Kirby's Block Ball, known in Japan as カービィのブロックボール (Kābī no Block Ball), is a Breakout-style game for the Game Boy. As it is a spin-off, it strays away from the normal Kirby series platforming style, though it features elements from the main series, such as enemies, items, Copy Abilities, bonus games, and Bosses.

Story

King Dedede steals the five Sparkling Stars and hides them inside his castle. Kirby flies his Warp Star up to Blockworld and conquers each stage in an attempt to reach Dedede. Once all ten prior areas are cleared (with the Border Line score reached), a bridge to the castle forms, and the hero defeats his nemesis at the castle. The Sparkling Stars destroy Dedede's stronghold and reveal that a fountain is built on its foundation. Kirby dances in the fountain's waters as the credits roll.

Gameplay

Kirby's Block Ball plays similarly to a standard Breakout game, though it is laced with many elements from the Kirby series. The objective is to traverse each stage's rounds by breaking each breakable block and defeating the enemies that appear. This is done by having Kirby slam into them after being launched from a paddle. Often, these paddles are lain over beds of spikes, and Kirby will be KO'd if he hits the spikes too many times. If he runs out of lives, Kirby will have to restart the stage.

To aid Kirby in breaking blocks and enemies, the unknown reader can press the A button when Kirby hits the paddle to give him a boost. There are also a small handful of items and Copy Abilities which will give Kirby additional tools to utilize. Each stage ends with a Boss fight, each of which are defeated by having Kirby slam into them repeatedly. Once the stage is clear, the final score is calculated based on a number of factors (details below). There is a special score threshold in each stage called the 'border line score' which the unknown reader needs to exceed in order to access the final stage in the game.

Stages & Rounds

Sub-Games

Kirby can play one of these if he touches a Warp Star. The games are as follows:

Copy Abilities

Copy Abilities deal double damage to enemies and bosses.

Enemies and Objects

Normal Enemies

Pre-Boss enemies

These enemies appear in Round 4, prior to the boss fights, and each take 4 hits to defeat and are worth 5000 points. They are as follows:

Bosses

Blocks

  • Normal blocks - 100 points
  • Metal blocks - 500 points
  • Splitting blocks - 200 points, then 50 for each quarter block
  • Star Blocks - 50 on first hit, then double previous for each subsequent hit until it breaks on 3200. Under special circumstances, an extra hit can be made, which will award a 1-Up.
  • Hollow Block - 300 points (small), 500 points (wide)
  • Bumper - 20 points each time hit

Many of these blocks come in grey reinforced varieties. These are worth double their usual score when hit, then revert to normal. If hit with Kirby in full form, they will simply break.

Items

  • Apple - 1000 points
  • Candy - 1500 points
  • Shortcake - 2000 points
  • Bonus Star - 500 points (activates a Bonus Chance)
  • Block Swap - 100 points (changes normal blocks into reinforced blocks and vice-versa, worth 1000 points during Bonus Chance)
  • Kirby Multiplier - 100 points (Any extra Kirby balls at the end of a round become 1-Ups)
  • Bomb - 100 points
  • Ability card - 100 points

Additional scoring

When a Bonus Star is collected, Kirby can play a Bonus Chance, which turns all remaining blocks into soft blobs that can be passed through when hit. Kirby then has 30 seconds to remove all of the blobs. If successful, the round is complete, and 500 additional points are awarded for each blob removed, and each extra second remaining.

At the end of the stage, after the boss is defeated, 1000 points are awarded for each 1-Up remaining.

Trivia

  • The Kirby which appears inside the 'O' of the word 'Block' in the title text is identical to an artwork piece of Spark Kirby from Kirby's Dream Land 2.
