Kine is one of Kirby's original three Animal Friends, debuting alongside Rick and Coo in Kirby's Dream Land 2 and making his final major appearance in Kirby's Dream Land 3. He is a large, blue ocean sunfish with yellow fins, orange lips and a pair of big, round eyes that are usually wide open. Despite being rarely seen throughout the Kirby series, Kine appears as a recurring character in the anime, Kirby: Right Back at Ya!.

Kine makes his first appearance in Kirby's Dream Land 2 as one of Kirby's three Animal Friends. He is first encountered in the second stage of Ripple Field, where Master Green is guarding him, making him the last of the three friends to be found by Kirby. Apart from appearing in a number of stages, the sunfish is also seen in four level intros: in the Ripple Field intro, he unite with Kirby after being fed an apple; in Iceberg, Kirby leaves him behind in favor of Rick; in Cloudy Park, he lodges onto Kirby while the latter is stuck in a cloud; and finally, in Dark Castle, he apparently falls asleep as Kirby and his friends are preparing to enter the castle.

When teamed up with Kine, Kirby is contained inside the sunfish's mouth. Being a fish, the latter is at a disadvantage on land, where he moves slower than other friends and continuously makes small hops while "walking"; despite this, his jumping skills are equal to those of Rick. Kine's main strengths become apparent underwater, however: while paired up with him, Kirby may inhale foes while underwater, and is also capable of swimming much faster than usual by repeatedly pressing the A button while diving. This increased swimming speed lets Kirby and Kine bypass strong currents, enabling them to reach areas that are otherwise inaccessible, as well as making certain sections of stages easier to survive.

Like other Animal Friends, Kine will enhance any Copy Ability that Kirby possesses while the two are travelling together, turning it into a new, unique power. Unlike other abilities in the game, all of Kine's combination abilities can be used underwater to their full extent.

Kirby's Star Stacker

Kine returns in Kirby's Star Stacker, alongside the other two friends from the previous game. Just like the other animals, he appears as one of the three types of Friend Blocks essential for destroying the various other kinds of blocks. As such, it acts identically to the other two Friend Blocks, but requires other Kine blocks for a reaction to take place.

Apart from being an integral gameplay element, the sunfish is also seen in the various "time out" cutscenes between rounds, where he makes small hops while moving like in Kirby's Dream Land 2, as well as in two of the pictures unlocked by completing certain modes. Finishing Very Hard! mode shows him and Kirby riding across the sea in pirate costumes, and he is seen together with the other Animal Friends in the pictures awarded for completing Super Hard and Insane!.

Kirby's Dream Land 3

In Kirby's Dream Land 3, Kine makes his last major appearance to date, once again acting as an Animal Friend for Kirby to unite with. He is located in the third stage of Grass Land alongside Coo, once more making him one of the final friends to be found. The fish is also seen in the intro of Ripple Field, where he quarrels with ChuChu over which of the two gets to stay united with Kirby, as well as the Hyper Zone intro, where he, together with the other friends and King Dedede, watches as Kirby ascends into space.

Up to and including his ability to bypass water currents, Kine acts the same in this game as he does in his debut appearance, but possesses a slightly different array of combination abilities. He is the preferred target of the blue Propeller enemy, causing it to move faster. Abandoning Kine in favor of a different friend causes him to look devastated, tears appearing in his eyes.

A female version of Kine named Mine appears in the fifth stage of Grass Land. Reuniting her with her male counterpart is required to obtain her Heart Star.

Parasol

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

Although Kine does not appear in person in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, using the Stone-Cutter Power Combo sometimes causes Kirby to transform into an invincible sculpture of him upon activating the ability. Unlike the other statues, the Kine form is immobile apart from being able to turn around, both on land and in water. Using the ability again while transformed shatters the sculpture, returning Kirby to his regular form.

Kirby Super Star Ultra

In Kirby Super Star Ultra, Kine, alongside the other friends from Kirby's Dream Land 2, appears as a statue once more, this time being one of the possible results of using the Stone ability. The Kine sculpture is completely immobile and behaves identically to all other Stone forms, differing from them only in looks.

Kirby Mass Attack

Kine makes a cameo in the Kirby Mass Attack sub-game Kirby Brawlball, a Pinball game with Kirby elements. The sunfish acts as the "stopper" between the flippers at the bottom of the main playing area, serving as a "safety net" by catching Kirby (the ball) in his mouth and spitting him out again when he would otherwise have fallen through the drain. Afterwards, Kine disappears and can only be reactivated by hitting all three mole-like targets on each side of the lower area. Kine is also responsible for bringing a second Kirby into play if the slot machine stops on three Kirbies by spitting the surplus one into the playing field.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land

Kine once more cameos as a Stone transformation in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Instead of receiving his own, seperate statue, however, he is part of a sculpture consisting of all three of Kirby's original Animal Friends (Kine, Rick and Coo). Expectably, this result only differs from other Stone forms in appearance.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

Kine appears as a cameo on the Coo's Forest stage of the Kirby Fighters subgame.

Kirby Fighters Deluxe

Kine retains his role from Kirby Fighters.

Anime

Kine is a recurring character in the anime Kirby: Right Back At Ya!. He is shown to have a crush on Tiff, one of Kirby's friends, at various points, with the episode A Fish Called Kine particularly focusing on this.

Trivia

  • A remix of Kine's theme song from Kirby's Dream Land 2 can be heard in the first stage of Onion Ocean in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.
