Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe is a main-series Kirby game for the Nintendo Switch. It is a remake of the Wii game Kirby's Return to Dream Land. The game was announced on September 13th, 2022 and released on February 24th, 2023; a demo of the game was made available on February 8th, 2023, following that day's Nintendo Direct. It features the same story and gameplay as the original, but with new additions such as new Copy Abilities (namely the brand new Mecha and Sand abilities and the returning Festival ability from Kirby Star Allies), a revamped collection of Sub-Games housed in the new location Merry Magoland (an amusement park run by Magolor that acts as a separate mode in the game), and a new Extra Mode that features Magolor as the main character called Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler, in which Magolor must recover his lost powers.

While Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe features nearly the exact same side-scrolling 2.5-D gameplay as the original, the graphics have been given an overhaul, giving all the characters strong outlines and increasing the detail and contrast. In addition, the characters (most notably King Dedede), enemies, and objects have been updated to their modern looks. Super Abilities have also been refined with faster gameplay and more visual flair. On top of this, several gameplay and control style tweaks, sound changes, and other small additions overall transform the experience when compared to the original game. The game reportedly sold almost 1.5 million units as of March 2023, and is thus expected to surpass the sales of the original Wii game.[1]

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe is available in all languages that Kirby's Return to Dream Land was originally available in, along with new translations in Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, and Chinese (both Simplified and Traditional).

Story[edit]

The main story of Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe is entirely unchanged from the original game, though the cinematic cutscenes have all been graphically updated.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe features the same story as the original game in its Main Mode. In it, Kirby, King Dedede, Meta Knight, and Bandana Waddle Dee have their merry peaceful day in Dream Land interrupted when Magolor comes crashing in from Another Dimension on his ship - the Lor Starcutter - which flies into pieces that scatter all around the world of Popstar. Kirby, kind soul that he is, agrees to help the stranger Magolor get his ship parts back, so he and his friends go adventuring across the land to recover them, having to fight off certain powerful opponents to get the larger pieces. Once the Lor is back together again, its grateful captain thanks Kirby and his friends by taking them on a cruise to his "homeworld" Halcandra, where they are subsequently attacked by a ferocious four-headed dragon named Landia.

Magolor urges Kirby to go and defeat the dragon for him, so he does so, knocking the dragon's crown off his highest head in the process. Magolor then shows up and takes this crown, placing it on his head and transforming into a big menacing apparition. Magolor reveals that he had actually tricked Kirby into defeating Landia so he could take this artifact for his own, and declares that he will now use its power to take over the universe, starting with Popstar. To stop him, Landia teams up with Kirby and his friends to chase Magolor into Another Dimension and they defeat him in the end, shattering the crown and banishing Magolor to parts unknown. Kirby and friends are subsequently taken home by Landia and the Lor before the dimension collapses in on them, resolving the conflict.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe introduces a new extra story in the form of Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler, which is detailed in its section below.

Gameplay[edit]

Gameplay in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe follows the original, encapsulating classic side-scrolling platforming with an increased emphasis on exploration and combat over precise jumping or maneuvering.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe features the same core gameplay of the original, though with many adjustments and touch-ups following innovations introduced by games such as Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Kirby Star Allies, and even Kirby and the Forgotten Land. At heart, the gameplay still closely matches up with the classic formula established all the way back in Kirby's Adventure, as Kirby and his friends move through largely linear stages, using various abilities and attacks to deal with the enemies that litter the landscape, with the goal being to reach the door at the end to clear the stage or to defeat the boss at the end of each level. To assist in this endeavor, Kirby and friends can make use of various items that appear in the stages, such as the Crackler, Stomper Boot, and Prism Shield, as well as picking up food items to recover health and Point Stars to gain extra lives. The most notable breaks in regular gameplay are the sections in stages that make use of the powerful Super Abilities, which are used to clear large obstacles and open rifts to Another Dimension for an extra challenge just before the end of certain stages.

Like the original game, Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe can be played solo or with up to 4 players for simultaneous multiplayer co-op. Additional players can drop in and drop out at any time, though they cannot be controlled by the CPU like in Kirby Super Star or Kirby Star Allies. Also unlike those games, additional players can also play as different colored Kirbys. This multiplayer functionality also carries into nearly all of the Sub-Games on offer, as well as in Magolor Epilogue.

Playable characters[edit]

The playable characters in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe are as follows:

Playable characters in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe
Character Description Notes
Kirby, round and brave as ever, takes the lead on the adventure as the P1 character. Using his inhale, he can gobble enemies up and spit them back out as Star Bullets or swallow them to potentially gain a new power, greatly changing up his playstyle in the process. Players 2-4 can select yellow, blue, and/or green Kirby to play as.
A portly regal bird-like man who has put his past differences with his "arch frenemy" aside to join Kirby on his adventure. King Dedede packs a wallop with his hammer, using all of the same techniques as Hammer Kirby, in addition to some tricks of his own. King Dedede has new moves which were not present in the original Kirby's Return to Dream Land, such as his Head Slide and Super Dedede Jump.
A mysterious masked swordsman who shares a similar physique to Kirby, though with bat-like wings that give him great aerial mobility at all times. His playstyle is similar to both Sword and Wing Kirby, though with his own set of tricks as well. Meta Knight has new moves which were not present in the original Kirby's Return to Dream Land, such as his Galactic Counter and Crescent Shot.
An intrepid Waddle Dee who carries a spear and a blue bandana to distinguish him from his more humdrum relatives. His playstyle is very similar to Spear Kirby, though he gains some improved mobility due to possessing an Infinity Jump. Bandana Waddle Dee can now use his "Ground Thrust" technique, which was introduced in Kirby Star Allies.
After clearing the main Story Mode, Magolor is playable in his own adventure, Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler. Though initially quite weak and with few attacks, Magolor is able to gradually restore his lost powers until he becomes a force to be reckoned with. Magolor's moveset in this game resembles that in Kirby Star Allies, though with a lot of changes.

Copy Abilities[edit]

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe features every Copy Ability from the original game, in addition to the new Mecha and Sand abilities, as well as Festival, making it the first remake to add Copy Abilities that were not in the original game (although introducing new abilities was considered for the previous remakes, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land and Kirby Super Star Ultra, the idea was ultimately scrapped for both games[2][3]). Some abilities were also given updated movesets based on later games.

Enemies[edit]

Artwork of Armoroid, one of the few new enemies added to this game over the original.

All of the enemies, mid-bosses, and bosses in the original Kirby's Return to Dream Land return in this remake, and none have been replaced. However, a handful of new enemies and bosses have been added, particularly due to the new Copy Abilities and new fights in Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler. In addition, a few enemies and bosses have been altered somewhat, whether that be in look, attack patterns, or both.

All enemies from the original (and a few new ones) appear in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, namely:

Merry Magoland[edit]

Wide view of Merry Magoland, with all the Sub-Games visible.
Kirby and his friends arriving at the park via Warp Star.
Main article: Merry Magoland

Merry Magoland is a new area of the game where Kirby and up to three other players can participate in competitive Sub-Games (although the games can also be accessed in the Lor Starcutter like in the original Kirby's Return to Dream Land). There are far more than in previous games, with most returning from older games in the Kirby series.

In Merry Magoland, the Sub-Games are hosted by Manager Magolor, who gives Kirby tips and, if the player is connected to Nintendo Switch Online, will share data from other players around the world, like Wise Waddle Dee in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Despite this, Merry Magoland is same system-only, with no local communication or online multiplayer. Playing Sub-Games will accumulate stamps, which unlock cosmetic Dress-Up Masks or items for use in the main game.

The following Sub-Games are available:

Sub-Games in Merry Magoland
Sub-Game Origin game Description Notes
Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land A game where the contestants bat a bomb around using frying pans, and whoever doesn't bat in time gets blown up and eliminated from the game.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe A new game where the contestants run around top-down arenas and shoot at each other using laser guns. Likely a replacement for Scope Shot from the original Kirby's Return to Dream Land, which does not appear in this game.
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards A game where the contestants run around an 8x8 grid platform and throw waves to drop tiles to try and make their opponents fall. A new "High-Speed" mode has been added in this version, which is unlocked after clearing Intense difficulty.
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror A game where the contestants charge up and punch a boulder to see who can create the deepest fissure in the ground.
Kirby's Adventure A game where the contestants catch eggs thrown by Robo Dedede while avoiding bombs. The original game had King Dedede throwing the eggs and bombs, but this was changed since he is a possible contestant now.
Kirby Super Star Ultra A game where the contestants shoot cardboard cutouts of enemies that pop up in a Wild West-like setting. A new Magolor target has been added in this version, worth more points than the others.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe A new game where the contestants try to find the book that Magolor is thinking of in a library.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land A game where the contestants toss shurikens at moving targets to try and hit the bull's-eyes.
Kirby Super Star A game where the contestants strike when prompted as quickly as they can to try to come out on top. There is now both a single player and multiplayer version of this game, with the former resembling classic Samurai Kirby and the latter resembling Quick Draw's multiplayer mode in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe A variant of Samurai Kirby which pits Kirby against the 99 most recent times from around the world. This game is not available until Samurai Kirby is played at least once.
This game uses a connection to the internet, though it is not played live against other opponents and CPUs are only used if the player doesn't have an internet connection. It is the only sub-game here that is single-player only.
Kirby: Squeak Squad A game where the contestants bump each other using special "Smash Stars" to knock each other off the arena. The Squeaks return as course obstacles as well, with additions compared to the original game.

Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler[edit]

After the main Story Mode, a new Extra Mode is unlocked which stars Magolor, stranded in Another Dimension and greatly weakened.
Main article: Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler

New to this game, an Extra Mode called Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler features Magolor as the main playable character. In it, after he is defeated in the main story, Magolor is cast adrift through Another Dimension and loses most of his magical power. He has to traverse various otherworldly realms and slowly build his magic back so that he can find a way back home. He does this by finding various magical artifacts known as Fruit Fragments which congregate at an old abandoned Ethereal Altar. Once all the fragments are found, they coalesce into a magical crystal fruit which is then stolen by a ghostly being possessed by the shards of the broken Master Crown. When Magolor defeats this beast, the shards then fuse directly with the fruit to form a giant tree-like apparition which Magolor has to defeat using his own version of the Ultra Sword. After presumably destroying the Master Crown for good, Magolor is able to escape into a familiar alternate universe, where he takes on a new identity for a time.

This Extra Mode features new stages and souped-up versions of bosses from the main game. It can also be played with up to four players, though all of them play as different colored Magolors. While significantly shorter than the main adventure, Magolor Epilogue features a fresh take on the Kirby formula, using its progression system for Magolor as well as an emphasis on scoring combos on enemies.

Other differences from Kirby's Return to Dream Land[edit]

Aside from the above-mentioned additions and changes, the following other changes have been made between Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe:

New features[edit]

Image of Kirby using one of his emotes, which was not possible in the original game.
Screenshot from the Sand Challenge, one of the two new Challenge Stages in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe.
  • An easier difficulty setting has been implemented into the game's Story Mode called "Helper Magolor". With this enabled, Magolor will appear during stages to toss Kirby helpful items, including a potion that doubles his health, and Ability Stars during boss battles. Magolor will also save Kirby if he falls into a bottomless pit.
  • The new enemies and Copy Abilities have been dispersed throughout the regular stages, replacing previous enemies and/or Copy Essences in certain instances.
  • Additional collectibles have been added to stages, such as Stamp Tickets.
  • There are two additional Challenge Stages for the newly added Mecha and Sand copy abilities, bringing the total to nine stages.
  • There is now a Missions board which can be viewed in Merry Magoland, with 100 objectives mostly revolving around the Sub-Games. Upon completion, 20 True Extra Missions are added to the list, bringing the total number of missions to 120. Any True Extra Missions that are cleared before unlocking the True Extra Missions list will still be recorded, and marked accordingly after unlocking the list.
  • A new item, the Random Copy Essence, has been introduced. This item acts like the Mix Copy Essence from Kirby: Planet Robobot, but cycles between abilities much more slowly. It can be carried in Kirby's inventory and spawned at will. Notably, using this item means Kirby can make use of Copy Abilities in the Another Dimension platforming stages.
  • Kirby can now obtain Souvenirs which he can carry in his inventory to save for later, much like the Stock Items in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. These items include Maxim Tomatoes, Energy Drinks, Cracklers, Balloon Bombs, and Random Copy Essences.
  • Kirby and his friends can wear Dress-Up Masks which can alter the face of the wearer.
  • Kirby and other characters now have access to Emotes, much like in Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Kirby's Dream Buffet. These Emotes are entirely new, and may be performed by moving the R Stick in different directions.
  • All bosses have unique Special Page descriptions on the pause screen. In the original, only a select few had them.
    • In the Japanese, Chinese, and Korean versions, the Special Pages give titles to several of the bosses, similar to Kirby Star Allies and Kirby and the Forgotten Land. This was largely removed from the other localizations, which instead work the titles into the actual text.
  • Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe has amiibo functionality, allowing the player to scan in figures to get items during stages.
  • The True Arena adds the six bosses from Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler, so it now has 21 rounds, up from 15 in the original.
    • Magolor Soul also has a heavily modified fight within The True Arena, with a new battlefield, two health bars, new attacks based on Mecha and Sand, a new song ("Supreme Ruler's Coronation - OVERLORD" from Kirby Star Allies), and a new defeat animation.
  • A new HAL Room has been added to the Story Mode and Extra Mode, in Dangerous Dinner - Stage 2.

Gameplay/control changes[edit]

The control settings menu for Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, showing options that were not available in the original game
  • The player can adjust the controls between Type A, the default control style that plays like Kirby Star Allies, and Type B, which plays more like Kirby Super Star. There is also an option to have Kirby automatically swallow ability-yielding objects or enemies, like in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. If Helper Magolor is enabled, Auto-Swallow is automatically turned on, though it can still be turned off with Helper Magolor enabled.
  • Controls have been updated to match later games in the series.
    • All instances of motion controls have been made optional. While the player still has the option to use them, the game also allows for button or control stick inputs as appropriate, and descriptions of features that primarily used motion controls instead only mention button or control stick ones for most part. For instance, Ninja Dojo supports motion controls as in the original if the player uses Joy-Con controllers, but the game can now be played simply with buttons.
    • Due to the above, Super Inhale now automatically activates after inhaling for a little while (assuming that no other inputs are made), like in most other games that feature it. It also activates much slower while in the air.
    • Kirby and friends have the ability to swim faster by pressing the jump button repeatedly, which was introduced in Kirby: Triple Deluxe; in the original, they did this automatically, and pressing the jump button would instead bring them to the surface.
      • They can also swim and use the Water Gun diagonally, which was introduced in Kirby Star Allies.
    • Besides pressing the - button like in the original, Copy Abilities can also be dropped by holding Y (type A) or A (type B) for a short time, like in Kirby Star Allies onward.
    • Kirby and company can now dash from a standstill by quickly tilting the Control Stick, like in Kirby: Triple Deluxe onward.
    • Kirby and company can now Quick Fall while airborne by pressing down on the Control Stick or + Control Pad twice, like in Kirby: Triple Deluxe onward.
    • Kirby and friends now have the ability to Dodge and Air Dodge, a mechanic that was introduced in Kirby: Triple Deluxe.
    • A Fuse Cannon's fuse can now be made to burn faster by crouching while inside the cannon, like in Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
  • Existing bosses have slightly increased HP compared to their counterparts in the original Kirby's Return to Dream Land.
  • Various Kirby's Copy Abilities and other playable characters have their move damage tweaked.
  • Some of Kirby's Copy Abilities (e.g. Sword, Fire) contain moves that were not introduced until games released after the original Kirby's Return to Dream Land.
  • The Wing and Tornado abilities have gained the ability to cool down Flame Blocks, an attribute given to them in games starting with Kirby Star Allies.
  • Many of the stage puzzles have been subtly redesigned to facilitate their completion and lessen the consequences of failure (e.g. newly placed Copy Essences, weaker water currents, etc.).
  • Because of the revamped lighting engine, dark areas are now lit up by any object that gives off ambient light, rather than specifically-coded ones.
  • King Dedede, Meta Knight, and Bandana Waddle Dee have been given additional moves to more closely match their appearance as Dream Friends in Kirby Star Allies and Buddies in Kirby Fighters 2.[4]
  • Copy Essences have been altered in various ways:
    • The Mix Copy Essence from Kirby: Planet Robobot appears before certain boss fights as well as in the initial lobbies for The Arena and The True Arena.
    • Defeated Mid-Bosses now leave behind a Copy Essence that corresponds to the ability they give, a trait introduced in Kirby Star Allies.
    • Many Copy Essences were replaced, either with the new abilities or with already existing ones.
    • Along with the newly-added abilities (Mecha, Sand, and Festival), Crash and Mike are now available in the Copy Ability Rooms, as they have been in games since Kirby: Triple Deluxe. As a result, a fifth Copy Ability Room has been added, and the assortment of abilities in each room has been adjusted.
  • Stages in Extra Mode have been further altered with additional enemies and fewer health items, going further than the Extra Mode in the original.[5]
  • Super Abilities have received multiple changes to make them faster overall:
    • The initial cutscene that plays when obtaining a Super Ability can be skipped.
    • Kirby's general movement speed is increased while using a Super Ability.
    • Super Ability attack animations are faster.
    • The timer for Super Abilities drains more quickly.
    • A Super Ability's Ability Star no longer vanishes when manually discarded, though the timer doesn't reset when re-obtained.
  • The amount of lives Kirby has is no longer reset when returning to the main menu or restarting the game, much like in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse and Kirby Star Allies.
  • Much like in Kirby Star Allies, obtaining the max number of lives (99) places a crown on Kirby's stock icon. In addition, the icon will then smile.
  • In the original game, Mix was activated by inhaling three ability-providing enemies of any kind, and the roulette would always run in a random order. In this game, while it still can be activated the same way as the original, it will now activate if two enemies with different abilities are inhaled, and the roulette always runs in a fixed order (though it still starts at a random position). These changes bring Mix more in line with how it functions in Kirby: Triple Deluxe onward.
  • Defeated Mid-Bosses no longer damage Kirby or other characters that touch them while their inert bodies are still in the play area, as with Kirby: Triple Deluxe onward.
    • Similarly, Balloon Bombs no longer damage the player after exploding.
  • Halcandra can now be accessed through an icon on Planet Popstar's map, and vice versa.

Audio/visual changes[edit]

One of the more notable visual changes is that the areas inside the rifts to Another Dimension are no longer initially monochrome.
Kirby posing in front of the Goal Door with a special fanfare at the end of the stage: this was not present in the original game.
  • The doors and Goal Doors have been updated to their Kirby Star Allies designs. Also, Kirby and his partners now pose before they enter the Goal Door in regular stages, with a clear fanfare. In the original game, Kirby only posed when entering the Goal Door in Challenge Stages.
  • The original game's music has been remastered in higher quality, though it has not been changed otherwise. Interestingly, the remasters are not the same as Kirby Wii Music Selection, and in some cases, sound less crisp than the music selection.
    • Certain areas in stages, such as caves and dark places, now add dampening and reverb effects to the music and other sound effects.
    • The music and sound effects also muffle if Kirby enters water, much like in Kirby Star Allies.
    • The Goal Game music used to play immediately after dealing the final blow to a boss. In Deluxe, the music starts playing after the Part Sphere or Fruit Fragment appears after defeating a boss, with the exception of Landia. Due to this change, the music doesn't play at all after defeating Metal General and HR-D3.
    • Welcome Your New Overlord was slightly remixed to make the song's guitar solo more prominent.
  • There are several new or repurposed songs interspersed within the game, such as HAL Rooms playing music from Kirby's Dream Buffet rather than the version of "Green Greens" from the Item Challenge, and HR-D3's second phase playing "Roar of Dedede" instead of "Guardian Angel: Landia".
  • Kirby and other characters have new voice clips, with the Super Abilities in particular each having distinct shouts associated with them.
    • In particular, Kirby now yells during the final Ultra Sword clash against Magolor / Magolor EX, like in the final battles of later games starting with Kirby: Planet Robobot, and finishes off with the "Toryah!" battle cry from the Ultra Sword Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U.
    • In the original game, the low-pitched "Chesto!" exclamation when Kirby uses the Mike ability's Encore move was a modified voice clip from Kirby Super Star Ultra. The remake reuses the equivalent voice clip from Kirby: Triple Deluxe, like in the other main series games since then, and as such has increased reverb.
    • Kirby shouts "Hi!" when he beats a stage, as with Kirby: Triple Deluxe onward.
    • New vocalizations and miscellaneous sounds have been added to various enemies like Whispy Woods and objects like the rift wall in Another Dimension sections.
  • The Another Dimension platforming areas are now presented in full color with a color wash effect, like the one seen in the isolated isles of Forgo Dreams, rather than being monochrome at first. When Sphere Doomers are defeated, the color wash is removed, corresponding to how the original game would return to full color.
  • Some characters who have reappeared in later games have had their designs updated to match, including enemies such as Poppy Bros. Jr. and Walf. Others, such as Gigant Edge and Gigatzo, use upscaled versions of their original designs.
  • Certain Copy Abilities have been visually redesigned, particularly ones that appeared in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Wing's hat has also been redesigned to give it less of a resemblance to a warbonnet.
  • Merry Magoland can now be seen in the background of Nutty Noon - Stage 1.
  • The stage devices and items have had their designs updated to match their appearances used since Kirby Star Allies .
  • Each of the Super Ability acquisition cut-scenes have been updated and made distinct, whereas before, they were all the same, albeit with Kirby posing differently.
    • The classic Super Ability animations are retained for the boss fight against Magolor and Magolor EX.
  • When enemies are hit by Super Ability attacks, they now have a chance to "splat" against the screen.
  • The Ability Star icons have all been subtly redesigned using new artwork.
  • There have been many minor visual updates to various effects and animations in the game, including updated transition effects when going from one area to another.
  • Super Ability-granting enemies now warp in through a portal from Another Dimension, rather than simply popping in as before.
  • In the Japanese version, the circle mark used in the signs of first few stages is no longer used, replacing it with the check mark normally used in the international versions of games up until Kirby Star Allies.
    • The Korean version of the original game also used the circle mark, though this was replaced with the check mark starting with Kirby: Triple Deluxe and has persisted in every game since.

Other changes[edit]

The Main Mode menu, with everything unlocked and completed
  • Bandana Waddle Dee is now referred to by his name used in Kirby: Triple Deluxe onward. In the original, he was just called "Waddle Dee". He is also voiced, reusing the voice clips from Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
  • Several bits of flavor text from the original game have been rewritten in the remake's Japanese script, although most changes are minor (for example, adding a first person pronoun in Bandana Waddle Dee's description). In English and most translations, a good part of the text was retranslated, causing some changes compared to the original, some bigger than others. As a result of having more room for text compared to the original, the new text is longer and generally more accurate to the original Japanese script on the whole.
  • The player can choose to enter Main Mode or Merry Magoland directly after choosing a file.
  • The Main Mode menu has been redesigned; besides adding the new modes, the background is now the same as the title screen, a "Past Adventures" menu has been added, and the previous "Main Mode" option is now referred to as Story Mode.
  • The Sound Test has been completely redesigned, and is now known as the Jukebox. It no longer includes sound effects, but now has an auto feature, song titles, and colored music notes indicating the composer of each track.
  • In the demo version, Magolor doesn't get annoyed if Kirby talks to him a lot of times. Instead, Magolor says that Kirby is probably expecting him to say "something clever and/or insightful", but then gives a metaphor for how he is out of things to say, and that he and Kirby should talk some other time.
  • Like in later games starting with Kirby: Triple Deluxe, the staff credits can be viewed from the start of the game in the Theater. There is a new credits medley that plays only when the credits are viewed through here.

Demo[edit]

The main menu for the demo version, after completing the Main Mode content

On February 8th, 2023, a demo version of Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe was released to the public via Nintendo eShop. This demo features the opening cutscene for the game, as well as limited access to the Main Mode and to Merry Magoland. In the Main Mode, the player has access to the Lor Starcutter, as well as a few stages in Cookie Country. The first two of these stages are compilations of areas from Cookie Country and early Raisin Ruins stages, while the third and last is the boss stage against Whispy Woods. Merry Magoland is unlocked after clearing the first stage. After clearing Whispy Woods, a few more Copy Abilities are made available inside the Testing Area in the Lor Starcutter, and Whispy Woods EX is unlocked. In addition, defeating Whispy Woods or Whispy Woods EX triggers a movie that showcases features from the full game, including the Magolor Epilogue.

Notably, a HAL Room is accessible from the second stage in the demo, though it has a different set of Copy Essences than it does in the main game.

The following characters and Copy Abilities are available in the demo:

Copy Abilities[edit]

Super Abilities[edit]

Characters[edit]

In Merry Magoland, the player has access to the Ninja Dojo and Booming Blasters Sub-Games, along with three Missions for each game. Energy Drinks, Cracklers, and Random Copy Essences may be obtained as souvenirs, along with the Dress-Up Masks for Waddle Dee, Kine, Chef Kawasaki, King Dedede, and Elfilin.

Nintendo eShop description[edit]

Kirby's adventures continue in Dream Land!

The tough puff Kirby is back for a 4-player platforming adventure. Copy enemies' abilities and use their power to attack with a sword, wield a whip, and float with a parasol. You can also laser blast with the new Mecha Copy Ability that makes a series debut! The extra muscle will be handy in finding missing pieces for Magolor's ship, which crash landed on Planet Popstar. Float and fight along with friends on the same system, where each player can control another Kirby or one of Kirby's iconic friends like King Dedede, Meta Knight, and Bandana Waddle Dee.

Take a break from the adventure and play subgames with friends

Play attractions built around returning subgames like Samurai Kirby as well as some brand-new ones like Magolor's Tome Trackers. Bring along up to 3 additional friends on a detour from the adventure as you compete on the same system and share the fun together!

Trivia[edit]

  • Despite the original Kirby's Return to Dream Land being called Kirby's Adventure Wii in European languages, no such name difference is present in this remake.[6]
    • This makes Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe the second Kirby remake of a game that originally had a different name between the American and European versions to use the original game's American name for the European title, the first being Kirby Super Star Ultra.
    • However, the Japanese title is still ほしのカービィWiiウィー デラックス (Kirby of the Stars Wii Deluxe) even though it is not on the Wii system. The developers were worried if keeping "Wii" in the name would confuse customers, and even considered giving the game a brand new name like New ほしのカービィ (New Kirby of the Stars), or adding a subtitle, like the novel "Kirby: Lor Starcutter and a Magician of Falsehood", but they decided to use "Wii" in the end, as they ended up agreeing that it would make it clearer that the game was a deluxe version of the original Wii game.[7] The "Wii" subtitle also carried over to the Korean and Chinese names.
  • The internal codename for this game is "Ark", referencing the Lor Starcutter. Elements related to Merry Magoland are codenamed "YY" after the Japanese title and elements related to Magolor Epilogue are codenamed "Maho" after the first two syllables of Magolor's Japanese name.
