The Game Boy Color is a portable handheld console released by Nintendo in 1998. It is fully backwards-compatible with all Game Boy games. Its main improvement over the original Game Boy is its color screen, capable of displaying up to 56 colors simultaneously. This color display allowed it to add color to older Game Boy titles that were previously monochrome, but were specially designed to accept these additions. Among these were Kirby's Dream Land, Kirby's Pinball Land, and Kirby's Dream Land 2, along with other non-Kirby titles.

Only one Kirby game - Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble - was developed specifically for the Game Boy Color. Kirby Family was a planned title for the system, but it was canceled.
