Dedede's Pet Threat is the 56th episode of the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! series. In this episode, King Dedede orders four pet Scarfies from Night Mare Enterprises and proceeds to spoil them rotten by feeding them as much food as he can get his hands on. After being informed of the bill he racked up for doing this, King Dedede immediately dumps his Scarfies in the wilderness, where they proceed to terrorize the countryside and multiply rapidly. After chasing Kirby around, the pink puffball leads them back to Castle Dedede, where King Dedede is obliged to feed them the special food they came with, but this food ends up turning them into monsters. From there, after failing to inhale the Scarfies, Kirby eats King Dedede's hammer instead to gain the Hammer Copy Ability, and then uses it to pacify the Scarfies. This done, King Dedede is left to try and give the Scarfies back to N.M.E., but he is informed that since they multiplied so much, he will have to pay a service charge to send back the extras.

This episode marks the first appearance of the Hammer Copy Ability in the anime series.

Plot synopsis

King Dedede receives his new Scarfy pets from N.M.E.

The episode begins in Castle Dedede, where King Dedede is ordering something new from Night Mare Enterprises. Through the transmitter comes several boxes of pet food, and then a kennel with four Scarfies in it. The N.M.E. Sales Guy debriefs King Dedede about his new pets, explaining that they will only be loyal to their owner, and Dedede soon becomes enamored with them. Despite the Sales Guy's warning about their particular nutritional needs, King Dedede decides to feed his new Scarfies a massive cake instead of the food they came with. Later on, King Dedede takes his Scarfies out for a walk through Cappy Town flanked by a retinue of Waddle Dee guards and shows them off to the townsfolk. After a few comments, one of the Scarfies accidentally gets hit by Mayor Len's car as he drives by, and Dedede orders his guards to toss him into the castle dungeon as punishment. The others watching try to tend to the hurt Scarfy, but Dedede dismisses them, and takes his Scarfies to Kawasaki's instead.

Despite Chef Kawasaki's initial apprehension to having pets inside his restaurant, he prepares them food on Dedede's behalf, which they scarf down happily. However, as they eat, they begin to twitch in a strange fashion, though this is not noticed by the others. Seeing them eat, Kirby tries to join in, but one of the Scarfies bites his hand hard, and King Dedede tosses Kirby away after scolding his Scarfy for trying to eat something so unappealing. As Tiff worries about Kirby's wound, the Scarfy that bit him relishes its taste by licking its lips. Later that night, at the castle, Tiff and her family are about to have dinner, but the Scarfies barge in and eat all of their food. Outraged, Tiff and Tuff chase them down the halls of the castle, only to see them eating once again with King Dedede. Tiff and Tuff comment on their appetites, as well as how Dedede is spoiling them. Later on, as the Scarfies sleep, King Dedede obsessively watches video tapes of himself playing with them earlier in the day, but then soon starts to tire of them. Escargoon then barges in and explains to Dedede that the cost of feeding the Scarfies is unsustainable to the castle's treasury. Seeing this, King Dedede immediately turns on his new pets and plans to abandon them in the wilderness.

Kirby brings the multiplied Scarfies back to the castle after Dedede attempted to abandon them.

King Dedede and Escargoon drive the Royal Racecar deep into Whispy Woods Forest with the Scarfies and release them there without a second thought. Rick soon discovers them and offers them an apple, but the Scarfies do not accept this food, and soon start to chase the hamster through the woods. Rick manages to escape them, but the Scarfies soon start to wander the countryside. They stumble onto Mayor Len's sheep and proceed to devour them, leaving only bones for the shepherd to find. From here, the Scarfys begin to multiply, and find their way to Kirby's house. As they pass by, the Scarfy that bit Kirby earlier notices the pink puffball sleeping in the tree, and decides to try and eat him. The other Scarfies follow suit, and proceed to sneak up on him. After getting his hand bit again, Kirby wakes up and runs screaming in pain into the house as the Scarfies corner him and Tokkori. Tokkori is then eaten whole by one of the Scarfies, but is later spat out having apparently not tasted good to it. Kirby runs out of the house after getting the Scarfy off his hand and the monsters pursue him.

The Scarfies are pacified after being beaten back by Hammer Kirby.

As Kirby runs, the Scarfies continue to multiply and the town becomes aware of the situation. As Kirby tries to escape them, they invade various places in town and cause havoc. As Kirby runs toward Castle Dedede, Tokkori tells King Dedede about the situation, claiming there to now be twenty Scarfies. King Dedede laughs this off, but Tiff and Tuff come in to berate the King for his irresponsibility. After being accused of not wanting to keep feeding them, King Dedede remembers the boxes of food sent to him earlier and insists he will feed them that if given the opportunity. That opportunity arrives when Kirby comes running into the courtyard with several more than twenty Scarfies on his tail, prompting everyone to run. After making it into the throne room, King Dedede and Escargoon desperately try to feed the Scarfies the food in the boxes, which consists of bags of small bones. Once the Scarfies eat these, they proceed to transform into their "angry" form and then attack everyone.

After the Scarfies multiply further and menace the castle residents, Kirby attempts to inhale them, but is unable to do so. Meanwhile, as King Dedede tries to defend himself from the Scarfies, he whacks on, causing it to cough up its bone and return to normal. Seeing this, Tiff tells Kirby to inhale Dedede's hammer and he does so, gaining the Hammer Copy Ability. Using this ability, Kirby performs a spinning hammer swing attack that knocks away all of the Scarfies and returns them to their normal state. Later on, King Dedede tries to sell his Scarfies back to N.M.E., but they inform him that since the Scarfies have multiplied, Dedede has to pay a thousand Dede-dollars to send back each Scarfy that was not part of the original package. Given that there are now three hundred of them, King Dedede is left to bemoan his fiscal fate, and the episode ends as Tiff, Tuff, and Kirby watch Dedede and Escargoon get piled on by their pets, and then Kirby gets his hand bitten one more time for good measure.

Differences between versions

Japanese-exclusive scene where the Scarfies invade Samo's bar.

In the Japanese version, a minor-key version of the Invincible Candy jingle plays when the Scarfies are eating at Kawasaki's.
In the Japanese version, there is an extra scene where Kirby runs through Samo's bar to try and escape the Scarfies.

Dialogue differences

In the Japanese version, much is said about how the Scarfies resemble Kirby at first, and the Scarfies themselves sound a lot more like Kirby initially as well.
In the Japanese version, King Dedede sentences Mayor Len to twenty thousand years of hard labTemplate:Or for accidentally hitting one of the Scarfies, though this sentence does not appear to have been followed up on.
In the Japanese version, Kirby shouts the names of his Hammer attacks as he uses them.

Trivia

The cake that King Dedede feeds to his Scarfies at the start of the episode greatly resembles the cake for Kirby that Danger emerged from in Kirby Takes the Cake.
Despite Dedede's orders, Mayor Len does not appear to have been actually taken to the castle dungeon, as he appears later that night after the shepherd shows him what happened to his sheep.
This is the first episode where Whispy Woods Forest is a setting, but Whispy Woods himself does not make an appearance.
