Don't Bank on It is the 50th (48th in the 4Kids broadcast) episode of the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! series. In this episode, King Dedede schemes to make the people of Dream Land love him and give him their money by using Dedede Dolls to hypnotize them in their sleep. This plan nearly works, but is foiled by Dedede himself due to being forced to cut his sleep schedule short to pull off this trick. In his sleep-deprived exhaustion, Dedede loses his temper and decides to punish the Dream Landers by attacking them remotely through the dolls, but this also backfires when it is revealed that anything that happens to the dolls also happens to him. When Kirby and the others retaliate against their dolls, King Dedede is subjected to numerous sources of pain and torment, ending with him being indirectly inhaled and swallowed by Kirby and being stranded in his stomach dimension.

Plot synopsis[edit]

King Dedede has his soldiers distribute the Dedede Dolls to everyone in town.

The episode begins at Castle Dedede, where King Dedede is ordering a special offer from Night Mare Enterprises for free...minus a special set of service charges. Through the Monster Delivery System comes a large pile of Dedede Dolls which the King proclaims are about to make him a lot of money. Using his Waddle Dees, King Dedede then sends a doll to everybody in Dream Land. Tiff and her family appraise the dolls and are about to dispose of them when a special Channel DDD broadcast airs. In this broadcast, King Dedede and Escargoon announce that the dolls everybody just received are lucky, and will bring good fortune to all who keep them. Later on, Captain Waddle Doo personally delivers a box to Kirby, but Tokkori decides to keep the doll for himself, having been fooled by the advert like the rest of the kingdom.

That night, Tiff decides to give the doll a try by placing it on her bed and sleeping next to it, as the rest of town follows suit with their dolls. As the clock strikes 2 A.M., King Dedede awakes and heads out to his balcony, where he lets out a chant intent on hypnotizing the people of Dream Land into liking him through the dolls. This chant causes those sleeping near the dolls to experience discomfort. The next day, the hypnosis appears to have had its effect, as Tokkori and others decide they like King Dedede all of a sudden. However, this effect quickly wears off as soon as they all relay this to each-other, and realize how ludicrous it sounds when they hear it from someone else. Not connecting this to the doll at first, King Dedede is given another opportunity the next night to influence them. This time, he instructs them in their sleep to grab any spare change they have on hand and deposit it in their dolls, which they do. The next day, they check their dolls and notice coins jingling inside, thinking it to be a gift from the doll.

King Dedede learns too late just how synchronized he is with his dolls.

On the third night, King Dedede rises to give yet another hypnotic command. This time, he commands his subjects to put all of their money inside the dolls. The next day, King Dedede then reveals a new bank he has set up, and the people of Dream Land rush to deposit the money they placed in the doll the night before into the bank. As King Dedede and Escargoon celebrate their success, Tiff is confronted by Meta Knight, who berates her for following suit. As King Dedede and Escargoon seal away the money, Dedede reveals his exhaustion, as his night-time hypnosis sessions left him sleep-deprived. Escargoon insists that they still need to get a hold of Kirby's doll, but Dedede decides he will do it later. That night, Kirby decides to take his doll back from Tokkori while the bird is sleeping and cuddle with it in the nest. Meanwhile, remembering Meta Knight's words, Tiff decides to place her doll in a drawer to see if it will still affect her in her sleep. Lastly, King Dedede decides to pull a fast one on Escargoon by forcing him to sleep with a doll as well.

King Dedede is stranded in the parallel universe within Kirby's stomach.

King Dedede - tired of not being able to sleep well - decides to get revenge on his subjects by using the dolls to torment them on the fourth night. Meanwhile, Tiff sleeps soundly due to her decision. The next day, Escargoon complains to the King about his treatment, but Dedede brushes him off. In frustration, Escargoon smacks the doll, which causes Dedede to cry out in pain. Meanwhile, at Kirby's House, Tokkori instructs Kirby to kick the doll out of their house, and he does so, which causes King Dedede to get knocked over. Escargoon compounds this punishment by tossing the doll around, which in turn causes Dedede to fly through the air. King Dedede then rushes back to the throne room to ask N.M.E. for an explanation, and the Sales Guy confirms that King Dedede is linked to them, and that any abuse the dolls receive will also be experienced by him. Hearing this, King Dedede rushes out to collect all the dolls in order to preserve his own safety. In the confiscation process, however, King Dedede receives more inadvertent abuse, and is eventually kicked into a river. Kirby follows the doll in the river as Tiff and Meta Knight observe from a distance.

As King Dedede is tormented, Chef Kawasaki helps Kirby fish the doll out of the river, and then Kirby swings it around, causing further pain for Dedede. Tiff and Meta Knight catch up with Dedede and explain to him that the Cappies are withdrawing all their money from his bank, causing him to panic. He rushes to the bank, but arrives too late, finding an empty vault. In desperation, King Dedede decides that if he cannot buy any more monsters, he can at least get his revenge on Kirby by attacking him with the last remaining doll. As Kirby is attacked, Chef Kawasaki decides to help him by digging a hole and burying the doll inside, which in turn causes Dedede to be buried into the ground, while Tiff and Escargoon watch with exasperation and apathy. After the doll is bitten by a mole, King Dedede jumps out of the ground and tries to hammer Kirby for "sneak-attacking" him. Tokkori then tells Kirby to inhale the doll, and he does so, though he does not gain a "Doll" Copy Ability in the process. The episode ends with King Dedede left stranded in Kirby's parallel stomach dimension as his doll can be seen encased in a light bubble.

Differences between versions[edit]

  • In the Japanese version, a minor-key version of the Invincible Candy jingle plays during the scene where all the Cappies deposit their money into the DDD Bank.

Dialogue differences[edit]

  • In the Japanese version, there is no implication that the Dedede Dolls were free aside from the express charges. Instead, Customer Service explains that it is a custom order that had to be worked on overnight to finish, and that it was extra-pricey due to this effort.
  • In the Japanese version, King Dedede and Doctor Escargon play up religious overtones when promoting the Dedede Dolls on Channel DDD.
  • In the Japanese version, when King Dedede is being buried by Kirby and Chef Kawasaki, Escargon comments by saying it is too early for him to be in the grave.

Trivia[edit]

  • At numerous points in the episode, there are scenes where something nearly happens to the Dedede Dolls, such as Tuff nearly tossing one into the garbage, and Chief Bookem nearly knocking one off a table. These incidents are meant to be foreshadowing of what will eventually happen to King Dedede when one of his dolls is not so lucky.
  • The ending scene of the Dedede Doll encased in a light bubble out in space is a reference to the ending of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
  • The episode ends with King Dedede being trapped in another dimension as a result of Kirby inhaling the last Dedede doll, yet he is back by the next episode. As a result, it's unknown how Dedede was able to escape said dimension in the first place.
