Dekabu, originally known as Big Kaboo[1], is an extra large Kabu and an uncommon enemy in the Kirby series. They debuted in Kirby's Pinball Land as an obstacle, Kirby's Block Ball as a boss, and Kirby's Dream Land 3 as an enemy.

Game appearances

Kirby's Pinball Land

In Kirby's Pinball Land, Big Kaboo appears in the lowermost board of Wispy-Woods Land. In this appearance, it is only slightly bigger than one of the game's Kaboos. It is surrounded by a set of three Kaboos each on the upper corners. The Big Kaboo is worth 480 points each time it is bumped. When all six Kaboos have been bumped, the Big Kaboo disappears, leaving a Warp Star behind.

Kirby's Block Ball

An unnamed Dekabu appears as the boss of Stage 3 in Kirby's Block Ball. This boss has 12 hit points and attacks by conjuring smaller Kabus around himself, then sending them out. The Kabus can reduce the size of paddles that they hit.

Dekabu is worth 50000 points when Kirby defeats him.

Kirby's Dream Land 3

In Kirby's Dream Land 3, Dekabus appear under their current name. They are first encountered in the fourth stage of Grass Land and appear sporadically throughout the game. They always start out at the bottom of a covered hole in the ground (their lair), where they wait until Kirby gets in front of them, completely immobile until he does. When Kirby makes his way into their field of vision, however, Dekabus suddenly become active, barking at him three times before leaping straight upwards and landing on the platform covering their hiding place. Once it is seated on top, the Dekabu proceeds to spit out three Kabus of the same color, which advance forward with continuous hops and can be inhaled or destroyed using almost any attack. Once all three Kabus have been released, the Dekabu falls back into the hole it started out in, but will continue to repeat its attack pattern from the beginning at regular intervals as long as Kirby remains within its range. The Dekabu itself cannot be inhaled but can be defeated in a single hit with any other attack.

In this appearance, Dekabus possess a noticeably more humanlike face. This makes them slightly reminiscent of the head of a moai statue.

Kirby Mass Attack

Dekabu appears in the Sub-Game Strato Patrol EOS. When defeated, they split into four smaller Kabus.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe & Kirby: Planet Robobot

Dekabus first appeared in 3D in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Their appearance is updated in that their head resembles the crenelations of a medieval castle tower, making them look somewhat like a sandcastle. Dekabus spit out Kabu from their mouth given the chance, and have a great deal of HP. They also appear in Kirby: Planet Robobot, serving the same purpose.

Unlike their previous appearances, Dekabus can be inhaled.

Kirby Star Allies

Dekabus make their latest appearance in Kirby Star Allies. Kirby can also encounter them in the credits segment of the game. Like their appearances in Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Kirby: Planet Robobot, a Dekabu can be inhaled.

Trivia

  • Besides Doka, Dekabu is the only enemy in Kirby's Dream Land 3 that is shown in the False Ending but does not have any official artwork.
