Creating this dark swordsman pushed Star Dream to the limits of its abilities. The cloning process was a success, but only a partial data analysis was possible, and its true form has not yet emerged.
— Vs. Dark Matter Clone pause screen description from Kirby: Planet Robobot

Dark Matter Clone is a boss encountered near the end of Meta Knightmare Returns in Kirby: Planet Robobot. It is a clone made by Star Dream based on Dark Matter Blade, and as such, it fights much like Dark Matter does in Kirby's Dream Land 2. Its appearance is nearly identical to the real article, but its eye has an orange bull's-eye pattern rather than a proper iris and sclera.

As a new admin, you must supply your credentials... to the strongest warriors of this planet. Executing Sword_Master.EXE.
— Star Dream - addressing Meta Knight in Meta Knightmare Returns

After defeating President Haltmann 2.0, Meta Knight, presuming his work finished, makes a triumphant pose. Then, the supercomputer Star Dream activates behind him. The computer proclaims Meta Knight to be the new admin, and as such, vets him through a special credential process dubbed "Sword_Master.EXE", where he must prove his worth as a swordfighter. The first challenge Star Dream sends is a clone of Dark Matter Blade.

Dark Matter Clone is also fought in The True Arena, just before Sectonia Clone.

Boss fight

Performing "Dark Beam"
Performing "Flying Sword"

The following lists all of Dark Matter Clone's attacks in Kirby: Planet Robobot. Attack names are taken from official Japanese strategy guides unless otherwise specified.

Attacks - Phase 1
Attack Description
ダークビーム
Dark Beam
Dark Matter Clone fires a series of blasts from its sword straight forward. It may also charge up and perform a more rapid-fire version. The sword blasts can be crouched under.
フライングソード
Flying Sword
Dark Matter Clone's sword glows with a rainbow aura, and it dives toward Meta Knight or Kirby, leaving stars as it passes.
ダークバウンドマター
Dark Bound Matter
Dark Matter Clone fires either three or five dark orbs that bounce around the screen. These can be hit to knock them back at the clone.
ダークビームラッシュ
Dark Beam Rush
Dark Matter Clone charges up and then fires four sword blasts rapid-fire at Meta Knight or Kirby's current position.

For phase 1, the Dark Matter Clone attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:

  1. Dark Beam
  2. Flying Sword
  3. Dark Bound Matter [3 orbs]
  4. Dark Beam Rush
  5. Flying Sword
  6. Dark Beam
  7. Dark Bound Matter [5 orbs]
  8. Dark Beam Rush

When Dark Matter Clone is reduced to half health, it pauses for a brief moment, regains composure, and the eye within its visor drops down onto the torso, resembling Dark Matter's characteristic eye.

Performing "Spreading Matter Beam"
Attacks - Phase 2
Attack Description
ダークサンダー
Dark Thunder
Dark Matter Clone fires multiple dark beams from its eye that make a spiral across the stage, leaving four stars on the ground.
ぶんれつボディショット
Dividing Body Shot
Dark Matter Clone creates four orbiting spheres of energy around itself, then fires them, leaving a brief danger zone on the ground where they hit. They can be preemptively knocked away, and provide Meta Knight with energy if done so.
フライングソード
Flying Sword
Dark Matter Clone's sword glows with a rainbow aura, then the clone starts thrashing it about as it dives several times across the stage.
かくさんマタービーム
Spreading Matter Beam
Dark Matter Clone, after a brief charge-up period, fires two dark lightning bolts from its eye. Each one leaves a star on impact. It will always fire two sets of these, and may change positioning to fire two more sets of lightning bolts. The blind spot is directly underneath the clone.

For phase 2, the clone starts with these attacks:

  • Dark Thunder
  • Dividing Body Shot
  • Flying Sword
  • Spreading Matter Beam
  • Dividing Body Shot
  • Spreading Matter Beam x2

Afterwards, the Dark Matter Clone attacks in this order on loop:

  1. Flying Sword
  2. Dark Thunder
  3. Dividing Body Shot
  4. Spreading Matter Beam
  5. Dark Beam Wave
  6. Dividing Body Shot
  7. Flying Sword
  8. Spreading Matter Beam x2
  9. Dividing Body Shot
  10. Dark Thunder
  11. Spreading Matter Beam

Once Dark Matter Clone is defeated, it dissolves back into the purple goo from whence it was formed, collapsing tumultuously in on itself before exploding.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Dark Matter Clone's likeness appears as a Dress-Up Mask in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe. It is unlocked by completing card #38 in the Stamp Rally, and it replaces the wearer's voice with sound effects from Kirby's Dream Land 2.

Music

Main article: Reproduction of Darkness

Dark Matter Clone's theme is titled 暗黒の復刻 (Reproduction of Darkness). It's an arrangement utilizing both "Real Dark Matter" and "Dark Matter Blade", the themes of both of Dark Matter's forms in Kirby's Dream Land 2.

Trivia

  • The rainbow aura that sometimes appears around Dark Matter Clone's sword is a reference to the Rainbow Sword that Kirby used to defeat Dark Matter in Kirby's Dream Land 2.
    • During the "Kirby: Planet Robobot Drawing and Screenshot Challenge" on Miiverse, it was explained that this rainbow aura was the result of Dark Matter's lingering memories of the Rainbow Sword when fighting Kirby, which got transferred into the clone.[1]
  • When defeated, the clone dissolves into the purple goo it once formed from. Just before it explodes, it briefly takes the shape of Real Dark Matter, its true form.
  • The text that appears before fighting Dark Matter Clone in The True Arena in the American English version calls it Dark Matter Blade rather than "Dark Matter Clone". Given that its Japanese name is クローン剣士ダークマター (Clone Swordsman Dark Matter), it can be assumed that the full name is Dark Matter Blade Clone and it was simply abbreviated due to character limits. In the British English version, it is referred to as "Dark Matter Clone" instead of "Dark Matter Blade" in both The True Arena rest area and during the battle itself.
  • The Dark Matter Clone holds its sword slightly to the left while idle.

This light is materialized from Dark Matter’s memories of the Rainbow Sword that he faced in the Kirby’s Dream Land 2 game. Those memories must have been included in the original data used to create the clone." –Shinya Kumazaki (Miiverse)
