Friend Abilities are special combination attacks, formations, and augments which Kirby and his allies can perform in Kirby Star Allies. These abilities can be used to create devastating attacks, solve puzzles, or progress through certain obstacles.

List of Abilities

There are several types of Friend Abilities on offer. They fall into one of the three following categories:

Power Effects

Main article: Power Effect

Elemental enhancements can be applied to neutral-type Copy Abilities (typically those that resemble weapons). To do this, the weapon holder must raise their weapon, then the element wielder must use an elemental attack on the former ally to imbue it. There are five power effects in total, as follows:

  • Blizzard - provided by ice-based attacks
  • Bluster - provided by wind-based attacks
  • Sizzle - provided by fire-based attacks
  • Splash - provided by water-based attacks
  • Zap - provided by electric-based attacks

In addition, weapons which have already been enchanted can be used in turn to enchant other weapons. Certain special attacks (like Gooey's tongue attacks) can also be used to add elemental effects.

Friend Combo Attacks

In addition to the above, there are special one-time moves which the Star Allies can perform by combining specific abilities together, or by simply having the allies involved. These abilities are as follows:

Combo Friend Abilities in Kirby Star Allies
Ability Components Description Notes
Adeleine & Ribbon Uses a painting canvas to produce food and Point Stars. This ability does not actually require partners to be used.
Based on the Bonus Game from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.
Parasol or Parasol Waddle Dee Expands the Parasol to cover a wide area above the user, which others can take shelter under. This ability does not actually require partners to be used.
Cook or Chef Kawasaki
+
Any ally
While using the Cook Pot move, allies can hop into the pot to produce an additional piece of food per ally when finished.
Crash
+
Any ally
While using Crash, any allies present will become involved, being thrown around after the explosion to deal additional damage as projectiles.
Stone, Rocky, Rick, or Gooey
+
Any ally move involving Blizzard, Bluster, or Splash
Applying Blizzard, Bluster, or Splash attacks to the appropriate ally will cause them to turn into a curling stone and fly forward, dealing large damage to anything it hits and pounding in sideways stakes. The element used will add various properties to the curling stone. These moves are the only ones which do not follow standard Power Effect naming conventions for "Blizzard" (Ice) and "Bluster" (Clean).
Mike
+
Any ally
While using the final shout of Mike, any allies present will become involved, increasing the damage the move does per ally.
Festival
+
Any ally
While using the Festival ability, any allies present will become involved, increasing the damage the move does per ally.
Spider, Como, or Taranza Creates a heart-shaped trampoline of web that can be used to leap high and deal damage to foes above, and pass through hazards unharmed. This ability does not actually require partners to be used.
Cleaning or Broom Hatter
+
Any ally
Allies get sucked into a vacuum cleaner, then get launched as projectiles to deal damage to foes and bust stone and metal blocks.
Beetle, Beetley, Bugzzy, Fighter, Gooey, Knuckle Joe, or Suplex
+
Any ally
Allies are grabbed, then get thrown as projectiles to deal damage to foes and bust stone and metal blocks.
ESP or NESP
+
Stone, Rocky, Rick, or Gooey
An ally in Stone form can be picked up using psychokinesis, then levitated at will before being dropped on enemies or obstacles.
This can be used to break stone and metal blocks or pound Electric Stakes.
Water or Driblee
+
Any Blizzard-based attack
Channeling any Blizzard-based attack through a Water-powered ally creates a stream of icicle projectiles that can quickly defeat enemies or clear away burning hazards.
Magolor
+
Any ally
Magolor summons a small version of the Lor Starcutter which allies jump into, then the ship gets thrown forward to defeat enemies and clear away heavy blocks.
The damage done and size of the ship increases per ally.
Fire or Burning Leo
+
Any Bluster-based attack
Channeling any Bluster-based attack through a Fire-powered ally creates a stream of fireballs that rise upward as they fly, damaging enemies they come into contact with.
Artist, Adeleine & Ribbon or Vividria
+
Stone, Rocky, Rick, or Gooey
Using the paintbrush on an ally in Stone Form transforms that ally into a giant painted stone form that deals more damage.
Artist or Vividria Uses a painting canvas to produce food. This ability does not actually require partners to be used.
Based on Ice-Spark from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.
Cook or Chef Kawasaki
+
Any ally
While using the Souper Supper move, allies can hop into the pot to produce an additional piece of food per ally when finished, and will be launched out of the pot to deal damage to foes as a projectile.
Plasma or Plugg
+
Any Splash-based attack
Channeling any Splash-based attack through a Plasma-powered ally creates a stream of electrified globs of water that damage enemies they come into contact with and channel electricity.
Water or Driblee
+
Any Zap-based attack
Channeling any Zap-based attack through a Water-powered ally creates a stream of thunderbolts that damage enemies they come into contact with and leave water splashes on impact.

Friend Actions

Finally, there are five special formations which can only be used by finding a Friend Platform at various points in stages. These require four allies of any type to activate, and are as follows:

Friend Actions in Kirby Star Allies
Ability Description Notes
Form a bridge to span chasms and guide Key Dees to the other side. This ability is the only one that is not used to attack enemies.
Form a circle to roll down slopes and crash through obstacles.
Ride a special form of Warp Star that allows its riders to shoot powerful elemental projectiles.
Form a train to ride quickly through obstacles and up walls and ceilings.
More powerful variant of the Friend Star that is used to battle Void Termina.

Trivia

  • While not technically a Friend Ability, there is a special ability for Sleep called 'Friend Wake-Up Call', wherein a friend pops Kirby's nose balloon while he's sleeping to wake him up early.
