King Dedede and Meta Knight... Many times before have they stood in Kirby's path, even allying with one another on occasion.
Now, to finally defeat Kirby, the old rivals have become partners, taking on Kirby as a battle team! And so they sent Kirby a challenge.

— Opening narration for Story Mode: The Destined Rivals in reference to King Dedede & Meta Knight in Kirby Fighters 2

King Dedede & Meta Knight are a duo boss in Kirby Fighters 2 consisting of King Dedede and Meta Knight paired together as a team. They are the main antagonists of Story Mode: The Destined Rivals, and are fought at the end of each chapter after Chapter 1 (though their first encounter in Chapter 2 is not genuine). Unlike Twin Woods and Duo Edge, King Dedede & Meta Knight have many more attacks that specifically require teamwork to pull off.

In Chapters 2 and 3, King Dedede & Meta Knight are fought on an unnamed Battle Stage that is not selectable for regular play. In Chapter 4, they are battled on the Stage of Destined Rivals, and defeating them there unlocks the stage for regular play as well as unlocking Meta Knight as a playable fighter. In the Final Chapter, they are fought on the Stage of the Partners, and that stage too is unlocked after completing the fight, as well as unlocking King Dedede as a playable fighter.

Role in Story Mode: The Destined Rivals

King Dedede & Meta Knight are the primary antagonists of Story Mode: The Destined Rivals, where they attempt to defeat Kirby by teaming up and battling him atop the Buddy Fighters Tower. Through the Story Mode, Kirby and his buddy first seemingly face them at the end of Chapter 2, only to realiTemplate:Ze that their opponents were two Waddle Dees in disguise. Their first real encounter happens at the end of Chapter 3, where King Dedede & Meta Knight are overpowered and forced to draw back. Later on, at the true Summit of the tower in Chapter 4, King Dedede and Meta Knight fight Kirby again, resorting to a Maxim Tomato to replenish their strength when the battle gets tough, but are again overpowered and defeated.

In the Final Chapter, the duo attempt to battle Kirby one last time, and when their strength starts to diminish, they resort to the power of a cursed object called the Mask of Dark Bonds in a last-ditch attempt to win. Despite the power of this relic, Kirby and his buddy defeat them once more, and use the Buddy Star Blaster to destroy the paired mask and send the two challengers packing into the starry night sky.

Attacks

The following are all of King Dedede & Meta Knight's attacks in Kirby Fighters 2. For the sake of completeness, this table includes the attacks unique to the Waddle Dee substitute battle as well. Note that attack names are conjectural:

King Dedede & Meta Knight's attacks in Kirby Fighters 2
Attack Description Notes
Head Slide & Shuttle Loop King Dedede runs forward and does a Head Slide while Meta Knight flies above and does a Shuttle Loop.
Two Recoil Stars drop from King Dedede on impact.
Gordo Throw and Bat King Dedede and Meta Knight position on opposite sides of the stage.
King Dedede then pulls out one, two or three Gordos and bats them across the stage with his hammer.
Meta Knight strikes the Gordos when they reach him, knocking them back across the stage and leaving a Recoil Star on each hit.
Hammer and Backhand Slash - Triple Slash King Dedede and Meta Knight position themselves at the center of the stage. Once done, King Dedede charges up and slams the ground in front of himself with his hammer, sending out a shockwave and leaving a Recoil Star on impact.
Behind him, Meta Knight throws out four successive sword swipes and finishes with a Crescent Shot projectile that also leaves a Recoil Star.
Piggyback Charge King Dedede performs a Super Dedede Jump to get to one side of the stage while Meta Knight swoops into position above him.
Meta Knight then Piggybacks on King Dedede and starts performing a Hyper Rush multisword strike as King Dedede rushes forward.
After a short distance, King Dedede trips, causing Meta Knight to fall forward and get his sword stuck in the ground, leaving a Recoil Star on impact.
King Dedede must then spend a long moment trying to pull Meta Knight and his sword free, leaving the two wide open for counterattacks.
This move is only used by the Waddle Dee impostors.
Inhale After repositioning to opposite sides of the stage, King Dedede performs an inhale while Meta Knight Guards.
If Kirby or his buddy are caught in the inhale, King Dedede will spit them back out the other side, and Meta Knight will swipe at them to finish the attack.
Tornado Meta Knight strikes his sword into the ground, releasing a small gust of wind that moves toward King Dedede.
When it hits him, a giant tornado sprouts which King Dedede rides in while doing a Hammer Spin, moving across the stage.
Upon completion, King Dedede is left in a daze while Meta Knight holds a Guard.
Only used in Chapter 3 encounter and beyond.
In Chapters 4 and 5, Dedede will move up and down while in the tornado.
Super Dedede Jump and Aerial Crescent Shot Meta Knight flies into the air and holds position briefly.
He then throws out two Crescent Shot projectiles diagonally downward while King Dedede Super Dedede Jumps out of the way.
These attacks leave Recoil Stars on impact.
Only used in Chapter 3 encounter and beyond.
Aerial Crescent Shot and Bat Meta Knight flies into the air and holds position briefly while King Dedede takes the other side of the stage.
Meta Knight then throws out two or more Crescent Shot projectiles diagonally downward while King Dedede charges his hammer.
King Dedede then bats one of the shots to split it into twice as many more projectiles that fan out from him, leaving recoil stars on impact.
Only used in Chapter 3 encounter and beyond.
Force Force and Bat Meta Knight flies into the background and holds position briefly while King Dedede takes one side of the stage.
Meta Knight then conjures four magical boulders and tosses them into a column in front of King Dedede.
King Dedede then bats each of these forward, leaving a recoil star each time.
Only used in Chapter 3 encounter and beyond.
In the Final Chapter, Meta Knight conjures six boulders, and King Dedede bats them into the air to target Kirby.
Duplicate Inhale Attack Meta Knight flies into the background and splits into four copies while King Dedede takes to the air.
King Dedede then inhales all four Meta Knights and spits them out as projectiles at Kirby and his teammate, one by one.
Only used in Chapter 4 encounter and beyond.
Swirling Hyper Crescent Blast After a brief portrait freeze-frame, King Dedede and Meta Knight jump to each-other and grab hold, spinning around in the air as several crescent shots fire out from them.
They then rise up and charge energy before slamming to the ground, creating a huge ripple and explosion that deals massive damage.
All crescent shots and the final explosion leave recoil stars on impact, and King Dedede is dazed after the attack.
Only used in Chapter 4 encounter and beyond, in second phase only.
The freeze-frame only happens during the first instance of the attack.

Trivia

  • As mentioned in the opening narration for Story Mode: The Destined Rivals, this pairing is not the first time that King Dedede and Meta Knight have teamed up to fight Kirby, with the first example of their collaboration being in Kirby's Adventure. However, this does mark the first time they have specifically fought Kirby together at the same time and attempted to coordinate their attacks.
