Ice is a Copy Ability which allows Kirby to freeze enemies and is primarily obtained by swallowing certain ice-type enemies, such as a Pengy. It primarily allows Kirby to encase foes in a block of ice with his chilly breath, but may also have other uses, depending on the game, such as enabling him to skate over surfaces in its most recent appearance.
Ice is a Copy Ability which allows Kirby to freeze enemies and is primarily obtained by swallowing certain ice-type enemies, such as a Pengy and Chilly. Using this ability, Kirby gains a crown of ice and the ability to freeze foes and cool down fiery obstacles with a stream of frost breath from his mouth. Later games starting with Kirby Super Star would give Ice Kirby an expanded moveset, such as skating along the ground, spinning while breathing ice through the air, or encasing himself in ice as a form of defense.

The ability is not to be confused with Freeze, a similar ability whose moves have been incorporated into the Ice ability in many of the latter's appearances (in a similar manner in which Burning and Fire are frequently combined).
Ice first appeared as a Copy Ability in Kirby's Adventure, and has since been a mainstay in every subsequent main-series game, as well as Kirby Battle Royale. The ability is not to be confused with Freeze, a similar ability whose moves have been incorporated into the Ice ability in many of the latter's appearances (in a similar manner in which Burning and Fire are frequently combined).

Characteristics
Ice is among the oldest copy abilities in Kirby's arsenal, and serves as a natural counterpart to Fire, appearing in a similar number of games to that ability and having its own on and off again partner in the form of the Freeze ability. In its simplest form, the Ice ability allows Kirby to breathe a cone of ice at his opponents to freeze them solid. While Ice's breath attack cannot be controlled as finely as Fire's, the secondary effect is that Kirby can kick enemies he freezes to make them slide forward, potentially defeating other enemies they collide with. Using this ice breath also allows Kirby to cool down fiery hazards like magma blocks, or in Kirby: Squeak Squad, freeze the surface of water. In Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Ice Kirby can even skate on the surface of lava to avoid damage.

Ice's moveset would expand in a number of ways starting with Kirby Super Star, but it would not drift too far from its fundamental character. One notable visual update has Ice Kirby skating along the ground when dashing as opposed to using his regular run. In addition, he gains the ability to use the defensive aura attack characteristic of the Freeze ability, swallow foes and then spit them back out as ice balls, and even encase himself in ice for defense. In Kirby Battle Royale, Ice Kirby even gains the ability to conjure pillars of ice to block his opponents' way. Ice can also be combined easily with other powers and allies, as seen with his Animal Friend pairings, the Power Combos in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, and granting the Blizzard Power Effect to friends in Kirby Star Allies.

Though once granting the Freeze ability instead, Chilly is the most common representative and helper for the Ice ability. Other sources of the ability include Pengy, Mr. Frosty, and more obscure enemies like Emp and Frigis.

Ice was available, along with Freeze, as a Copy Ability in Kirby's Adventure and Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land making it one of the debut abilities. In that game, Ice consisted solely of using freezing breath to turn enemies into ice cubes, then touching them to kick them across the stage to harm anything in their way.

In Kirby's Dream Land 2, Ice is once again a simple move which does not change Kirby's appearance. If Kirby is alone, using Ice functions identically to the way it did in Kirby's Adventure, but if partnered up with one of his animal friends, the move can change its pattern depending on which friend is with him. With Rick, the move functions like an ice shield, protecting on all sides. With Coo, Kirby can breathe ice in a 180 degree area beneath him. With Kine, the move is similar in function to Rick's, but it can be used while moving, and it causes him to freeze over if held for too long.

Ice appears in this game, much the same way it did in Kirby's Dream Land 3, in that Kirby does not actually change appearance or colour unless he is using the ability. Unlike in previous installments however, Kirby spins in place while using the move, making it similar to Freeze. In addition, he can also move slowly while using it, adding to its versatility.

Using the Power Combo system, Kirby can combine Ice with other abilities to varying effect. Combining Ice with Ice creates Ice-Ice, which rolls Kirby up into a big snowball in the same vain as would be seen later in the Snow Bowl Super Ability.

The Ice ability also appears in KRDL KAW, and is obtained through swallowing ice related enemies or touching Copy Essences. In addition to using the Ice ability to defeat enemies, Kirby may also use Ice to neutralise fiery blocks in order to break or walk on them. In addition, a super form of this ability exists by defeating a Super Chilly, yielding the Snow Bowl ability.

Ice would gain its most substantial moveset in this game, most notably gaining the "Ice Ball" move, which allows Kirby to freeze himself solid into a ball and then bowl down his enemies by dashing forward at them. This moveset would carry over into subsequent main-series games, until simplifying again for Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Ice returns in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Here, the ability retains Ice Breath, which can now be aimed freely in different directions in the 3D environment like Fire. The ability to kick frozen enemies to slide them along the ground is also retained. Kicked enemies lightly home in on nearby enemies. Kirby can also use Ice Storm, which leaves behind a trail of ice shards. These shards can be frozen and kicked towards enemies as well. Kirby can use Ice Skate and Ice Storm to freeze water for a short time to travel over it, and he can also use Ice Skate to travel over mud and magma. The ability can also freeze bosses and mid-bosses for a short period of time before thawing out and taking severe damage if Kirby uses the ability enough on them.
During his adventures, Kirby can find blueprints to take to Waddle Dee's Weapons Shop to evolve the Copy Ability into one of two new forms, one being Frosty Ice, and the other being Blizzard Ice. Frosty Ice allows Kirby to create snowmen that resemble Wild Frosty with his Ice Breath and Ice Storm attacks, whereas Blizzard Ice allows Kirby to shoot shards of ice from his mouth from a distance. Ice Storm is also upgraded where icy spikes come out when he performs the move, and his ice shield and trails now damage enemies on contact.
This ability is one of four accessible in the game's demo. It automatically becomes one of its evolved forms, that being Frosty Ice, once the three available stages are complete, but this can be reverted back to the original ability if the player so desires.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Ice Kirby appears as a collectible trophy. In addition, one of Kirby's custom moves in the latter game replaces his inhale with ice breath, referencing the ability and allowing him to freeze his opponents.

Ice makes a handful of appearances in the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!. Here, it is portrayed very similarly to its appearance in the video games, giving Kirby the power to blow frosty breath at his enemies to freeze them solid.

In Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, Ice Kirby makes a fair number of appearances, including in the Japanese-only pilot episode. This ability is very similar to the one in the games, allowing Kirby to breathe a cone of ice at his enemies to freeze them solid. Notably, this ability is often either not enough on its own to defeat a foe, or has to be used in a creative way to defeat them. One example is the Ice Dragon in the episode Dedede's Snow Job, as Ice Kirby's ice breath is ineffective against the creature when used from outside, but is much more effective when used from inside the Ice Dragon's body. Another is the Ice Dragon Robot in Labor Daze, as Kirby ends up defeating it not by attacking it directly, but instead by using his ice breath on the factory's boiler to cause it to crack and burst open, engulfing the robot in flames.

In the Kirby novel series, the Ice ability makes an appearance in Kirby: Big Race in Pupupu Land!, where Kirby obtains it from Mr. Frosty. With this Copy Ability, Kirby uses his Ice Breath to soothe extreme heat, with the effect of freezing objects around him.

In Kirby: Big Race in Pupupu Land!, the big race's second checkpoint has the "Superspicy Gourmet Challenge of Terror", where the contestants must eat a bowl of spicy food. All of the contestants are in extreme pain from the spice, and Kirby gulps up the staff's entire water supply. Even this does not satisfy his burning mouth, so he resorts to inhaling Mr. Frosty. This gives him the Ice ability, which finally satisfies him by making his insides are all cold. Kirby lets out a freezing ice breath at everything around him, which freezes nearby objects like the table and bowls. All the other contestants chomp away at the ice, which finally gets rid of the painful spiciness in their mouths too.

Characteristics[edit]

Using Ice, Kirby can cool down fiery obstacles from a safe distance.

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

KA Ice artwork.png
Artwork from Kirby's Adventure.

Ice is available, along with Freeze, as a Copy Ability in Kirby's Adventure and Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land making it one of the debut abilities in the series. In these games, Ice consists solely of using freezing breath to turn enemies into ice cubes, then touching them to kick them across the stage to harm anything in their way. It is provided by Pengy.

In Kirby's Adventure, Kirby merely changed his color to a light blue when obtaining this ability, as ability hats had not been introduced at this time.

Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]

Kirby using Ice on a Rocky in Kirby's Dream Land 2.

Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

In Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra, Kirby can obtain the Ice ability from Chilly or Mr. Frosty, or through Copy Essences or Copy Essences Deluxe. With the Ice ability equipped, Kirby may create Chilly as a helper. Kirby's visual appearance changes by turning him a light blue color and he wears a hat full of ice crystals. Kirby Super Star was the first game to give Ice Kirby an expanded moveset, combining the attacks of Freeze into the ability as well as adding other tricks such as the twirling "Ice Sprinkle" and the close-up "Ice Suction" attack.

Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]

In Kirby's Dream Land 3, Ice is once again a simple move which does not change Kirby's appearance beyond a color change when he is using it. If Kirby is alone, using Ice functions identically to the way it did in Kirby's Adventure, but if partnered up with one of his animal friends, the move can change its pattern depending on which friend is with him. In this game, Ice is provided by Chilly, Wappa, Bukiset with the ice sword, and the Mid-Boss Yuki. Corori the penguin enemy does not provide Ice in this game (though it would in Kirby and the Forgotten Land).

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

Ice appears in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, much the same way it did in Kirby's Dream Land 3, in that Kirby does not actually change appearance or color unless he is using the ability. Unlike in previous installments however, Kirby spins in place while using the move, making it similar to Freeze. In addition, he can also move slowly while using it, adding to its versatility.

Using the Power Combo system, Kirby can combine Ice with other abilities to varying effect. Combining Ice with itself creates Ice-Ice, which rolls Kirby up into a big snowball in the same vein as would be seen later in the Snow Bowl Super Ability. Other combos include Ice-Spark, which turns Kirby into a refrigerator that spits out food, Ice-Cutter, which gives Kirby a pair of ice skates, and Burn-Ice, which freezes Kirby and then thaws him with fire in a lackluster offensive capability.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]

Ice appears in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, this time without its Freeze counterpart. It is relatively unchanged from its appearance in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, and can be obtained from Pengy, the Ice Shadow Kirby, and Mr. Flosty[sic].

Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]

In Kirby: Squeak Squad, Ice can be used to freeze the surface of water.

Ice appears again in Kirby: Squeak Squad, following its appearance in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror. An Ability Scroll can be obtained which allows Kirby to angle his cone of frost while breathing it. He can also use a bubbled ice essence to infuse the Bomb or Sword abilities with ice powers if he has the scrolls for those abilities as well.

Exclusively in this title, Kirby gains the ability to freeze the surface of water using his ice breath.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

The Ice ability also appears in Kirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake, Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, and is obtained through swallowing ice related enemies or touching Copy Essences. In addition to using the Ice ability to defeat enemies, Kirby may also use Ice to neutralize fiery blocks in order to break or walk on them. Aesthetically, Kirby's appearance changes only with an addition of a ice crown.

Additionally, in the latter game, Ice is compatible with the Robobot Armor, forming the potent Ice Mode.

Kirby Battle Royale[edit]

Ice-skating is pretty cool, isn't it?! I just love those spinny jumps! It's fun seeing frozen foes slide to their doom when you throw them!
— Knuckle Joe's comment in Kirby Battle Royale

Ice is one of the abilities available in Kirby Battle Royale, being the last one unlocked in Dedede's Cake Royale. It is distinguished in that repeated hits to foes will freeze them solid. When picking up and tossing a frozen foe, they will slide, and take additional damage when they hit a wall or other opponent. The Ice Wall ability also allows Kirby to create a barrier which lasts a few seconds.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land[edit]

Ice Kirby battling a Corori in Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Hey Kirby! Why don't you stop that monster by givin' it the cold shoulder?!
— Chef Kawasaki, in Combat Kirby

 This box: view  talk  edit
