Kirby's Pet Peeve is the twelfth (15th in the Japanese version) episode of the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! series. In this episode, Kirby receives a robotic toy dog bought for him by Sir Ebrum's family from Gengu's toy shop, and after a rocky start, Kirby forms a close bond with the toy. After some rough encounters with the kids, Tiff soon learns that the robot dog is a weapon sent by Night Mare Enterprises to destroy Kirby. As she tries unsuccessfully to dissuade Kirby from his pet and King Dedede attempts to steal it from him out of jealousy, the dog falls into the ocean, where it proceeds to start a self-destruct sequence to blow up Kirby as he tries to rescue it. However, the dog finds itself unable to carry out its mission since it also became attached to Kirby, instead redirecting its explosion on King Dedede as he tries to catch it. Kirby is left to mourn the loss of his pet at the seaside.

This episode marks the first time that Gengu has had a starring role in an episode, and is also the first one to not end on a happy note for Kirby.

Plot synopsis

Kirby is introduced to his new pet.

The episode begins out in the fields of Dream Land, where Tiff's idle reading is interrupted by a loud game being played by Tuff and the Cappy children. They try to direct Kirby in their game, but he doesn't quite know what he is doing, and trips down a small cliffside toward Tiff's location. Tiff scolds the kids for treating Kirby so roughly, but they blow her off and walk away. Tiff then reassures Kirby, suggesting she could try to find him a more suitable playmate. Later on in town, Gengu is taking inventory at his toy shop when Sir Ebrum brings his family in to acquire something suitable for Kirby. Gengu points them to a box he recently obtained from a suspicious source and opens it up for them to see.

Later that night at Castle Dedede, Tiff presents the toy to Kirby, placing a small robotic dog in front of him. After turning it on, the dog identifies Kirby and begins relentlessly following him. It follows Kirby out into the countryside as he tries to get away, eventually running up a tree where the pet cannot follow. Watching this, Tokkori shows up and pecks at the dog to make it go away, causing it to fall into a pond. Tokkori then continues to bully it, causing Kirby to retaliate against him and run off with the dog following behind. At a perilous river crossing, Kirby attempts once again to get away from the dog, but still trying to follow him, the dog falls into the river. Kirby sees this and runs to its aid, using his inhale to suck him out of the river and back to shore. As time goes on, Kirby shows the dog around as the two grow closer, in the process revealing a few questionable peripherals on the toy. Over the next couple days, Kirby and the dog grow closer as the toy antagonizes the kids when they grow jealous of it.

Kirby teaches his dog how to cross the street.

One night at the beach, Kirby and the dog are eating fish when King Dedede and Escargoon roll up in their Armored Vehicle and notice Kirby's new pet, causing Dedede to get jealous and desire one as well. Unable to acquire one at Gengu's shop, the King makes plans to take Kirby's toy for himself. Tiff soon learns from the kids the kind of self-defense measures the dog has and goes to Gengu to ask about it, learning that Dedede wanted it as well and discovering the label on the box. Meanwhile, Escargoon and King Dedede plot to steal away Kirby's pet, eventually finding the dog and taking it while Kirby is napping. Back at the castle library, Tiff discovers that the toy was sent by Night Mare Enterprises. She tries to dissuade Kirby from finding his lost pet, but he doesn't listen to her, running through a storm to try and find it. Kirby cries loud enough that the dog hears him from inside a cage at Castle Dedede and breaks out of it, meeting back up with Kirby out in the fields.

Kirby holds the last remnant of his former friend.

This reunion is interrupted by King Dedede, however, who orders his Waddle Dees to catch the dog and bring it back. After a brief setback, they manage to corner the two at a cliff overlooking the ocean, but Tiff and Tuff show up again to find them. Tiff once again warns Kirby about the dog, but he runs back to its side. The dog later trips off a crumbling section of cliff and falls into the ocean, prompting Kirby to dive in and swim after it. While in the water, the dog's programming is overridden and it begins a self-destruct sequence. As King Dedede pursues in a motorboat, Kirby manages to catch up with the dog as it counts down. Remembering the time Kirby spent with it, the dog regains enough control to dive away from Kirby and into King Dedede's net, where it promptly detonates, destroying the boat and dumping King Dedede and Escargoon into the water. All Kirby recovers of his pet is its mechanical tail.

That night, Kirby looks out toward the ocean motionless. Tiff and Tuff watch from a distance and wonder if the dog really was out for Kirby. Gengu then shows up with a new robot dog which he made himself, intending to give it to Kirby, but he realizes that it can't replace Kirby's lost friend. Kirby then steps out somewhat into the water, seeing his robot pet as a constellation in the sky for a moment and crying out for it as the episode ends.

Differences between versions

  • In the Japanese version, the logo for Holy Nightmare Corporation on the box and in the book Fumu references is slightly different in design.
  • In the Japanese version, the scene where the Electronic Pet is scanning Kirby features English text, but several words are misspelled. In the 4Kids version, this readout is replaced with nonsense number sequences instead.
    • A second readout scene is also dramatically shortened in the 4Kids dub for this same reason.
  • An additional scene exists in the Japanese version where Kirby is frolicking in a field of flowers with his Electronic Pet.
  • The title of the book Tiff uses to find out the source of the box is removed in the 4Kids dub. Inthe Japanese version, it is titled "The Crest and The Mark".

Dialogue differences

  • In the Japanese version, the scene where the Electronic Pet calls out to Kirby from the castle uses a loud shrill cry, rather than a series of barks.
