and can fly through the air. They are imprisoned shortly after Queen Sectonia comes to power, and were responsible for sending down the seed of the Dreamstalk to call forth a hero from Dream Land to help them. When Kirby reaches Royal Road, he frees the People of the Sky, and they help him move forward in various ways, then show up to help Kirby and Dedede defeat Flowered Sectonia.
Although not playing a role in the story, Bandana Waddle Dee shows up in the background at regular intervals to toss Kirby and King Dedede Assist Stars to help them out.
Villains
A spider-like mage who is responsible for kidnapping King Dedede at the start of the game, assuming him to be the hero of Dream Land which the People of the Sky tried to call for. He tries to thwart Kirby's progress several times by throwing bosses at him, but Kirby eventually catches up and foils his attempt to puppet King Dedede against him. When Taranza realized he got the wrong hero, he tries to call for the aid of his Queen Sectonia, but she swats him away for his failures. When Taranza later sees what Queen Sectonia has become, he switches sides and helps Dedede save Kirby.
A power-mad vain queen of insects who was corrupted by staring into the Dimension Mirror. She attempts to take control of Floralia, but is thwarted by Kirby and King Dedede, who foil her plans to merge with the Dreamstalk and turn Popstar into her sustenance.
Exclusively in Dededetour!, Dark Meta Knight emerges as the surprise final opponent for King Dedede to deal with, under the moniker of Dark Meta Knight's Revenge. He is found inside the Dimension Mirror which had corrupted Queen Sectonia.

Modes[edit]

 • Story Mode: Play as Kirby in the main story.
 • Kirby Fighters: Fight using multiple Copy Abilities against other Kirbys on multiple stages. This is similar to Super Smash Bros., though it utilizes a more traditional health system for its combatants and has no bottomless pits.
 • Dedede's Drum Dash: Play as King Dedede in a rhythm game in which the king bounces on drums.
 • The Arena: Play as Kirby and fight mid-bosses and bosses.
 • The True Arena: This is the harder version of "The Arena," with old bosses in DX forms as well as new bosses.
 • Dededetour!: Play through all six Story Mode levels as King Dedede in one long time attack run, defeating harder bosses in the process.

Copy Abilities[edit]

Kirby: Triple Deluxe features a total of 25 standard Copy Abilities, with four of them being brand new abilities. Like Kirby's Return to Dream Land, these abilities feature extensive movesets and most offer high versatility.

Enemies fought using Hypernova[edit]

Hypernova-specific enemies in Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Name Image Description Notes
Ace Phanta KTD Ace Fuwa Rover.png A large bearded ghost with a wizard's hat, who can be found hiding inside suits of armor in the background. Kirby can expose them by dodging the armor's attack, then initiating his inhale.
Big Missile KTD Big Missile.png A large metallic missile that slightly resembles a shark and flies slowly forward. Kirby can inhale it and spit it back using Hypernova. If it collides with another missile or its launcher, point stars and food will drop.

On the other side is a glowing light which if hit by the retaliated missile, will destroy the cannon. Can be found individually or stacked on top of each other, and may also shoot out a long spiked bar instead of a missile.
Land Barbar KTD Land Barbar.png A very long red eel similar to Barbar who inhabits pipes out on dry land. After an attempted bite, its star-tipped tongue sticks out briefly, giving Kirby the opportunity to use his Hypernova to swallow the giant eel in its entirety.
Lollipop Tank KTD Lollipop Tank.png
KTD Sectra Tank.png
A large tank piloted by one or more Waddle Dees which rolls along the background and fires continuous volleys at Kirby. It is capable of breaking heavy stone and metal blocks which it drives into, though it is impeded by other obstacles. Its volleys are also capable of breaking such blocks. It can be dropped into the bottomless pit to defeat it, or can be inhaled using Hypernova. Also has a variety piloted by Sectra Dees called the Sectra Tank.
Pipe Worm KTD Pipe Worm.png A large spiky worm that resides inside of hollowed logs. It will attempt to bite at Kirby if he gets close but regularly switches its orientation. If Kirby uses Hypernova against the tail side, he can inhale the worm to defeat it.
Waddle Dee Train KTD Waddle Dee Train.png A large train that follows a track in from the background, crossing at regular intervals. If it hits Kirby, he will be flung into the fourth wall. Kirby can inhale the train with Hypernova, eating it piece-by-piece.

Mid-Bosses[edit]

Note: More powerful Deluxe forms of these mid-bosses, which have "DX" appended to the ends of their names, appear at various points throughout Story Mode; in Dededetour!, all mid-bosses are battled in their DX forms.

Notes:
 • The basic Star Bullet has 52 Base Power. Star Bullet's actual damage = Base Power × (0.5 + 0.5 × Boss Defense Modifier)
 • Copy Ability's actual damage = Base Power × Boss Defense Modifier
 • Masked Dedede becomes Masked Dedede's Revenge when his HP is 55% or lower.
 • Against Flowered Sectonia, Dark Meta Knight's Revenge and Soul of Sectonia, Crash and Mike's actual damage = Base Power × 0.33
 • Most bosses have 75% maximum HP when fought in The Arena and The True Arena (rounded down to zero decimal places).
 • Soul of Sectonia has 1,332 base HP for Phase 1 and 600 for Phase 2, but because she is only fought in The True Arena, her actual HP for both phases is effectively 999 and 450, respectively.

Trivia[edit]

This particular piece of art from the Kirby 30th Anniversary set references the first letters of each level in Kirby: Triple Deluxe.
 • The title of Kirby: Triple Deluxe has multiple meanings. It can also be read as "3DX", which incorporates "X" — 10 in Roman numbers — since this game is the tenth traditional Kirby platformer.[2] Lastly, it references the Japanese title of Kirby Super Star, Kirby Super Deluxe.
 • The "FLOWERED" spelling used for the first letters of each level and in the ending cutscene is referenced in the Kirby 30th Anniversary artwork for tagline #12, where Kirby is wearing a flower reminiscent of the one on the Dreamstalk.
 • The Japanese and European box arts have one of the cutter blades thrown by Sir Kibble and the thin floor at the bottom-right corner breaking out of the frame, while they are contained within the frame in the North American and Korean box arts. The North American box arts also do not have the cannonball fired by the Shotzo, or even the Shotzo itself.
 • This game was the first to have an on-screen HUD break the fourth wall under specific circumstances: when Hypernova Kirby inhales a boss, its health bar "peels" off the screen before being inhaled alongside it.
 • The Latin script logo for this game features the Kirby series logo in yellow with a blue outline, with the yellow part referencing the Hypernova ability, and said colors were used for Latin script logos of later mainline Kirby games. These two colors are the same used for the Japanese logos of the mainline games since Kirby Super Star (with the exception of Kirby: Squeak Squad; Kirby & The Amazing Mirror uses the same colors, but fittingly reversed).
