This article is about the Crystal Shard item. For the game, see Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. For the area in The Great Cave Offensive, see Crystal (area).
The group convenes over the final shard found in the Neo Star realm in The Crystal Shards.

A Crystal Shard is one of the 74 scattered, hallowed pieces of a powerful Crystal, originally located on Ripple Star in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, that fragmented some time after Ribbon's attempt to safeguard the Crystal from Dark Matter at the beginning of the game. These indigo shards carry an unknown power, originally used to harmonize the forces surrounding Ripple Star; in their current, isolated forms, evil is more than able to penetrate not only Ripple Star, but the entire realm in search of these sacred crystal fragments. As the game's name implies, the plot of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards is to collect and reclaim the broken pieces of the Crystal in order to restore peace to Ripple Star and by extension, the entire planetary system.

Collecting the Shards

In each regular stage, of which there are three or four per planet, three Crystal Shards are hidden. These fragments are often strategically placed so that Kirby must overexert himself physically (i.e. by floating and extended breath-holding) or in terms of busting down walls, blocks, etc. with different copy ability combinations in order to reach these treasures. While the final boss of a certain planet reveals one Crystal Shard upon defeat, many of the mini-bosses in The Crystal Shards yield a crystal piece in the same manner. In the case that Kirby has already obtained a certain Crystal Shard within a level, a large Blue Star will take its place, rewarding Kirby with the equivalent of 10 Stars, placing him well on his way to achieving a 1-Up, if it is collected.

The number of Crystal Shards Kirby possesses by the time he reaches the boss of the Ripple Star, Miracle Matter, determines whether or not he will be able to face the final boss, , and rid the entire realm of Dark Matter. To face 0², all 74 shards (including the one Ribbon managed to keep and the one Kirby found after she landed on his head) must be found across the realm, and rightly so, as the shards themselves are the sole weapon used to send 0² and Dark Matter back to the depths of space.

Guide

The following is a full guide on how to reach each Crystal Shard. Crystal Shards earned from stage bosses are required. The first two of the 74 shards were found at the start and are therefore not listed.

Pop Star

Stage 1

  • The first crystal shard in the game is lying out in the open, in the very first area. Kirby will have no trouble getting it.
  • Past the Poppy Bros. Jr., there is a shallow stream with a large black rock in the middle. Kirby can blast this away with some variant of the Bomb ability to get the second shard underneath.
  • Kirby will earn the third shard after defeating Waddle Doo. This is required to beat the level.

Stage 2

  • The first shard can be found during the Waddle Dee wooden lift section. Kirby will have to jump off the lift prematurely to find a line of Point Stars leading downward. The shard is below them.
  • The second shard appears after the Mid-Boss Big Bouncy is defeated.
  • The third shard is earned once Adeleine is defeated. It is required to beat the level.

Stage 3

  • The first shard is found at the bottom of the second hole in the wall that Kirby jumps into from outside. It is under a green barrier, which can only be destroyed using some variant of the Cutter ability.
  • The second shard is found in the wide castle chamber with the spiral staircase. It is right behind and above the door which Kirby entered from.
  • The last shard is earned by defeating King Dedede, and required to beat the level.

Boss: Whispy Woods

  • To earn this shard, Kirby must battle and defeat Whispy Woods. This is required.

Rock Star

Stage 1

  • The first shard can be found inside the first set of ruins. It is floating up near the top of the room, in the middle.
  • The second shard can be obtained after defeating the Mid-Boss Kacti.
  • The third shard is hidden behind a barrier out in the desert on the other side of the ruins. This barrier has brown and yellow stripes, and can only be broken using the Stone-Spark Power Combo.

Stage 2

  • The first shard can be found at the base of some ruins in the second area. Kirby will have to cause part of the floor to crumble to reach it.
  • The second shard can be found within the first interior room of the ruins, underneath some platforms. It hangs over a bottomless pit.
  • The third shard can be found in the labyrinth, where King Dedede gets to play. It is located behind a breakable wall in the upper-left.

Stage 3

  • The first shard can be found in the first area, inside a large fossil skeleton. To get in there, Kirby will need some variant of the Stone ability.
  • The second shard can be found in a sand pit after defeating the Mid-Boss Fishbone. To get there, Kirby will have to take the second sand pit immediately on the left after entering the first one.
  • The third shard can be found at the top of an underwater chute, past the shooting Fishbones and falling fossil spines. It is in the upper-left corner.

Stage 4

  • The first shard can be found in a room with shifting platform belts. Kirby will have to be careful not to be crushed by them as he moves toward the shard's location.
  • The second shard can be found in a room with a bunch of switches. In the prior room, Adeleine can be seen overlooking some dark portraits, which Kirby can illuminate using Bomb-Spark. This will give him the hint he needs to press the right sequence of switches by Ducking on them. Doing so will cause the shard to appear.
  • The third shard can be collected after defeating the Mid-Boss Spark-i.

Boss: Pix

  • To earn this shard, Kirby must battle and defeat Pix. This is required.

Aqua Star

Stage 1

  • The first shard can be found in a tall cave area with the Zebon. It is underneath a trio of Scarfies that Kirby will blast through on the way up.
  • The second shard is obtainable after defeating the Mid-Boss Tick.
  • The third shard can be found at the area with the bridges in front of a huge waterfall. The Ice-Bomb ability is needed to break a small platform at the bottom, where a Zebon is waiting to shoot Kirby up to the shard.

Stage 2

  • The first shard can be found in the room where the Mid-Boss Kany is fought. To access it, Kirby needs the Burn-Stone ability.
  • The second shard can be collected during the boat ride with Waddle Dee. They will have to jump the boat off a waterfall to get it.
  • The third shard can be found along the river, shortly after the Invincible Candy. It will be hugging a waterfall.

Stage 3

  • The first shard can be found within the large rocky grotto, behind a clump of green/black stone. Kirby will need the Bomb-Cutter ability to bust it open.
  • The second shard can be collected after defeating the Mid-Boss Kapar.
  • The third shard can be found in the grotto directly following the Kapar fight. Kirby will need the Stone-Cutter ability, specifically the Rick form to reach it.

Stage 4

  • The first shard can be found at the top of an underwater chamber filled with currents, Turbites and Blowfish. Kirby will have to fight the current somewhat to reach it.
  • The second shard can be found in the following tunnel. Kirby can grab onto a pole along the way to more easily reach it.
  • The third shard can be found in the channel with boulders being carried along it. It is located along the floor.

Boss: Acro

  • To earn this shard, which is required to beat the level, Kirby must battle and defeat Acro.

Neo Star

Stage 1

  • The first shard is hidden underneath a grass trap in the first area. Kirby should be careful though, as the others have Spike pits.
  • The second shard is located at the bottom of the cliff in the next area.
  • The third crystal can be found hiding in the canopy, above a circular log platform.

Stage 2

  • The first shard can be found at the very beginning, if Kirby falls to the left.
  • The second shard can be collected along the mine cart track, if Kirby and Waddle Dee jump to the top track.
  • The third shard can be found in a lower area of the cave past the streambeds. Kirby will need to use the dangerous Stone-Bomb ability to blast open a wall that mimics its colTemplate:Our.

Stage 3

  • The first shard can be found underneath the walkway in the first area. Kirby will need to use a Needle-based ability to open the way.
  • The second shard appears in the middle of a large array of Star Blocks. To make this happen, Kirby has to shape the array into the correct shape, by removing blocks where appropriate. The clue as to the proper shape will be given by Adeleine in the previous area.
  • The third shard can be found on the path in the next area. Kirby will have to dive down one of the cliffs to reach it.

Stage 4

  • The first shard can be found during King Dedede's section. It is hidden inside one of the breakable pillars.
  • The second shard can be found underneath a pile of volcanic rubble in a small room with the Chacha. It can be broken using the Ice ability.
  • The third shard can be found in the last area, with the rising magma. It is on the left side of the chamber, guarded by a Sandman.

Boss: Magman

  • To earn this shard, Kirby must battle and defeat the Magman. It is required to beat the level.

Shiver Star

Stage 1

  • The first shard can be obtained during the sled ride. Waddle Dee will have to jump over the second igloo to get it.
  • The second shard can be found in the igloo where the Mid-Boss Chilly is fought. Kirby will have to use a Burning-based ability to crack the ceiling ice where it appears.
  • The third shard can be found underwater, beneath the frozen surface. Kirby will have to swim through an opening in the rocky pillar to get to it.

Stage 2

  • The first shard can be found underneath one of the cloud platforms on the first walkway.
  • The second shard can be collected in the area with many Zebon. Kirby has to fire to the upper-left through a line if Scarfies to get it.
  • In the chamber with the Mid-Boss Mopoo, a rectangular barrier lies in the middle made of orange and yellow material. Kirby has to use the Needle-Spark ability to break it open.

Stage 3

  • The first shard can be found in the escalator area, on a walkway to the upper-left.
  • The second shard appears after defeating the Mid-Boss Pupa.
  • The third crystal appears when Kirby presses the right sequence of switches in a room full of them. Adeleine will give a hint to which ones need pressing in the room prior.

Stage 4

  • The first shard can be obtained in the first factory area. Kirby needs to use the Stone-Needle ability to break a series of boxes, allowing him to climb up a ladder to get it.
  • The second shard can be found in a cage in the room where the Mid-Boss Burnis is fought. To break this cage, Kirby has to use the Spark-Cutter ability.
  • The third shard can be found down at the end of one of the halls with the bulldozers. Kirby will have to be quick to get it and not get crushed.

Boss: HR-H/HR-E

  • To earn this shard, Kirby must battle and defeat HR-H, then his second form, HR-E. It is required to beat the level.

Ripple Star

Stage 1

  • The first shard is out in the open in the first area, just like in Stage 1 of Pop Star.

Stage 3

  • The first shard appears after clearing out the first enemy ambush.
  • The second shard can be found under an orange and red floor in the third enemy ambush room. Kirby can break this floor open using Burn-Needle.
  • The third shard appears after the last enemy ambush is disposed of.
