Gordos are a common enemy in the Kirby series, having appeared in every such game in the main series, along with most of the spin-offs. They typically take the appearance of floating blue or black balls with large eyes and spikes around their perimeter.

Gordos are completely immune to any attacks thrown at them; at best projectiles will not penetrate them, at worst the attacker will be damaged in return. As such they are best avoided, not confronted. However this is often easier said than done; Gordos tend to sit in corridors, bounce back and forth between two solid objects vertically or horizontally, circle around blocks, or bounce along the ground affected by gravity, and generally block Kirby's path.

While Gordos cannot be destroyed, they can sometimes be dealt with. If a Gordo is bouncing around a hallway, destroying the block it bounces against will cause it to leave. Many of Kirby's attacks leave him temporarily invincible (like burning or wheel), allowing him to dash through a row of Gordos.

Gordos can be part of the pool of available minions for bosses to produce. Whispy Woods and his relatives are the most common examples of enemies who will occasionally drop Gordos as hazards for Kirby to avoid. Gordos dropped in this way typically do not last for long, and will bounce off-screen after a little while.

Notable game appearances

Kirby's Dream Land

Gordos first appeared in this Game Boy title, along with many other foes. Here is where its role as an invincible hazard is established, and it is usually seen either holding in place or moving in set patterns.

Unlike many other enemies, Gordo is not replaced by anything else in the Extra Game. However, it now deals a whopping three bars of damage to Kirby, which is more than any other enemy or hazard in the game, which all deal only one bar.

Kirby's Adventure/Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land

Gordo returns in this title, gaining a somewhat yellow colTemplate:Oration, though its behavior and properties are unchanged. However, it now consistently does only one bar of damage to Kirby, just like everything else.

This was the first game to establish the notion that certain Gordos could be made to leave the screen by removing Star Blocks on their path.

Kirby's Dream Land 2

In Kirby's Dream Land 2, Gordos return. A mid-boss named Captain Stitch appears as well, who resembles a Gordo.

Kirby's Dream Land 3

In addition to being standard hazards, Gordos also appear as part of several of the mini-games that Kirby and his Animal Friends can play on their adventure. Gordos here are depicted in several different colTemplate:Ors, along with several different faces, depending on the game.

Kirby Air Ride

Gordos on the battlefield in Kirby Air Ride

Gordos appear in Kirby Air Ride as items called Gold Spikes and an indestructible enemy while the players are racing. Kirby can obtain Gold Spikes only in City Trial, by breaking green boxes or in Destruction Derby. Once Kirby obtains this item, he can throw up to three Gordos ahead of him. After being thrown, the Gordos grow to giant sizes and inflict heavy damage to nearby objects, including the Air Ride machines of enemies and the rider who threw them, though they disappear after a set time. Kirby can drop this item if he collects a different item or Copy Ability, or by getting attacked, and they will not grow if dropped in this way, though they will still damage anyone who touches them.

Kirby Squeak Squad

Gordos appear in this game, looking and acting much the way they did in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Since they are invulnerable enemies, they cannot be possessed by Ghost Kirby.

Oddly, there is one particular point in Stage 1 of Gamble Galaxy where Kirby is prompted to jump into a barrel to avoid a wall of passing Gordos. This is the only time in the game (and the series by extension) where Kirby is ever prompted to do such a thing.

Kirby Mass Attack

In addition to normal Gordos, massive Gordos can appear on occasion, capable of destroying blocks they came in contact with.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

A ghost variant, known as a Ghost Gordo, debuted in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. It functions similarly to a Gordo, but is invisible unless viewed through a mirror. An insectoid variant of the Gordo also exists in Royal Road.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

This title features a novelty object known as the Gordo Catapult in a couple stages. With the help of the Robobot Armor, Kirby can launch a giant Gordo from the catapult at various objects in the distance.

Kirby Star Allies

In Kirby Star Allies Gordos can be defeated if an obstacle crushes them.

In addition, Parallel Dedede uses an attack involving Gordos.

Super Smash Bros. series

Gordos appear in several locations and settings in the Super Smash Bros. games, starting with Brawl. King Dedede is able to use a special move involving Gordos in each game he appears in as a fighter. In Brawl, he had a chance to throw a Gordo as part of his Waddle Dee Toss technique, which dealt major damage. In subsequent Smash Bros. games, this move was changed to Gordo Throw, which consistently involves Gordos, but with the added caveat of other fighters being able to knock them back using most attacks.

In The Subspace Emissary, an enemy called Jyk can be found which operates exactly like a Gordo would, and looks similar. Gordo also appears as a sticker in this game, and applies a +5 bonus to attack when used by any Kirby series fighter.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Gordos appear in Smash Run, acting as they always have, and serving as a hazard to be avoided. They can damage enemies in addition to the playable fighter, however.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Gordo appears as a spirit. Specifically, Gordo is an Advanced-level Shield-type spirit with no additional effects. It cannot be paired with any support spirits, but has somewhat higher stats to compensate for this. Its spirit battle involves fighting against three invisible King Dededes who continuously use the Gordo Throw move on the Green Greens stage.

They won't even budge if Kirby tries to inhale them - they're the definitive obstacle. In addition, they're covered in spikes so they damage whoever touches them. They're found stopped in groups, blocking narrow passageways, etc. Nothing's harder to get by than an encampment of Gordos.

Trivia

  • The Super Smash Bros. Brawl trophy description incorrectly states that Gordos do not move. This is only the case for some Gordos.
  • An enemy known as Unibō has a similar appearance of a Gordo. Unlike Gordos, Unibō are not invincible, but they can be only defeated by Inviclbe Mario or by kicking a Koopa shell. However, these Gordo-related enemies are only found in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.
