'''Gordo''' is a common [[enemy]] in the [[Kirby (series)|''Kirby'' series]], having appeared in every game in the main series as well as many spin-offs. He typically takes the appearance of a floating blue or black ball with large eyes and spikes around his perimeter. He is completely immune to any attack in almost all cases and [[damage]]s characters who make contact with him. As such, he effectively functions as an obstacle that the player must avoid. He tends to generally block [[Kirby]]'s path by sitting in corridors, bouncing back and forth between two solid objects vertically or horizontally, circling around blocks, or bouncing along the ground affected by gravity. Additionally, Gordos can be produced by several [[boss]]es as attacks, usually by [[Whispy Woods]] and his relatives; Gordos produced in this way typically do not last for long, and will bounce off-screen after a short while.

Gordos are completely immune to any attacks thrown at them; at best projectiles will not penetrate them, at worst the attacker will be damaged in return. As such they are best avoided, not confronted. However this is often easier said than done; Gordos tend to sit in corridors, bounce back and forth between two solid objects vertically or horizontally, circle around blocks, or bounce along the ground affected by gravity, and generally block [[Kirby]]'s path.
While Gordo typically cannot be destroyed, he can sometimes be dealt with through other means. If one is bouncing around a hallway, destroying a specific [[block]] he bounces against will cause him to leave, or in some cases, leaving one or more will keep him trapped in a small unreachable space, allowing Kirby to move around safely. Many of Kirby's attacks leave him temporarily invincible (like those gained with [[Burning]] or [[Wheel]]), allowing him to dash through Gordos without taking damage, though the Gordos themselves remain unharmed.

While Gordos cannot be destroyed, they can sometimes be dealt with. If a Gordo is bouncing around a hallway, destroying the block it bounces against will cause it to leave. Many of Kirby's attacks leave him temporarily invincible (like [[Burning]] or [[Wheel]]), allowing him to dash through a row of Gordos.

Gordos can be part of the pool of available minions for [[boss]]es to produce. [[Whispy Woods]] and his relatives are the most common examples of enemies who will occasionally drop [[Gordo]]s as hazards for Kirby to avoid. Gordos dropped in this way typically do not last for long, and will bounce off-screen after a little while.

===''Kirby's Dream Land''===
Gordos first appeared in this [[Game Boy]] title, along with many other foes. Here is where its role as an invincible hazard is established, and it is usually seen either holding in place or moving in set patterns.

[[File:KDL Gordo sprite.png]] Gordo first appeared in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land]]'', where his role as an invincible [[hazard]] was established. He is usually seen either holding in place or moving in set patterns. Gordos deal a whopping three bars of [[damage]] to [[Kirby]], which is more than any other [[enemy]] or hazard in the game, as they all deal only one or two bars. Notably, if Kirby touches the Gordos blocking the doors to the boss rematches in [[Mt. Dedede]], he will be immediately defeated, regardless of how much life he had at the time.

Unlike many other enemies, Gordo is not replaced by anything else in the [[Extra Game]]. However, it now deals a whopping three bars of damage to Kirby, which is more than any other enemy or hazard in the game, which all deal only one or two bars.
In the [[Extra Game]], [[Whispy Woods]] drops Gordos in addition to [[apple]]s and [[Lololo & Lalala]] can push Gordos instead of their usual boxes. Unlike many other enemies, Gordo is not replaced by anything else in this mode.

Here, he gains a somewhat yellow coloration, though his behavior and properties are mostly unchanged. However, he now consistently does only one bar of damage to Kirby, just like everything else. ''Kirby's Adventure'' was the first game to establish the notion that certain Gordos could be made to leave the screen by removing [[Star Block]]s on their path, or that Kirby could bypass Gordos using certain [[Copy Ability]] attacks, such as [[Burning]].

In the battle with [[Whispy Woods]], Gordos may occasionally be dropped. If they hit the flippers, the flipper hit will be disabled for a moment. Kirby can bump into them to deflect them.

[[File:KDCGordo.png]] In ''[[Kirby's Dream Course]]'', Gordo can be seen in various courses holding still in the air. Like his other appearances, Gordo cannot be attacked, and Kirby or [[Keeby]] will take damage if they try to attack him. Gordo also appears as one of the five placeholder icons on the scoreboards for each course.

In this game, Gordo has a different design. His spherical body is bulkier, and his spikes poke in and out of visible holes.

One of the four courses in the 2P Game - the [[Gordo Course]] - features Gordos prominently.

Gordos appear in ''[[Kirby Air Ride]]'' as items called '''Gold Spikes''' and an indestructible enemy while the players are racing. Kirby can obtain Gold Spikes only in City Trial, by breaking [[Container|green boxes]] or in [[Destruction Derby]]. Once Kirby obtains this item, he can throw up to three Gordos ahead of him. After being thrown, the Gordos grow to giant sizes and inflict heavy damage to nearby objects, including the Air Ride machines of enemies and the rider who threw them, though they disappear after a set time. Kirby can drop this item if he collects a different item or [[Copy Ability]], or by getting attacked, and they will not grow if dropped in this way, though they will still damage anyone who touches them.
Gordos appear in ''[[Kirby Air Ride]]'', serving the same purpose as usual. They are often found floating in place creating spiky barriers on [[Air Ride]] courses, though are usually found only in the Time Attack modes. As expected, they cannot be inhaled or defeated, and must simply be avoided.

<nowiki>*</nowiki>Even though Gordos don't appear directly in Dimension IV, Parallel Dedede can still hit them with his hammer.

In [[smashwiki:Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary|The Subspace Emissary]], an enemy called [[smashwiki:Jyk|Jyk]] can be found which operates exactly like a Gordo would, and looks similar. Gordo also appears as a sticker in this game, and applies a +5 bonus to attack when used by any ''Kirby'' series fighter.
===''Kirby Fighters 2''===
[[File:KF2 Dedede and Meta fight 1.jpg|thumb|250px|[[King Dedede & Meta Knight]] batting Gordos around in ''Kirby Fighters 2'']]
Gordo plays a number of different roles in ''[[Kirby Fighters 2]]''. He retains his previous role as an item in the form of the [[Gordo Ball]]. In addition, he is used as a stage hazard in the [[Gourmet Go Go]] and [[Dedede Arena]] stages, as well as being used in the boss fights against [[Twin Woods]] and the variants of [[King Dedede & Meta Knight]].

In ''[[Super Smash Bros. 4|Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS]]'', Gordos appear in [[smashwiki:Smash Run|Smash Run]], acting as they always have, and serving as a hazard to be avoided. They can damage enemies in addition to the playable fighter, however.
In [[Story Mode: The Destined Rivals]], there is a special item called the Anti-Gordo Charm, which Kirby can use to take less damage from Gordo Balls and other Gordo collisions.

In ''[[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate]]'', Gordo appears as a spirit. Specifically, Gordo is an Advanced-level Shield-type spirit with no additional effects. It cannot be paired with any support spirits, but has somewhat higher stats to compensate for this. Its spirit battle involves fighting against three invisible King Dededes who continuously use the Gordo Throw move on the [[Green Greens]] stage.
===''Kirby and the Forgotten Land''===
[[File:KatFL Gordo screenshot.png|thumb|100px|Gordo in ''Kirby and the Forgotten Land''.]]
Gordo appears as an enemy in ''[[Kirby and the Forgotten Land]]'', along with a new variant called [[Gordo Bar]]. In addition to his role as a regular enemy, he also plays a role in the attacks of [[Phantom Tropic Woods]] and [[Phantom King Dedede]]. Gordo also appears as a collectible [[figure]] and in the [[Tilt and Roll Kirby]] [[Sub-Game]].

Gordo returns as an enemy in ''[[Kirby's Dream Buffet]]'', here given the appearance of a jawbreaker to match the food motif. He retains his role as an invincible obstacle, and will stun Kirby for a moment if the two happen to collide. In addition to appearing in race modes, Gordo can also appear as a hazard in the minigame and Battle Royale stages.

Gordo also appears on a [[Character Treat]], using his [[sprite]] from ''[[Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land]]''.

===''Super Smash Bros.'' series===
Gordos appear in several locations and settings in the ''[[Super Smash Bros. (series)|Super Smash Bros.]]'' games, starting with ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]]''. [[King Dedede]] is able to use a special move involving Gordos in each game he appears in as a fighter. In ''Super Smash Bros. Brawl'', he has a chance to throw a Gordo as part of his [[smashwiki:Waddle Dee Toss|Waddle Dee Toss]] technique, which dealt major damage. In subsequent ''Smash Bros.'' games, this move was changed to [[smashwiki:Gordo Throw|Gordo Throw]], which consistently involves Gordos, but with the added caveat of other fighters being able to knock them back using most attacks. In [[smashwiki:Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary|The Subspace Emissary]], an enemy called [[smashwiki:Jyk|Jyk]] can be found which operates exactly like a Gordo would, and looks similar. Gordo also appears as a sticker in this game and applies a +5 bonus to attack when used by any ''Kirby'' series fighter.

In ''[[Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U|Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS]]'', Gordos appear in [[smashwiki:Smash Run|Smash Run]], acting as they always have, and serving as a hazard to be avoided. They can damage enemies in addition to the playable fighter, however.

He has a spiky body but soft eyes. It's just better to avoid him.
— Patch Plaza

Gordo is a common enemy in the Kirby series, having appeared in every game in the main series as well as many spin-offs. He typically takes the appearance of a floating blue or black ball with large eyes and spikes around his perimeter. He is completely immune to any attack in almost all cases and damages characters who make contact with him. As such, he effectively functions as an obstacle that the player must avoid. He tends to generally block Kirby's path by sitting in corridors, bouncing back and forth between two solid objects vertically or horizontally, circling around blocks, or bouncing along the ground affected by gravity. Additionally, Gordos can be produced by several bosses as attacks, usually by Whispy Woods and his relatives; Gordos produced in this way typically do not last for long, and will bounce off-screen after a short while.

While Gordo typically cannot be destroyed, he can sometimes be dealt with through other means. If one is bouncing around a hallway, destroying a specific block he bounces against will cause him to leave, or in some cases, leaving one or more will keep him trapped in a small unreachable space, allowing Kirby to move around safely. Many of Kirby's attacks leave him temporarily invincible (like those gained with Burning or Wheel), allowing him to dash through Gordos without taking damage, though the Gordos themselves remain unharmed.

Kirby's Dream Land[edit]

Kirby walking past some Gordos in Kirby's Dream Land.

KDL Gordo sprite.png Gordo first appeared in Kirby's Dream Land, where his role as an invincible hazard was established. He is usually seen either holding in place or moving in set patterns. Gordos deal a whopping three bars of damage to Kirby, which is more than any other enemy or hazard in the game, as they all deal only one or two bars. Notably, if Kirby touches the Gordos blocking the doors to the boss rematches in Mt. Dedede, he will be immediately defeated, regardless of how much life he had at the time.

In the Extra Game, Whispy Woods drops Gordos in addition to apples and Lololo & Lalala can push Gordos instead of their usual boxes. Unlike many other enemies, Gordo is not replaced by anything else in this mode.

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

FireBall Kirby rocketing past some Gordos in a spiky room in Kirby's Adventure

KA Gordo sprite.png KNiDL Gordo sprite.png Gordo returns in Kirby's Adventure and also appear in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Here, he gains a somewhat yellow coloration, though his behavior and properties are mostly unchanged. However, he now consistently does only one bar of damage to Kirby, just like everything else. Kirby's Adventure was the first game to establish the notion that certain Gordos could be made to leave the screen by removing Star Blocks on their path, or that Kirby could bypass Gordos using certain Copy Ability attacks, such as Burning.

In Kirby's Adventure and Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Gordo can be found in the following levels and stages:

Kirby's Pinball Land[edit]

In Kirby's Pinball Land, Gordo (known here as Gordow[1]) appears as a common bumper in all three Pinball Lands, though his purpose changes somewhat in each role. Generally, he is worth 240 points when collided with, cannot be removed, and only bumps Kirby mildly. He can bump Kirby more forcefully in certain situations, however.

In the battle with Whispy Woods, Gordows may occasionally be dropped. If they hit the flippers, the flipper hit will be disabled for a moment. Kirby can bump into them to deflect them.

Kirby's Dream Course[edit]

KDCGordo.png In Kirby's Dream Course, Gordo can be seen in various courses holding still in the air. Like his other appearances, Gordo cannot be attacked, and Kirby or Keeby will take damage if they try to attack him. Gordo also appears as one of the five placeholder icons on the scoreboards for each course.

In this game, Gordo has a different design. His spherical body is bulkier, and his spikes poke in and out of visible holes.

One of the four courses in the 2P Game - the Gordo Course - features Gordos prominently.

In Kirby's Dream Course, Gordo can be found in the following courses:

Kirby's Block Ball[edit]

KBBa Gordo sprite.png Gordo appears in Kirby's Block Ball exclusively as a projectile tossed by Whispy Woods. When he collides with Kirby, he will deflect him, and he will shrink any paddles he hits. Kirby can defeat Gordo in this game by striking him with a Power Bounce or a Copy Ability attack, but Gordo is worth no points when defeated and will not drop any items.

Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

KSS Gordo.png KSSU Gordo Sprite.png Gordos appear as common hazards in Kirby Super Star and its remake. In the original version, they share the pale brown coloration common to Gordos in older titles, but in the remake, they adopt the blue hue that has become the standard for Gordo's modern design. In addition to appearing as obstacles in regular stages, they appear when Kirby is fighting Twin Woods, Lololo & Lalala (and their revenge form), Whispy's Revenge and Kabula.

In Kirby Super Star Ultra, Gordo also appears on a card in Kirby Card Swipe.

Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]

Gordos appear in Kirby: Squeak Squad, looking and acting much the way they did in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Since they are invulnerable enemies, they cannot be possessed by Ghost Kirby.

Oddly, there is one particular point in Stage 1 of Gamble Galaxy where Kirby is prompted to jump into a barrel to avoid a wall of passing Gordos. This is the only time in the game (and the series by extension) where Kirby is ever prompted to do such a thing.

Gordos also appear in the Sub-Game Field Frenzy where the player has to avoid tapping them when one appears from a hole. They also appear in Strato Patrol EOS, where they are obstacles that need to be avoided.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

KTD Sectra Gordo.png

Gordos return in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, acting the same as before. A ghost variant, known as a Ghost Gordo, is introduced. It functions similarly to a Gordo but is invisible unless viewed through a mirror. An insectoid variant of the Gordo also exists in Royal Road.

Gordo also appears as an item in the sub-game Kirby Fighters, as the Gordo Ball.

In Kirby Fighters Deluxe, Gordo reprises his role as the Gordo Ball item that he served in Kirby Fighters.

Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe[edit]

In Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe, Gordos appear in some of the courses as stationary hazards to be avoided. Here, they can come in significantly varying sizes.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse[edit]

If you touch a Gordo, he'll definitely do damage. But I don't think he means to hurt anyone. I asked him once, and he just stared at me with those big eyes of his. Maybe he doesn't even know the answer...
— Figurine description of Gordo from Kirby and the Rainbow Curse

Gordo returns in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, serving the same purpose as usual. Notably, unlike most other games, there are lots of Gordos that are affected by gravity, falling when the blocks above them (or balloons they are hanging from) are removed. Like most other enemies in the game, Gordo gets his own figurine.

In Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Gordo appears in the following locations:

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

Gordo returns again in Kirby: Planet Robobot, acting the same as in other titles. Additionally, this title features a novelty object known as the Bolt Catapult in a couple of stages. With the help of the Robobot Armor, Kirby can launch a giant Gordo from the catapult at various objects in the distance.

Gordo also appears as a sticker, using his art from Kirby Super Star.

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe & Super Kirby Clash[edit]

In Team Kirby Clash Deluxe and Super Kirby Clash, Gordo does not appear as a regular enemy. Instead, he appears as a hazard, occasionally dropped by Whispy Woods during his Tougher encounters.

Kirby's Blowout Blast[edit]

Gordos make an appearance in Kirby's Blowout Blast, acting as an indestructible hazard that must be avoided as per usual. Due to not being defeatable, Gordos do not count toward the "Enemies Defeated" bonus.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Gordo in Kirby Star Allies

Gordos reappear in Kirby Star Allies, now in HD. In this game, Gordos can be defeated if an obstacle crushes them.

In addition to appearing in regular stages, Parallel Woods can drop Gordos from his canopy and Parallel Dedede can throw Gordos using his hammer during the battles against them.

Kirby Fighters 2[edit]

King Dedede & Meta Knight batting Gordos around in Kirby Fighters 2

Gordo plays a number of different roles in Kirby Fighters 2. He retains his previous role as an item in the form of the Gordo Ball. In addition, he is used as a stage hazard in the Gourmet Go Go and Dedede Arena stages, as well as being used in the boss fights against Twin Woods and the variants of King Dedede & Meta Knight.

In Story Mode: The Destined Rivals, there is a special item called the Anti-Gordo Charm, which Kirby can use to take less damage from Gordo Balls and other Gordo collisions.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land[edit]

Gordo in Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

Gordo appears as an enemy in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, along with a new variant called Gordo Bar. In addition to his role as a regular enemy, he also plays a role in the attacks of Phantom Tropic Woods and Phantom King Dedede. Gordo also appears as a collectible figure and in the Tilt and Roll Kirby Sub-Game.

In Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Gordo can be found in the following stages (this list does not include Gordo Bar):

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

Gordo in Kirby's Dream Buffet.

Gordo returns as an enemy in Kirby's Dream Buffet, here given the appearance of a jawbreaker to match the food motif. He retains his role as an invincible obstacle, and will stun Kirby for a moment if the two happen to collide. In addition to appearing in race modes, Gordo can also appear as a hazard in the minigame and Battle Royale stages.

Gordo also appears on a Character Treat, using his sprite from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Gordos appear in several locations and settings in the Super Smash Bros. games, starting with Super Smash Bros. Brawl. King Dedede is able to use a special move involving Gordos in each game he appears in as a fighter. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he has a chance to throw a Gordo as part of his Waddle Dee Toss technique, which dealt major damage. In subsequent Smash Bros. games, this move was changed to Gordo Throw, which consistently involves Gordos, but with the added caveat of other fighters being able to knock them back using most attacks. In The Subspace Emissary, an enemy called Jyk can be found which operates exactly like a Gordo would, and looks similar. Gordo also appears as a sticker in this game and applies a +5 bonus to attack when used by any Kirby series fighter.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Gordos appear in Smash Run, acting as they always have, and serving as a hazard to be avoided. They can damage enemies in addition to the playable fighter, however.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Gordo appears as a spirit. Specifically, Gordo is an Advanced-level Shield-type spirit with no additional effects. He cannot be paired with any support spirits but has somewhat higher stats to compensate for this. His spirit battle involves fighting against three invisible King Dededes who continuously use the Gordo Throw move on the Green Greens stage.

Instead, try pushing your enemies onto them! Look for the two different types: the ones that follow a set route and the ones that refuse to move.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Super Smash Bros. Brawl trophy description incorrectly states that Gordos do not move. This is only the case for some Gordos.
  • In the Mario franchise, an enemy known as Unibo has a similar appearance of a Gordo in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, but it is not invincible and can be only defeated by Invincible Mario or by kicking a Koopa shell. However, these related enemies were redesigned to look less like Gordos in Mario & Wario. Unibo SML2 sprite.png
  • The Gordo present on the North American and European box art for Kirby's Dream Land has a mouth, which is the only time they have been presented with one.
