Kirby: Planet Robobot is a game in the Kirby series released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2016. It uses the same engine and playstyle as preceding games Kirby: Triple Deluxe and KRDL KAW, and once again incorporates the use of jumping between foreground and background, as Triple Deluxe did.

Kirby: Planet Robobot is the eleventh game in the main Kirby series, released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2016. The central theme of this game revolves around robotic and futuristic industrial settings, as Kirby's home planet Popstar has been taken over by an enterprising intergalactic alien business called the Haltmann Works Company. Kirby needs to venture through his mechanized planet and fight off the invaders by turning their technology against them, making use of a new power-expanding robotic suit called the Robobot Armor. In the process, Kirby fights and then frees Meta Knight - who had been captured and mechanized by the company - and then eventually defeats the company and their mother computer with his help.

Kirby: Planet Robobot uses the same engine and general play-style as preceding games Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Kirby's Return to Dream Land, and once again incorporates the use of jumping between foreground and background, as Kirby: Triple Deluxe did. Like Kirby: Triple Deluxe, the game features two extensive Sub-Games - this time in the form of Team Kirby Clash and Kirby 3D Rumble - and also features an Extra Mode called Meta Knightmare Returns. A free demo version of the game was released where the first two stages of the game's Story Mode can be played, before the demo was made unavailable for download following the closure of Nintendo eShop on March 27, 2023.

A robotic organization known as the Haltmann Works Company has targeted Popstar for its industrialization purposes. They fly down a giant spaceship roughly the same size as Pop Star to take over, as both King Dedede and Meta Knight try in vain to stop them. Kirby wakes up from under an oak tree to see the damage done, and is tasked with stopping the invaders from completely mechanizing his homeworld.

Kirby busts his way through each area, damaging the five legs that prop up the Haltmann Works Mothership: the Access Ark. Along the way, he encounters Susie - Executive Assistant - who antagonizes him both by fighting him directly, and by throwing subdued and/or cloned versions of his friends after him. Once all five legs of the Access Ark are down, Kirby enters the ship itself, and battles with the primary villain behind this plot, President Haltmann. In the process, he discovers that all of this was made possible for Haltmann Works by a self-aware supercomputer known as Star Dream.

When Haltmann is defeated by Kirby, he attempts to use Star Dream to exact revenge, but then Susie betrays him, stealing his means of controlling the computer and causing him to black out. Susie then reveals that she wanted to take control of the computer for herself, but Star Dream then activates by itself and zaps Susie away. At this point, the computer is fully in control, fusing Haltmann's mind and soul with its operating system, and declares that it will erase all of history in order to bring about an age of 'infinite prosperity'.

Begrudgingly, Susie helps Kirby to defeat it by offering him a suit of Robobot Armor. Meta Knight, having been freed by Kirby from the company's clutches, brings the Halberd in as well, and merges it with Kirby's armor in order to take down Star Dream, who turns out to be another variety of Nova. Once it is finally defeated, Popstar is returned to normal, and Susie leaves Popstar behind on her own, departing to parts unknown.

Gameplay
Kirby: Planet Robobot plays more-or-less the same as Kirby: Triple Deluxe, as a 2.5-D platformer, with paths in the foreground and background, and levels with stages to complete sequentially. Also as before, Kirby will need to collect a number of special objects in order to unlock the path to the Boss in each level, and/or unlock extra stages. Kirby makes use of his Copy Abilities as usual to solve puzzles and break his way through the enemy forces, many of which are mechanized versions of the usual enemies.

New to this installation, however, is the inclusion of a suit of power armor that Kirby can pilot, called the Robobot Armor. It appears in various points of the stages, and allows Kirby to smash his way through larger obstacles, though it comes with some drawbacks in most instances, the most obvious one being the inability to float indefinitely. The suit is also modular with some of the Copy Abilities, taking on new form and function with each one.

On top of this new mechanic, Planet Robobot features more enemies, new and different items and tools, and new and different Copy Abilities to utilize. It also employs circular pathways in some areas, not seen since Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, and flying shooter sections reminiscent of the endgame for Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

Like in Triple Deluxe, Kirby is able to store certain Food items for later use. These can be improved through the use of StreetPass. Additionally, the game is compatible with amiibo, which allow Kirby to obtain a Copy Ability from one when scanned.

Among the abilities he can get from these are special costume variants of Hammer, Sword, and Parasol, as well as the long-lost abilities Smash Bros. and UFO, which are otherwise carefully hidden inside the game itself.

This game is also compatible with amiibo, coming with its own set as well. Scanning in an amiibo will give Kirby a Copy Ability specific to the amiibo scanned, as well as the home set unlocking special costumes. Scanning the Super Smash Bros. Kirby amiibo will unlock the Smash ability (now called Smash Bros.), and scanning the home series Kirby amiibo will unlock the U.F.O. ability, which is the only easy way to obtain it.

Introduced in this title is the potent Robobot Armor, which in turn is compatible with various Copy Abilities. The Robobot Armor is obtained by defeating Invader Armor or by finding it in stages. When inside the armor, Kirby becomes much more powerful, but in most cases, loses his ability to hover indefinitely and can no longer fit through tight gaps. Kirby will retain any ability he had before entering the armor and it will not affect the abilities that the armor can acquire. Kirby cannot exit the armor once he enters unless he finds a docking station or exits the stage.

The first letter of each area, when put in order, spells out a word related to the game, much like in some of the previous Kirby games.
*The Japanese, English, French and Korean versions spell out "PROGRAM," hinting at the final boss.
*The Italian version has the first letter of the first word in each area name spell out "SISTEMA" (translating to "system" in Italian) and the first letter of the later words in each area name spelling out "PROGRAMMA" (translating to "program" in Italian), both of which hint at the final boss in much the same way.
*The Spanish version spells out "PROCESO" (translating to "process" in Spanish), which again hints at the final boss.
*The German version spells out "ROBOBOT," in relation to both the game title and the Robobot Armor.

|Kirby takes the role of the main hero and playable character as usual. In order to stop Haltmann Works from mechanizing his homeworld, Kirby takes control of one of their robotic suits and uses it to help him blast his way through Haltmann's employees and robotic creations. Kirby is ultimately successful at this task, when - with Meta Knight's help - he destroys the company's Mother Computer Star Dream, thus undoing all its work.

* King Dedede
|The masked swordsman takes a prominent role in the main story when, in his initial attempt to repulse Haltmann Works' invasion using the Halberd, he is shot down, captured, and mechanized by the company, being mind-controlled in the process. Kirby faces down this mechanized version of Meta Knight twice, finally freeing him from the company's grasp after the second fight. From there, Meta Knight collects the Halberd and uses it to help Kirby defeat Star Dream. In Meta Knightmare Returns, Meta Knight takes the role of the main player character, and defeats Haltmann Works by himself, facing a familiar set of warriors at the end.

|The Executive Assistant of Haltmann Works Company and the daughter of President Haltmann, though he doesn't seem to recognize her as such anymore. Susie tries several times to thwart Kirby's progress by battling him directly and sending various powerful foes at him fabricated by the Mother Computer. When this fails, she later tries to sabotage President Haltmann when he tries to use Star Dream against Kirby, that apparently having been her plan this whole time. When the sabotage doesn't go as expected, however, and Haltmann is merged with the computer, Susie reluctantly helps Kirby fight it by giving him one last suit of Robobot Armor to use.

|The sedentary egg-shaped president of Haltmann Works Company and its namesake. Max Profitt Haltmann uses Star Dream to pursue his ambition of taking over the universe and industrializing everything, but in the process, the computer gradually robs him of his memories, including those of his own daughter who had been lost in an experiment-gone-wrong. When Kirby defeats him in open combat, President Haltmann tries to activate the computer one more time, but due to Susie's sabotage, his mind is melded with that of the computer's, and any remaining traces of his identity are erased by the cold machine. President Haltmann is presumed not to have survived when Kirby destroys Star Dream.

|<br>Star Dream
|A sentient (albeit incomplete) computer from ancient times that is repurposed by the Haltmann Works Company to serve their needs. Star Dream eventually assumes full control when it melds minds with President Haltmann and erases his identity, thereafter declaring its intentions to erase the universe's life-forms to ensure "infinite prosperity". Kirby and Meta Knight team up and take a fusion of the Halberd and Robobot Armor to fight Star Dream out in space, where it reveals itself to be related to the Galactic Nova from Kirby Super Star during the battle. Kirby and Meta Knight eventually gain the upper hand and drive a giant drill through the machine, destroying it utterly and undoing much of its work.

Immediately upon being summoned, Galacta Knight slashes Star Dream and then engages in combat with Meta Knight. |King Dedede does not play a significant role in Kirby: Planet Robobot, and is only seen in the opening and ending cutscenes for the game. At some point, it is suggested that Haltmann Works stole Dedede's genes to create a clone of him, which they send after Kirby.

Kirby: Planet Robobot carries a majority of its enemies - including their look and behavior - from its predecessor; Kirby: Triple Deluxe. However, the game also adds a large array of new enemies, and brings back many older enemies not featured in Triple Deluxe, with some (such as Simirror) making their first 3-D appearance in this game. True to the mechanized motif of the world in Planet Robobot, many enemies have received mechanical and/or cybernetic augmentations, though these are purely cosmetic. ==Soundtrack==
Jukebox
The Jukebox (サウンドルーム Sound Room in the Japanese version) serves as the Sound Test of Kirby: Planet Robobot. When a soundtrack is playing, the musical notes will change the color to indicate its composer:
*Blue soundtracks are composed by Hirokazu Ando.
*Red soundtracks are composed by Jun Ishikawa.
This way of indicating the track credit was first used in Kirby: Triple Deluxe and would be later used in Kirby Star Allies.

Kirby: Planet Robobot Original Soundtrack
Kirby: Planet Robobot Original Soundtrack CD was released on Dec 15, 2016 only in Japan. It's a 2-CD set that includes 97 tracks from the game.

The digital version was released on June 26, 2018 worldwide, being the first time Planet Robobot Soundtrack was released in English.

Kirby: Planet Robobot was originally planned as a follow up to Kirby: Triple Deluxe, being referred to as Kirby: Triple Deluxe 2. Once it was decided that the game's theme would revolve around mechanization and industrialization, the name was changed to Kirby: HAGANE (hagane means "steel" in Japanese). The title went through a few more changes, Kirby: Robot Planet, Roborobo Planet, and finally, Planet Robobot, to keep with the playfulness of the Kirby universe. From the finalized title, the Robobot Armor got its name.

Development
Nintendo eShop description
Kirby: Planet Robobot was originally planned as a follow up to Kirby: Triple Deluxe, known as Kirby: Triple Deluxe 2. Once it was decided that the game's theme would revolve around mechanization and industrialization, the name was changed to Kirby: HAGANE (hagane means "steel" in Japanese). The title went through a few more changes, Kirby: Robot Planet, Roborobo Planet, and finally, Planet Robobot. From the finalized title, the Robobot Armor got its name.
Harness the power of a mysterious mech to stop ruthless invaders from mechanizing Kirby's home world. Smash through tough obstacles, lift heavy objects with ease, and scan enemies to shape-shift into new Modes with powerful abilities in this supercharged action-platformer!

That's right—Kirby's Robobot Armor can shape-shift into different modes by scanning enemies to copy their moves—like the new Jet Mode. Not to mention, Kirby™ can copy abilities the old-fashioned way too—by inhaling them! After saving the world, team up with three friends to defeat foes in Team Kirby Clash, an RPG-styled 4-player brawl where you choose from varied roles and level them up.

Trivia
Trivia
*The internal code name for Kirby: Planet Robobot is "Torte", a type of cake, matching with previous food-related project names such as "Donut" and "Parufe" (parfait). It is also referred to in some press material as "TorteCity". Before the game was officially revealed, it was leaked through Nintendo's internal 2016 marketing budget under the name "Torte City".

To save a world invaded by an evil corporation, Kirby dons the Robobot Armor, which can transform into over 10 different modes.
— Past Adventures section in Kirby's Dream Buffet and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Story[edit]

Kirby runs off toward a leg of the ship that took over Popstar.

A robotic organization known as the Haltmann Works Company has targeted Popstar for its industrialization purposes. They fly down a giant spaceship roughly the same size as Popstar to take over, as both King Dedede and Meta Knight try in vain to stop them.

Even after all the devastation, Kirby and his planet are right back to normal after all is said and done.

Gameplay[edit]

Gameplay in Kirby: Planet Robobot is similar to its immediate predecessors, though featuring new abilities and situations.

It appears in various points of the stages and allows Kirby to smash his way through larger obstacles, though it comes with some drawbacks in most instances, the most obvious one being the inability to float indefinitely in most cases. The suit is also modular with some of the Copy Abilities, taking on new form and function with each one.

On top of this new mechanic, Kirby: Planet Robobot features more enemies, new and different items and tools, and new and different Copy Abilities to utilize: most notably the all-new abilities Doctor, ESP, and Poison. It also employs circular pathways in some areas, not seen since Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, and flying shooter sections reminiscent of the endgame for Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

Like in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Kirby is able to store certain Food items for later use as Assist Stars from Bandana Waddle Dee. These can be improved through the use of StreetPass. Additionally, the game is compatible with amiibo, which allows Kirby to obtain a Copy Ability from one when scanned. Among the abilities he can get from these are special costume variants of Hammer, Sword, and Parasol, as well as the long-lost abilities Smash Bros. and UFO, which are otherwise carefully hidden inside the game itself.

Modes[edit]

This game is also compatible with amiibo, coming with its own set as well. Scanning in an amiibo will give Kirby a Copy Ability specific to the amiibo scanned, as well as the home set unlocking special costumes. Scanning the Super Smash Bros. Kirby amiibo will unlock the Smash Bros. ability (formerly known as "Smash"), and scanning the home series Kirby amiibo will unlock the UFO ability, which is the easiest way to obtain it.

Copy Abilities[edit]

The central gimmick of Kirby: Planet Robobot is the Robobot Armor, which is available in several stages and can merge with certain Copy Abilities.

Kirby: Planet Robobot features a total of 27 standard Copy Abilities, with three of them being brand new abilities, and four more returning from long absences. Like Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby: Triple Deluxe, these abilities feature extensive move-sets and most offer high versatility. Many of these abilities are compatible with the Robobot Armor.

In addition, Kirby can gain abilities if the player scans in amiibo during regular gameplay. Certain amiibo yield unique abilities or offer different palette swaps.

Robobot Armor modes[edit]

Main article: Robobot Armor

  • The Japanese, English, French and Korean versions spell out "PROGRAM," hinting at the final boss.
  • The Italian version has the first letter of the first word in each area name spell out "SISTEMA" (translating to "system" in Italian) and the first letter of the later words in each area name spelling out "PROGRAMMA" (translating to "program" in Italian), both of which hint at the final boss in much the same way.
  • The Spanish version spells out "PROCESO" (translating to "process" in Spanish), which again hints at the final boss.
  • The German version spells out "ROBOBOT," in relation to both the game title and the Robobot Armor.

Characters[edit]

Characters in Kirby: Planet Robobot
Character Role
Protagonists
Kirby takes the role of the main hero and playable character as usual. In order to stop Haltmann Works from mechanizing his homeworld, Kirby takes control of one of their robotic suits and uses it to help him blast his way through Haltmann's employees and robotic creations. Kirby is ultimately successful at this task, when - with Meta Knight's help - he destroys the company's Mother Computer Star Dream, thus undoing all its work.
Although not playing a role in the story, Bandana Waddle Dee shows up in the background at regular intervals to toss Kirby and Meta Knight Assist Stars to help them out.
Villains
Other
While not serving a role in the main story, Galacta Knight appears at the end of Meta Knightmare Returns after being summoned in by Star Dream to test Meta Knight. Immediately upon being summoned, Galacta Knight slashes Star Dream and then engages in combat with Meta Knight. Meta Knight manages to overpower him and seal him away in a crystal before sending him back to the dimension from whence he came.
King Dedede does not play a significant role in Kirby: Planet Robobot, and is only seen in the opening and ending cutscenes for the game. At some point, it is suggested that Haltmann Works stole Dedede's genes to create a clone of him, which they send after Kirby.

Enemies[edit]

Kirby: Planet Robobot carries a majority of its enemies - including their look and behavior - from its predecessor; Kirby: Triple Deluxe. However, the game also adds a large array of new enemies, and brings back many older enemies not featured in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, with some (such as Simirror) making their first 3D appearance in this game. True to the mechanized motif of the world in Kirby: Planet Robobot, many enemies have received mechanical and/or cybernetic augmentations, though these are purely cosmetic. The following tables list each standard enemy in Kirby: Planet Robobot:

ESP, Spark (projectiles) A floating enemy with a U-shaped body and disembodied hands. It attacks using electric orbs and can evade Kirby by teleporting about.

Bosses[edit]

There are twelve bosses in Story Mode, ten in Meta Knightmare Returns, and six in the sub-game Team Kirby Clash. Note that 2.0 versions of most bosses that are fought in Meta Knightmare Returns and in The True Arena are not listed, as with the Mashers from Kirby 3D Rumble, who are instead classified as mid-bosses. For bosses from Team Kirby Clash, see Team Kirby Clash#Bosses.

Development[edit]

Kirby: Planet Robobot was originally planned as a follow up to Kirby: Triple Deluxe, being referred to as Kirby: Triple Deluxe 2.[1] Once it was decided that the game's theme would revolve around mechanization and industrialization, the name was changed to Kirby: HAGANE (hagane means "steel" in Japanese). The title went through a few more changes, Kirby: Robot Planet, Roborobo Planet, and finally, Planet Robobot, to keep with the playfulness of the Kirby universe. From the finalized title, the Robobot Armor got its name.[2]

Unused content[edit]

The unused Cappy attack.
Main article: tcrf:Kirby: Planet Robobot

Cappy was meant to have an attack that allowed him to toss his cap between foreground and background. A full working version can be found in the game, but it was never implemented.

In certain trailers prior to the game's release, a cinematic fight between Kirby and an Invader Armor can be seen, which incorporates elements from the "Metal Invasion" cutscene. In the final product, the Invader Armor is fought in a normal Mid-Boss fight in Patched Plains - Stage 2 instead. The scene also seems to be part of the "First Contact" cutscene.

Nintendo eShop description[edit]

(This description was reused for the game on the My Nintendo Store.)[3]

Trivia[edit]

  • The internal code name for Kirby: Planet Robobot is "Torte", a type of cake, matching with previous food-related project names such as "Donut" and "Parufe" (parfait). It is also referred to in some press material as "TorteCity". Before the game was officially revealed, it was leaked through Nintendo's internal 2016 marketing budget under the name "Torte City".[4]
  • The Japanese release day of April 28th is only one day off the release day for the original Kirby's Dream Land in Japan.
  • This is the first game in the Kirby series where Meta Knight has gauntlets over his gloves, carrying over from his appearance in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U.
    • This is also the first time Meta Knight's unmasked appearance has yellow eyes in the Kirby series, again matching Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U (specifically, the Meta Knight-based palette for Kirby).
