Hit the flag with the ball by any means necessary!
— Collection Lists description of Flagball.

KBR Flagball icon.png Flagball is one of the ten Battle types in Kirby Battle Royale. Contestants play in teams to toss the ball onto their team's flag to score points. The first team to reach 7 points wins.

Rules and gameplay

This game takes place in a flat 2-D arena on the beach in a static area, with wooden platforms over the sandy floor. In addition to the contestants - who always play in teams of two - there is a ball and one or two flags. One flag belongs to each team, and the objective of said team is to bring their flag and the ball together by any means necessary. To do this, the ball needs to be tossed at or slammed onto the flag (or vice-versa). Holding both at once does not count, nor does merely holding one item near the other.

When the game begins, the ball is placed down at even distance between the teams, with the flags being in various positions depending on the stage being played. After a point is scored, the ball will be placed down near the team who didn't score the point upon reset. When picking up a ball or a flag, the contestant holding the object can toss it in several directions. It is possible to hit opponents using the ball or a flag to knock them down momentarily or possibly KO them. When the ball is tossed near a flag, the game will slow down and the camera will zoom in for dramatic effect, which can trip up contestants away from the focus of attention. After being tossed, the ball will have a trail which will either be red or blue depending on which team tossed it. When the ball has a trail, it cannot be grabbed by the team opposing, and will collide with them if they meet.

When one team gets three points, flags become double flags, worth two points each. They may also end up combining into a single flag, depending on the stage. In the latter case, the dual flag can be held as one object, and the team has to score by matching the ball with their side of the flag. Contestants should be careful, as it is possible to accidentally score for the opposing team.

Stages

There are four stages for Flagball. They are as follows:

Stages in Flagball
Name Intro Gameplay Description
Beginner's Beach KBR Flagball Stage 1.png KBR Flagball Stage 1 Gameplay.png Several platforms adorn the arena, with the flags occupying small ledges in the upper left and right. As the game comes to a close, the uppermost platforms disappear, and the double flags occupy lower platforms on the left and right.

The flags cannot be carried until after they fall to the lower areas.

Flagger Beach KBR Flagball Stage 2.png KBR Flagball Stage 2 Gameplay.png While similar to Beginner's Beach, the platforms are a bit wider, and the flags start on the lower ones.

As the round nears the end, the flags combine into one, and are given to one team, while the other takes the ball.

Footfall Beach KBR Flagball Stage 3.png KBR Flagball Stage 3 Gameplay.png This stage starts the contestants on the top deck of platforms. The lower decks constantly shift between being up and down, and are unusable when down. The flags are placed close to the teams, while the ball is placed on the sand.

Near the end, the flags combine into one, and are given to one team, while the ball is placed on the other side on the floor.

This stage is never used in the Cake Royale.

Lopsided Beach KBR Flagball Stage 4.png KBR Flagball Stage 4 Gameplay.png This stage has an uneven arrangement of platforms, which makes the blue team's flag more difficult to reach. It is only available in Dedede's Cake Royale, probably for that reason.

Near the end, the flags combine into one, and are given to one team, while the other takes the ball.

Battle Bonuses

The following Battle Bonuses can be awarded in Single Player or local Multiplayer Battle Mode:

  • Ball-Keeping Pro: Held the ball for the longest time!
  • Flag Defender: Carried the rival's flag on defense for the longest amount of time!
  • Slam-Dunk Hero: Scored the most dunk shots!
  • Speedy Scorer: Scored a point in the shortest amount of time!

Trivia

  • Flagball is the only one of the 10 battle modes that takes place in a traditional 2-D format.
  • Unlike in Crazy Theater, contestants' health is not restored after a point is scored.
  • Flagball is the only one of the 10 battle modes where a game cannot end in a tie or have more than one winner, due to how scoring works in this mode.
