Hammer is an ability which provides Kirby with a wooden mallet to wield against foes and obstacles. Its mechanics work similar to the Sword ability, though Hammer is slower, yet more powerful. First appearing in Kirby's Adventure, it is one of Kirby's oldest copy abilities in the series. Oddly, while most Copy Abilities were given a hat in Kirby Super Star, Hammer Kirby's sprite remained unaltered, except for the hammer itself. This was changed in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, which depicts Hammer Kirby with a white-blue striped headband. Hammer is a somewhat rare ability, since it can only be obtained from the mini boss Bonkers, Dygclops, an enemy which exclusively appears in the boss fight against Heavy Mole, and from bubbles in Kirby: Squeak Squad. It is one of the few abilities that can be used underwater, and it is also one of the two abilities that can push wooden Posts into the ground and destroy metal blocks.

Hammer is a Copy Ability which provides Kirby with a wooden mallet to wield against foes and obstacles. Its mechanics work similar to the Sword ability, though it is slower, yet more powerful. First appearing in Kirby's Adventure, it is one of Kirby's oldest copy abilities in the series. Oddly, while most Copy Abilities were given a hat in Kirby Super Star, Hammer Kirby's sprite remained unaltered, except for the hammer itself. This was changed in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, which depicts Hammer Kirby with a white rope headband. In that same game, the hat would also appear coiled with alternating white and blue strands, and this version of the hat would become standard going forward.

Hammer is a somewhat rare ability: normally, it can only be obtained from a mid-boss, Bonkers. There are rare instances of it being obtained from other sources, however: Heavy Mole's golden missiles, a discarded hammer from Storo, a hammer from Magolor's Calling Shot attack, Mookies, and other sources such as a Copy Essence can provide it. It is one of the few abilities that can be used underwater, and it is also one of the few abilities that can push stakes into the ground and destroy metal blocks.

Hammer also builds the base of the fighting style of King Dedede, Kirby's arch-rival and occasional nemesis. Several descriptions of the ability also imply that Kirby's hammer is from the King himself, which in the cases of Kirby Super Star Ultra and Kirby and the Forgotten Land is sometimes a literal statement.

Hammers also build the base of the fighting style of King Dedede, Kirby's arch-rival and occasional nemesis.
Characteristics
Hammer is among the original set of Copy Abilities which appeared in Kirby's Adventure, and since then has not changed much from its fundamental function and role. In its most basic form, the Hammer ability can be seen as a stronger but slower and lower-range form of the Sword ability, allowing Kirby to make an overhead swing or a spinning aerial (or underwater) swing to pound his enemies for massive damage. The hammer can also be used to break away metal blocks and pound stakes, which makes it useful to collect hidden items or access secret chambers. To use this ability effectively, Kirby needs to anticipate when his enemies might strike and hit them in the opportune moment, as any miscalculation will leave him wide open for counterattack. Masters of the Hammer ability can dish out serious damage in a very short amount of time, making Hammer a common pick for completing game modes like The Arena quickly.

Game Appearances
Starting with Kirby Super Star, Hammer would gain a wider variety of moves, distinguishing it from Sword and other weapon-based abilities. Among these are the ground-covering "Hammer Swing", the boss-slaying fiery upper swing called "Hammer Flip", and the move of last resort: "Hammer Throw", which gives Kirby a strong ranged attack at the expense of the ability itself. Hammer's most common provider and helper representative is the mid-boss Bonkers, making Hammer one of the few abilities which is not typically provided by regular foes.
Kirby's Adventure/Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
Kirby's Adventure marks the game of Hammer Kirby's first appearance, and the ability also returns in the game's remake, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Like its lighter counterpart Sword it comes with two different attacks: A heavy swing when used on the ground, and a somersault attack when used in mid-air or underwater. The icon for the Hammer ability depicts Kirby during a jump, with a big hammer raised into the air and a determined expression on his face. The icon was changed for Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, where it shows Kirby with his headband, holding and swinging a giant mallet with both hands.

Hammer reappears in Kirby Super Star and its remake Kirby Super Star Ultra. Like most Copy Abilities its moveset has changed and improved from its previous incarnation. Aside from regular attacks, the Hammer can now be charged and release a flame attack, which can even light fuses, and it can even be thrown at enemies, which, however, causes Kirby to lose the Hammer ability. Hammer Kirby can also summon Bonkers who then acts as a Helper.

The Hammer ability also plays a somewhat special role during Kirby's fight against Masked Dedede in Kirby Super Star Ultra. Before the fight begins, King Dedede offers Kirby a Hammer to battle, which is a spoof of Meta Knight's habit to give Kirby a Sword before the battle begins. Kirby can ditch the hammer after collecting it, though, and fight Masked Dedede the regular way. Hammer Kirby makes another appearance during the introduction cutscene of The True Arena.

The hammer ability makes its next appearance in Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, where it is again one of the rarer Copy Abilities and can be obtained only from Bonkers, after Kirby has defeated him in a duel. The game actually keeps most of Hammer's moveset from Kirby Super Star intact, removing only Hammer Throw and Ultra-Giant Swing. Kirby could also use a hammer through having the very versatile Smash ability, the only disadvantage being that this hammer could not be used underwater.

Hammer makes another appearance in Kirby: Squeak Squad. Here, it can be dropped occasionally by Storo, in addition to Bonkers. Acquiring the Ability Scroll for Hammer grants an additional move, where Kirby can charge his hammer swing, making the hammer bigger before it comes down, dealing additional damage.

Hammer makes an appearance in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, obtained primarily from Bonkers. Hammer Kirby features its typical hammer usage move set, including a hammer throw that will sacrifice Kirby's ability. In addition to the standard Hammer ability, in some stages, Kirby may obtain a super ability called the Grand Hammer, obtained from Super Bonkers, which can destroy and hit stumps that are particularly large. King Dedede in this game has a move-set almost identical to that of Hammer Kirby, though he can perform the Hammer Throw infinitely.

Hammer makes an appearance in Kirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake, Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, obtained primarily from Bonkers. Hammer Kirby features its typical hammer usage moveset, including a hammer throw that will sacrifice Kirby's ability, as well as a few new moves such as the Hammer Twirl. In addition to the standard Hammer ability, in some stages, Kirby may obtain a Super Ability called Grand Hammer, obtained from Super Bonkers, which can destroy and hit stakes that are particularly large. King Dedede has a moveset very similar to that of Hammer Kirby, though he can perform the Hammer Throw as many times as he wishes without losing the ability.

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Hammer Flip is chargeable, and can additionally allow the user to move while charging, which comes from Kirby Star Allies, and like the Sizzle element, the hammer is still fiery and can damage enemies while charging. This change also applies to King Dedede, having a chargeable Dedede Hammer Flip while also being able to move during the charge.

Hammer once again returns in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, only obtainable from Bonkers and Bonkers DX. It functions much like it did in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, but with the Triple Hammer attack removed from Hammer's moveset starting with this game and persisting until Kirby and the Forgotten Land. King Dedede once again uses a very similar moveset, though with a few additional moves to allow him to solve some extra puzzles that Hammer alone could not. Additionally, Hammer Kirby appears as a collectable keychain, using his sprite from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.

Hammer also appears in Kirby Fighters as a selectable ability.

Hammer is one of the abilities usable in this action-multiplayer title. Hammer Kirby is notable for his attack power compared to other abilities. His Hammer Flip also has two levels of charge - the second one being capable of KOing in one hit - though it takes some time to charge up.

Hammer is one of the abilities usable in Kirby Battle Royale. To obtain it for general use, the player needs to spend 500 Battle Coins, and to use it in Dedede's Cake Royale, it needs to be unlocked by obtaining 50 League Points in the Gold League. Hammer Kirby is notable for his attack power compared to other abilities. His Hammer Flip also has two levels of charge - the second one being capable of defeating an opponent in one hit - though it takes some time to charge up.

There are three additional pieces of Headgear for the Hammer ability in this game. These are the "Dedede Hammer", the "Toy Hammer", and the "Grand Hammer Replica".

Hammer returns in this title. While it is largely the same as it was in previous main series titles, the Hammer Flip has been changed somewhat. Kirby can now move and jump once while charging it, similar to the variant in the Smash ability and Hammer Lord's version. Additionally, the hammer can be charged to several levels before releasing for very high damage output. However, if Kirby charges for too long, the hammer's head will actually break. Even if this happens, Kirby can still swing the headless hammer to deal a small amount of damage. Afterward, the hammer will repair itself.
Hammer returns in Kirby Star Allies. While it is largely the same as it was in previous main series titles, the Hammer Flip has been changed somewhat—Kirby can now move and jump once while charging it, similar to the variant in the Smash ability, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, and Hammer Lord's version. Additionally, the hammer can be charged to several levels before releasing for very high damage output. However, if Kirby charges for too long, the hammer's head will actually break. Even if this happens, Kirby can still swing the handle to deal a very small amount of damage. Afterward, the hammer will repair itself.

Hammer can also be infused with the five Power Effects: Blizzard, Bluster, Sizzle, Splash, and Zap. Due to this however, Kirby's hammer no longer catches on fire when using Hammer Flip by default. Bonkers has a nearly identical moveset to Hammer Kirby in this game, but much like King Dedede, he has an unlimited number of Hammer Throws.

The Hammer ability returns in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. This is the first game to introduce a regular enemy that provides Hammer: Mookie. Like in previous games, Kirby can use the Hammer ability to pound down stakes to solve puzzles and can also make use of the Giant Swing and Hammer Flip as attacks. Unlike in previous games, however, the Hammer Twirl, Hammer Swing, Ultra-Giant Swing, Hammer Throw, and Underwater Wheel techniques are no longer available. In addition, Hammer can also evolve into one of three additional forms - those being Toy Hammer, Wild Hammer, and Masked Hammer - or it can be powered up, at Waddle Dee's Weapons Shop.

Super Smash Bros. series
In the Super Smash Bros. series, starting with Super Smash Bros. Melee, Kirby uses his Hammer as his forward special attack. The exact nature of the hammer attack varies between games, as follows:
*In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Kirby can use a single lateral hammer swing on the ground, or performs a Giant Swing in the air.
*In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Kirby can use a single lateral hammer swing on the ground, or two such swings in the air.
*In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Kirby uses the Hammer Flip technique, allowing him to charge his hammer with flame and then release it later for a big hit, though severely limiting his movement options and potentially damaging himself while charging it. This form of Hammer Flip would later become the standard version in the Kirby series itself, starting with Kirby Star Allies, with minor adjustments.
Other
Hammer Lord
Hammer also appears in the Clash series of spin-off titles as Hammer Lord. Functionally, these two abilities are the same, though there are a few key differences. Hammer Lord is much slower on his feet than standard Hammer Kirby, and cannot hover very well. Additionally, Hammer Lord's Hammer Flip can be charged to three levels of power to inflict massive damage, which can only be topped by the Team Meteor. Lastly, Hammer Lord cannot use the Hammer Throw technique.

{{Infobox-Anime Copy Ability
As many others, the Hammer ability appears in the anime Kirby: Right Back at Ya!. Kirby's transformation into Hammer Kirby is triggered whenever he inhales a mallet, which ends up being the personal hammer of King Dedede most of the time. The hammer ability makes three appearances in total during all 100 episodes. During the transformation, Kirby generates a smaller mallet and dons a headband which looks similar, but not exactly like the one he wears in the games. The main differences are the location of the headband's tie, which is located on the left side of Kirby's forehead instead of behind his head, and the colour which is plain white instead of striped. While wielding the Hammer, Kirby usually shows a great potential of strength and is able to deal heavy damage against one or more foes. His repertoire ranges from basic hammer attacks to advanced techniques like Hammer Bash, Giant Swing and the particularly strong Hammer Throw, which serves as a finishing move.

That is Hammer Kirby!
The Hammer ability makes three appearances in the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, in the episodes Dedede's Pet Threat, Goin' Bonkers, and Shell-Shocked. It functions largely the same as it does in the games, though Kirby gains a solely white knotted headband. Kirby gains this ability by inhaling a hammer, whether it be from King Dedede or Bonkers. When Kirby gains this ability, he is typically able to dispatch his opponent(s) easily - which matches the power of the Hammer ability in the games - though it takes several concerted swings and then a Hammer Throw to crack the shell of the potent Maimaigon.

Notably, during Hammer Kirby's transformation sequence, he first cycles through several different weapons before finally landing on the hammer. These weapons include a serrated voulge, a trident with extra spikes, a battleaxe, a battle-rake, a demi-lune, and a quarterstaff.

Role in the series
<gallery>
The Hammer ability appears for the first time during the episode Dedede's Pet Threat. After King Dedede caused his pet-Scarfies to mutate by letting them eat the special food he received along with them, the Scarfies corner King Dedede and Escargoon on a balcony. King Dedede furiously tries to fight them off with his hammer, and when Kirby, Meta Knight, Tiff, and Tuff arrive on the scene, Tiff orders Kirby to inhale the King's hammer, which triggers Kirby's transformation. As Hammer Kirby, he is able to take on the Scarfies and knock the food that caused them to mutate out of them. That way he manages to get rid of the Scarfy plague.

The next appearance of Hammer takes place in Goin' Bonkers. In this episode Kirby has to fight against Bonkers who got turned into a Demon Beast by Nightmare Enterprises. Kirby is able to transform by inhaling Bonkers' mallet, though he only succeeds the second time he tries it after Tiff caused Bonkers' to lose his grip. While using powerful strikes, Kirby manages to trigger Bonkers' emotions and memories, thereby reverting Nightmare Enterprises' treatment and allowing Bonkers to return to his original self.

Hammer appears for the last time in Shell-Shocked when Kirby battles Maimaigon. While almost getting eaten by the beast, Kirby manages to inhale King Dedede's mallet once again, turning him into Hammer Kirby. He proceeds to use attacks like Hammer Bash against the giant snail, but the weapon is not able to penetrate the metal shell and do any damage at all. By using his most powerful hammer attack, Hammer Throw, he is finally able to crack open Maimaigon's shell and defeat the creature.
Trivia
*The headband that Hammer Kirby wears is a reference to the headband worn during traditional mochi pounding.
*Hammer Kirby was going to be redesigned in the cancelled Kirby game for Nintendo GameCube to instead wear a construction helmet. However, the idea was abandoned along with the game.
*Hammer is almost universally regarded as the best Copy Ability for inflicting damage quickly. Hammer Flip in particular is one of the most damaging attacks in the entire series that is not single-use.
*Despite being one of the most recurring Copy Abilities and having a 3D model in Kirby Super Star Ultras cutscenes, Hammer Kirby did not have 3D artwork outside of in-game renders until Kirby Fighters 2.
*In Kirby Star Allies, if Hammer Kirby is chosen on the character select screen in The Ultimate Choice, Hammer Throw can be used infinitely; however, if Hammer is obtained by copying Bonkers as normal Kirby, Hammer Throw will still cause him to lose the ability.

This article is about the Copy Ability. For the item in Kirby Air Ride, see Hammer (item).

Characteristics[edit]

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

KNiDL Hammer icon.png

Kirby's Adventure marks Hammer Kirby's first appearance, and the ability also returns in the game's remake, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Like its lighter counterpart, Sword, it comes with two different attacks: A heavy swing when used on the ground, and a somersault attack when used in midair or underwater. The icon for the Hammer ability depicts Kirby during a jump, with a big hammer raised into the air and a determined expression on his face. The icon was changed for Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, where it shows Kirby with his headband, holding and swinging a giant mallet with both hands.

Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

Hammer KSSU Icon.png

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]

Kirby attacking Moley using Hammer in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror

The Hammer ability makes its next appearance in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, where it is again one of the rarer Copy Abilities and can be obtained only from Bonkers, after Kirby has defeated him in a duel. Unlike in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, most of Hammer's moveset from Kirby Super Star is intact, removing only Hammer Throw and Ultra-Giant Swing. Kirby can also use a hammer via the very versatile Smash ability, the only disadvantage being that this hammer cannot be used underwater.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

Grand Hammer is the Super Ability-equivalent to Hammer, found in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

Kirby Fighters Deluxe[edit]

Hammer appears as one of the selectable Copy Abilities in Kirby Fighters Deluxe, having an identical look and function to its previous appearance.

Hammer Kirby's Rare Outfit replaces his headband with a black-yellow striped one, which are the contrast colors of his original white-blue one. In addition, the Rare Outfit replaces his original wooden hammer with a metal one that makes metal hitting sound effects on impact.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

Kirby swimming with the Hammer ability in Kirby: Planet Robobot

Hammer returns as an ability in Kirby: Planet Robobot, though it is rather rare. In addition, there is a custom variant of Hammer that makes Kirby resemble King Dedede, unlockable by scanning Dedede's amiibo in the game. In addition, the sub-game Team Kirby Clash features a variant of Hammer Kirby called Hammer Lord.

Kirby Battle Royale[edit]

A big hammer and a headband. That look really suits you! If you've got a hammer, take a swing! Not at me, though!
— Knuckle Joe's comment in Kirby Battle Royale

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Kirby breaks his hammer by charging Hammer Flip too long.

Kirby Fighters 2[edit]

Hammer returns in Kirby Fighters 2 as a selectable ability for Kirby, unlocked after attaining a Fighters Rank of 13. Its moveset is largely the same as before, though like in previous Kirby Fighters games, the Hammer Throw technique cannot be used. In addition, the Hammer ability comes with two unlockable Rare Hats, those being the Black-Steel Hammer from Kirby Fighters Deluxe and the Masked Dedede Hammer 2.0 from Super Kirby Clash.

For more precise competitive-oriented information on the Hammer ability in Kirby Fighters 2, see Mizuumi Wiki's page.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land[edit]

Kirby using Hammer on a Rabiroo in Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Kirby making use of the Hammer Flip technique in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

In the Super Smash Bros. series, starting with Super Smash Bros. Melee, Kirby uses his Hammer as his forward special attack. The exact nature of the hammer attack varies between games, as follows:

 • In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Kirby can use a single lateral hammer swing on the ground, or performs a Giant Swing in the air.
 • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Kirby can use a single lateral hammer swing on the ground, or two such swings in the air.
 • In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros.

Other[edit]

Main article: Hammer Lord

Hammer also appears in the Clash series of spin-off titles as Hammer Lord. Functionally, these two abilities are the same, though there are a few key differences. Hammer Lord is much slower on his feet than standard Hammer Kirby, and cannot hover very well. Additionally, Hammer Lord's Hammer Flip can be charged to three levels of power to inflict massive damage, which can only be topped by the Team Meteor. Lastly, Hammer Lord cannot use the Hammer Throw technique.

That is Hammer Kirby!
— Meta Knight in Dedede's Pet Threat

Trivia[edit]

 • The headband that Hammer Kirby wears is a reference to the headband worn during traditional mochi pounding.
 • Hammer Kirby was going to be redesigned in the cancelled Kirby game for Nintendo GameCube to instead wear a construction helmet. However, the idea was abandoned along with the game.
 • Hammer is almost universally regarded as the best Copy Ability for inflicting damage quickly. Hammer Flip in particular is one of the most damaging attacks in the entire series that is not single-use.
 • Despite being one of the most recurring Copy Abilities and having a 3D model in Kirby Super Star Ultra's cutscenes, Hammer Kirby did not have 3D artwork outside of in-game renders until Kirby Fighters 2.
 • In Kirby Star Allies, if Hammer Kirby is chosen on the character select screen in The Ultimate Choice, Hammer Throw can be used infinitely; however, if Hammer is obtained by copying Bonkers as normal Kirby, Hammer Throw will still cause him to lose the ability.
