Kirby's Air Grind is one of the three main sub-games in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Like the other sub-games, Kirby's Air Grind has multiplayer support for up to four players. A similar sub-game appears in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, named Kirby's Wave Ride.
Gameplay
The sub-game involves Kirby and three others riding Warp Stars in the skies, each on their own curved, striped rails, in a race to the finish line. The Kirbys accelerate by grinding on the rails, and the player can move Kirby by holding down the A button.[1] They must release the button when Kirby approaches the rigged, black segments, which slow him down.[2] If timed properly, Kirby receives a speed boost. A rainbow represents the start and end of the race, and the first Kirby to cross the finish line wins. The sub-game duration usually occurs up to 30 seconds.
After the player crosses their Kirby over the finish line, the text "GOAL!" appears on-screen. The results screen then displays, showing each Kirby's rank, their completion time (in seconds), and rate.
This game has three difficulty levels, with each increment reducing the CPU's propensity toward mistakes.
In the adventure mode, Kirby can enter a door from a few worlds to partake in a Kirby's Air Grind challenge for additional 1-Ups: Ice Cream Island, Butter Building, Yogurt Yard, and Orange Ocean. Kirby receives three lives for first place, two lives for second place, or one life for third place. If he finishes last, Kirby does not win any extra lives.
Trivia
- The Sub-game appears to be heavily based on the Nintendo GameCube racing title, Kirby Air Ride.
